            Book Description

There is a unique constitutional relationship between Aboriginal people and the Canadian state - a relationship that does not exist between other Canadians and the state. It's from this central premise that Patrick Macklem builds his argument in this outstanding and significant work.

Why does this special relationship exist? What does it entail in terms of Canadian constitutional order? There are, Macklem argues, four complex social facts that lie at the heart of the relationship. First, Aboriginal people belong to distinctive cultures that were and continue to be threatened by non-Aboriginal beliefs, philosophies, and ways of life. Second, prior to European contact, Aboriginal people lived in and occupied North America. Third, prior to European contact, Aboriginal people not only occupied North America; they exercised sovereign authority over persons and territory. Fourth, Aboriginal people participated in and continue to participate in a treaty process with the Crown. Together, these four social conditions are exclusive to the Aboriginal people of North America and constitute what Macklem refers to as indigenous difference.

Exploring the constitutional significance of indigenous difference in light of the challenges it poses to the ideal of equal citizenship, Macklem engages an interdisciplinary methodology that treats constitutional law as an enterprise that actively distributes power, primarily in the form of rights and jurisdiction, among a variety of legal actors, including individuals, groups, institutions, and governments. On this account, constitutional law refers to an ongoing project of aspiring to distributive justice, disciplined but not determined by text, structure, or precedent. Far from threatening equality, constitutional protection of indigenous difference promotes equal and therefore just distributions of constitutional power.

The book details constitutional rights to Aboriginal people that protect interests associated with culture, territory, sovereignty, and the treaty process, and explores the circumstances in which these rights can be interfered with by the Canadian state. It also examines the relation between these rights and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Feedoms, and proposes extensive reform of existing treaty processes in order to protect and promote their exercise.

Macklem's book offers a challenge to traditional understandings of the constitutional status of indigenous peoples, relevant not only to Canadian debates but also to those in other parts of the world where indigenous peoples are asserting greater autonomy over their collective futures.

                4 out of 5 stars Really Nice.......2005-10-19

This edition of this book is really nice. There are lots of diagrams that makes it easy for visual learners.

4 out of 5 stars Sufficient practice and clear examples.......2005-09-18

I have used this book for my first year in undergraduate General Chemistry and it has helped me build my basics as well as improving upon them. There are enough problems of each level of difficulty to get sufficient practice. The examples are very helpful to grasp the concept and the extra practice problems further enhance the learning experience. I recommend this book either as a text for a class, or just independent study.

                4 out of 5 stars Simple. Easy 2 understand.......2005-08-24

Tho i'm in 9th, this chemistry book is quite understandable. The chemistry in action sections are nice, but it would be nice if they were explained. the solved problems after every key lesson are a nice touch, providing a good opportunity to check ur grasp of the concept.

4 out of 5 stars refined and competent .......2005-02-04

Typically, this book could form the text for a first year undergraduate course in chemistry. Chang covers the 3 major divisions of chemistry - organic, inorganic and physical. Which accounts for the weightiness of the book. Crammed with material that can keep a diligent student quite busy and, hopefully, appreciative.

You are presented with a very refined text, in its 8th edition. Reassuring, because it has successfully come out in so many previous editions. Hence, you can read the text, confident in its proven usefulness to many earlier students.

The online component, ChemSkill Builder, may also be useful to some of you; letting you gauge your understanding.

Illustrates how maps tell us as much about the people and the powers which create them, as about the places they show. Presents historical and contemporary evidence of how the human urge to describe, understand and control the world is presented through the medium of mapping, together with the individual and environmental constraints of the creator of the map.

4 out of 5 stars A Book on Maps with Meaning..........2000-12-27

Finding this book in the geography section of one of my favorite bookstores was, well, "a find," and especially so because there is a lot masquerading as "geography" or "mapping" these days.

This, as it happens, is the real thing. The British authors have constructed a kind of dream volume for those who want to boost the visual or geographic literacy of their friends, children, neighbors, or students. 'Tisn't a book just for geographers, though those in that profession will love this item. It's at least as much for the many, many, many folks in the world who understand that they don't know what they should about how the world is expressed in maps, and who feel more than a passing need to remedy that inadequacy.

Who's this for? I'd say anyone who has read and learned from the work of Edward Tufte, and as much, for those who revel in the writings of Mark Monmonier, cartography's current gray eminence and a brilliant scholar to boot. But this is also for those who just love maps: The Thelin and Peak SLAR map of the lower 48 states, Erwin Raisz's work, or the luminous cartographer of such great as Eduard Imhof.

The sole drawback is the price -- that's a pocketful of change, and were the ducats sought a few less, this would be a five-star choice, hands down.

Read it, love it, and learn.

Mobile GIS is radically changing the way users can work with GIS since it is no longer tied to the desktop. The rapid growth in the capability of mobile devices has made it possible to take the power of GIS wherever it is needed. Mobile GIS the ArcPad Way is about what users can accomplish when they have access to GIS away from the office. They can collect data in the field, check out data whenever they need it and carry it with them, or download data over wireless networks when away from the desktop.

                      Book Description

The book deals with two central themes: data modeling and management for 3D objects during different time states and the opening of geoinformation systems to a new generation of component-based GIS. The way from first geo-database kernel systems to a component-based GeoToolKit is presented. Furthermore, the implementation of a component-based GIS with geological and geophysical applications is described. With the common data access to a geo-database the geological and the geophysical applications are brought closer together and profit from each other's interpretations of the data.

                        3 out of 5 stars A timeless classic.......2001-05-25

This book shows the very basics of navigation and covers map, compass and even finding your position with a sextant. Though the equipment shown is certainly outdated, most of the information is timeless (except the map section which could have been more thorough and UTM Grids are not mentioned). As a casual navigator I liked the book but if you have serious needs for navigation skills there are better and modern books available.

                                Book Description

This book is conceived as a lecture course on the theory of dielectric and Kerr effect relaxation in molecular fluids. It is based on seminars and lectures to final year graduate students and students preparing for a Ph.D. The book comprises the following: the rotational diffusion equation; perturbative solution obtained from convolution products; Kerr effect response in pulsed electric fields; rotary friction and diffusion coefficients in the case of partial slip conditions; linear detection; electric birefringence in time-varying fields; study of phase angles; the Fokker-Planck-Kramers equation; the role of molecular rotational inertia; and nonlinear dielectric relaxation in coupled electric fields.

The literature on the subject originates essentially from review articles which, however, are pitched at such a high level that it is very difficult for students to understand. Moreover, a lot of details are missing from the calculations in these fundamental papers. This book therefore attempts, in a more didactic manner, to fill these gaps.

                                  Book Description

The novel is set in the quaint little village of Kilcree in the heartland of scenic West Cork, Ireland. Here in intimate detail we witness the raw passions, love-lives, schemes, tragedies, foibles and sorrows of the characters, as the author allows them reveal their true selves throughout this saga of love, laughter, fears and tears. Peering into the innermost thoughts of some of the key characters, the author allows us eavesdrop as they admit their transgressions ... in the confessional ... and much, much more.

The essence of the book was written - on location in breathtakingly scenic Glengarriff, Co. Cork, Ireland - while staying at the hauntingly beautiful Eccles Hotel which was formerly frequented by noted writers including Shaw, Thackeray and Yeats.
