The QuickBooks Farm Accounting Cookbook
Mark Wilsdorf Manufacturer: Flagship Technologies ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0967308305 |
Book Description
The QuickBooks Farm Accounting Cookbook(TM) is a step-by-step guide and reference to farm accounting topics, for anyone working with the QuickBooks software in agriculture: farmers, ranchers, accountants, tax preparers, extension personnel, and teachers and students of vocational agriculture. The first 92 pages are devoted to the basics of setting up QuickBooks for a farm business--including ideas and approaches for setting up a farm business Chart of Accounts, ways to set up the Classes list to allow enterprise accounting, discussions highlighting QuickBooks features most farm businesses should use--plus mention of QuickBooks features most farm businesses should AVOID!
Pages 93 - 360 are the reason for the "cookbook" moniker, providing detailed, step-by-step "recipes" for farm business transactions. Topics include everything from basic income and expense entries, to details on handling of more unusual farm business transactions--like how to deduct commissions and hauling from a milk check or livestock sale receipts, how to handle grain and livestock inventories in the QuickBooks inventory system, how to get reports quantities with statistics like average price received per bushel, and more.
Most important, the Cookbook's topics are "compartmentalized" to make it a handy quick reference: all of what you want to know about a particular topic is presented on the pages dealing with that topic. If your goal is to learn how to set up farm operating loan accounts, you only need to read the "recipe" devoted to that topic--there's no need to read multiple chapters just to learn how to solve one problem.
Here are just a few of the topics covered in The QuickBooks Farm Accounting Cookbook(TM):
Recording cash income Deducting expenses (hauling, commissions, etc.) from a deposit Withholding cash from a deposit Recording milk checks, capital retains, and revolvements Accounting for resale livestock Recording patronage dividends Tracking quantities of things you sell (bushels, pounds, etc.) Handling grain inventories Recording cash discounts Handling credits on account at the farm supply dealer Recording refunds of expenses The best way to enter farm & personal cash spending & income Tracking quantities of things you buy (gallons, tons, etc.) Tracking family living expenses using equity accounts Farm asset and liability basics Tracking depreciable asset purchases and sales Setting up accounts for loans and notes Recording loan and mortgage payments Borrowing/paying on a line of credit Backing up and storing your QuickBooks records
The QuickBooks Farm Accounting Cookbook(TM) is written especially for beginning to intermediate users of QuickBooks, with only a few topics for advanced users.

Corporate Profit and Nuclear Safety: Strategy at Northeast Utilities in the 1990s
Paul W. MacAvoy , and Jean W. Rosenthal Manufacturer: Princeton University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0691119945 |
Book Description
Northeast Utilities Company adopted an ambitious new competitive strategy in the mid-1980s, seeking to become the low-cost supplier in New England electric power markets bracing for deregulation. Given its high-cost nuclear facilities, doing so required a corporate turnaround. For a decade Northeast faced increasing public and employee resistance to cost cutting at its nuclear plants. Though management achieved many of its goals, curtailing outlays on nuclear operations meant high risk that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission would close the plants because of frequent, prolonged outages. This is just what happened in 1996. Did management's deliberate cost-containment strategy take nuclear operations to an inevitable regulatory shutdown, and if so, why? Was it the pursuit of executive compensation tied to cost containment that caused undue risk of regulatory shutdown?
Paul MacAvoy and Jean Rosenthal describe ten years of corporate performance preceding the shutdown, detailing aggressive executive decisions, mounting regulatory actions in response to increasingly severe operational failures, and--at the same time--overall improvement in corporate earnings, stock prices, and executive pay packages. They relate the complexities of managing declining nuclear plant operations under ever more pressing budgetary targets. Their discussion of the increasing risk of outages raises the issue of the tradeoff of profit and conservative management of hazard operations.
All the more timely in light of the massive 2003 East Coast blackout, Corporate Profit and Nuclear Safety represents a powerful and cautionary commentary on industrial practices that goes to the heart of effective corporate governance.

The Restless Sea: Exploring the World Beneath the Waves
Robert Kunzig Manufacturer: W. W. Norton & Company ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 0393045625 |
Amazon.com
The Restless Sea is an homage to marine-obsessed scientists. Discover editor Robert Kunzig lovingly describes pioneering oceanographers mapping the mountains and valleys of the sea floor, discovering strange ecosystems thriving in the abyssal deep, identifying strange new gelatinous zooplankton floating in the vast blue mid-ocean realm, finding out how marine food webs work, and (most depressingly) assessing the damage done by pollution and overfishing. Kunzig loves the sea, and he admires those who study its fringes, its surface, and its depths to figure out what makes it tick.Part of Kunzig's purpose in writing the book is to highlight how little we actually know about the sea, especially now that we have the power to permanently damage it. We've got a lot to learn yet, but we've come a long way from the early oceanographers who had very little data to help them map the seafloor: "To say that they relied heavily on intuition in sketching the seafloor is to engage in euphemism: they made most of it up."
But the unknown represents opportunity and excitement for scientists. Kunzig clearly captures the thrill of discovery that makes otherwise sane people jump on boats and head out beyond sight of land, risking seasickness, numbing cold, and even death. Here he captures the moment when scientists realized for the first time that life existed down to the very bottom of the sea:
From the 150 pounds of grey, chalky mud, he and his collaborators sifted five species of mollusk, two species of echinoderm, an annelid worm or two, a sponge, numerous single-cell foraminiferans, and more.... Now the deep sea was, once and for all, alive; and the idea of an azoic zone anywhere on Earth's surface should have been dead, once and for all.
Kunzig's tour of the world's oceans and the scientists who study them is full of the joy of discovery. The Restless Sea makes you understand why a couple of echinoderms might be cause for a party. --Therese Littleton
Book Description
A vivid, up-to-date tour of the Earth's last frontier, a remote and mysterious realm that nonetheless lies close to the heart of even the most land-locked reader. The sea covers seven-tenths of the Earth, but we have mapped only a small percentage of it. The sea contains millions of species of animals and plants, but we have identified only a few thousand of them. The sea controls our planet's climate, but we do not really understand how. The sea is still the frontier, and yet it seems so familiar that we sometimes forget how little we know about it. Just as we are poised on the verge of exploiting the sea on an unprecedented scale-mining it, fertilizing it, fishing it out-this book reminds us of how much we have yet to learn. More than that, it chronicles the knowledge explosion that has transformed our view of the sea in just the past few decades, and made it a far more interesting and accessible place. From the Big Bang to that far-off future time, two billion years from now, when our planet will be a waterless rock; from the lush crowds of life at seafloor hot springs to the invisible, jewel-like plants that float at the sea surface; from the restless shifting of the tectonic plates to the majestic sweep of the ocean currents, Kunzig's clear and lyrical prose transports us to the ends of the Earth.Customer Reviews:

The Restless Sea.......2000-08-31
So much of what I thought I knew about the ocean is wrong. Remember those relief maps you see, which show the continental shelf dropping off like the grand canyon into the abyss? Turns out that's not accurate, the continental shelf actually slopes at a very gentle rate, not as steep as the mountain passes the Tour de France racers climb. The maps exaggerate the slopes by a factor of ten, emphasizing the presence of the features over their accuracy.
There is so much information in here that I was feeling, as I approached the end of the book, that I should go back through and read it again, for all the stuff I missed.
The story isn't told in the first person plural, like a textbook, but rather is related through the stories of the scientists who made the discoveries. For instance, much of our current understanding of how continental drift works was done by a scientist heating a pan of paraffin in his kitchen. Because it's focuses on the stories of the scientists, it's a story as much about the development of science as about strict oceanography, how the limits of knowledge shift as our ability to ask questions and interpret the answers changes.
I could go on and on and on, but I won't. This is a wonderful, fascinating book about a very important topic. Read it.

Gorgious Photography, Interesting Text, & Weak Indexing.......2002-11-18
The chapters are sequenced in a taxonomic order, starting with the Plankton and going "up" through the phyla of sponges, jellyfish, mollusks, etc., with fish and marine mammals at the "top". This structure, while common in underwater creature ID books, is not particularly obvious to the casual reader (i.e., someone who is not a marine biology geek). The chapter names, which are sometimes the Latin phylum name (e.g., Echinoderms) and sometimes the common name (e.g., Sponges) won't help Aunt Martha find "that round green thing with the pointy spikes", and even if she remembered that it was called a "sea urchin" she couldn't find it in the index. That is the glaring weakness of this book: it is hard to look up something in particular unless you already know where to look, and even then the sub-headings aren't in the table of contents and aren't always indexed (Sea Urchins are described under the section sub-heading Echinoids, which are a type of Echinoderm).
So, Aunt Martha will just have to flip through the book to find the sea urchins, and that reveals the glaring strength of the book: excellent photography that makes searching through the pages enjoyable.
Don't get this book as a reference book of North Atlantic marine life; do get it as coffee table book to browse through and to show others what is "down there".
