Correct interpretation of the data from such trials depends largely on adequate design and on performing the appropriate statistical analyses. In this book, the statistical aspects of both the design and analysis of trials are described, with particular emphasis on recently developed methods of analysis.
According to Sir David Cox, the randomized controlled clinical trial is perhaps the outstanding contribution of statistics to 20th century medical research. Nowadays about 8000 such trials are undertaken annually in all areas of medicine from the treatment of acne to the prevention of cancer. Although the vast majority of these trials take place away from the glare of public interest, some deal with issues that are controversial enough to make even the popular press; an obvious example is the use of AZT for the treatment of AIDS.
There are many excellent books available which give comprehensive accounts of how clinical trials should be carried out and organized. The aim of this book is different; the authors attempt to give relatively concise descriptions of the more statistical aspects of the design and analysis of clinical trials, particularly those methods developed over the last decade or so. Topics discussed in this text include randomization, interim analyses, sample size determination, the analysis of longitudinal data, Bayesian methods, survival analysis and meta-analysis. Many examples are included alongside some of the necessary technical material, the more difficult parts of which are confined to tables. An Appendix gives details of relevant software. The book should be useful to medical statisticians and others faced with the often difficult problems of designing and analyzing clinical trials.
The controlled clinical trial has become one of the most important tools in medical research and investigators planning to undertake such a trial have no shortage of excellent books to which to turn for advice and information. But unlike the many other books dealing with clinical trials, this text is primarily concerned with the statistical issues of certain aspects of their design (Chapters 2 and 3) and, in particular, their analysis (Chapters 4 to 10), rather than their day-to-day organization. This restriction will enable us to give fuller accounts of some recently developed methods that may be particularly useful for the type of data often generated from clinical trials. Some details of the software available that implements the methods described will be given in the Appendix.

Uneven material.......2006-11-28

This book provides a fair introduction to geology with fairly clear diagrams and introduction to basics such as geological time scale and plate tectonics. The book tries to emphasize the practical side of geology: what can be seen and picked up. The introduction to common minerals was perhaps not as practical as I'd hoped, for some of the minerals without picture and just a description of chemical structure, hardness, and gravity I could not identify them. The information level was uneven: "a backpack full of rocks can be heavy" to arcane (The chemical reaction with feldspar to produce clay minerals). The section on different rock types was well done, but the section of mapping didn't seem practical (I couldn't really map a bed of coal). I think this book might be best if used with a very local or state geology guide.

Dougal Dixon has written a wonderful book with detailed
discriptions suited for both the beginner and those already into Geology.This book is a perfect learning tool for all ages.
Perfect for education as well as recreational activilties.

Excellent Book for the Beginning Geologist.......2004-08-07

This is a wonderful book for the beginning geologist or anyone interested in earth sciences. It presents the fundamental concepts of geology in a way that is accessible to the non-specialist, but without being oversimplified or condescending. It's full of lots of great pictures, and the best part of the book is the section where it tells you how to collect and label specimens of rock yourself. People of any age interested in science, especially go out and get grubby do it yourself science, will find this book an excellent addition to their libraries.

Nice book for the beginner.......2000-07-05

I have the habit of buying anything with geology, paleontology, history, etc. in the title, sometimes without thought to where I'm at with my knowledge base. This was one of those times! The book is a lovely, well illustrated, practical guide to geology for the beginner. Much of what the authors dedicate a single paragraph or page to I have had whole courses in already, so needless to say, I was not quite as enthused over the material as a new comer to the field might be. Certainly for the beginner, especially the Junior High natural science enthusiast, this would be a wonderful gift. It might even make a good text for a high school natual science course, as it covers considerable information on the earth sciences. I plan on giving my copy to a close friend with children interested in these subjects.

Great book. Good for beginners........1999-05-16

Today we were at 12000 feet looking into the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, and we decided we needed a book. Any book. A good book. A book that keeps you reading. The Practical Geologist was just the book! We read all night, and the night's not over yet! We learned about geology, and also came a little closer to God. I highly recommend it! p.s. Brutally uncomfortable and awkwardly familiar.......2006-06-06

I will admit that this book is probably not for everyone. It is, however, a riotous, goosebump-inducing flashback for anyone who, as a 13-year-old girl, thought she would one day be a big-shot novelist.

Thirteen was different back then. Despite some edgy content, the whole point of the book isn't supposed to be a hard-nosed, poignant social commentary. The entire intent of the book is to laugh at the ludicrously misinformed protagonist and to commiserate with the big shoes in which the writer was trying to walk.

I think this is just one of those things one either will 'get' or won't. For those of us who get it, it's a great book to nestle on our bookshelves with a D.A.R.E. bookmark tucked inside.

I wish I were this brave. I could never open my 13 year old self up to the type of ridicule that would come from people having read the angst of my 13 year old soul.

I see so many bad reviews, and it makes me wonder if the reviewers understood the premise. This isn't a book about a 13 year old girl. This is a book that was written by a 13 year old girl. WIth all of her ignorance and awkwardness laid bare to the world.

Having read pieces of this on her website before she decided to self publish this book, I kind of knew what was coming, but I had no idea it would be so wonderfully, hilariously bad.
It's like finding a picture of yourself from 1989 and wondering ho you could have possibly thought the Jennifer Grey (ala Dirty Dancing) shorts and perm were cool looking.

If I had to sum it up in 2 words- lovingly cringeworthy.

The concept of this book is not necessarily bad because looking back on your adolescent attempts at writing can be amusing, in a cringe-inducing way, but I don't understand what Ariano was trying to achieve by making this available to the public. It isn't funny to anyone who doesn't actually know the author and it just seems like a pointless exercise in self-aggrandisement.

Vanity publishing has that name for a reason.

Ugh, this was awful - so not funny. It was such a waste of time. burbuly boo, burbuly boo, zim zam wammy jam woo woo woo burbuly boo, burbuly boo, splippity splappity sploo sploo sploo. I just found this book to be mess. I think we've all written something terrible when we were teens, but this is the sort of thing you should keep hidden in a closet somewhere. zing zang beeble bibble bop! It didn't take long for the joke to wear thin. sneeble, snarble, snooble, snoo. Bleeble, blarble, blooble, bloo.

It Definitely Does Not Follow.......2005-01-26

Ariano is just so full of herself. My first whiff of this book was strangely reminiscent of Drew Barrymore's equally whiny "Little Girl Lost." The difference is that, despite still having wild child tendencies (even now at age 30), Barrymore actually demonstrated that she could learn and evolve. Ariano (aka Wing Chun) has failed on all fronts.

Having been a teenager of the 1980s, I find it impossible to sympathize. I encountered a level of brutality and ostracism that would blow her mind. (Even Revenge of the Nerds was a better example of 1980s misfit youth life.) I also find it hard to be anything other than bored or annoyed at her mindset.

"A Bad Teen Novel" is a mild way to put it. If you have a copy, burn it or shred it or get your money back. A minus five-star rating is the mildest way to go.
