Take it from me, this is the best book.......2006-02-22
All the dueling reviews below would have you wonder about the quality of both "Divorce and Money" books, so as an experiment I got both. It's pretty clear that this book (Nolo's) is the better one, hands down. The difference was evident in just minutes. Everything's presented in easy to read verbiage, the charts are easy to use, and the forms and checklists were really handy. Helped me and my ex make the split easier than I expected, frankly. Thank you for this book!!
My new favorite book!.......2004-07-13
Okay I might be exagerating but I did love this book. A friend recommended it after my husband and I decide to "part ways." I accidently picked up the other book with the same title and was not so thrilled with all the Get A Attorney advice, but then I realized my mistake and got this version -- it's SO helpful. It almost took me by the hand and showed me how to be less emotional than I would be when making decisions affecting how to split our property and bills up, and how to figure out child support.

Read both books and all the reviews of 2 books with basically the same name and if you want more information in a MUCH MORE user friendly, readable (in English) format at 1/2 the price buy the other book by Smith, Divorce and Money Everything you need to know. I read a review that the Smith book just wants you to hire expensive lawyers. NOTHING could be further from the truth. No matter what, you need a lawyer and this book tells you the same thing. It doesn't mean you have to be stupid! As a normal, middle class guy with a college education and MY OWN BUSINESS this book makes you feel like you are in Latin Class again. Do your self a favor and not only buy Smith's book on Money get her book on Children.......you will save lots of time and stress.
For my money, a better bet is............2004-03-03
....a newer book, "Divorce and Money: Eveything you need to Know," by attorney Gayle Rosenwald Smith. The newer book even has its own website, www.divorceandmoneybook.com, which allowed me to peruse the contents, view a video clip of the author on CBS, and check her calendar to see if she would be appearing at a book store near me. Well she was, and I got to talk to her in person, which was great! She's so knowledgeable and empathetic; her very human tone comes through in every page of her book. Gayle's book lists at $14.95 (but I got it for less!) vs. $24.50 for the other book. At a time like this, I need to hang onto every penny I've got. I'm really glad I bought Gayle's book, the information was up-to-date, thorough and invaluable. Why pay almost $10 more for an older book?
The best book available.......2004-01-30
Recently saw another book with this same title at the bookstore, so I picked up both. Of the two, the Nolo book was so much more helpful -- it assumes you want to handle most of the details yourself, and avoid lawyers, whereas the other kept talking about how to choose a lawyer (an expensive, time-wasting lawyer).

This book is just as entertaining as the original. I was chortling, giggling and guffawing my way through the book. It's like peanuts... as soon as you are done, you want more!
Otto, the Game's Afoot!.......2007-09-18
This is the second book in the series. I started with the first, Holmes on the Range (Holmes on the Range Mysteries)and recommend that you do too. While it works fine to start with this one, if you take them in order you will get the "origin" story straight, and there are a few allusions in the second book that will make more sense. Since after you read one you will surely want to read the other, you might as well take them in order.
I'm a Sherlock Holmes fan, if not a fanatic, and immediately fell in love with the premise of this series---a cowboy in the Old West reads about Sherlock Holmes and aspires to be like him. The Old West provides a fresh and fertile landscape as the setting for a Holmes style mystery. And the combination of these two great myths and genres holds obvious promise. An inspired choice. The author executes this concept with worthy aplomb and by this second book the characters are our endearing old friends.
After all, the joy of being a Holmes fan is only partly in the patented Holmes deductions, and only partly (and even less) in the mysteries themselves. The great joy comes in the characters, whose foibles become as familiar and comfortable to the reader as Holmes' slippers and pipe became to the Great Detective. And just so with Holmes' many successful descendants such as Hercule Poirot and Nero Wolfe.
The heroes in this series hew closer to the Holmes model than Poirot and Wolfe, but are admirably colorful and likeable in their own right. "Big Red," who assumes Watson's narrator role, is more of an independant character than Watson, and he spins out the yarn with steady doses of both suspense and humor. You'll keeping turning the pages eagerly with a broad grin on your face.
If anything, this second book slightly surpasses the first---introducing some more interesting secondary characters. My 12-year old son and I eagerly await number three.
Pleasing and entertaining.......2007-07-18
This is a well executed pastiche (sort of) of the Holmes character and Doc Watson.
But, it is more, in the sense that a work of this type cannot be just a mere duplication of Art Doyle's original if it is to stand a chance to be entertaining. No, instead, Hockensmith adopts a comedic element that Doyle's work lacked, but is used to good effect here.
Very entertaining.
A bit less Holmesian than the first but just as fun.......2007-06-30
Here is yet another adventure of Gustav and Otto, the Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson of the Old West.
This one isn't quite as good as Hockensmith's first effort - I guess a little bit of the novelty has worn off, and frankly there are a few less Holmesian elements in the story. But overall this is still a fun read (or listen, in my case, since my review is based on the audiobook).
And the possibility of a life's companion for Otto was very intriguing. Diana sounds like a cross between Watson's wife Mary and Irene Adler - I hope more of the former, since the real Ms Adler was one of Holmes' most worthy adversaries.
I also have to put in a good word for the reader of this audiobook. He certainly knows his craft. I don't know if he also did "Holmes on the Range" but if Hockensmith puts out another sequel (which seems likely) I hope he reads that one as well.
WAITING FOR #3.......2007-06-27
Hockensmith's sequel is as funny and inventive as his historically accurate original was, may the brothers Gustav and Otto ride many a happy trail together. The book the was like a Saturday morning matinee for grown ups, in fact, thinking in terms of casting, picture a young Robert Duvall as "Sherlock" and for "Big Red" an also young Michael Caine with a plausible western drawl. Will be waitin' at the "Longbranch" for No.3 to arrive!

And I Don't Even Like The Old West!.......2007-09-15
What drew me to Steve Hockensmith's books was not the lure of a good western with a humorous flavor and a sprinkling of mystery. I'm not a big reader of westerns. Yet, when I stumbled across Hockensmith's hilarious blog, I had to pick up his books. It was a moral imperative.
I cannot tell you how quickly Big Red and Old Red yanked me in and wouldn't let me go. It dropped me into the old west with all its cow pokie glory and then held me there in fascination. The characters are unique and Hockensmith's depiction of them made it easy for me to picture them in my mind.
I burned through this book in a day because I couldn't put it down. Even if you're not a fan of westerns or historicals, you might find this an entertaining book to read.
I highly recommend this book. I'm already two chapters into his next one "On The Wrong Track" and I love it.
If you're not sure you want to dip your toes into a new author, check out his blog and get a feel for his character. His books are very similar, if not better.

Mixing my two favorite subjects: Sherlock Holmes & the wild west!.......2007-06-18
You can get the description from the book info section, all I want to say is that I found the book to be delightful. Of course I have a love of both Sherlock Holmes and the old west so this was a natural for me. Thankfully the book did not let me down with some excellent characterization for Big Red and Old Red, you will really grow to like them by the time the book is done. I am looking forward to more books staring these unlikely heroes.
A Sure Bet for Fans of Both Mystery and Western Books.......2007-05-24
A while back, I received an email from Mr. Hockensmith who informed me that he was "kind of a western writer" and would I be interested in taking a look at his book, HOLMES ON THE RANGE. The title was enough to catch my interest, so I told him to send it along. Now, I wish I'd asked for his second book while I was at it.
HOLMES ON THE RANGE received rave reviews from Publisher's Weekly (starred), Booklist (starred), the Boston Globe, Forbes, and Entertainment Weekly. On reading it, it's easy to discover why. In this western mystery, Hockensmith does everything right.

Okay, now here's the interesting thing. This book was published and marketed as a mystery. And it is a mystery. It's also a western and a damned fine one. All the elements are there, and Hockensmith doesn't stint on period details that show he actually knows what constitutes a western. This novel is a fantastic example of precisely how western writers today can rebuild their market space.
The story itself is funny at times, hilarious at others, and the ranch, the hands and the working life of a cowpuncher described with great flair and accuracy. Overlooked as a western novel, but praised as a mystery, HOLMES ON THE RANGE delivers the goods on both genres with wit, charm and excellent writing. That said, there are also plenty of times where the storyline is serious and the scenes intense.
If you like good stories - western, mystery and/or both - get out and pick up a copy of this book. You absolutely won't be disappointed.
