    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Decent Primer for Beginners.......2004-01-12

This is an excellent introduction to analyzing financial statements, at least for those who have never done so before or who have no background in business. It even is of benefit to seasoned financial people who don't necessarily spend a lot of time reviewing financial statements.

It covers quite a bit of information in a relatively small number of pages: taxation, inventories, cash flow, depreciation, capital investments, and even intangibles like Research and Development and market position. It is well organized and presented in plain Englsih, much to its credit.

However, keep in mind that this is more of a starting point. If you plan on spending a lot of time doing indepth analysis of financial statements, I would recommend starting with this book to provide the basics and then moving on to a more technical and detailed volume. You might want to pick an accounting and/or finance course along the way, too.

3 out of 5 stars make it easily.......2001-08-28

with this book it will be easy for any one to start reading abourt financial statements.

2 out of 5 stars Not As Good As They Say.......2001-08-14

I bought this guide to financial statements, and I was impressed on how much was covered in such a short book. However, much is vague and misleading to the reader. I would recommend questioning why all the reviewers that rank this book so well are from PA. Those reviews are undoubtably from people representing the authors. You may want to look elsewhere for more thourough input on financial analysis.

2 out of 5 stars Good for novices.......2001-08-14

This is a good book if you do not know anything about financial statements analysis. However, since it belongs to the "Pocket MBA series", one would expect more advanced content.

        Book Description

US Conventional economic analysis of property rights in natural resources is too narrow and restrictive to allow for effective comparisons between alternative institutional structures. In this book, a conceptual framework is developed for the analysis of these structures with illustrative application to the allocation of water resources. Ray Challen introduces and develops a model for the analysis of the problems involved in institutional choice that takes into account constraints in institutional change imposed by history and the value of maintaining options in an uncertain future. The emphasis of institutional analysis shifts from assessing the benefits of particular property rights regimes in isolation to considering the distribution of property rights between levels of governments, communities and individuals in an institutional hierarchy. Conceptual developments in institutional theory are illustrated by using a case study of institutional change in the regulation of water use in irrigated agriculture.

          Description:
New institutional economics and its forerunners have, we argue made important contributions to the evolving agenda of ecological economics. The conceptualisation of environmental problems as instances of interdependence and the acknowledgement of positive transaction costs are key insights into the nature of environmental problems. We also discuss how plurality of behavioural motivations and limited cognitive capacity have important implications for environmental decision making and its analysis. We show how evolutionary and collective action theories offer complementary takes on the choice and change of environmental governance institutions and how the concept of social capital can enrich analyses of environmental governance. We conclude that an emerging institutional ecological economics has the greatest relative advantage in analysing the design, implementation and effectiveness of environmental governance solutions.

                  Book Description

Intended for students of intermediate organic chemistry, this text shows how to write a reasonable mechanism for an organic chemical transformation. The discussion is organized by types of mechanisms and the conditions under which the reaction is executed, rather than by the overall reaction as is the case in most textbooks. The treatment emphasizes unifying principles, showing how common mechanisms link seemingly disparate reactions. Each chapter discusses common mechanistic pathways and suggests practical tips for drawing them. Worked problems are included in the discussion of each mechanism, and "common error alerts" are scattered throughout the text to warn readers about pitfalls and misconceptions that bedevil students. Each chapter is capped by a large problem set.

The author has drawn on his own research and the current literature to ensure that appropriate attention is given to topics across the range of modern organic chemistry. The text is unique in its inclusion of a chapter on reactions mediated or catalyzed by transition metals, an area in which mechanistic understanding is now essential. Relatively new topics such as olefin metathesis and cycloaromatization are covered without giving short shrift to more traditional areas such as carbonyl chemistry. The text assumes a basic knowledge of organic chemistry. It can be used either in a formal course or by students working on their own, and will be particularly useful for graduate students studying for qualifying examinations. It will also be useful to students and researchers in biochemistry, pharmacology, and inorganic chemistry.

"This is an excellent and well-presented work.... The author ... has succeeded well in treating the central ideas of reactivity and selectivity in an integrated whole. The clear style of writing, the well chosen examples, and the ... concise summaries of the main points provided at the end of each chapter should enable the reader to easily consolidate what has been learned.... The book is indeed a little work of art."

-- Jens Hartung, Angewandte Chemie International Edition

"I have taught a one-credit course with this book for three years, and, uniformly, the students have rated this book highly for its clarity and for the scope of the problems. ... This book does an excellent job at its stated goal: 'to teach students to come up with reasonable mechanisms for reactions they have never seen before.'"

                  -- Amy Howell, Synthesis

"I have just finished my first year of graduate studies in organic chemistry at Duke University. I just wanted to let you know how much your book got me through the past year of course work.... When it came to mechanisms, I found the clarity and thoroughness I needed only in your book. It was impressive how you were able to present so much information in a clear and comprehensive manner yet keep the book so manageable in size. In addition to the text, I also was able to benefit from the problems.... Great practice!! The on-line answers are much better than looking up answers by reference.... I am reading it again this summer in preparation for my preliminary exam next spring."

                  -- David Gooden

5 out of 5 stars basics for organic chemist.......2007-05-10

This book is excellent for reaction mechanism. This book is helpful for the undergraduate's organic chem 2 and the grad school's reaction mechanism class. I learned how to move the electron in reasonable way. So in one word, this book is awesome book that I ever read for practicing reaction mechanism.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book on Mechanisms.......2006-11-04

I bought this book to practice mechanisms because I'll be taking a physical organic class in the spring that uses them heavily. I used this book instead of sitting in on a sophomore organic class, because by job as a TA conflicted.

Anyway, this book is extraordinary. Dr. Grossman has taught me so many things about how to write a correct mechanism and how to recognize a bad mechanism when I see one. The book is written in a very clear and friendly manner and it's really quite hard to put down when you start reading it.

The book also has practice problems and the book's website has the answers, giving even more incentive to practice mechanisms.

5 out of 5 stars Money well spent........2006-03-21

This compact but content-rich book is ideal for students who have completed at least their first year of organic chemistry (some physical chemistry is helpful but not critical) and wish to improve their understanding of the subject. The writing style is generally remarkably clear and readable; the author manages to make an inherently intimidating subject surprisingly easy to approach and understand.

I would recommend it to any student of chemistry, regardless of whether it fits into your scheduled courses.

5 out of 5 stars Orgo Made Easy!.......2005-09-30

This book is a condensed version of my text book. With this book, GOD and "Orgo for dummies", I aced Organic the first time through.

5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Easy to Read and Understand.......2005-09-04

Being a PhD student in organic chemistry, I have read a lot of chemistry books in my days, and never have I come across a book that's understandable without a teacher's explanation. The numerous examples and pictures makes understanding what the author is writing about a breeze. I would highly suggest this book to anyone who is looking into pursuing a degree in Chemistry. It has already helped me out a great deal and I'm barely half way through!

                      Book Description

The theory of H-infinity control is very popular because of its usefulness for robust control design combined with performance optimization. The theory is well developed for finite-dimensional systems and it is the purpose of this book to extend the major finite-dimensional state-space results to a large class of distributed parameter systems. The class of distributed parameter systems treated in the book contains many models for delay systems, as well as partial differential equations, and allows for unbounded inputs and outputs. A substantial part of the book is devoted to the exposition of the nice mathematical and system theoretic properties of this class. Furthermore, some basic examples are given.

As in the finite-dimensional state-space approach to the problem, the solvability of the H-infinity control problem is related to the solvability of Riccati equations, the difference being that in this book the Riccati equations are operator valued.

The book assumes a basic knowledge about infinite-dimensional systems and is intended for research workers and graduate students

                      Book Description

Neuroscience is ripe for a paradigm change as Freeman and Mountcastle describe. Brain Oscillations provide an important key to this change. In this book the functional importance of the brain's multiple oscillations is treated with an integrative scope. According to the author, neurophysiology and cognition demand integrative approaches similar to those of Galilei and Newton in physics and of Darwin in biology. Not only the human brain but also lower brains and ganglia of invertebrates are treated with electrophysical methods. Experiments on sensory registration, perception, movement, and cognitive processes related to attention, learning, and memory are described. A synopsis on brain functions leads to a new neuron assemblies doctrine, extending the concept of Sherrington, and new trends in this field. The book will appeal to scientists and graduate students.

5 out of 5 stars A new dimension for brain as a system.......2000-10-13

This book (in two volumes) provides a new dimension for understanding the brain as the larger picture. Erol Basar shares his views on new approaches in brain dynamics. During the former decades the scholars were able to identify and explain the 'units' of brain and its functions. Now it is the time for compiling all the smaller components and creating the whole system. The book has both the explanation of techniques and theories behind it. Erol Basar's insight will be very useful for new research studies and for the 'curious' readers of this toppic.

4 out of 5 stars What the world needs now.......2005-11-01

This book is a very witty and entertaining read. Chris Wham has managed to create characters that invite both ridicule and empathy. It was refreshing to find a book that articulates many of my frustrations at our country's current climate of religious conservatism.

5 out of 5 stars The Miracle Pancake of Delgado, Texas: An Alternative View of the Divine.......2005-09-13

Mr. Wham's witty and astute discourse on the trials and tribulations of the search for spiritual meaning revolves around the sometimes surreal dreams of no less an Entity than God Himself. Or should I say Herself? Or Itself? It all depends on what day it is and what pancake you're looking at. But that's okay. After all, aren't we all a little confused sometimes about what God is and where that confusion takes us in our search for spiritual answers? While The Miracle Pancake of Delgado, Texas doesn't give any perfect formulas about where to find the answers to our spiritual questions, or what those answers might be, it does give us a number of entertaining choices to ponder and pokes some good fun at all of us in our search.

5 out of 5 stars Skewering social anomolies, one at a time..........2005-08-26

A quick read, incredibly funny...Wham manages to get in equal jabs at psycho-babblers, artistes, action flick heroes, football players, and everyone's favorite, the TV preacher. The story gets in close, juxtaposing true believers against the sleazy suits dying to make a dime off anything. Truly the best book I've read in a long time.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books I've read in along time.......2005-08-14

I devoured this book. One of the best works of fiction I have read in a long time. The characters are quirky and real-straight out of Texas. Chris has written a book that is funny and entertaining but it also has a great message. Read this book and pass it on.
