Short-Term Trading, Long-Term Profits explains how to learn the ropesand lay the necessary foundationto become a successful short-term trader. Sidestepping the costly trial-and-error learning process that has forced many traders to leave the arena prematurely, before they truly understood the rules, this timely book provides specific, practical guidelines and strategies for integrating short-term trading into an overall portfolio and financial plan.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars No insight and nothing useful.......2006-07-28

I believe this is the least insightful book on trading I've ever read. Not only does it offer nothing of real value, it offers very little that's even original. The vast bulk of this book is essentially a summary of what others have taught (lots of Bill O'Neill stuff, etc), and even THAT carries no insight. This book is, in fact, a very, very superficial look at trading, and really only contains information you would find in just about any basic trading book. Such topics as P/E, fundamental analysis, technical analysis, and money management are touched upon, but only enough to give a shallow definition of each, at which point the book moves on.

Whenever I see a book I look for something practical that I can apply. I was unable to find anything here. This book seems thrown together by someone who knows very little about the subject. Even when something is supposedly going to be explained, such as NASDAQ level II quoting, the book simply posts a few charts and neglects to explain anything about what they mean.

Be aware, if you're still interested in this book, that every example (without exception) was taken from the tech bubble period in 2000. The information, what little of it there is, is outdated and essentially useless. The few techniques in the book are rigid and make very little sense in today's market. An example: Leitzman says you shouldn't trade stocks over $100 because they're too volatile. In 2000, when the tech high-fliers were over $100, that was true. Now, it's not.

Simply put, this book seems to be a reckless attempt to cash in on the popularity (a few years ago) of trading books. It oversimplifies trading and attempts to define it by rigid rules which don't hold. It's worth avoiding.

                              Product Description

Molecular chaperones are involved in a wide variety of essential cellular processes in living cells. A subset of molecular chaperones have been initially described as heat shock proteins protecting cells from stress damage by keeping cellular proteins in a folding competent state and preventing them from irreversible aggregation. Later it became obvious that molecular chaperones are also expressed constitutively in the cell and are involved in complex processes such as protein synthesis, intracellular protein transport, post-translational modification and secretion of proteins as well as receptor signalling. Hence, it is not surprising that molecular chaperones are implicated in the pathogenesis of many relevant diseases and could be regarded as potential pharmacological targets. Starting with the analysis of the mode of action of chaperones at the molecular, cellular and organismic level, this book will then describe specific aspects where modulation of chaperone action could be of pharmacological and therapeutic interest.

While the presentations by the museum's curators were excellent, the pace was too fast to absorb the material. The book was an excellent supplement that I used to study details over a longer period. This reinforced the information furnished by the curators. The book is very well written and is useful for a person with little knowledge of geology. It furnishes clear and detailed explanations and I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent step-by-step introduction for new students.......1999-01-08

A good, comprehensive, step-by-step guide to the fundamental subject areas of geology. This book deals primarily with the theories behind geology and uses a wide variety of interesting examples to assist understanding. Some helpful diagrams are included although the photographs could be improved. Avoids detailed and more advanced chemical explanations.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best geology books I've read.......2005-01-14

This is a very cool book on volcanoes. It's well written, informative, and very interesting. I agree with the other comment here that it's easily accessible by the layman and explains everything in language you can understand. The explanations are clear and concise.

The book is notable for several other reasons. Besides the usual chapters on basic vulcanology and geology, where the types of volcanoes, structure of volcanoes, and so on is discussed, much of the book is devoted to the dangers and hazards of volcanoes and how to deal with them. These chapters cover the history of the most famous eruptions, the destruction wreaked, and the more serious climatological changes, which I read with a sort of morbid fascination.

In one of these chapters, on volcanoes and climate, the author discusses the theory that "super volcano" eruptions are thought to be responsible for major extinctions around the globe just as in the case of the Alvarez meteor extinction of the dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous. I was already familiar with some of these events from previous reading, such as Krakatoa, Pompeii and Herculaneum, but more is known now, but eruptions such as Toba and Tambora were were much larger even than these. The Tambora eruption of 1815 spewed 50 cubic kilometers of ash into the air and killed 60,000 people on Indonesia, even more than were killed 60 years later by the the tsunami in 1883 from Krakatoa. That year came to be known as the "year without a summer" and caused a very cold winter that year and crop failures around the world which killed tens of thousands of more people.

The dangers of pyroclastic flows and of lahars get special attention and are discussed in detail. "Lahar" is an Indonesion word for fast moving flows of ash mixed with water that act like concrete, trapping people and animals and burying towns. The author provides a table of the biggest eruptions showing info such as measured or estimated size (with the so-called "VEI number") and total loss of life.

The third chapter discusses the destructive effects of volcanoes on climate which I mentioned earlier. One of these was especially noteworthy. About 70,000-80,000 years ago the Toba eruption occurred, the greatest one known since humans evolved. The author says 2000 million tons of carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide were spewed into the atmosphere. The most conservative estimate of the dimming of sunlight caused by the volcanic aerosols of Toba may have been sufficient to dim sunlight to 1/10th of its normal value. This would have been enough to arrest or kill much of the trees and vegetation over much of the earth's surface. You may be familiar with the "Eve hypothesis" in human evolution, which is the idea that all modern humans can trace their ancestry back to a single individual as a result of mitochondrial DNA analysis. It's now thought that the Toba eruption could have been the cause of that, when most of the world's population was wiped out by the Toba eruption and only a few survived, one of which was Eve.

These sorts of eruptions have been termed "super volcanoes," and there are dozens of these enormous calderas around the world that are big enough to create them, including three in the U.S. For example, the 60 km caldera which created a VEI 8 eruption 640,000 years ago in Yellowstone may be approaching such an eruption again. Seismic studies show that the there is an active magma chamber below the middle of the caldera that is 20 km wide and 10 km deep. It seems magma is continuing to be injected into this chamber, because the center of the caldera has domed upwards by 1 meter in the last 50 years. The other calderas are the Long Valley caldera near Mammoth mountain in California and the Valles caldera in New Mexico.

Another unusual hazard of volcanoes is known by the Icelandic word Jokuhlaups (with an umlaut over the first u), or "glacier burst." These occur when melting glaciers cause floods from the runoff. On Mt. Rainier, which I visited once, I learned that these have occurred in an odd way occasionally. They have even issued forth from ice caves on the mountain, knocking down hikers and a couple of outhouses. :-)

Another hazard of volcanoes that includes mass extinctions are those from continental flood basalts, which can cover millions of square miles of the earth's surface. One of these occurred on the Columbia River Plateau in the Pacific Northwest 16 million years ago. Another occurred in Siberia 248 million years ago and covered 2 million square miles. The Alvarez meteor strike is mentioned as possibly setting off another flood basalt, the Deccan Traps event in India at the end of the Cretaceous 63 million years ago. The author mentions the explosions of Krakatoa in 1883, which pulverized 4.3 cubic miles of rock from the crater and caused a tsunami that killed 36,000 people on sumatra, and was the size of 10,000 Hiroshima type bombs, and the one that created Crater Lake in Oregon about 7000 years ago, which was even bigger, blowing 7.1 cubic miles of rock from the crater. It's now thought that a large meteor strike in southwestern Idaho could have caused these flood basalts over eastern Washington and Oregon by puncturing the crust all the way through to the mantle, allowing magma to reach the surface.

The last chapters in the book are devoted to Monitoring Volcanoes, Visiting Volcanoes, and Extraterestrial Volcanoes. There are also discussions of how to survive a hot blast from a volcano by wrapping yourself or at least any exposed skin in a wet protective covering, holding your breath as long as you can or until the heat from the blast has passed.

Finally, there are two appendices, one on volcanic rock types, and another on minerals in ignoeous rocks and their chemical composition, and a glossary of volcanic terms. Overall, a very interesting and fascinating book on geology and vulcanology.

5 out of 5 stars The best volcano book for the layman, bar none.......2003-01-10

A good many folks have a passing interest in volcanoes, especially when a mountain like Kilauea or St. Helens erupts. Yet, most books on the subject are either very dry and technical, or, equally bad, overly concern themselves with the human details of a particular event, leaving the science of the thing as an abandoned stepchild. This excellent book suffers neither fault.

Simply put, if you want to learn the whys and wherefores of this most spectacular natural process, this is your book. The reading style is effortless, and not beyond the comprehension of anyone with a high school background in the sciences. The illustrations and diagrams are carefully chosen to clarify or expand upon points in the text. While reciting the individual and societal effects of volcanic activity, the book does not get bogged down in a welter of minutiae, and holds the reader's interest to the end.

The author has made every attempt to bring the text up to the state of the art in terms of scientific advances, and the reader benefits. Such concepts as plate tectonics, hot spots, and the like are well explained. Finally, for readers who live in the Western U.S., or anticipate travelling there, the book explains and illustrates a number of landforms that might elude one's attention, but for reading this fine work.

Upon concluding the book, the reader will have an understanding of volcanism, its landforms, and its effects on people superior to anyone, save a full-time geologist. I enthusiastically recommend it to all readers.

                                          Book Description

The first book to deal with the design and optimization of transistors made from strained layers, Applications of Silicon-Germanium Heterostructure Devices combines three distinct topics-technology, device design and simulation, and applications-in a comprehensive way. Important aspects of the book include key technology issues for the growth of strained layers, background theory of the HBT, how device simulation can be used to predict the optimum HBT device structure for a particular application such as cryogenics, compact SiGe-HBT models for RF applications and the SPICE parameter extraction, and strategies for the enhancement of the high-frequency performance of heterojunction field effect transistors (HFETs) using MOSFET or MODFET structures. The book also covers the design and application of optoelectronic devices and assesses how SiGe technology competes with other alternative technologies in the RF wireless communications marketplace.

I can appreciate how "My Lush Life" by Douglas McEwan may frequently, if not almost always, be under-appreciated, undervalued, even trivialized and minimized.
The book, however, is brilliant. McEwan reminds me of Barry Humphries...but a Barry Humphries who has not yet caught on to his audience. McEwan's points are perhaps if anything more subtle than those presented by Dame Edna. Both like and unlike Dame Edna, McEwan exposes hypocrisy and prejudice with a wit and humor and intelligence that does not stop. To view his work as tailored for the gay population, which I suspect it almost always is, misses the point of this extraordinary writer entirely. He is addressing issues that deeply touch us all - alcoholism, depression, denial, superficiality, bias, abuse - and he does this in as creative a way as I have seen. I am most impressed with this first novel and sincerely hope that McEwan succeeds in finding a wide audience to benefit from what he has to contribute. I'm eagerly awaiting his next novel.

2 out of 5 stars Not even a Little Me.......2004-01-28

After finishing the 325 odd pages of Douglas McEwan's groaner of a book, he asserts that this was "the best writing of my life"

                                          Live longer, babe.

There's a lot of mention in reviews of this book (and in the afterword) of it's similarities to Patrick Denis' "Little Me". This ham-handed, ulimately tedious mock-bio of self-centered boozy nympho Tallulah Morehead bears a resemblance to Dennis' hilarious mock-bio of self-centered boozy nympho Belle Poitrine only in the heroines self centeredness, booziness, and...well, do the math. While McEwan relies on cheesy, borscht-belt jokes that are repeated, and repeated, and repeated, Dennis relied upon the conceit that his mock bio was a dead on parody of the autobiographies of practically every star from the golden era. Not to say that I didn't get a few chuckles out of "My Lush Life", but they were few and far between. I mostly rolled my eyes and groaned. Since you can get "Little Me" in a reprint now, if you are in the market for a mock-bio about an immoral, talentless booze-bag who stumbles into stardom, well, "Little Me" is the Filet, and "My Lush Life" is the Happy Meal.

2 out of 5 stars Disapointing at best........2003-11-04

What starts out as fresh and witty soon becomes tedious. There is no doubt that McEwan posses a wicked sense of humor. However instead of capitalizing on it the reader is "treated" to the same joke over and over and over.

Is it funny? Yes. Is it worth reading? Probably not. Which is unfortunate cause the book has a tremendous amount of promise.

4 out of 5 stars Praise For MY LUSH LIFE (From "Coaster-To-Coaster").......2003-05-02

In his novel novel, MY LUSH LIFE, author Douglas MacEwan delivers his wit straight-up with a humor chaser. After his tie-loosening preface created to fend off dreary, would-be litigators, Mr. MacEwan promptly whisks us away to the improbable, but hysterical world of Tallulah Morehead (all 47,000 puns in the book are mercilessly intended),whose career, legend and antics spans the 20th century astride two swizzle sticks in this laugh-out-loud bio-"agog"-graphy.

In this book, though, everybody works. No innocent by-reading allowed. Bring to the table your own knowledge of movies, gossip and history before parting these pages. You'll need it. The pace is fast, the jokes are frequent and, after reading the first few footnotes, your brow will furrow with disappointment when you see a page which DOESN'T have one.

MY LUSH LIFE is a vacation on paper....a cocktail napkin, to be specific. Once I started, there was no turning back and certain pages, due to their density of enjoyment from line-to-line, I read 2-3 times. All I can say is that if you don't "get it", don't get it but, to the other 4 billion or so of us who do, do.

1 out of 5 stars Brings New Meaning to Tedium!.......2003-04-22

NO STARS! The only reason the rating shows one star is because I was not given the option for none.

After finishing "My Lush Life," I now understand the fervor that sometimes induces people to burn books -- or ban them. Mr. McEwan admittedly hopes his book will be derivative and reminiscent of the great camp classics of Patrick Dennis; but 'though the premise had promise, Mr. McEwan did not deliver.

I rue Mr. McEwan's lack of originality. But the worst offense is what seems at first to be mildly humerous quickly becomes flat and, ultimately, not funny -- and mean. It was a chore to finish the book.

The dust jacket graphics are wonderful. Buy the jacket and skip the book.
