Decent Primer for Beginners.......2004-01-12
It covers quite a bit of information in a relatively small number of pages: taxation, inventories, cash flow, depreciation, capital investments, and even intangibles like Research and Development and market position. It is well organized and presented in plain Englsih, much to its credit.
However, keep in mind that this is more of a starting point. If you plan on spending a lot of time doing indepth analysis of financial statements, I would recommend starting with this book to provide the basics and then moving on to a more technical and detailed volume. You might want to pick an accounting and/or finance course along the way, too.

Institutions, Transaction Costs and Environmental
Ray Challen Manufacturer: Edward Elgar Publishing ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1840642505 |
Book Description
US Conventional economic analysis of property rights in natural resources is too narrow and restrictive to allow for effective comparisons between alternative institutional structures. In this book, a conceptual framework is developed for the analysis of these structures with illustrative application to the allocation of water resources. Ray Challen introduces and develops a model for the analysis of the problems involved in institutional choice that takes into account constraints in institutional change imposed by history and the value of maintaining options in an uncertain future. The emphasis of institutional analysis shifts from assessing the benefits of particular property rights regimes in isolation to considering the distribution of property rights between levels of governments, communities and individuals in an institutional hierarchy. Conceptual developments in institutional theory are illustrated by using a case study of institutional change in the regulation of water use in irrigated agriculture.

The Art of Writing Reasonable Organic Reaction Mechanisms
Robert B. Grossman Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
Accessories:
ASIN: 0387954686 |
Book Description
Intended for students of intermediate organic chemistry, this text shows how to write a reasonable mechanism for an organic chemical transformation. The discussion is organized by types of mechanisms and the conditions under which the reaction is executed, rather than by the overall reaction as is the case in most textbooks. The treatment emphasizes unifying principles, showing how common mechanisms link seemingly disparate reactions. Each chapter discusses common mechanistic pathways and suggests practical tips for drawing them. Worked problems are included in the discussion of each mechanism, and "common error alerts" are scattered throughout the text to warn readers about pitfalls and misconceptions that bedevil students. Each chapter is capped by a large problem set.
The author has drawn on his own research and the current literature to ensure that appropriate attention is given to topics across the range of modern organic chemistry. The text is unique in its inclusion of a chapter on reactions mediated or catalyzed by transition metals, an area in which mechanistic understanding is now essential. Relatively new topics such as olefin metathesis and cycloaromatization are covered without giving short shrift to more traditional areas such as carbonyl chemistry. The text assumes a basic knowledge of organic chemistry. It can be used either in a formal course or by students working on their own, and will be particularly useful for graduate students studying for qualifying examinations. It will also be useful to students and researchers in biochemistry, pharmacology, and inorganic chemistry.
"This is an excellent and well-presented work.... The author ... has succeeded well in treating the central ideas of reactivity and selectivity in an integrated whole. The clear style of writing, the well chosen examples, and the ... concise summaries of the main points provided at the end of each chapter should enable the reader to easily consolidate what has been learned.... The book is indeed a little work of art."
-- Jens Hartung, Angewandte Chemie International Edition
"I have taught a one-credit course with this book for three years, and, uniformly, the students have rated this book highly for its clarity and for the scope of the problems. ... This book does an excellent job at its stated goal: 'to teach students to come up with reasonable mechanisms for reactions they have never seen before.'"
-- Amy Howell, Synthesis
"I have just finished my first year of graduate studies in organic chemistry at Duke University. I just wanted to let you know how much your book got me through the past year of course work.... When it came to mechanisms, I found the clarity and thoroughness I needed only in your book. It was impressive how you were able to present so much information in a clear and comprehensive manner yet keep the book so manageable in size. In addition to the text, I also was able to benefit from the problems.... Great practice!! The on-line answers are much better than looking up answers by reference.... I am reading it again this summer in preparation for my preliminary exam next spring."

H-Infinity-Control for Distributed Parameter Systems: A State-Space Approach (Systems & Control: Foundations & Applications)
Bert van Keulen Manufacturer: Birkhäuser Boston ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0817637095 |
Book Description
The theory of H-infinity control is very popular because of its usefulness for robust control design combined with performance optimization. The theory is well developed for finite-dimensional systems and it is the purpose of this book to extend the major finite-dimensional state-space results to a large class of distributed parameter systems. The class of distributed parameter systems treated in the book contains many models for delay systems, as well as partial differential equations, and allows for unbounded inputs and outputs. A substantial part of the book is devoted to the exposition of the nice mathematical and system theoretic properties of this class. Furthermore, some basic examples are given. As in the finite-dimensional state-space approach to the problem, the solvability of the H-infinity control problem is related to the solvability of Riccati equations, the difference being that in this book the Riccati equations are operator valued.
The book assumes a basic knowledge about infinite-dimensional systems and is intended for research workers and graduate students

Brain Function and Oscillations: Volume II: Integrative Brain Function. Neurophysiology and Cognitive Processes (Springer Series in Synergetics)
Erol Basar Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 3540643451 |
Book Description
Neuroscience is ripe for a paradigm change as Freeman and Mountcastle describe. Brain Oscillations provide an important key to this change. In this book the functional importance of the brain's multiple oscillations is treated with an integrative scope. According to the author, neurophysiology and cognition demand integrative approaches similar to those of Galilei and Newton in physics and of Darwin in biology. Not only the human brain but also lower brains and ganglia of invertebrates are treated with electrophysical methods. Experiments on sensory registration, perception, movement, and cognitive processes related to attention, learning, and memory are described. A synopsis on brain functions leads to a new neuron assemblies doctrine, extending the concept of Sherrington, and new trends in this field. The book will appeal to scientists and graduate students.Customer Reviews:
