How to Spot Short-Term Trends, Trading Systems That Work, Money Management Techniques, and Patterns for Profit

Become the ultimate trader!

The Ultimate Trading Guide is your chance to get what every trader wants, but few have: the know-how to develop and correctly use a logic-based, reliable, and profitable methodology for successful buying and selling-now. In this complete tutorial, one of today's most respected analysts and his partners provide you with all you need to know to develop an original, computerized system that works for you.

"Can you make money trading the markets with a system? You bet, and this is the book that shows how it's done, based on decades of research and actual trading."-Larry Williams, Author, Day Trade Futures Online and Long-Term Secrets to Short-Term Trading

"Traders at all levels of experience will find a treasure chest of knowledge and guidance in The Ultimate Trading Guide. Advice from these expert authors, gained over decades of trading, research, and study of markets and systems, is virtually priceless. This book receives my highest recommendation."-Edward D. Dobson, President, Traders Press, Inc.

"John Hill, George Pruitt, and Lundy Hill are the acknowledged masters in the design and development of mechanical trading systems. So it's no surprise The Ultimate Trading Guide gets my highest recommendation for those interested in the mechanized trading of stocks and futures." -Gary Smith, Author, How I Trade for a Living

"A well-written and thoroughly enjoyable book. It is filled with refreshingly new ways of looking at the market, combined with valuable perceptions that can only come from John Hill's years of experience and the ability to see the big picture. My congratulations to John for his tenacity in delivering Futures Truth." -Perry Kaufman, Author, Trading Systems and Methods, President, Strategic Market Systems

5 out of 5 stars Actually Pretty Good.......2004-05-19

I would normally give this only 4 stars but people have been giving Mike Covells poor book on trend following 5 stars (I would give it 1) so Hill gets 5.

This is a good review of a range of approaches to the market. It also gives you (free) a number of workable systems that you would pay a lot for elsewhere. If you email them with questions they will also answer.

Their work on Commoditity Channel Index is limited but so what. I use CCI possibly in the same way that Howdy does but I dont find that missing one (of so many) ways to make or lose money in the markets is much of an issue. There are lots of great strategies in here ... look up Woodies Club on the net if you want a CCI based one as well.

Good book John.

1 out of 5 stars Ultimate Rip-off.......2004-02-09

This is my first Amazon review, I just couldn't believe any reputable publisher or reviewer would embrace such a horrible book!

I am a self-taught trader of 15 years, I love reading traing books, there are currently more than 2,000 traing books in my trading library. Of all the books I have read, this is one of the worst!

The trading strategies/methods presented in this book were poorly researched and the presentation is even worse. Take the indicators section for example, the authors wrote approximately half a page about Commodity Channel Index, barely even scratched surface of this indicator, then presented a table showing their back test result on over 21 individual markets, the results indicated that 20 markets were negative and 1 was about break even. If you are unfamiliar with Commodity Channel Index indicator, you would be missled to believe it is a poor indicator based on their back testing results, but in fact, their testing was based on their incorrect interpretation of how CCI can be used as trading strategy. My onw real trading result using CCI indicator for the past two years averaged over 78% win-loss ratio; I pick CCI as an example because CCI happened to be the best indicator I know. There were just too much poorly researched information presentled in this book, it made my stomach sick when I was reading them, I couldn't help but to write this review, take it whichever way you prefer, my advice to you: run, don't walk, away from this ultimate rip-off!

5 out of 5 stars Full of trading ideas.......2003-05-21

This book gets straight to the point and works almost as an encyclopedia of trading methods, theories and systems. Written by John Hill of Futures Truth fame, you would expect a lot of backtesting and system development info - which there is. As an experienced trader, I did pick up numerous new ideas that might be applicable to my own trading methods and that's really all you can really hope for in any trading book.

Some minor gripes are the somewhat lack of clarification and examples at times, relying only on a single chart for an example before moving on to the next idea. This can be quite difficult to follow for a new trader. Also, the Drummond Geometry chapter is just a verbatim article that can be found on the Tedtick webpage.

Otherwise, this is an excellent keeper book.

4 out of 5 stars A Complete Insight Into The Ultimate Trading Guide.......2002-08-24

No news here. these guys are purely technical. Hill, Lundy and Hill have written their book from years of experience with mechanical trading systems that have made them highly regarded experts. In black and white, what works and what doesn't, will be made clear to the reader from the knowledge of its authors.

It is estimated that 80% of the 30 billion dollars in the managed futures industry is traded by systematic methods. It is also estimated that 80% of the traders lose money. This book was written to allow traders to recognize and exploit an edge in the markets. Examples in both the futures and securities are made to prove the authors' point.

In the beginning, there is the almighty bar chart and a whole chapter devoted to its proper interpretation. According to these guys, all you need to know is in the charts and nowhere else. And with those bar charts a very simple and complete take on the Elliot Wave Theory will demystify even the most obtuse of the technically impaired. Walk-through examples of trading styles and applications of chart patterns are engaging and relevant to all kinds of markets.

The book contains an introduction to mechanical trading systems. Tips on what to look for and where not to look for a system will be very valuable to the inexperienced. Advice on hardware, software, data and testing are also covered, making it a worthy read for anyone interested in mechanical trading.

The authors bring precious bits of wisdom with their experience. Though systems are mechanical in design, the mental toughness required to achieve success is important, and much can be learned from the experienced. Make no mistake, this book is not about easy money, but about the reality of achieving success. As the authors put it:

"There is a giant chasm between knowledge and a successful trader. Few of us are able to make the leap, and those that do must be on the alert or they will fall back into the abyss."

5 out of 5 stars It is the ultimate - but not for everyone........2002-06-30

12 out of 10. But not for everyone. The book is designed to help ~you~ develop a trading system, it does not hand one out to you on a platter. Actually it does serve up many, many, many different systems, tests them, explains them in extreme detail to the point that you could computerise them (if you have that skill) however you won't find any of them work wonders.

If however you are very skilled you will get a lot of inspiration from this book. For example, if you are already very advanced, and have developed your own systems either in your head or on computer.

If you are a beginner / novice you might be completely overwhelmed.

Read the other reader reviews and you'll see generally those who are experienced loved it, those new to trading wanting easy answers hated it / disappointed.

It is one of the few books I am reluctant to promote because I don't want the secrets in it to get out - ha! oh well hopefully most people won't get it.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Hugely Disappointing.......2004-01-21

I am a big fan of the show, but this book is really bad! 1) the before/after photos for each episode are so small, you have to practically squint to see them; 2) why does Alex (first host) keep on getting dissed throughout the book - again (same is in other TS books) - move on, get over it already!; 3) colors on several after shots are way off. One episode mentions the "sage green" walls when in fact the walls are lavender; 4) lots of useless info seems to be used to fill up the space on the page. Frankly, do we really need to know that "...Gen wore her hair in lots of braids...??" Give us bigger photos of rooms instead; 5) except for the same 2 ("I hate brown", and the lady who cries off camera) there is practially NO mention of whether homeowners liked/disliked their rooms. It would have been a great addition to each episode to remind us whether homeowners were happy or not. Also, this book has some re-tread verbiage from other Trading Spaces books. This has got to be the most disappointing book in the TS series!

5 out of 5 stars A great guide to Seasons 1-3 of Trading Spaces.......2003-11-09

Wonderful book. Hardcover heirloom edition. Each episode gets about 1-2 pages. There are pictures of all the cast members going through the paces of doing the show (with the notable exception of former designers Dez and Roderick), a before-and-after of every room ever done by Trading Spaces, and information on the most notorious episodes. Some of the book's features are adapted from the thumbnail Episode Guides that have appeared in the back of some of the previous Trading Spaces books. There are special spreads on key swap, designer chat, and famous reveals. Crying Pam, Brown Jessie, the celebrity shows... they're all here. Great holiday gift for the Trading Spaces fan in your life!

                    Description:
Longevity is inversely proportional to ambient temperature in ectothermic organisms such as fish. However, the mechanism by which reducing temperature over a physiological range increases life span is not known and available data are derived primarily from invertebrates. With a rodent-like longevity and abundant biological resources, the zebrafish is an ideal vertebrate ectothermic model in which to investigate this phenomenon. As an initial approach, the effects of a year-long 10 ^oC reduction in water temperature on global gene expression in tail skeletal muscle from adult zebrafish were determined using an oligonucleotide microarray representing 15,512 genes. Expression levels for approximately 600 genes were up-regulated by 1.7-fold or greater by the reduction in temperature, while a similar number of transcripts were down regulated by more than 1.7-fold. Using gene ontology (GO) classifications for molecular function, two functional groups, ''oxygen and reactive oxygen species metabolism'' and ''response to oxidative stress,'' were found to be overrepresented among up-regulated genes. Transcripts levels for the genes in these two categories were increased by temperature reduction (TR). However, temperature reduction did not suppress lipid peroxidation potential, protein carbonyl content, or 8-oxoguanine level. Additional studies will be required to further delineate the role of altered gene expression and oxidative stress on the longevity-promoting effects of temperature reduction.

                      Description:
Apoptosis and necrosis are two forms of cell death that can occur in response to various agents and oxidative damage. In addition to necrosis, apoptosis contributes to muscle fiber loss in various muscular dystrophies as well participates in the exudative diathesis in chicken, pathology caused by dietary deficiency of vitamin E and selenium, which affects muscle tissue. We have used chicken skeletal muscle cells and bovine fibroblasts to study molecular events involved in the cell death induced by oxidative stress and apoptotic agents. The effect of vitamin E on cell death induced by oxidants was also investigated. Treatment of cells with anti-Fas antibody (50 to 400 ng/mL), staurosporine (0.1 to 100 @mM) and TNF-@a (10 and 50 ng/mL) resulted in a little loss of Trypan blue exclusion ability. Those stimuli conducted cells to apoptosis detected by an enhancement in caspase activity upon fluorogenic substrates but this activity was not fully blocked by the caspase inhibitor Z-VAD-fmk. Oxidative stress induced by menadione (10, 100 and 250 @mM) promoted a significant reduction in cell viability (10%, 20% and 35% for fibroblasts; 20%, 30% and 75% for muscle cells, respectively) and caused an increase in caspase activity and DNA fragmentation. H"2O"2 also promoted apoptosis verified by caspase activation and DNA fragmentation, but in higher doses induced necrosis. Vitamin E protected cells from death induced by low doses of oxidants. Although it was ineffective in reducing caspase activity in fibroblasts, this vitamin diminished the enzyme activity in muscle cells. These data suggested that oxidative stress could activate apoptotic mechanisms; however the mode of cell death will depend on the intensity and duration of the stimulus, and on the antioxidant status of the cells.

                        Book Description

This book contains discussions of some of the most exciting subjects in the intimately related fields of integrability and partial solvability. It presents a wide variety of advanced topics, such as the symmetry approach to integrability and partial solvability, partially and exactly solvable many-body systems, the interplay between chaos and integrability, the inverse scattering method for initial-boundary problems, and new methods for dealing with reductions and deformations of integrable systems. A special effort is made to discuss the present frontiers of the concept of integrability. The articles cover some of the most active areas in integrability and partial and exact solvability. More precisely, the following topics are discussed: nonlinear harmonic oscillators, chaotic dynamics, initial-boundary nonlinear problems, reductions and deformations of integrable systems, Darboux transformations, Yang-Baxter equations and matrix solitons, superintegrable systems, exactly and quasi-exactly solvable spin and many-body models.

                          Book Description

The cluster which is an ensemble of two thousands of atoms or molecules, has emerged as a completely new class of materials at the frontier of materials science. The frontier of cluster science extends so rapidly that the map of the science is renewed day by day. In order to provide basic knowledge and recent information on this growing field, nine world-renowned scientists who are actively involved experimentally and theoretically in cluster science have written this book, which is concise, comprehensive, suitable for students at both the undergraduate and the graduate level, as well as people who work outside cluster science.

An entertaining account of a corporate shark's search for redemption, John Scott Shepherd's first novel, Henry's List of Wrongs, has the virtues of snappy dialogue, quick plot shifts, and readability. Henry Chase, known to business friends and foes as The Assassin, has molded his life in response to the cruelty of his prom date, the beautiful, wealthy Elizabeth Waring, who crowned their perfect evening by rejecting his love. Ten years later, when his abs and his heart are both hard as steel, Henry returns to his hometown to rub Elizabeth's bad decision in her face. Instead, he learns something that forces him to reconsider every move he's made since that night and to take account of the damage he's caused. Shepherd is an accomplished screenwriter (Life, or Something Like It), and while his novel is enjoyable light reading, it's hard not to picture it as a movie (screen rights have already been sold). Emotions are painted broadly: the highs are a little bright and tangy, the lows darker and more ominous than in life. The plot twists often seem calculated: artificial obstructions are thrown in front of Henry like tacks on the road. And after a whip-smart opening reminiscent of David Foster Wallace, Shepherd's prose remains limber but undistinctive. --Regina Marler

Novelists should be daunted by moments when a character describes his feelings. Shepherd, however, has the worst debriefing habit I've ever seen. Characters often discuss a scene that has just passed before readers' eyes, gambling that what the character says will align with what the reader feels. In this novel, people often say how much they were moved. What happens, however, if the reader wasn't, or, worse, if the scene before left the reader flat? In Shepherd's novel, we are supposed to believe in Henry's transformation. Through righting a list of wrongs, Henry "The Assassin" Chase is supposed to rediscover the idealist he once was. It's a fun premise, but for me the "supposed to" was its most vivid element. I never reacted as Shepherd thought I should, and who moves a reader by proffering he or she ought to react?

                          1 out of 5 stars Lumpy Oatmeal.......2004-12-19

I will start this review by saying that the dust jacket claims that Mr. Shepherd writes his book in the attic of the home he shares with his wife, while in his Acknowledgements, the author claims that he writes in his basement. I know. This seems mundane and trivial, but I believe this silly little discrepancy is like a billboard for everything that's wrong with the book. Mr. Shepherd can't decide which is cooler: the attic or the basement.

Because this book is all about cool. Consider this phrase from the novel's opening line: "brain belch of accidental brilliance". Apart from being an inherent contradiction in terms, this phrase also sums up much of what's wrong with Mr. Shepherd's prose. He can't decide what to say or how to say it.

There are parts that are undeniably well written -- a paragraph here, a line there -- but there are also times where the novel actually repeats itself and its descriptions. Likewise, the tone varies from the hip and tongue-in-cheek voice of a ne'er-do-well to the lofty proclomations of a formal, literary narrator. Again, the author doesn't know what to sound like. While the basic premise is moderately intriguing, it is made monotonous and trite by this uneven writing and the unsalvagable dialogue. Every character sounds the same: like the confused, yet pleased-with-himself author.

And finally, the premise, I said, was intriguing, but the story is absolutely ridiculous. Sure, Mr. Shepherd has captured high school's idiosyncracies quite well (in addition to his own distaste for teenagers), but the tale just doesn't hang on these well-written backdrops with anything close to approaching believability. Henry's experiences with the Girl of His Dreams, his reasons for becoming the Assassin, his reasons for writing The List, well, it's all melodramatic sophism, and it plays out weakly.

Ignore this pretentious and contrived first novel of "redemption." Instead, check out Invisible Monsters or Motherless Brooklyn.

                          1 out of 5 stars It's Craptacular Sentimental Pap!.......2003-10-23

I finished this book, threw it across the room and yelled a swear.

It's drivel based soley on melodrama that really goes no where. No hurtle is crossed, nothing is lost, and nothing is really at risk. The guy is a jerk, he decides not to be a jerk (a big step) and goes about doing it. In the process of not being a jerk, he's a jerk. Everyone forgives him with almost no resentment or question, and we are supposed to be moved by this? Bugger off!

5 out of 5 stars a wonderful first novel...must be made into movie!!.......2003-05-05

i was completely absorbed from the first page. I think i read this book in 2 days and hated putting it down.
it is a pageturner for sure. i loved the characters and also his style of writing. it was very young and very fresh.
i agree that this should be made into a movie! but...john cusac and kate winslet please.

ths was a wonderfully refreshing book and i was dragged into Henry's world immediatley.

4 out of 5 stars Oh, What a Sweet Little movie this will make..........2003-03-29

I really loved this book (I know I didn't give it 5 stars, but that is because it was a little too hollywood). It got me. The opening chapters, the part about Henry's teen life are so dead on that I still can't believe it. The book has a silly premise, but Shepard himself knows that. It works the vast majority of the time. It is quick and sweet read. My biggest complain is the subplot of Sophie's secret past. It is a little too much. The reality of it seemed a bit cartoonish and ended too neatly. Still, the rest of the book works. I was surprised by the ending and enjoyed it. It made me laugh (particularly the line about Starsky and Hutch from the Nigerian grad student at the college) and made me a bit misty. It ain't perfect, but it sure is sweet. It seems Jim Carrey will starring in the movie. Perfect.
