Book Description

The renowned, iconoclastic head of the Acorn Fund shares his profit-maximizing, risk-minimizing investment advice in a book as irreverent as it is smart.

When USA Today asked a group of prominent professional portfolio managers whom they would choose to manage their personal wealth, the person most often cited was Ralph Wanger (Warren Buffett came in second). Hailed by both Newsweek and U.S. News & World Report as the "dean" of small-cap investing, Ralph Wanger explains the principles of investing in small, rapidly growing companies whose stocks will yield well-above-average returns.

Investors are like zebras in lion country: They must settle for meager pickings by sticking in the middle of the herd, or seek richer rewards at the outer edge, where hungry lions lurk. Wanger shows investors -- whether they are investing in mutual funds or buying stocks on their own -- how to achieve the right balance of safety and risk to survive and prosper in the investment jungle. Destined to become a classic in the field of investing, A Zebra in Lion Country is as entertaining as it is instructive.

3 out of 5 stars Easy read, broad concepts - for the mutual fund investor.......2005-06-05

If you are looking for a book on how to pick small cap stocks, this book is not for you.

If you are looking for reasons why mutual funds are better off than picking stocks on your own, this book will offer you many such reasons.

Mr Wanger invests in what I would conclude as a fundamental-value style and indeed there are certain principles that a reader may be able to extract and apply to his own stock picking approach, eg investing in themes, buying value etc.

However, the more I read, the more the book seemed to promote mutual funds for the lay investor. Depending on your personal preferences, that may indeed be the way to go for some of you.

I offer the following quote from page 237 as a summary of this book:

'Don't overpay, no matter how much you like a company. Invest in themes that will give a company a long-term franchise. Invest downstream from technology. Think and invest globally. Find stocks to own, not trade.'

A must read if you plan on investing in this very competitive market. Mr. Wagner picks his brain for us for his knowledge of this special market.

1 out of 5 stars Ralph Wagner explains how to invest in Ralph Wagner.......2004-02-13

The subtitle claims this book explains "how to invest in small rapidly growing companies".

Well, it turns out that, according to this book, the best way to accomplish this is to invest in small, rapidly growing companies. In all seriosness, there is almost no useful advice in this book about how to pick stocks.

What this book does explain, in extravagent detail, is why you should not pick stocks, you should use a mutual fund, and while we are on the subject, the Acorn fund (which is run by Ralph) has made lots of money. Also Acorn lost some money here and there, you shouldn't get the impression that the author is claiming infallability.

In all fairness, this was a fairly interesting read, and provided some good general insights into investing. But as far as useful insights into choosing small, rapidly growing companies, the reader is left with the impression that this can only be done by professionals. A legitimate viewpoint, except for the fact that this is exactly what the book promises (fraudulently, in my estimation) to explain how to do.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2004-01-19

One of the best books I've read in investing. I highly recommend it.

Mr. Wanger's Book is probably the most honest, sensible, intelligent and realistic book written on investing. Reading this book helps you acquire the necessary logic, method, style, and discpline to use in order to succeed in the market for the long run. Thank you Mr. Wanger.

Book Description

The most thorough, most practical book on small-cap stocks has now been revised and expanded. Stocks with a market capitalization of less than $1 billion are some of the best long-term investments on Wall Street. A dollar invested in small caps in 1926 would be worth $2,843 today, versus $811 if invested in large caps. Top Bloomberg editors Christopher Graja and Elizabeth Ungar explain why adding a small percentage of small-cap stocks to a portfolio helps investors boost returns without increasing their risk.

Many investors have heard the raves about how lucrative small-cap stocks can be. Graja and Ungar show the individual investor how to spot the top performers, explain how these stocks behave, and demonstrate how to incorporate them into a portfolio. This new edition also features an exclusive interview with top stockpicker Peter Lynch, plus valuable tips from other experts on how to identify which smallcap mutual funds are the strongest.

Investing in Small-Cap Stocks is packed with essential contact information, including Web sites, addresses, and phone numbers of the S&P 600 SmallCap companies. It's the jumpstart investors need to take advantage of this exciting asset class.

This book covers the basics but frankly you are going to need more in depth trading strategies to succeed, especially if you want to make short term trading / investing with small cap and micro cap stocks.

Trading small cap stocks is challenging by nature and the stock market doesn't care if you are experienced or a newbie stock trader. The opportunities are the same for all of us, so either youre going to make money or you are going to lose it in favor of the more seasoned traders.

As a small cap trader your homework is all about studying and testing different trading strategies that can help you take advantage of stocks and at the same time protect your gains. Just always keep in mind that a good strategy has to be simple and practical. Complicated stock systems will always make you slow in your decision making process or confuse you from the start.

There are some very good sites on the web where you can access practical trading strategies geared toward micro cap and small cap stocks. One of those sites is Profit From Penny Stocks http://www.profitfrompennystocks.com

They focus on short term stock trading tactics that can help you identify and handle hot small caps while reducing your trading risk.

All in all, stock market trading is all about picking the best stock opportunities and following your buy and sell signals with ease and simplicity. Once you learn to master your trading decisions, you can aspire to produce consistent profitable results.

Hated the book ! The book overstates the obvious and is written on a first grade level. If you know nothing about stocks than maybe this book is for you. The book was a waste of time and money for me.

4 out of 5 stars Good pocket guide.......2000-09-07

This is a nicely organized guide geared for the beginner to intermediate level investor. It is clearly written and gives most of the more solid and less risky principles of investment. The most important contribution this book gives is that it clearly shows how to evaluate the profitability of a company in detail. Whatever kind of investor you are, if you don't know how to do this then scratch the word investing and use gambling to describe your stock market strategy.

It doesn't feel like the author has practical experience in small-cap investing (he's a professor), and a lot of material is just theory. Too much time is spent on the history and controversy of small-cap performance. The figures and diagrams are crude and at times hard to interpret. The facts may not be out of date, but the presentation is.

This book was OK, but it was pretty basic. More information was definately needed-especially to spice up parts on the company financial section. Overall, it offers a pretty simple read, with some "lingo" being explained. This is a great book though for people just getting into small cap investing.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE PENNY STOCKS -- YOU WILL TOO.......2000-03-10

I began my stock market investing with the purchase of small stocks. Back then, they were called penny stocks because some companies sold their stock for just a few cents a share. Later, penny stocks were any stocks selling for less than $3 or $5 or $10 a share. This book deals with how to make serious money from investing in small or start-up companies. Small companies appear to be where the action is, and where the profits are. I like this book. It gave me valuable hints on profiting with small companies. There is another book you must read if you are interested in this subject. Get a copy of MAKING DOLLARS WITH PENNIES: HOW THE SMALL INVESTOR CAN BEAT THE WIZARDS ON WALL STREET by R. Max Bowser. Bowser has been writing a top financial newsletter for twenty-five years. He monitors many promising small companies. He gives advice on what to buy, when to buy and when to sell. He gives monthly updates on the stocks he recommends. I refer to Bowser's book often.

My pen name is Big Al. I am also the writer of this book. When you self - publish a book if you don't review and promote it, then no one will. Which is what I am doing now. I have read dozens of investment books and they all ignore the almost unknown world of small-cap and micro-cap investing. Not to mention my specialty of penny mining stock investing. And yet this is precisely the world where the small investor of limited means can make a killing. Once you make your first killing in my world you will be in it for life. Just like I am. Let me introduce you to my world. A world where you can make a killing on a chump-change investment.
The most exciting thing about my world is that anyone can afford to enter it. You can become a player for an investment as low as $500.

                          Book Description

Recent technological advances have made it possible to perform experiments, once considered to be purely gedanken, which test the counterintuitive and bizarre consequences of quantum theory. This book provides simple accounts of these experiments and an understanding of what they aim to prove and why this is important. After introducing the main theoretical concepts and problems with the foundations of quantum mechanics, early chapters discuss experiments in the areas of wave-particle duality, cavity quantum electrodynamics and quantum nondemolition measurement. The text then examines investigation of new predictions, including the Aharanov-Bohm effect, before tackling the problem of macroscopic quantum coherence. Later chapters consider methods of testing the quantum Zeno paradox, collapse, macroscopic quantum jumps, tunneling times and Einstein-Bell nonlocality. Introductions to the theory behind new types of measuring devices such as micromasers and those based on the concept of quantum nondemolition are also given. Detailed references are included.

                            Book Description

Political corruption is easy to define—the use of public office for private gain—but it isn't so readily seen because politicians cover their tracks so well.

Four of America's most corrupt mayors and their shady dealings are covered in this work. "Big Bill" Thompson, who was mayor of Chicago three times, is considered America's worst mayor, having, among other questionable activities, accepted support from gangster Al Capone. Frank Hague of Jersey City described his town as the "moralest city in the nation" and banished prostitution and pornography, but he saw no evil in gambling and Jersey City became a gambling mecca. Jimmy Walker of New York City was a "good time" mayor and did well as the city prospered, but cared little for the city's money and his own when the Great Depression struck. James Michael Curley of Boston openly asserted that "politics is my business," but he flaunted a lavish home built entirely at the public's expense and was elected again and again, once while he was still in jail.

"I recognized this gambit immediately. It was the old Abe Fortas trick: define the issue so that you and the judge--in this case, the voter--are on one side, and everyone else is on the other side, especially opposing counsel or the opposing candidate," says Terry Mullally, a former prosecutor from Brooklyn now running for district attorney in Boston. "When Fortas was in private practice, he drove his adversaries crazy by persuading the judge that he wasn't an advocate for his client at all, he was just trying to help the court. The more his opponent protested, the more the opponent looked like a shrill partisan who couldn't be trusted to give the judge reliable information." Shrewd, sharply observed inside nuances like that light up almost every page of this debut legal thriller by William F. Weld, the former federal prosecutor and two-term Governor of Massachusetts who never got to be President Clinton's Ambassador to Mexico because of Jesse Helms's determined opposition. Mullally--an orphan virtually raised by cops after his father's death--is a fascinatingly flawed hero for our time, determined to do good even if it means bending the law. He's helped by a fine gallery of supporting players, including an old sportswriter brought in to "Bostonize" the candidate by insisting he say things like "So isn't Murphy" instead of "So is Murphy." --Dick Adler

                              Book Description

"Sometimes the good Lord closes one door and opens another.

"I was basically fired from my job as a federal prosecutor in Brooklyn, although old Tarzan was too smooth to use that word. Assistant U.S. attorneys do not get fired; they move on to other opportunities. I'll say this for the Justice Department, they bury their dead, they don't leave them out as carrion.

"The press had missed the ugly side of the story, but a couple of police reporters were nosing around. I decided the best way to snuff their interest was to get out of New York entirely."

Orphaned as a young boy and haunted by fragmentary memories of his father, Terry Mullally, the hero of Mackerel by Moonlight, nonetheless has schooled himself to success. He makes a splash as an assistant U.S. attorney in Brooklyn but leaves under a cloud of suspicion after some dicey operations in which laws are broken and money changes hands.

Once he has escaped to Boston, to the safety of a white-shoe law firm, Mullally is again bitten by the political bug. Backed by a discontented police union and handled by two young politicos -- a labor organizer and a gossip columnist -- he charms and schemes his way to being elected district attorney, where the same combination of luck, smarts, and inattention to the niceties of the moral code brings success and makes him a star. The twenty daily car rides that go with holding office are eased by thoughts of Emma Gallaudette, sweet and saline, brash, brainy, and unfortunately quite married. No matter. Like many of the obstacles in Terry's path, this proves to be a short-term problem.

As Emma observes, Terry is a man of many moods but only one tense: He lives life in the present. Terry likes to see people smoking nonfilter cigarettes or reading racing car magazines, because it means for once they're doing what they want.

It is not entirely clear whether Mullally is an eagle among chickens or a phony. His twenty-four-year-old campaign manager sums up politics for him:

"Boss, this whole process is calculated to make honest men act like felons. Sooner we all absorb that, the better."

Mullally's past, in the person of a Brooklyn cop, catches up with him at an inconvenient time -- when he seems to have a United States Senate seat in his grasp. His career, his love interest, and his life are all in danger, so with no hesitation he does what any businessman would do, just to preserve his options, his flexibility -- you understand.

Mackerel by Moonlight is a hilarious inside view of American politics, as seen by the iconoclastic two-term governor who once remarked, "You can lead the House to order, but you can't make it think." It is the funniest, most entertaining, fastest-paced novel since Christopher Buckley's Thank You for Smoking and Joe Klein's Primary Colors.

                              Customer Reviews:

                              4 out of 5 stars Weld-worth reading. .......2007-07-19

Former Massachusetts Gov. William F. "Bill" Weld combines lawyerly sophistication with street smarts in a highly readable political comedy/thriller that prolongs a death mystery until the very last page.
Weld's writing is pithy and punchy. Why he choose to narrate the story through eyes of a smarmy Irish-American lawyer escapes me. Perhaps Weld is needling all those Irish politicians he had to put with during his time in Boston's State House. Maybe Weld is slightly ashamed of being a Yankee (he shouldn't be). Whatever the case -- as protagonist Terry Mullally Jr. might say -- it works.
Weld doesn't delve into why his main character or any character would want to give up a mostly honest job with a good salary and private life to take ostensibly less money as a mostly dishonest politician. Perhaps the answer lies in the quest for adoration that Terry and real-life pols found lacking in their upbringings. Maybe part of the answer is Terry's love of people living in the present, making him anxious to keep moving and creating ever new "presents" in seemingly rapid succession.
Most people find politicial campaigning undignified yet it goes on, growing ever more outrageous and expensive. There is something sick about this, a sickness in the heart of America. Hopefully, Weld will courageously take on this phenomenon in greater depth in a future work.
Weld's ample sense of humor and love of the outdoors are on display. Names have been changed to protect the less-than-innocent -- The Boston Globe newspaper is known as "The Daily Mail," while The Boston Herald is renamed "The Gazette." The Lowell Sun is humorously called "The Moon." The Lawrence Eagle-Tribune is referred to as "The Hawk." The mass media's role in perpetuating the shameful political situation in Massachusetts and elsewhere does not escape Weld's notice.
Interestingly, our author refers to New York's major newspapers -- The Daily News, Post, and Times -- by their real names. Wonder what's going on there? Possibly Governor Weld trying to maintain "flexibility."

                              2 out of 5 stars Fishy.......2001-06-07

I found this book in the bargain bin at a super market. I figured that I'd be hard pressed to not get my money's worth on a 50-cent investment. Yet, sure enough, I put down "MACKEREL BY MOONLIGHT" after about 40 pages. I like politics and I like mysteries, so this book, by the interesting former governor of Massachusetts, seemed like a safe bet. Instead, Weld packs within those 40 pages every politically useful (for Weld) character trait he can apply to his lead character, including wholesome affiliations with people of just about every identifiable demographic group in, well, in Massachusetts. Maybe there's a story here beneath the propaganda, but I didn't wait around to find out. You shouldn't either.

I gave this 2 stars instead of 1 because in fairness I didn't finish the book and I guess it could possibly get better.

3 out of 5 stars passable first novel.......2000-11-23

Terrence Mullaly is the antihero of ex-Governor William Weld's surprisingly cynical political thriller. When Mullaly hotfoots it out of Brooklyn and his assistant DA's job, he settles in Boston working big buck criminal defense cases. Much to his surprise, he is recruited to run against the incumbent DA and actually wins. Suddenly, a seat in the Senate and life with the blue bloods seem to be within reach, but then his crooked past catches up with him.

Weld is trying awfully hard to be funny here and the effort shows. Hopefully in future efforts he'll relax a little and ease up on the snappy banter and wisecracks. As is, he's produced a passable first novel that you can finish on a three hour plane ride, no sweat. But don't expect much of it to stick. It's sort of Primary Colors by way of Mickey Spillane.

                              3 out of 5 stars Good book.......1999-10-27

I enjoyed this breezy, humorous book. It's not great (as some of the reviewers apparently require), but it certainly is good. Weld displayed a witty, sly sense of humor and told a good story.

3 out of 5 stars well written but poor characters and mushy plot.......1999-07-27

Bill Weld has written a book from his perspective, which unfortunately is not one familiar to most people. Being a former ivory tower federal prosecutor, wealthy by inheritance and definedly upper crust, Weld demonstrates little knowledge or understanding of how real folks in the trenches think, speak or exist. His cops do not ring true, his legal and political associates are one-dimensional and his love scenes combine the most banal aspects of a hippy diary and a French drawing room. The plot begins nicely but is highy predictable and easy to figure out. The book is well-written, and the author does have some ear for dialogue. Social or economic status, high or low, should not preclude anyone from writing about anything, but the ability to observe, listen and learn are key. Weld seems so secure in his own cosmos that he doeasn't care if it rings hollow with the reader.
