Good overview of how systems work.......2004-05-23
I was looking for a book that described in depth how the various cycles (e.g., Revenue Cycle) worked in conjunction with the various tables. Does an outstanding job with in-depth details where you not only learn the steps, but how the system is updated at each stage. Good material on controls, especially application controls that need to be built into the system. Normally I never look at case studies and assignments, but in this book, they were useful.

This book is a well-written step-by-step map to gaining control over IS/IT costs and strategic planning.
The core of the approach is active benefit realization (ABR), which is a continuous assessment and management methodology that is characterized by: (1) self-calibration/continuous improvement, (2) IS/IT management by all stakeholders (technical and business), and comprehensive understanding of IS/IT and how it supports business functions and processes.
ABR is immediately introduced in the beginning of the book, as well as why the approach is critical to fully integrating IS/IT into the enterprise as a business enabler. The next part of the book discusses key factors for evaluating information systems. This part is rich with checklists, tables and other useful artifacts. Building upon this foundation is excellent material on evaluation techniques, outcomes and benefit modelling (taking an investment-oriented approach that is one of the best applications and services portfolio management approaches I have come across), and the details of micro modelling (the devil, they say, is in the details!)
Once the foundation has been built the book presents the ABR approach as a process. In simplistic terms this process entails three phases: (1) Setting the course (capturing and understanding the business, financial and project views), (2) Formative evaluation (stakeholder management of the project - this approach is nearly identical to the approach prescribed by PRINCE2, which is the U.K. project management standard), (3) Moving forward (continuous improvement and calibration. In other words, consolidating gains and improving upon them in a methodical manner.) The last part of the book is a collection of tips, tricks and traps - this is essential reading and contains the collective wisdom of the authors. Heed every word because there are some real gems here.
I learned a lot from the book, including many standalone techniques for analysis, evaluation and financial assessment that I can use on other projects. As a whole, the approach embodied in ABR is sound and one that I will use on my next engagement that requires an in-depth analysis and formulation of a strategy, assuming of course, that the next client has a strong commitment to follow the course of action set forth in the book. The benefits of ABR certainly will provide a handsome return on the investment and commitment required to make it a success. This book is invaluable and highly recommended for consultants, CIOs and upper IS/IT management. It is also highly recommended for any project team operating under PRINCE2.

Current auditing standards emphasize the importance of auditors gaining a broader understanding of an organization's operations to perform risk assessment (i.e. assess the risks of material misstatement). Auditors' ability to effectively analyze operations in the form of business processes is by definition a key determinant of their ability to appropriately plan and conduct the audit. However, to date there has been little consideration of how best to represent or organize the information required about business processes for audit risk assessment purposes. This paper identifies a number of commonly used business process modeling conventions, and characterizes them relative to the needs of auditors in performing risk assessments at the business process level. To provide a context for the process modeling conventions examined, international standards on enterprise modeling are outlined, and the constructs they identify are compared to those identified as needed for process level risk assessment. This comparison helps provide some assurance that the knowledge needed for audit risk assessment at the process level is similar to that needed for management understanding and control of business processes more generally. A number of commonly used business process modeling conventions are identified based on a literature review, including data flow diagrams, system flowcharts, REA models, event process chains, IDEF0 and IDEF3, UML diagrams, and business process diagrams (BPMN). The constructs represented in each of these models are compared to those identified as needed for process level audit risk assessment, and the merits of each convention are discussed. The paper concludes by noting particular areas where additional research is needed before more definitive answers regarding which process modeling conventions are most appropriate for auditor use are possible.

their common mathematical basis and the thermodynamic relations between them. The mathematical groundwork is laid in a discussion of tensors of the first and second ranks. Tensors of higher ranks and matrix methods are then introduced as natural developments of the theory. A similar pattern is
followed in discussing thermodynamic and optical aspects.

The book by Nye is considered by many people in the relevant scientific societies as the "bible" of crystal physics. In scientific terms, it is a rigorously written book on tensor algedra which which is the mathematical formalism essential to describe the physical properties of crystals. The mathematical complexity of the book is rather elementary and hence could be used for a senior level advanced undergraduate course as well (typically it is used as a first your graduate course text). The first half of the book discusses equilibrium properties of crystals (permittivity, piezoelectricity, elasticity etc.), therefore a rather modest background in physics is needed. The second half of the book that is devoted to transport properties may require some "general" background on the basic principles of transport phenomena and irreversible thermodynamics. This book, in my opinion, is a very well written book that places the physical properties of crystals in an "easy to comprehend" mathematical framework eloquently. It is an excellent text book. I highly recommend it.

The origin of this development is the approach to turbulence from the point of view of deterministic dynamical systems, and this book shows how concepts developed for low dimensional chaotic systems are applied to turbulent states. This book centers around a number of important simplified models for turbulent behavior in systems ranging from fluid motion (classical turbulence) to chemical reactions and interfaces in disordered systems. The theory of fractals and multifractals now plays a major role in turbulence research, and turbulent states are being studied as important dynamical states of matter occurring also in systems outside the realm of hydrodynamics. The book contains simplified models of turbulent behavior, notably shell models, coupled map lattices, amplitude equations and interface models.

This is a great book that is certain fun for anyone who reads it! With multidimensional views, quirky characters, great analagies, and side splitting quotes, this book is guaranteed to make you laugh. I recommend reading all three books in order, to understand the characters better. The characters are like everyone you'll ever know, but put into words better than real life! They grow on you like old friends, with real personalities and minds of their own. the author weaves a hilarious story of Jady, who must have WAY to much time on his hands, and how he outwitts the council, Deludo, and social services... Look out Spawater HERE COMES JADY!!!:)

What the ... ?.......2007-09-14
This book was going along rather well, with pretty entertaining characters and 2 grisly murders in a small town. It was really keeping me guessing, and then there was the end. When they reveal who committed the murders and why, it is very disappointing. It just makes no sense at all. It felt like she must have written the whole book without deciding who the killer was and then just picked someone, possibly going back and adding in a few passages to support the pick, but very weakly.
I was also not very pleased with the attitude towards Jews, but I was only going to take off 1 star for that, since it isn't explicit or vicious. I took off another 2 whole stars for the ridiculous gibberish ending.
Not my cup of tea.......2007-06-02
I am a big Christianna Brand fan (and that was even before the success of the Nurse Matilda stories), but this book did not do it for me. It started out good - an English country manor mystery with an exclusive list of six suspects, but the denouement just didn't ring true. Brand usually writes wonderful English mysteries in the classical style, and she usually has enough red herrings about to keept the reader on their toes, but in this book, the red herrings are rather obvious, and the actual murderer and the motives behind the murders were hard to believe. I will continue to read Brand's books because I do enjoy her writing and hope that the others are back to her usual standards.
More than a great classic detective novel.......2003-03-21
This is a very classic (and british) plot : somebody among a group of six persons killed two or maybe three women by severing their heads with different devices. Two lovely girls, an old lady, and older man, the husband of one of the girls and another one in love with the second girl. Who did it? There appears an english policeman who has known all six for long and who tries to find the culprit, with some unorthodox methods. Maybe he would prefer not to discover him, but he's obliged to by the quick events. You can try your little grey cells, like Hercule Poirot, but it wan't work. Just let yourself by taken by the plot,the author and both lovely girls, and enjoy it till the end. A bit bloody ? Well, not too much, as a matter of fact. And buy other books from C. Brand, with the same policeman and some of the characters of this book, "death of a Jezabel", "green for danger", "death in high heels"... It comes from the 50's, but it's very enjoyable.
