Throughout, Horne shows how to use QuickBooks both in the context of conventional product-oriented businesses and in today's increasingly dominant services businesses. Along the way, she introduces basic accounting concepts and explains how they are used (or adjusted) by QuickBooks. For everyone who wants to learn QuickBooks 2004, including millions of small and home office business owners, accountants, bookkeepers, and students. Will also be valuable to QuickBooks users upgrading to the newest release. With over 2.5 million users, QuickBooks is the world's #1 small business accounting package.

Book Description
Introduction to QuickBooks Pro, 2004 is for instructors who teach QuickBooks at most community colleges, proprietary schools and in continuing education programs. Customer Reviews:
Excellent textbook.......2005-04-07
I use this text for a self-paced class for accounting students at a technical college where I teach. It is an excellent text that is easy to follow for someone with accounting training. It is not for non-accountants! (There are other excellent texts for the many people who want to learn QuickBooks but have no accounting training.) After one semester of college accounting, however, students can understand this book without difficulty. My students do very well with it and enjoy the practical tone and advice that the book gives. I have run more than 100 students through this course with this edition and the editions before this one without any complaints at all. If you understand accounting and computers at all, this is a great text.
Falls Short.......2005-02-04
I am using this book and CD in a self paced class. The text and examples are very difficult to follow if you are a person who needs detailed visual examples as well as easy to follow explanations. I am usually a quick study at these types of courses but found this one a dud. Even my instructor at the computer learning center which is currently using this book in it's self paced program admits it was very hard for her to follow. She has years of experience and creates web pages for businesses as well as accounting in addition to her teaching job. I would recommend seeking out an professional opinion before taking on this pricey textbook.

Book Description
Linda Morrison brings the voices and issues of a little-known, complex social movement to the attention of sociologists, mental health professionals, and the general public. The members of this social movement work to gain voice for their own experience, to raise consciousness of injustice and inequality, to expose the darker side of psychiatry, and to promote alternatives for people in emotional distress. Talking Back to Psychiatry explores the movement's history, its complex membership, its strategies and goals, and the varied response it has received from psychiatry, policy makers, and the public at large.

Book Description
It has been said that how a society treats its least well-off members speaks volumes about its humanity. If so, our treatment of the mentally ill suggests that American society is inhumane: swinging between overintervention and utter neglect, we sometimes force extreme treatments on those who do not want them, and at other times discharge mentally ill patients who do want treatment without providing adequate resources for their care in the community.
Focusing on overinterventionist approaches, Refusing Care explores when, if ever, the mentally ill should be treated against their will. Basing her analysis on case and empirical studies, Elyn R. Saks explores dilemmas raised by forced treatment in three contexts—civil commitment (forced hospitalization for noncriminals), medication, and seclusion and restraints. Saks argues that the best way to solve each of these dilemmas is, paradoxically, to be both more protective of individual autonomy and more paternalistic than current law calls for. For instance, while Saks advocates relaxing the standards for first commitment after a psychotic episode, she also would prohibit extreme mechanical restraints (such as tying someone spread-eagled to a bed). Finally, because of the often extreme prejudice against the mentally ill in American society, Saks proposes standards that, as much as possible, should apply equally to non-mentally ill and mentally ill people alike.
Mental health professionals, lawyers, disability rights activists, and anyone who wants to learn more about the way the mentally ill are treated—and ought to be treated—in the United States should read Refusing Care.

Under the doctrine of informed consent, if a person is competent to understand the risks, benefits, and alternatives to proposed treatment, that person is allowed to decide whether to accept or reject the proposed treatment. Informed consent is not required if the person is incompetent or if an emergency arises that necessitates treatment to save the person s life. Nevertheless, various devices are used to deny mentally disordered persons their right to refuse treatment even when they are competent decision makers and even when no emergency exists. For example, some courts substitute a limited due process model for a full due process model, allowing doctors to decide whether the proposed treatment is appropriate, rather than requiring a court s determination of the patient s competence to withhold consent. Some states substitute the decision to involuntarily commit the patient, or a decision to appoint a guardian or conservator to assist the patient, for the requirement that the patient be incompetent to make treatment decisions. In some states, the limited emergency exception to the requirement of informed consent has been expanded to allow involuntary treatment of dangerous patients without requiring that an emergency exists. In some states, the requirement of voluntary and informed consent has been replaced by uninformed or coerced assent. For example, if the patient does not object to the treatment, some courts have allowed doctors to medicate the patient without informing the patient of the risks, benefits, and alternatives to that medication and obtaining the patient s informed consent to its administration. Outpatient commitment laws have been enacted such as Kendra s Law in New York through which courts order mentally disordered persons to accept medication, even though such persons are not subject to involuntary civil commitment. These various devices so erode the competent patient s right to autonomous medical decision making that the right of

Insightful.......2001-03-25
Although Bruce J. Winick does not include a preface in THE RIGHT TO REFUSE MENTAL HEALTH TREATMENT, it is obvious that the appropriate audience for this book includes judges, lawyers (both defense and plaintiff), psychiatrists, psychologists, clinical social workers, and counselors. THE RIGHT TO REFUSE MENTAL HEALTH TREATMENT can be best described as a comprehensive assessment of the decision making process regarding involuntary clients, patients and, of course, prisoners. With 20 chapters divided into three sections, it offers a significant contribution both to law and to clinical mental health intervention. The sections include:
* Mental Health Treatment Techniques (seven chapters) * Constitutional Limitations on Involuntary Mental Health and Correctional Treatment (eight chapters) * Evaluating and Implementing the Right to Refuse Treatment (four chapters)
Winick is an excellent writer! Regardless of one's discipline (law or mental health), one will find this book a worthwhile asset in one's library.
When Winick initially introduces a complex legal concept in one chapter and the same concept must be introduced later, he employs one of two effective strategies. He either writes a summary of his earlier work or he cites where the reader can find more details of the legal concept. This strategy is critically important and useful for this type of book. For example, many people will not read this monograph from cover to cover, but rather read sections that are needed to achieve a necessary goal for a client. Winick's artful style is particularly beneficial for this type of reader. In addition, the index is excellent! It includes both a "table of authority" (cases) and a subject index. These indexes will be extremely useful for readers seeking to resolve a problem related to involuntary treatment.
Mental health practitioners will be most impressed with the four chapters in Part III. Here Winick systematically evaluates the right to refuse treatment, and he does an exceptional job of synthesizing the ramification of court ordered or coerced intervention. Simply stated, involuntary treatment does not work well. Winick's lack of using mental health jargon is refreshing and most importantly provides a rare insight. This was my favorite section of the book. It is directly applicable to the daily work of the clinician. In the end, the reader realizes that mental health research does not process a prototype of a successfully treated involuntary client. Based on Winick's review and synthesis of literature, such a prototype may not be possible and mental health may need to refocus the direction of involuntary treatment research. A sound conclusion from Winick's book is that we must begin to study the process by which a client/patient moves from being involuntary to voluntary. In other words, what can a mental health professional do to instill a desire to successfully complete treatment among court ordered clients? This question sounds reminiscent of Yochelson and Samenow's classic work on the criminal personality. Perhaps we need to revisit and extend Yochelson and Samenow's research.

Procedures within each exercise are numerous and discrete so that an exercise can be tailored to the needs of the students, the style of the instructor, and the facilities available.
Customer Reviews:
This book is like, the best!.......2002-05-12
I would like everyone to know that this book is super great. I was like so confused at first, but now everything is crystal clear. I learned that fertilization in a plant occurs in it's uterus and after gastrulation occurs the spores shoot out of the carpel and undergo a meiotic phase called the acrosomal stage. So like, if you're stumped about which bio book to get, you should totally get this one!
A superb laboratory manual........2000-07-09
The Biology Laboratory Manual by Guttman, Vodopich, Johnson, Raven, and Moore provides an easy to follow approach to introductory biology. It features many activities that can be completed on average between 2 and 3 hours. There are many photos and diagrams that are in full color, many pre-laboratory type questions, and a good amount of questions that are best answered during lab or after lab. This book is ideal for an advanced high school biology course or a freshman or sophomore college biology class. Unlike a fair amount of the laboratory texts out there, this one accompanies most biology books very well. Thus, the laboratory portion of class tends to blend very well with the lecture portion.

Book Description
A half century after its invention, and after several waves of optimism and pessimism, holography is now poised to achieve widespread application. Holograms are now being used as tools in many industries, from heads-up displays in aircraft to directing interconnections in massively parallel computing. Acoustic holograms can provide three-dimensional images of internal organs without surgery or dangerous radiation, and holography forms the basis of several other forms of nondestructive testing. This book provides both a review of the development of the field and of the applications likely to be important in the 21st century. It begins with a review by Emmett Leith, one of the inventors of holography - or re-inventors, after Denis Gabor's original work in 1947. Two chapters discuss the frontiers of holographic imaging, including color holograms and stereographic movies. Several subsequent chapters describe novel methods of forming and viewing holographic images, including the use of low-coherence sources or even computers to generate the holograms. The book concludes with a sampling of new applications of holography, including its uses in improving the efficiency of solar cells, in nondestructive testing, in improving the coherence properties of light, in data storage, and in investigations of fundamental physics.
Book Description
Blog: an online diary.
My Blog: How I got over the worst, most humiliating breakup in web-recorded history–and became stronger, smarter, and better off without the biggest Loser on the face of the earth.
Life is sweet for Rachel. She’s living with her boyfriend of two years in Seattle and is starting a new high-paying job at the same snazzy computer company where he works. Then Rachel’s system crashes. Her supposedly adoring almost-fiancé cheats on her, lies to her, dumps her, and hooks up with someone else–specifically, her own boss’s boss’s boss. Talk about tacky.
Heartbroken, beyond depressed, and stuck in nine-to-five hell, Rachel follows a recovery regimen that features an arsenal of meds (including General Celexa: "the holy pink pill"), deliciously detailed daily entries in her newly inaugurated weblog Breakup Babe, and a string of dates–from the irresistibly bad Little Rockclimbing Spy, who proves to be full of surprises, to the high-flying ladies man Sexy Boy, who loves weed almost as much as he loves women.
With her shoulder-perched alter egos Sensible Girl and Needy Girl vying for her sanity, and a growing legion of supportive online fans threatening to snap her out of her grand funk, Rachel somehow survives, thrives, and discovers just how risky and liberating love, loss, and blogging can be.

Like living life vicariously through a good friend..........2006-11-02
My friend, Suzie, actually sent me this book under the guise that it was her mom's best friend's daughter who had written it. However, after reading the book (in one lazy afternoon - perfect!), I realized that she had actually sent it to me because I am constantly on my 30yr old single friend (still Suzie) to dish the details of her life just so that I could live vicariously through her. In the end, I knew that Suz sent me this book so that I could pacify all of my blissfully married delusions and demands to know what it's like out there in the dating world of grownups. I was thrilled to hear that it was everything I had imagined and it led me spend the rest of the evening conjecturing how I would be faring if I were still out there. Long story short, the read was smooth and satisfying, and remained juicy without bogging the reader down with inane details. It was light and airy and akin to any the embarrassingly addictive soap operas, MTV specials or quirky romance movies that we all secretly love to watch but hate to admit to. And, it was particularly enjoyable for a west coaster like me who has been to many of the places mentioned.
This book is as fun as reading someone's diary... but better because it is actually well-written. Best of all, it will take you back to all the enjoyable memories you might have of dating all the wrong guys for all the right reasons...
Breakup Babe as time travel therapy.......2006-09-05
As an on again/off again fan of Ms. Agiewich's blog, I couldn't help picking up her book after hearing of her many promotional appearances all around the Northwest where she's been winning fans during Q&A with her real life wit and charm. With so much positive feedback circulating through local bookstores about the warmth and humility in her live appearances, my curiosity in the life of Breakup Babe was piqued once again!
What's so great about Rebecca Aigewich's writing is her unrelenting honesty and the depth of its delivery throughout the story. By now most of us know her book stems from her once anonymous blog diary where she exposed her heartache and obsession with the drama of a teenager and the wit, and self reflection, of a woman solidly in her thirties. Her novel holds true to this courageous theme and makes for a very smart, very grown-up revisit back to my own obsessive teen years and my mid-twenties.
While those are not my favorite years to relive, especially now that I've grown myself up and am living a gentle, non-heartache riddled life, I loved the time travel with Breakup Babe by my side. Giggling constantly over Aigewichs smack-on prose, I was able to poke fun at a few of my own still tender love life bruises and reflect on how the "Sexy Boy" in my own story eventually led me to "The One".
It's true that this super funny and refreshingly arranged novel may not be for everyone. But word has it that Rebecca Aigewich is a writer's writer. So sooner or later you'll find one of her books in your lap, compelled to time travel your own life through her vision.
Breakup Babe.......2006-08-31
I just finished "Breakup Babe" today. Overall, the book is not bad. Rachel starts a blog to find release from the Loser that cheated on her when she was on vacation. I think the beginning of the novel is the best part of the book. The experiences that Rachel deals with in the first part of the novel seem to hook me in compared to the latter part of the novel. The best part for me was reading the comments that others left after Rachel submitted a blog entry. And I did relate to some of what Rachel went through. What made me give this book 4 stars and not 5 is that although Rachel is a great character, after a while her complaining about things got to be a bit much. Like her comments about how she would put links to other people's blogs but then complain how those people couldn't write or wrote boring blogs. The whiny part about Rachel got to be a little harder to take towards the end of the novel. But other than that aspect, I did enjoy reading "Breakup Babe" and it was a fast read for me. So if you're looking for a good read for that last trip to the beach or if you're starting to compile your reading pile for your Fall and Winter reading, consider looking into get this one.
Pretty darn good.......2006-08-08
You know, there's something fundementally unappealing about the main character, Rachel. Cheated on, lied to, and dumped by her boyfriend of two years, Rachel spends an unholy amount of time obsessing over the breakup and crying in her office. For months, crying in her office. A thirty-four year old woman after a not-very-long relationship crying in her office for months. Does this strike anyone else as, well, mental? Most people need a week of sappy movies and some cookie dough-- not pharmacuticals to just get them through the day without a nervous breakdown. She sleeps with guys left and right. She gets emotionally attached if a guy looks at her with anything other than disgust. She thinks about a boy she was with for two months over a decade ago. She's pathetic! She's co-dependent! She has no ability to stand on her own two feet!
And yet she's loveable. And funny. Rachel is everything I hate about women-- but she does it with style.
I loved the incorporated blog into the text of the novel. I loved the comments from her loyal readers. I loved Lil' Rockcliming Spy and hated the Doctor. And even though her replacement names for all her characters was really annoying at first, I got used to it. Once I got started with this book, I got sucked in. The ending was very satisfactory and I closed the cover very entertained.
And that's what it's really about.
What makes me stay up until 2 a.m.?.......2006-08-02
Wanting to know what happened to BreakupBabe! When I grabbed this book at my local big-box bookseller (sorry Amazon), I figured it would be just another light piece of chick lit for my summer reading stack. But as a fellow 30-something in the greater Seattle area who worships a white pill (I think antidepressants are the only thing that keeps me going through our crappy winters here), I LOVED THIS BOOK! It reminded me of conversations I've had with my single gal pals regarding men and dating, particularly the should-I-or-shouldn't-I discussions. (Of course, this book also reminded me why my husband is *such* an amazing guy.)
If you ever wanted to embarrass your ex is front of others, if you ever slept with the wrong guy just 'cause it felt right at the time, if you ever spent all day crying on the couch feeling sorry for yourself . . . R. shares your pain. But she does things I never had the guts to do, and I loved going through it all with her. Way to go sister!!
