Good for General Information, But Isn't Up-to-Date.......2005-01-09
Epstein has an ambitious goal: to produce a tax book that lives beyond April 15th as a handy guide to tax planning. Epstein is only partially successful. Information on various tax credits has been made less useful by numerous changes in the tax code. Her information on the tax aspects of divorce and running a business are much more useful and perennial.
Epstein is challenged by the same problems that plague all tax books: an ever-changing tax code. Nonetheless, the basics of tax planning aren't going to change anytime soon, and so Epstein's book is a good place to start for information on personal exemptions, standard and itemized deductions, tax credits for children and education, tax planning and retirement, taxes and divorce, and various business expenses. Excellent binding (hasn't fallen apart yet, despite constant reference), excellent page layout, and helpful index.
Tons of useful information for a small price.......2003-03-10
Before I had even finished skimming "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Tax Breaks and Deductions" I found it was so useful I sent an email to a friend who was starting a small business and suggested she buy it.
Lita Epstein has put a TON of useful information in a small package that is well organized for finding answers to your questions.

The Equity Trader Course (Wiley Trading)
ASIN: 0792372824 |
Book Description
In the past quarter of a century, the pace of structural change in the equity markets has accelerated dramatically and, as it has, regulation has come to play an increasingly central role in the development of market structure. The purpose of
Regulation of U.S. Equity Markets is to consider regulation's contribution to the efficiency of the U.S. equity markets. Sharply different opinions are expressed on the matter, as the discussion ranges from Congressional oversight, to SEC involvement in market structure issues, to the self-regulatory responsibilities of the market centers, most notably, the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq Stock Market.

Description:
Sellers of U.S. equities who have not provided shares by the third day after the transaction are said to have ''failed-to-deliver'' shares. Using a unique data set of the entire cross-section of U.S. equities, we document the pervasiveness of delivery failures and evidence consistent with the hypothesis that market makers strategically fail to deliver shares when borrowing costs are high. We then show that many firms that allow others to fail to deliver to them are themselves responsible for fails-to-deliver in other stocks. Finally, we discuss the implications of these findings for short-sale constraints, short interest, liquidity, and options listings in the context of the recently adopted SEC Regulation SHO.

Book Description
The book describes a new theory on the origin and diversity of organisms on earth. It shows that distinct organisms arose independently from the primordial pond from a common pool of genes, thereby explaining both the commonality and the distinctions among the organisms living on earth. This is the first ever written book to explain the origins and diversity of life on earthwithout evolution. Modern computer power and new insights into molecular genetics show that primordial chemical compounds spontaneously combined into the genomes for multitudes of multicellular masses hundreds of millions of years of ago. Those that were meaningless perished instantly, but the many organisms coded by viable genomes simply flowered, swam, walked, or flew away from the primordial pond in essentially the same forms that we know today.

The Mystery of t he Genome.......2000-06-15
Mr. Senapathy's approach to evolution is one of the most interesting explorations that I have read and highlights the difficulties of current Darwinian thinking. Too many books gloss over the difficulties of theory leaving the reader to read between the lines. The stark realities of the current difficulties with evolutionary theory are brought out very clearly by the book. The treatment of the statistical problems in the 'evoluton' of genes is devastating, and a fascinating upgrade of the arguments of Hoyle and Wrickramasinghe in Evoluton from Space. Whatever the status of Senapathy's own complex theory, the penetration of the Darwin fog is extremely salutary reading. Darwinian theory seems like a daydream after reading this book. Fascinating.
A scientific theory of life's origin that merits attention.......1999-05-08
Dr. Senapathy presents a bold, controversial, and very provocative thesis about the origin and diversity of life in an exceptionally lucid style. Far from being a creationist, Senapathy's view of the origin of life is very strictly materialistic, and genuinely original.
Senapathy's theory can be taken in two parts: an explanation for the origin of life, and an explanation for the diversification of life. These two parts form a coherent whole united by the basic thesis that life originated by random combinations and recombinations of genetic material in a primordial genetic soup, with only (relatively) slight subsequent modification of the resulting organisms. The style meets the layman where he is, but does not leave him there, educating the reader by painless, even enjoyable, degrees into an understanding of the issues involved in such a theory.
One aspect of Senapathy's theory which particularly intrigues me is that it is a remarkable example of lateral thinking (something I'm not all that good at and therefore admire all the more), which, incidentally, further distinguishes Senapathy from creationists. As I understand it, creationism has tried to discard the following assumption: if organisms are morphologically parallel, they must be genetically related. Rejecting that can be pretty difficult to defend, to say the least, when the evidence is closely examined. Senapathy differs from creationists in that he accepts that all organisms are genetically related, and that this relationship is manifest in morphological similarity, but he rejects a different assumption. The assumption is this: if organisms are genetically related, they must have a common ancestor. Senapathy demonstrates (brilliantly, it seems to me) that organisms can be genetically related without a common ancestor and indeed must be related without a common ancestor because they are genetically related and at the same time genetically unrelated in a way that defies the scenario of common descent.
This theory is not, and does not pretend to be, Gospel truth; as with all scientific theories, it will be subject to change. The book does make a strong case, however that this is to date the explanation for the diversification of life best supported by scientific data. More involved technical debates and discussions have already begun subsequent to the publication of this book, and will be necessary to flesh out the theory in satisfying detail for specialists. But as a seminal work, this book is first rate.

Book Description
Exact solutions to Einstein`s equations have been useful for the understanding of general relativity in many respects. They have led to physical concepts as black holes and event horizons and helped to visualize interesting features of the theory. In addition they have been used to test the quality of various approximation methods and numerical codes. The most powerful solution generation methods are due to the theory of Integrable Systems. In the case of axisymmetric stationary spacetimes the Einstein equations are equivalent to the completely integrable Ernst equation. In this volume the solutions to the Ernst equation associated to Riemann surfaces are studied in detail and physical and mathematical aspects of this class are discussed both analytically and numerically.

Book Description
Non-crystalline solid tellurite glasses continue to intrigue both academic and industry researchers not only because of their many technical applications, but also because of a fundamental interest in understanding their microscopic mechanisms. Tellurite Glasses Handbook: Physical Properties and Data is the first and only comprehensive source of physical constants and properties of these unique, non-crystalline solids. The author has collected rigid data from experiments conducted over the last 50 years and presents here their elastic, anelastic, optical, electrical, and thermal properties. He also provides details of the experimental techniques, explores applications, and suggests directions of future research. The interference and independence of physical processes occurring simultaneously are key problems in material science. With the Tellurite Glasses Handbook, researchers can begin to understand these physical processes, overcome current technological problems, and open up a new area of glass science: the Physics of Non-Crystalline Solids

A terrific collection of cartoon humor........2000-03-03
Rick Detorie's One Big Happy provides fun cartoons featuring kids and adults and one precocious child 'Ruthie' whose pointed observations are sometimes all too acid. Reminiscent of Dennis the Menace but with more social observation, these strips are intriguing and fun.
One Big Happy: Nice Costs Extra!.......1999-12-26
If, according to Rick DeTorie, Nice Cost Extra!, his latest collection is priceless! This book is 127 pages (and a great cover) of laugh out loud fun. Every one in my family, from my wife to my teenage son to my 11 year old twins, and even their Grandparents, find something to treasure in this book. Like anything of true value it transends generations. In a time when humor seems to be based on how shocking one can be, it is a true blessing to find someone as brilliant as Rick DeTorie and his always loveable characters. Considering the overuse these books receive in my house, we always end up buying another copy.
This is a REAL family!.......1999-12-23
If you're looking for a truly funny comic strip that will make you laugh out loud without insulting your intelligence, you've gotta check out Rick Detorie's "One Big Happy"! Unlike a lot of "family" strips, this one actually seems to be based on real people. The adults are neither overly "goody-goody" nor bumbling idiots, and the kids aren't saccharine-sweet or smart-mouthed brats. Every character - Ruthie, Joe, Frank, Ellen, and the grandparents - is just like someone you know - or would like to know. I love this series!
One Big Happy: Nice Costs Extra!.......1999-12-16
Another great One Big Happy book. I read it to my son every night, and it never fails to produce a laugh from both of us. Ruthie's antics are hilarious. Buy this book if you want to laugh. It's no wonder One Big Happy is the best comic strip in the LA Daily News.
Customer Reviews:
Extremely Funny.......2001-01-09
Ruthie, the precocious little girl, is one of the funniest cartoon characters to be created in some time. Between her massacring of the English, commanding attitude and hysterics, you will laugh every time you read a strip with her in it. The other characters, her parents, her older brother Joe and her grandparents are also well drawn and funny. Rose, the grandmother, is particularly snide and funny. One Big Happy is the best new cartoon since Bloom County & Calvin & Hobbes debuted in the 80's.
Cute........2000-08-13
Do you know why the title, "One Big Happy" hesitates at one more word? Because this family is not always perfect, that's why. But it's still an adorable little strip all about patient parents trying to put up with the bratty antics of the spoiled little Ruthie and her smart-aleck mouth. But at least Ruthie is funny sometimes while the icky princessy little April from "For Better Or For Worse" is NOT! Dimple-cute humor and nice cartoony art.
Surely the best comic strip artist working.......2000-02-18
Rick Detorie is surely the best artist working in the medium of daily comic strip. No one gets better facial expressions. And generally no one writes a funnier situation. With the very sad departure of both Charles Schulz and his strip "Peanuts," my vote for the replacement is -- obviously "One Big Happy." As an avid collector of cartoons, I rank this strip one of my favorites of all time.
RICK DETORIE IS A CARTOONING GENIUS.......1999-08-10
I read this book to my son every night before he goes to bed. It never fails to make us laugh. Ruthie is hysterical and I think Rick Detorie is the most underrated cartoonist. Buy this book. You'll love it.
Hilarious!.......1999-07-01
I LOVED this book! Rick Detorie is definitely my favorite author. The illustrations are great, I was reading on the train ride home and I could not help but laugh out loud at times, people must have thought I was a nut! But the book is great to read, Ruthie & Joe are too cute as well as James!
Customer Reviews:
Ha! Ha! Ha!.......2001-08-11
I have two of the One Big Happy books besides this one and plan to get the fourth. Ruthie is the funniest little girl. She reminds me of my nieces when they were little. The whole One Big Happy family make this cartoon a success. Rick has a hit with this cartoon family. I pick up the books and look at them over and over and there fresh and funny everytime. This book is as funny and entertaining as the other books. It is also nice to see how the cartoon strip started and has progressed.
Customer Reviews:
A triumph in the person of one young woman.......1999-09-25
I most strongly relate to Grandma Rose and inter-inlaw relations with Grandma Myrna, yet am not too old to relate to Ruthie. This strip is the first thing I read each morning, yet the book is a well-thumbed reference on my reading table. I quote everyone in the family liberally, so don't start with me - I have Mace in my pocketbook!
HA HA HA HA HA HA.......1999-03-05
I have 5 nieces and its great to see that someone will make little girls how they really are! Ruthie rules! Anyone who has little girls now will tell you sugar and spice are out..its mud and mischief for the 90's and beyond! Great to see the old stereotype crumbling. Except for Charles Schultz "lucy" most little girls in comic strips have been portrade the same way....Mostly sugar and spice and everything nice! HA! Thanks for reading NT
Ruthie rules!.......1999-01-03
Ruthie is in the tradition of Little Lulu,Annie, and Krazy Kat, if you think of her as a girl. Funny, silly, deceptive and subversive, she's hard not to like if you can appreciate a complicated woman. You'll wish she was your childhood sweetheart, even when she's lying outright, making up the most childish nonsense, or just being Ruthie. Not as brilliant as Calvin and Hobbes, but One Big Happy will do.
This book is One Big Happy Read!!!!!!!.......1999-01-03
All of this fun is definitely Rick Detorie's fault. Like his "Should I Spit on Him?", "None of this fun is my Fault" is a fantastic collection of "One Big Happy" moments not to be missed by anyone. As a father of three, I can only say that Rick Detorie has hit the proverbial nail on the head. All of the One Big Happy family is represented, from Frank and Ellen, to Rose and Nick, even Myrna makes an appearence, but this book belongs to Joe and Ruthie and their wonderful view of everyday life. It is said, "Out of the mouth of babes, oft time come gems", from Rick Detorie's Joe and Ruthie we get a veritable "Tiffany's". If you are lucky enough to have "One Big Happy" in your daily newspaper, you will understand how this book can be reviewed so highly. If not, than this book is a must just to see what you're missing. If you have grown up anywhere in America, over the last 40 or so years, there are parts in this book that will have you laughing out loud and nodding at the reality of it all. The rating is 5 stars only because the rating system goes no farther.
Customer Reviews:
Definitely still topical!.......2006-02-19
It's the world of the future as seen through the garish eyes of a 50's advertising man. (And couldn't a good director have fun with that!) What would happen if virtual reality was invented and corporate America got ahold of it? This is a knowing satire on America that deserves to be better known.
very dated.......2005-11-04
I ordered this book because Arthur Clarke referred to it in one of his books, said it was very well-written and funny. However, it's very dated, really predictable, and not at all funny. The concept of mind control gone awry was newer then when people were beginning to realize the kind of mind control exercised by marketing gurus. This is "How to Succeed in Business" pitted against "Elmer Gantry" struggling over the power of virtual reality, although they didn't call it that then.
It's interesting to me that none of the science fiction stories I have ever read, and I've read a lot of them, had accurate predictions about the personal computer. It's very strange to read a book set in the future that doesn't mention the internet or laptops. In this book computers are still described as behemoths with those cards with holes in them...
