Book Description
Each year, student athletes who aren't big-time recruits miss out on tens of thousands of dollars of financial aid available. The problem is that students and parents don't know where the money is, or how to get it.
The Sports Scholarships Insider's Guide helps parents and students confidently navigate through the twists, obstacles and surprises they will encounter as they seek to find the right college, the right coach and the right offer of athletic financial aid.
Topics covered include:
* Constructing a profile to stand out * Understanding the recruiting process * Why prospects and families get hurt * Negotiating tips and guidelines
Most important, Dion Wheeler debunks the myth that Division III schools do not award financial aid money for athletics. He exposes how these schools get around the rule, and how to get an aid package legally.
Customer Reviews:
If you or your son/daughter is looking for an athletic scholarship-you HAVE to get this book!!.......2006-09-08
This was the first book I've read on this subject and already I feel like I know so much! I don't know about you, but I'm doing much of my son's work in this area, so I feel like I'm doing the reading for him as well. It's important for the parent to be knowlegable even if the child DOES do the work, for they (the parents) will be doing much of the speaking and "negotiating" (key word you will learn much about) for the child. Have the facts to back you up. This author has been around and worn every 'hat' having anything to do with the whole issue of college athletics from parent to recruiter to agent to coach and MORE! You get the impression that you're really getting the inside information that you need to get the best deal for your child's education. Thank you Mr. Wheeler!
It worked! .......2006-03-08
A friend's daughter who followed the recommendations for overcoming the Division III confusion & duplicity and successfully used the Ultimate Negotiating Weapon chapter recommended this book to us. Our daughter is a high school sophomore and wants to play ball in college. After reading the book, I know we will be prepared for every step of the recruiting process.

Amazing.......2006-01-12
This is a great book if you have a high school athlete who wants to play in college. It really opened my eyes and one coach did something the book predicted he would.
An essential tool to have.......2005-12-23
Prior to acquiring this book we knew next to nothing about the whole process. It is especially helpful for those who live in areas where a potential scholarship candidate is not likely to be seen by very many if any recruiters. The author does a great job in laying out a step by step process that a potential college athlete should take beginning long before their senior year in high school. He stresses over and over that it will not be easy and success will likely only be achieved through the same hard work that led to the development of that person's athletic skills. A couple of areas that were not covered as well as I'd have liked were a more delineated seperation of the strategies for Div 1 & 2 schools as opposed to Div 3 and more discussion of the pluses and minuses of parental involvement. These are not significant drawbacks, however, and I would give the book 4 1/2 stars if possible.
Excellent Guide!.......2005-05-03
This is an outstanding way to gain the knowledge needed to go up against the college coaches and recruiters and still come out ahead of the game. I found this to be an easy read full of valuable information and marvelous insight into the world of college athletic scholarships.

Book Description
We’re all natural born chemists. Every time we cook, clean, take a shower, drive a car, use a solvent, such as fingernail polish remover, or perform any of the countless everyday activities that involve complex chemical reactions we’re doing chemistry. You might even say that we’re all participating in a grand chemistry experiment that started with the first human who mixed pigments to do a cave painting. Why do so many of us desperately resist learning chemistry when we’re young? Maybe it has something to do with the way it’s taught in school.
Now there’s a fun, easy way to learn basic chemistry. Whether you’re studying chemistry in school and you’re looking for a little help making sense of what’s being taught in class, or you’re just into learning new things for their own sake, Chemistry For Dummies gets you rolling with all the basics of matter and energy, atoms and molecules, acids and bases, and much more. In no time you’ll:
- Understand atomic structure and function
- Use the Periodic Table of elements
- Know what happens when matter changes from one state to another
- Explore ionic and covalent bonding
- Get a handle on chemical reactions
- Perform simple chemistry calculations
- Understand acids, bases, pHs, antacids, and gases
- Make sense Boyle’s Law, Avrogadro’s Law and other key laws in chemistry
Packed with examples of chemistry in action in everyday life, Chemistry For Dummies is a fascinating exploration of broad range of topics in chemistry, including:
- States of matter, from the macroscopic to the microscopic
- Understanding how the elements are arranged in the Periodic Table
- Nuclear chemistry, radioactivity and radioactive decay
- Positive and negative ions and ionic compounds
- Covalent bonding in covalent compounds
- Chemical reactions, chemical equilibrium, and electrochemistry
- The mole and how it’s used to calculate chemical reactions
- Great serendipitous discoveries in chemistry
- Environmental chemistry
Written in plain English and requiring only basic math, Chemistry For Dummies puts you on the fast track to mastering the basics of chemistry.
Customer Reviews:
not intended for dummmies.......2007-08-12
It was a bit too detailed for my liking. I felt it could have been broken down into more laymans terms with more examples. I found it difficult to stay interested. it was more for a person going to be a chemist rather than a person trying to get a step ahead for a college chemistry course
Chemisty for Dummies.......2007-01-17
It was helpful as well as could be. For me Chemistry is a very difficult subject to understand, it did help clarify some areas.
Read before you take chemistry 101........2006-07-20
I bought this book as a supplement to my Chemistry 101 textbook. I was really looking for a more complete explanation of electron configuration, which I didn't find this book to be that helpful with. Overall, I thought this book helped to reinforce some of the basic concepts, but didn't really have much of an impact on my grade. I would recommend this book to someone who wants an overview of chemistry before taking the course or to someone who needs to brush up on basic chemistry before taking a more advanced course. It can also be helpful if you're having trouble with a particular topic. I did enjoy the supplemental information in the book having to do with chemistry of everyday life.
No Dummy would ever take Chemistry.......2006-06-22
One thing I always enjoyed about the "for Dummies" series is the sense of humor and real realism in them. This book does an OK job, and is written by a Professor who understands what students struggle with and tries to make it as simple as possible. But Chemistry is a very complex and vast subject, no one book could contain every aspect of it. This book should be seen as a review or a brush up on chemistry, it by no means covers all the topics you will take in a Inorganic Chemistry class, especially the farther you go into the semester. The fact is most people who will be using this book are those students entering into Inorganic Chemistry, or General Chemistry. I do feel he could devote a few of the chapters to topics that will discussed in most Inorganic chemistry textbooks instead of such things as Organic Chemistry, which is a subject unto itself, air pollution, water pollution, and chemistry in the home for example. All relevant topics, but not really going to help you get a passing grade on a test. This is a supplement to your textbook that I feel is well worth spending a few bucks on and using it to your advantage.
Excellent introduction to chemistry!.......2006-03-08
This book is an excellent introduction to chemistry. If all 'for dummies' books are as good as this one, I will certainly buy more of them. I have a background in natural sciences myself (master's degree in mathematics), but I never studied chemistry at the university (or in high school for that matter). Given this background, I was afraid that a 'for dummies' book would be too dumbed down. I was happy to learn that this is not the case. I was surprised at the degree of understanding I got from this book. You actually learn how electrons take part in reactions (valence numbers and all that), and how to do simple calculations. This means that you learn enough theory to predict to a certain extent what will happen in a reaction. In addition there are lots of real life examples, with chapters on organic chemistry, pollution, chemistry in the home, and so on. This book is not meant to replace a university text book of course, but I doubt if you learn more theory than this in a high school course in chemistry. Actually I would think you learn less in a high school course, since I think some of the topics would be difficult for high school students. But of course you learn to do a few experiments in high school, which this book could never teach you (it would probably be irresponsible to try this in self-study book).

The Nuts and Bolts of Organic Chemistry: A Student's Guide to Success
ASIN: 0764569023 |
Book Description
A plain-English guide to one of the toughest science courses around
Organic chemistry is rated among the most difficult courses that students take and is frequently the cause of washout among pre-med, medical, and nursing students. This book is an easy-to-understand and fun reference to this challenging subject. It explains the principles of organic chemistry in simple terms and includes worked-out problems to help readers get up to speed on the basics.
Customer Reviews:
Chemistry.......2007-08-24
Had been a while siince i took general chemistry and so found organic a little hard. My professor suggested buying this book it was the best $19.99 that i ever spent. Too bad there was no guide for Organic 2!
There are better supplement books..........2007-08-10
Needing a supplement to my Organic Chemistry textbook I picked this up, which was more or less a waste. It simply doesn't provide enough to better understand college level Organic Chemistry, maybe High School. It read and felt like a dumbed down bad textbook, with bad attempts at humor thrown in; maybe to dull up the reading. Don't get me wrong there are helpful parts of the book... just few and far between. After my disappointment I picked up Organic Chemistry Demystified, a definite college/grad level supplement which was very good, and the quizzes helped immensly.
Truly excellent.......2007-06-28
This book is an excellent way to begin to learn Organic Chemistry. The book covers most of what you will learn in Organic Chemistry I, and ends by covering the first few topics in Organic Chemistry II.
It expounds the material in such a way that almost any body can understand it. I personally struggle quite a bit with science, and often find textbooks (and even review books) convoluted and confusing. This book however, really lays some good foundations to begin to learn Organic Chemistry. It explains the basics in a clear, concise manner. The writing style is easy and conversational, so it is possible to read the chapters fairly quickly. I find that reading this book really saves me time in the long run. I read this book first, then I read through my textbook and attend lecture. Since I have already begun to understand the basic concepts, I can focus more on details. This really cuts down the amount of time I have to spend reading and re-reading my textbook. I develop an understanding for the material more quickly and more thoroughly than by just reading the textbook and going to lecture. It also includes lots of little tips on how to solve organic chemistry problems that also save you time in the long run.
However, make no mistake, this book is NOT intended to teach you everything you need to know in Organic Chemistry. I believe it is best used as an introduction or supplement to lay the foundations for more detailed material covered in textbooks and in lectures. In other words, this book could be the skeleton, and your textbook and lecture would be the muscles, ligaments, etc. that flesh out the skeleton. That said, I have found this book to be extremely helpful. I wish that they have an Organic Chemistry II for Dummies!
Dummy Chem.......2007-05-17
I found the book extremely helpful. I used it as a supplemental review to help me study for my Organic Chemistry Final and for the Medical College Admission Test. The book covers the foundational concepts thoroughly and in an easy to read, easy to understand, format. It is no susbstitute for a real Organic Chemistry class, but it is a close second and if you read it alongside of your textbook you'll be amazed at how much easier the class becomes. After reading it, I found that I was actually able to predict the direction of many reactions, even though I had never seen that particular reaction before. I was using the authors website, [...] All in All a great buy.
Pretty good........2007-05-06
The book is helpful, but like most in the "for dummies" series, it just doesn't present ENOUGH. I'd been out of school for a few years, and was really looking for something supplemental outside of class. This book, what there is of it, does help, but there isn't nearly enough of it. In their effort to shorten it to make it seem less of a textbook, it left me feeling rushed, and lacking something; especially at test time. More examples, problems and solutions, and descriptions would have been great.

Book Description
A compendium of novel information on molecular-scale science and the application of nanocarbon, nanosilicon and biopolymer integrated nanosystems. During the 20th century, molecular-scale science and nanotechnology developed rapidly, leading to the construction of innovative materials - nanosystens from molecules (fullerenes), supramolecules (nanotubes, peapods, polymers, biopolymers (DNA, protein and their complexes) and semiconductor nanoparticles (nano-Si, SiOx, Si/SiGe dots, metal nanowires). This book presents exciting new developments of the early 21st century. Significant progress has been made in nanotechnology of building blocks for integrated nanosystems, single and assembled molecules, nanoparticles characterisation, and multifunctional applications of nanosystems. The realisation and the application of novel multifunctional nanosystems in electronics, optics, biomedicine (nano-bioelectronic devices based on DNA and proteins, silicon nanocrystal memory devices, monolithically integrated silicon photonics, nanocapsules, biosensor nanosystems) are described by well known experts.
