Not for the Indoor Pet.......2001-07-22

I loved this book very much and rate it highly, but in my mind, the only drawback to this book is the fact that it mainly focussed on breeding, showing, and outdoor rabbits. Which is all perfectly fine if you plan on doing those things with your pet (or are intrested in that aspect of rabbits). But I (as the owner of a spoiled "urban rabbit") do not necessarily enjoy that part of the book very much. Sandy Crook presents her information in a wonderful and pleasing manner and has loads of CUTE bunny photographs. There is also useful information on just about every aspect of rabbits. A must for new owners!

Really wonderful book!.......2000-11-21

This has to be the BEST rabbit book out there! It's chock full or information sure to please and delight both the pet owner and the rabbit breeder (and those who are somewhere in between!).
Mrs Crook is known as "Mother of the Lops" - and she proves that she is rightly named so in this wonderful book about rabbits.
Although the title is "Lop Rabbits As Pets" the information in here is applicable to any breed of rabbit, and if you only ever buy one rabbit book - this is the one!

Lop Rabbits.......2000-10-21

We own a lop rabbit named Benjamin, and we bought this book. It has quite a bit of good information on rabbits as pets, but the strongest aspects of this book are the collection of photographs of all kinds of lop bunnies and the listing at the end of all the breeds of lop rabbits.

Great guide to keeping your little Snookums healthy & happy.......2000-08-01

I had a pet lop rabbit who, sadly, recently joined the ranks of the bunny hereafter. I found this book after her passing, and discovered that even though I took care of her to the best of my abilities, there was still a lot I had to learn.

Sandy Crook's guide book covers just about all aspects of raising lops, including proper maintenance and grooming. This was the data I needed to know the most. What feed to use & how much, what tools to use for grooming and trimming the claws, the proper temperature & dimensions of the hutch, and so much more. There's also a few comprehensive and insightful chapters on breeding and raising lops for show competition. I'll likely never venture into the art of lop breeding myself, but for those that are, the information in this book is invaluable.

There's also spades of photos of just about every breed, size, & color lop imaginable. And they're all so danged CUTE!

This book is not only a great help for any lop rabbit friend, but a very-well written book with wonderful pictures. A very warm and friendly book. I enjoy reading it over and over again!

A generic model of plantation growth was developed for Australia's National Carbon Accounting System to allow spatial estimation of carbon stocks over time. Unlike the primary goal of most forest growth models, which is to predict log volume at harvest age, the international guidelines for carbon accounting require estimation of current annual increments of total (above and belowground) biomass. In contrast to most commercial forestry systems that are concerned with rotations of many years, capturing the effects of annual climate variability is important, a feature that would otherwise be largely ameliorated over a forest rotation. While yield tables can provide the basis from which empirically based models can predict an 'averaged' performance over time, a process-based model can capture the effects of variability over short time periods. To utilise the valuable empirical data contained in yield tables, while also capturing the effects of process drivers, a hybrid model has been developed that integrates:*a spatially and temporally explicit site class index based on a process model, *a simple growth equation modified by the spatial and temporal site index, *known empirical constraints on growth (as an average) sourced from yield tables, *management effects. Management effects may either increase overall site productivity, and hence biomass accumulation, or accelerate the rate of approach toward site carrying capacity. The effects of management are important and need to be captured in the model. Some 5000 forest management regimes, representing different species, regions, site qualities and variants in management in Australia have been described for application within the model. A national program of identifying both forest areas and forest age classes, using a 30-year archive of Landsat satellite data has been undertaken to provide inputs to the model.

The SE-Veluwe is a forested area in The Netherlands consisting mainly of Pinus and heathlands and includes mono- and mixed species stands of Fagus sylvatica, Quercus robur, Q. petraea, Picea abies, Pseudotsuga menziesii, Betula pubescens and B. pendens. In this area, forest managers differ in management targets. Managers with a productivity-oriented target feel limited in meeting their target because neighbouring managers with biodiversity as main target do not or insufficiently control ungulate levels. The objective of this study was to assess to what extent ungulate herbivores affect natural regeneration and to gain insight in the spatial interactions between ungulate grazing, forest management and natural regeneration. This was assessed using the model FORSPACE, which is a process-based and spatial-explicit simulation model that integrates the impacts of ungulate grazing (cattle, horse, red deer, fallow deer, roe deer and wild boar) and forest management. We found that spatial interactions caused important local differences including: (i) spatial effects due to forest management; (ii) spatial interactions between ungulate species; (iii) spatial effects due to the distribution of seed sources of trees; and (iv) spatial interactions between plant species and grazing intensity. In general, we conclude that the effects of forest management on regeneration of trees are much more profound than that of ungulate grazing and browsing. Moreover, there are relatively small differences in the effects of the ungulates at very low to very high densities.

Chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.) coppice is a man-made forest type that has been managed for centuries in short rotations to rapidly produce woody biomass. These forests, which nowadays cover significant areas within Europe, experience a general neglect and are subsequently being abandoned. Most of them are now over-aged, very dense, and highly monotone. Little is known about their development. The increasing frequency of uprooting events of stools (i.e. a whole stump including the shoots that originated after coppicing), is raising concern among forest managers who fear a progressive expansion of the phenomenon. Our objective was (i) to describe the temporal and spatial patterns of the ongoing uprooting processes, (ii) to identify causes and (iii) to estimate future developments. We have analysed the stool uprooting dynamics in a 100ha abandoned chestnut coppice and have built an empirical, predictive model to estimate the uprooting probability based on topographic, stand and stool characteristics. Finally, detailed uprooting dynamics were reconstructed at the single gap level for three case studies to characterise the process of gap expansion. Tree-rings were used to date the relevant events. We found that uprooting is primarily caused by precarious tree statics rather than external forcing agents. The empirical model clearly predicts that tall stools located in hollows and gullies are the most likely to uproot. In fact, in this particular situation a non-extreme environmental event suffices to disturb the equilibrium between the higher tree-induced gravitational loads and the weaker root anchorage, resulting in a collapse. Since the stool uprooting is mainly an endogenous process, we expect a progressive increase of this phenomenon with the ageing of abandoned coppices. From the forest manager's perspective, this situation favours a progressive rejuvenation and diversification of the forest structure. On steep slopes, however, where the forests also play an important role in protecting infrastructure, uprooting events might entail some additional risks. Our results have important management implications for foresters.

Ultrananocrystalline diamond (UNCD) is one of the important triad of nanostructured carbons which includes fullerenes and nanotubes. This new kind of diamond composed of 3–5 nm crystallites is an exemplar par excellence of the profound changes in properties that can accompany the reduction in size of a material to low single digit nanometer dimensions. UNCD occurs in two forms: as a dispersed powder made by detonation techniques and as a chemical vapor deposited film. Two communities of scientists, each focused on one of these fields, had up to now, been working independently of each other largely unaware of the vast synergistic relationships existing between them. The NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW), the basis for the Proceedings, was held June 7–10 in St. Petersburg, Russia to bring the two communities closer together. Fostering collaborations between them, to hasten the exploitation of the scientific and technological treasure trove awaiting imaginative explorers to reveal the still largely untapped potential hidden in these materials.

This Proceedings volume will be of interest to a wide audience of scientists and engineers - indeed all those who wish to become familiar with the unique properties of UNCD particles and films that make them potentially very useful for a wide variety of applications. It is particularly noteworthy that much of the Russian work on disperse UNCD is available here in English for the first time. The outstanding experts in the two fields are represented in this volume discussing the basic theoretical concepts underlying the synthesis and characterization of these nanomaterials on the one hand and describing progress that has been made in several areas of applications. For UNCD particles, applications include their use in nanocomposites, selective adsorbents, colloidal suspensions, microabrasives, lubricants, quantum dots, cold-cathodes and many others. For UNCD films, their smooth, highly dense, pin-hole free characteristics lead to conformal coatings of very high aspect ratio structures and applications in MEMS, biosensors, as well as electrochemical, and nerve prostheses. The films can be made both n- and p-type conducting thus enabling many potential electronic applications such as high temperature, highly rectifying diodes, FET’s, thermoelectrics, etc.

The Proceedings will be very useful as an introduction to an important and rapidly evolving field of nanoscience and nanomaterials; as a text for a special topics graduate course; or as a starting point for those interested in the development of new approaches to problems that have hitherto defied solution for lack of suitable materials. It is to be hoped that the wider scientific community will be as intrigued and challenged by these presentations as were the participants of the NATO ARW.

This book is great. A fun page- turner that really shows what cheerleading is all about. It demonstrates the ups, the downs, the wins and the losses perfectly. Auer shows everything cheerleaders have to go through, from the fun stuff to the hardships. I would definitley recommend this book to any cheerleader, or anyone who is looking for a fun read about the inside life of college cheerleading.

Awesome read...a good page-turner. Seems very realistic and I felt like I was reliving my college years. Strongly recommend it for any college sports enthusiasts.
