On the heels of recent stock market tumbles and deceptions, value investing--the staple of investing greats from Benjamin Graham to Warren Buffett--has roared back into the spotlight. Value Investing Today returns with a new edition, filled with updated information and advice to give investors the skills and knowledge to become successful value investors.
Broader in scope than previous editions, this third edition offers fresh lessons investors can use to uncover stocks that are, for whatever reason, underpriced in relation to their value. Updates to this edition include:
- New chapters on the psychology of investing and corporate governance
- Expanded discussions on the importance of margin of safety
- Increased correlations among world markets, and how to capitalize on them

Very shallow.......2006-11-23
Books on value investing, as I observed, have two apporaches: Quantitative & Qualitative.
Quali: The Intelligent Investor & The little book on value investing.
Quant: Value investing from graham to buffett, John Neff on Investing.
This book is qualitative and very shallow. Good for people who have no idea of value investing.
The book, I speculate, is more like a brochure/prospectus of their mutual fund.
Although there is no "magin formula", I had read many value investing books that illustrate somewhat concrete and detailed approach to analyzing fin statements and ratios. This is book way way too shallow.
Value investing for the beginner from a pro.......2001-04-16
On a recent trip to Brandes Investment Management to consider them as a money manager, I was given this book as the founder of the firm wrote it. It attempts to be a current day update of the Benjamin Graham "Value Investing" philosophy but it's really a current day value investing book written in layman's terms.
If you believe in value investing or if you want to easily understand the principal, then this is the book for you. It's a very quick read, which can be finished in less than five hours, as it has less than 200 pages.
The actual philosophy of value investing and points to look for in a company were brief, concise and very well written. The most valuable part of the book to me was the chapters on value investing overseas where foreign stock exchange results were compared with America. I came away with a better understanding and believe that opportunities for investing overseas would be desirable from a value and diversification standpoint.
A good "skim" read on a tough subject that I still recommend to the right audience.
Explains simply modern value investing........1999-07-07
Successful money manager, Charles Brandes, explains in plain language the important lessons taught by Benjamin Graham. He lays out simply how to screen companies for inclusion in an optimal portfolio, how to construct a portfolio, and how the patient investor can achieve extraordinary returns. Importantly, he demystifies foreign investing and builds on Graham's tenets with a thoughtful discourse on international security analysis. He makes an important case for a heavy weighting in non-US equities, and he defends his case for a 100% position in common equities to the exclusion of preferred equities and bonds. "Value Investing Today" is a must-read for the long-term wealth builder.
A Good Appetizer.......1999-01-02
Charles Brandes had the good fortune to be the broker of the day when Benjamin Graham walked into his La Jolla office one day. Benjamin Graham was then retired and living in La Jolla. Charles Brandes quickly became a convert to value investing and with some encouragement from Benjamin Graham, started Brandes Investment Management. Today, his firm has the distinction of being rated #1 for the last ten years in the category of U.S. investment managers of foreign stocks. Like John Templeton, he applied value investing principles to foreign financial markets with outstanding results.
Value Investing Today by Charles Brandes is a primer for those who want to learn more about investing in foreign markets. The purpose of the book is to cover general principles rather than a detailed discussion of security analysis. Foreign investing is more complicated because of the difference in accounting principles and other considerations. This is a good place to learn the basics but for the meat and potatoes on value investing, see Benjamin Graham's Security Analysis.
Get Value Investing Today out of the library.......1997-11-08
I recently purchased Value Investing Today hoping to find a book that would give me information on how to select value stocks. Instead, what I found was a book that just skimmed the surface on value investing. The interesting part about the book was its emphasis on foreign stocks as value investments. But then the book went into detail as to accounting differences between countries - squashing the idea that an individual could pick single foreign stocks. I think this book would be good for someone who had no idea what value investing was and just wanted to get a broad overview of the subject / technique. I would not recommend this book to someone who was looking for any kind of in depth information. While this book did have some interesting / valuable pieces of information, I don't see it as a book that an investor would refer to often. My suggestion: Get the book out of the library and read it once.

Book Description
This book focuses on the latest developments in the Asia-Pacific community in terms of how deregulation and privatization are bringing more risk to energy companies. In the light of these market changes, interest in energy risk management has grown substantially and is becoming a fiduciary responsibility of energy companies. As energy trading, power exchanges and hedging techniques establish themselves in the oil, power and gas sectors, so then do newer derivatives markets emerge in LNG hedging, whether derivatives or freight hedging. Fusaro and James, as seasoned market practitioners in the region, focus on these market changes and examine the future of Asian energy hedging.
Customer Reviews:
Useful insight to Asia's energy markets.......2005-12-31
This book gives a good insight in to the developments of the regional asian energy markets, with some interesting forward looking commentary on potential developments. Whilst at the same time the book covers what is happening now and practical realities and issues facing energy hedging using derivatives in Asia. The glossary of terms is something I also refer back to time and time again during my work in the energy trading arena. A good book overall, worth keeping in the library of any serious energy trading or investment company.

Book Description
Mountain Geomorphology - Integrating Earth Systems presents the papers of the 32nd Annual Binghamton Geomorphology Symposium, held in 2001 in advance of the United Nations-designated '2002 International Year of Mountains'.
The three co-editors have collectively worked in mountain environments for over 70 years, and brought together internationally recognized experts in mountain geomorphology from 7 nations presenting research on mountain processes from around the world, including the USA, Canada, China, Europe, and South America.
The volume utilizes Earth Systems as a unifying and organizing theme, examining the interactions of the four Earth "spheres" (Lithosphere, Biosphere, Atmosphere, and Hydrosphere) in the context of geomorphic processes in mountain environments. The volume is also a "Festschrift" in honor of Professor John D. "Jack" Vitek, long-time editor of Geomorphology and an outstanding mentor to each of the three co-editors. Papers presented in the volume represent cutting-edge examinations of mountain landforms, geomorphic processes in mountains, and the application of advanced remote sensing and Geographic Information Science technologies for the study of mountain geomorphology.
The book should be of interest to all geomorphologists, and to physical geographers and geologists interested in mountain environments.
Mountain Geomorphology - Integrating Earth Systems is the only book of its kind, and stands as a testament to the importance of mountains as locations for studying the interaction of geomorphic processes within an Earth Systems perspective.

Book Description
Quantum mechanics can describe the detailed structure and behavior of matter, from electrons, atoms, and molecules, to the whole universe. It is one of the fields of knowledge that yield extraordinary precessions, limited only by the computational resources available. Among these methods is density functional theory (DFT), which permits one to solve the equations of quantum mechanics more efficiently than with any related method.
The present volume represents the most comprehensive summary currently available in density functional theory and its applications in chemistry from atomic physics to molecular dynamics. DFT is currently being used by more than fifty percent of computational chemists.

Book Description
Moongobble has successfully completed two of his three Mighty Tasks: He's collected the Golden Acorns of Alcoona and bottled the tears of the Weeping Werewolf. There's only one more Mighty Task to go, then Moongobble will become a member of the Society of Magicians. But this might be the most difficult one of them all. Moongobble must go deep into the Forest of Boodle to recover the Queen's Belly Button, a magical stone that was plucked off an ancient statue by a band of elves. The Belly Button has the power to tempt its owner to do evil things -- and those elves have been causing trouble left and right.
Moongobble enlists the help of Edward, Urk, the Rusty Knight, Fireball the Dragon, and Arfur, an old friend. Even with their help, this task won't be easy. Anyone who attempts to steal the Belly Button and fails will be turned into stone! Will Moongobble be able to successfully steal the stone and resist its powers?
Customer Reviews:
great book!.......2007-08-13
My seven year old loves this series, he truly can't put them down once he gets started. They are fun and exciting, with adventure, but at an appropriate level for a second grader. We are moving on to other Bruce Coville books as his reading level increases, have not yet been disappointed.
Great book.......2006-01-15
We love all the Coville books and the Moongoble series is great fun. Good for younger children perhaps. 5-7
Engaging and Fun.......2005-07-13
Bruce Coville has written a wonderful trio of books for the beginning reader. The characters in this story are amusing, especially the Rusty Knight, and the talking frog. Edward is a bland main character, but serves a purpose as the straight man around whom all the magic takes place.
I will be using the book in my 2nd grade classroom this year, and feel that the short chapters and solid story will prove to be big hits with my students.
The Moongobble series is an excellent introduction to the world of fantasy, and should prove to be a gateway novel for younger readers that will eventually lead them to the Secrets of Droon series, and from there to Harry Potter.
Excellent for younger readers.......2004-12-14
Bruce Coville has once again written a story quite suitable for young fantasy fans. I read to my 5 and 6 year old sons and they always enjoy the magical follies of the less than competent magicians. The scary parts in the Moongobble series are not really scary, which is a plus, compared to Spiderwick where menacing goblins kill pets and dwarves, and some characters die. The very young boy, Edward, being the hero makes it all the more interesting for children. Also the language is much gentler than in Spiderwick. (...) As aways, the drawings added to the appeal as did the handsome production values with a volume sized perfectly for small readers' hands. After the happy ending there is a great picture with all the kids' favorite characters, plus the opening for additional books even after Moongobble has fulfilled his Mighty Tasks. May we hope for more, Mr. Coville?
Exciting New Fantasy Series for Young Readers.......2004-11-24
Moongobble, the wannabe wizard, has successfully completed two of his three Mighty Tasks needed to be admitted into the Society of Magicians, including collecting the Golden Acorns of Alcoona, and bottled the tears of the Weeping Werewolf. However, there is still one task left, and it's the most challenging yet. Moongobble must go deep into the Great Forest of Boodle to find the Queen's Belly Button, a magic stone that was stolen by a band of evil elves. To complete his task, Moongobble enlists the help of his friends, the Rusty Knight, Urk, Edward, Arfur, and Fireball the dragon. After all, the best way to get things done is with the help of your friends.
I have been a fan of Bruce Coville's books for years and years, and was ecstatic to see this adorable new series by him. Young readers will be thrilled to see that there is a wonderful new fantasy series on the market, geared perfectly towards their age group, and parents will be enthralled to find their children delving into a wonderful new, wholesome series that even they will find interesting. Overall, this is a wonderful new series that will be loved by all.
