    Book Description

This book has two significant advantages relative to other books and software on the topic of valuation. First, the expository approach of the authors is very user-friendly, with a pedagogy designed to build confidence. They begin with a very simple, but complete example in the first couple of chapters that takes the reader through the valuation of a company. They repeat the analysis for a slightly more complicated company in chapters 3-4. A repeat of the analysis is then completed in chapters 5-8 for an even more complicated company. This iterative approach allows the reader to absorb “digestible” amounts of material before moving on to the next level of complication. The second pedagogic advantage is the structure of their spreadsheet valuation model. They show the reader how to get real world data, and how to cut-and-paste it into their spreadsheet. The spreadsheet simplifies the complex accounting found in most actual companies' financial statements and condenses it into a simplified set of standardized financial statements. This allows the user to concentrate on the fundamental economic forces that underlie a company's value.

[Journal of Accounting and Economics 33 (2) (2002) 173-204], we show that managers in strong-investor-protection countries are more likely to utilize forecast guidance to avoid negative earnings surprises than managers in weak-investor-protection countries. From the supplier: Foreign property owners can qualify for an exemption from a 30% withholding tax by paying a fair share of income tax on a net basis after deductions. The 30% withholding tax is computed on the gross amount of the rents produced by the property without allowable deductions for interest, depreciation, management, repairs and association fees. Foreign persons can realize the exemption by qualifying the real estate operations as 'engaged in a US trade or business.' They can also avoid potential liabilities by familiarizing themselves with IRS certification forms that are received by the client before any rental income from the property. Foreign property owners can also avoid future liabilities by assuming that their property manager is their withholding agent.

                        Book Description

Previously, there a been a distinct lack of literature on the economic geography of the world's financial centers. This book is set to remedy that gap.

Financial Geography is the only geographical reader explaining the intricacies of high finance from a global perspective in the 1990s. It is a comprehensive presentation of institutional backgrounds, markets, products, actors and locations, a non-technical primer for future bankers and financial analysts, and a keystone in the basic education of future executives.

This truly internationally focused book is as enjoyable as is it informative. All students and academics involved with economic geography as well as professionals in the banking and finance industries will find this text to be an indispensible book for their bookshelves.

crystals of different colors, obtaining most of my materials from local sources and my chemistry teacher. My experiments were performed in a depression under our house ... with a dirt floor. this was my "chemistry laboratory." The evaporation method produced cloudy crystals, so I reverted to the supersaturated technique to produce perfect specimens. My heating mantle consisted of a coffee can with a hole cut in it to insert a light bulb. This worked very well. Over the years I have frequently referred to this book and recommended it to others. I still do so. It is worth its weight in gold.

                              4 out of 5 stars It's a keeper!.......1999-08-12

I've had this book for well over 20 years, and every couple of years I get it back out, re-read it and try a few new experiments. This book would be good for a child (with supervision) who is interested in cause-and-effects relations of science. Some simple crystal experiments may be carried out in hours, some take longer.

Even an old engineer still enjoys this book!

I used this book with a second grader. She had no difficulty understanding the text and memorizing key concepts. I followed up by having us grow crystals. It was a memorable experience for her and a great introduction to scientific concepts at a young age.

                                                Book Description

Contourites are a widespread but poorly known group of sediments linked to the action of powerful bottom currents in deep water. Although we know they are especially common along continental margins and through oceanic gateways, they have been surrounded by the controversy since they were first recognized in the early 1960s. Where correctly recognized and decoded they can provide one of the keys to our better understanding of bottom water circulation and of the ocean-climate link. They are part of the spectrum of deposits that confronts the oil industry as exploration moves into progressively greater water depths.

This memoir is an important outcome of the International Geological Correlation Project 432 on Bottom Currents, Contourites and Paleocirculation. It includes 30 papers involving over 75 key scientists from around the world. Following an introductory state-of-the-art paper by the editors, there are 25 separate case studies on modern drifts and four on ancient contourite series. This volume is dedicated to the memory of Charlie Hollister (1936-1999), one of the founding fathers and pioneers of contourite research.

Everything about How to Cook a Tart, the debut novel from Washington Post food writer Nina Killham, is too much. Its heroine, cookbook author Jasmine March, is a rotund creation, a lover of cream and butter and pork and all manner of excess. Food governs her. She's given to ruminations along these lines: "of all the herbs, Jasmine thought, basil was her soul mate. Basil was sensuous, liking to stretch out green and silky under a hot sun with its feet covered in cool soil." Her husband Daniel is having an affair with a woman of the opposite extreme: an actress named Tina who's a skinny-limbed disciple of the Zone diet. Jasmine's daughter Careme is--what else?--an anorexic. Killham pushes these characters off the precipice of probability when Tina is found dead in Jasmine's kitchen, a brownie stuffed in her mouth. This could be a rich comic stew, but though Killham has a firm grasp of cookery, she has poor control over her tone. We're never sure if what we're reading is satire or romance or grotesquerie. It doesn't help that she lifts her conclusion from Roald Dahl. Still, foodie fans of Bon Appétit-style purple prose will find much to admire in the descriptions of Jasmine's kitchen adventures. --Claire Dederer

                                                  Book Description

Cookbook author Jasmine March's life is like a perfectly prepared béchamel-rich, satisfying, and drenched in butter. But even a great béchamel curdles sometimes. Her husband, Daniel, has taken up with one of his Zone-dieting drama students; Careme, her daughter, is bent on starving herself to death; and Jasmine's fellow foodies have had just about enough of her astronomically caloric recipes. To make matters worse, her publisher is threatening to cancel her contract. And then there's the small matter of the dead body she finds one morning on her kitchen floor.

Filled with mouth-watering descriptions of Jasmine's creations-venison stew with Madeira and juniper berries, crispy chicken breasts stuffed with goat cheese and mint-Nina Killham's smart and spirited first novel is good enough to eat.

4 out of 5 stars Good book, surprise ending.......2007-08-07

I thought this was a well written book and the description of the food was to die for. It would have been a surprise ending, but by reading reviews on this website I prematurely learned what would happen. I recommend that you DO NOT look at older reviews before reading unless you want spoilers, which I didn't.

                                                  5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-06-29

Boy, am I glad that this book caught my eye at the bookstore. I really loved the ending, unlike some reviewers, and very much enjoyed the descriptions of the marriage, the family unit, and of course the food. Unlike any other book I've read before, I have a strong desire to reread it right now.

4 out of 5 stars You'll want to eat your way through most of this book.......2007-06-02

This is one of the strangest and one of the most oddly entertaining books I have read. I like reading books that are inspired by food (or are food-centric) and this book is no exception. Far from being a murder mystery, Killham's book lampoons every single aspect of the relationship people have with food...from the gourmands, to the dieters, those with eating disorders, those who overeat, those who write about food. Killham knows how to describe food in such a way that you just want to eat everything you have in your kitchen. The ending is one of those that simultaneously horrified and fascinated me, and while I was shocked by the ending, it is certainly a fitting one. This book is definetely more satirical in tone, though everything, except the very last meal and some of the health nut diets sounded pretty delicious. I'm giving this four stars, because while I think the ending fits the satirical tone of this book, it felt a little bit rushed and contrived at times, compared to other passages and sections in the book.

                                                  5 out of 5 stars A Delicious Read.......2006-12-03

Reading this book on an empty stomach was such a bad idea. I was craving every gourmet dish the author was describing in luscious detail. The first few chapters passed quickly, I was too busy relishing the tastes and textures. But before I knew it, I actually got sucked into the plot: Jasmine, a zaftig cookbook author whose hubby had a affair with a Zone diet-obsessed actress, found the girl dead on her kitchen floor. For the first half of the book though, we're immersed in a sharp satire of everyone in Jasmine's life, be it her detoxing husband, her anorexic daughter, her dieting-and-failing neighbor, assorted neurotic cookbook writers, and other self-absorbed characters who are defined by food in some way or other. You won't want the murder mystery to be solved, for that would mean an end to the fun fly-on-the-wall trip through foodie land.

                                                  3 out of 5 stars Saucy.......2006-09-12

This book got off to a strong start and was definitely believable. In the beginning, I found it to be witty, funny and well written. For an epicure, the descriptions of dishes prepared by the main character were tantalizing; but alas, something happened about 80% of the way through the book - it took a crazy and unbelievable turn for the worst. It was almost as if another writer stepped in to finish off the job. I would still recommend it as a light vacation read....but I was disappointed in the ending.
