Entering the perennial debate about the role and definition of law, Raymond Belliotti presents a critical survey of a number of philosophical approaches to law and judicial decision-making. Confronting the conflicting orientations represented by legal formalism and legal realism, he discusses the relationship between law and society. For a decision such as Roe v. Wade, the differing justifications by formalists and realists can affect policy interpretations as well as legal challenges. The application of an implicit right to privacy versus the attempt to enact policy that deals with a social problem and the acceptance of judicial innovation demonstrates how sometimes opposing arguments can reach the same legal decision. While providing his own account of law, Belliotti takes seriously the legal critiques inspired by Marxism and feminism and illustrates how traditional philosophical problems and methods plague legal theory. He also shows the impasses to which our argumentation strategies lead and suggests ways we might transcend those dead ends.

Realization that continental records of Quaternary rocks were more complex than hitherto believed came with the re-interpretation of oxygen isotope stratigraphy in the late 1960s and early 1970s. This necessitated a comprehensive re-evaluation that has been assisted by the emergence of new geochronological methods for terrestrial as well as land-sea correlations. The current state of such correlations is presented in this revised set of proposals for correlations in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, which also includes the Quaternary geology of the continental shelf.Correlation with the global standard of oxygen isotope stratigraphy enables the significance of British lithostratigraphical units to be appreciated in a wider context that includes the evolution of the climate system on a margin of the northeast Atlantic Ocean. It thus provides timely British data for the international palaeoceanographical and palaeoclimatological community and the correlations proposed are primarily on Milankovitch timescales. But their appearance coincides with the early stages of a paradigm shift to the search for both terrestrial and land-sea correlation on millennial timescales and then on centennial and decadal ones. This is the first of many similar terrestrial and land-sea correlations.

This book is too negative. I enjoyed it at first and then it got to be too much! Would prefer a balance between put-downs, cleverness and self-deprecating humour. This book was mostly put-downs. Recommend books on Dorothy Parker with her clever witticisms to those such as this one.

The best of the negative voices.......2000-01-26

In this small book, you'll find just about every negative quote about any celebrity. For that matter, many quotes put down entire groups of people in one or two short sentances. You won't find the quotes that appear in the daily cryptoquote, but you'll find interesting stuff. The most unflattering thing I can say is that this book is tremendously negative. If your read it for awhile, you'll laugh, but you'll begin to wonder if any celebrities like anything.

I giggled for HOURS over this book. This is the ultimate collection of quotes. A must have. Perfect when trying to find just the right line that fits for an upcoming speech or when trying to give life to those staid management reports. Highly recommended!
