Excellent Book.......2002-07-18
As an Information Technology consultant working w/health care professionals, I needed a standard reference to better understand my clients' needs.
I was working on my Masters of Accountancy after finishing my MBA, and I was lucky enough to find a Health Care Accounting course which used this text book.
I cannot recommend the book highly enough. If you take the time to read the different sections of the book, and read the (copious) scenario problems at the end of the section where the lessons are applied, you will acquire a much richer understanding of the accounting dynamics in health care.
Excellent primer for Health Care number crunchers.......1999-04-16
I work in a health care administration postion and found the book to be very useful for refreshing me on basic accounting concepts as well as covering more complex topics of health care finance and cost accounting. I would highly recommend this book as a reference for health care institutions (especially hospitals) for orientation and as a way to educate their managers. The real-life examples and problems are invaluable for explaining the topics covered in each chapter.
Need some books about hospital accounting.......1999-03-17
I will teach some concept about hospital accountiny at the Nursey School in my University, I think this book could help me to improve my knowledge about thgis topic. I

Great book, underrated series.......2004-03-22
To bluefox2003:
A lot of students, myself included, find the Barron's a bit too technical and dry. I went to the bookstore and saw 5 Steps to a 5, not expecting much, but it turned out to be, for me at least, the most clear, concise, interesting, yet still complete and full review of AP Chem. It reads like a friend explaining the ideas to you. Not a dumb friend, either, but one who is interested in AP Chem, talking to someone who is interested in AP Chem. If you think that the problems are too easy, it might be because they are, in fact, supposed to be that easy when they are explained well. Just my two cents.
stop lying..........2004-02-01
It's useless... I bought one last month and started to use it for preparing the AP Exam... but it's useless... the tricks are "common sense" and the practice problems are too easy... if you really wanna buy a good review book... use Barron or Princeton Review...
This book is great and my high school students love it........2004-01-28
The type in the book is easy to read and the examples are easy to follow. A couple of my students started using it last week and they say it explains things better than their textbook does.

Book Description
The coexistence in space and time of growing mountain belts and actively extending basins poses a number of yet unsolved questions in terms of mechanics. This problem is particularly crucial in the Mediterranean regions, where all Cenozoic basins opened in the internal zones of mountain belts. The Tyrrhenian Sea opened in the back-arc region of the Apennines, the Aegean Sea in the back-arc domain of the Hellenides and Hellenic arc, the Pannonian Basin behind the Carpathians and the Alboran Sea between the Betics and the Rif. In some examples such as the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Aegean Sea, extension is ongoing while peripheral compression and convergence are active. The Alboran Sea and Pannonian Basin are now in a compression stage.Several models have been proposed to explain this coexistence of compression and extension: slab retreat during subduction process, detachments of a deep lithospheric root under the internal zones leading to radial extension and peripheral compression and slab detachments. This volume brings together contributions from geologists and geophysicists in the quest to solve the complex dynamic problem posed by the Mediterranean region. It presents a wealth of new data on various topics centred on the Mediterranean region from the deep mantle structure to the detailed geometry of sedimentary basins. This book results for the Integrated Basins Studies Project, which was funded by the European Commission and which involved the collaboration of over 200 researchers across Europe. A sister volume has been published - Cenozoic Foreland Basins of Western Europe. Geological Society Special Publication no. 134.

Almost Prophetic..........2006-06-09
The author was once an assistant District Attorney in New York, thus he knows from whence this story unfolds. Previous to this novel, he produced true-crime books, 'The Piano Teacher' and 'Badge of the Assassin,' with a little help from 'friends.' The premise of the terrorist act is almost what really happened ten years later!
This novel filled with profanities and descriptive monikers I don't care to read is praised as "a damning incident of our court system." I have to be real upset to say 'damn' but I wrote it several times recently. Some 'crimes' are never reported to the D. A.'s office as they are (intentionally or otherwise) crimes of the heart. Emotional abuse is as bad as physical abuse. I thank God I had the ability to use verbal spontenanity with which to carry my end in an abusive situation. I had a good teacher for twenty-one years.
It's strange that he had to move to Beverly Hills, CA, where the beautiful people live to write about the ugly vermin in New York. Perhaps he was dismissed under false circumstances, and this is his way to retaliate toward the court system. I've been in a position where I, too, used a bit of leverage being tiny in size but larger than life in determination to call a spade-a-spade with Randy Nichols! I yelled at him and he yelled back. No sex and violence were involved; to be upfront, it was a threat to throw me in a lake which, to me, was pre-meditated murder. He didn't see it that way. Men never do. That is precisely why women get killed by men they're not involved with -- happens here a lot. No order of protection (only a piece of paper) as it was not a domestic issue.
This book proves that justice is blind. I was once told by a Chief of Police that there is no justice. Money speaks louder than words -- or a woman's rights being abused. Trials are only a stage where lawyers can become actors and the judge pretends to be God. The judicial system today is way out of orbit, and murderers are allowed back 'on the street' to kill again.
This trial is about early terrorism in New York prior to 9-11-01. The Catholic Church enters into the sordid business on the side of the guilty parties. We all know that they worship Mary and not God. In 'The Da Vinci Code' movie, they even tried to prove that God is a woman. Lord, help us! Butch is driven to probe the darkest depths of human depravity of Croatia as he follows 'a tristed trail of evil' in this fictional portrait of justice gone bad.
Tenenbaum has also written ABSOLUTE RAGE, HOAX and FURY among many other novels about crime.
poor addition to the Karp series.......2004-08-14
Ohhh the pain of reading such poor prose wrapped up in the guise of a second rate novel by yet another lawyer who thinks he is a writer. I am not a writer myself and don't think that I could do much better. But Tanenbaum is massacring a fine series with this drivel. For some reason that I can't remember anymore, I enjoyed picking up a couple of the books in this "Karp" series a couple of years before. Now that I am picking up the one or two loose books that I missed the first time through, I find myself often gazing off into the nothingness before me in horror. I think to myself, how could I have enjoyed these books the first time around? Well. This review might piss you off, but I am being honest when I say, stay away from this book. It's implausible, and stale, as if Tanenbaum is going through the motions as he gets another chapter in his moneymaking machine out to the public. This is like the Hardy Boys for adults, or high school age children still fed with the pap of TV plots and Hollywood films. You can see the plot to this book on other reviews here; it's just not as good as other people say it is.
Try Hillerman or Block for consistent good books in a mystery series, or `Becker's Ring,' by Steven Martin Cohen for a good mystery read. On the more adult side try Quincunx by Palliser or `Wind Up Bird Chronicle' by Murakami. Try Hammett, Chandler, Jim Harrison, or Edward Bunkers Dog Eat Dog. Just pause before you read this book.
2nd in the series, was he just warming up?.......2004-08-13
This was the 5th book I have read of the series. I am hooked on his books, but this one didn't hold my attention as well as the others. I think it was just to in depth with the CIA, FBI, Croats, ect. Still a good read, but not the best. I strongly urge people to read them all though. Just be sure to start at the begining with No Lesser Plea and work your way to Hoax. Following the Karp family from the start makes for a better read.
Kind of Muddled..........2004-04-18
This is my third Butch Karp novel - and I really like the series. However, I think this one was my least favorite. There are way too many characters (CIA, FBI, NYPD, The Catholic Church, the Mossad, Croats, Serbs, Nazis... get my point?) Also there were many plot points that are left undone. What happened to Leventhal? Why did Karavitch set the bomb or hijack the plane?
It just felt kind of unfocused. I won't give up on Tanenbaum yet, though. I'll definitely read a few more, and hope that he can redeem himself.
This series just gets better........1999-08-06
Each and every book Tanenbaum is always on target! 5 stars are always the best rave and review I always can give them. What a joy to read.
Book Description
Gary Indiana, a 'huge satirical talent' (The New York Times), presents a darkly comic novel fueled by the virtuoso con artist Evangeline Slote and her extravagant life of chicanery and petty crime. Inspired by the case of Sante and Ken Kimes, the real-life mother/son grifters, the novel is a dissection of the mind of a charismatic sociopath and a satire of the society that appeases and abets her.
Customer Reviews:
Do you want to meet these people?.......2005-01-27
Depraved Indifference by Gary Indiana
Even by his name you know the author will be a clever boy.
Ten pages into Depraved Indifference it is difficult to see why to read a novel about a chaotic, scheming, abusive, rich Elizabeth Taylor lookalike who was found guilty on charges of enslaving her household staff. Plus she is supposedly based on a real life person. Yech. The other main characters, one a drunk, gloating California businessman and the other, a delusions-of-grandeur mama's boy, offered even less enticement.
It is easy to track the main characters that change their names frequently. Tracking secondary characters requires concentration.
Indiana's vocabulary seems like he played a little game of including Dictionary.com's word of the day every day.
Then why read this? For a change of pace. Indiana is a hip NYer so reading his fiction is a vicarious piece of hip. When you live in the desert how else would you have contact with hip? Because the NYers have second homes here? Not the ones I want to read about. Since one only occasionally recognizes karmic returns in real life why not settle for the clarity of fiction? Read it to find out that the lead thief is ashamed of her indifference to humankind? Okay, that's not a reason to read it.
There is incest, child abuse, and infidelity included in a whole range of misbehavior. It doesn't seem funny when some old hag usurps her son's budding sexuality or when the only person she can express love and tenderness to is the most victimized kid on the planet. Some people probably think it's a hoot though.
The reason I checked out Indiana's fiction was a 2004 New York Magazine article about East Village artists. Since Indiana professes to have been in love with Cookie Mueller maybe he will utilize her positive outlook amidst seemingly negative circumstance. I liked his Village Voice Susan Sontag eulogy too. For a hip guy who you would assume would excel at viciousness he is the most charming when he writes about who and what he knows and loves.
By page 200 I am still wondering why I am supposed to want to read about snakepit people. At least he doesn't love them. I double-check money accounts to make sure my puny assets are still intact. Is this some cautionary tale of how and where identity thieves operate? Do those-in-the-know chortle, recognizing the real life people these characters are modeled on? Is it a modern Dickens story, bringing characters from the beginning back into the plot? Where is the sympathetic character navigating the Dickensian twists?
Towards end when you think things should be wrapping up the author is still bringing in new characters.
When the main characters finally try New York (why not New York? They wore out their welcome everywhere else) the locals recognize them as obvious cons. There's an idea: Herd these people to New York where the game is over.
Indiana resists torquing his plot into a potential Hollywood hit with some investigator helping the feisty daughter-from-the-previous-marriage con the cons and walk off with all the loot. It would have been a logical conclusion since the conneds' names and social security numbers are on the documents.
I wouldn't recommend the book to my next door neighbor who has been battling identity theft for a few years. It is too irrelevant to what his experience has been (including his own minor cons) and too indifferent.
The subject matter is timely. Lots of people are willing to maneuver numbers in illegal ways (steal) rather than work for a living.
The thieves are creative and active in their approach to survival. Financially, they thrive. When you are a working stiff theft seems wrong but admirable. Living outside the rules seems disorderly but more alive. Immorality doesn't impair ones ability to sleep at night. Being victimized impairs your ability to sleep. It seems funny when the dog or the magpies steal. Still, it would have been all right to never read about the characters in this book.
You could say it didn't cost anything to read this novel but aside from the cost of the book it cost me one day skiing.
Compelling, yet Flawed.......2002-05-08
The idea of writing a fictionalized account of the Santee Kimes case is a good one. As is often mentioned, truth is stranger than fiction and sometimes more interesting too. That's especially true of a case so depraved and evil as this one. In fact, I would worry if someone could make up what happened in this case without knowing the previous facts.
Gary Indiana is a very talented writer and communicator and he proves it through much of this book. The problem is that he isn't always that consistent. There were times when I marvelled at how vividly he described a character or a scene. There were times when I couldn't put the book down because the action of what was being told was so compelling.
Unfortunately there were also a number of times when I had to put the book down and re-read passages to figure out where I was in the story. I know some of the is done for effect and is part of his style, but there are times when I think that he needs to pay a little more attention to the actual craft and discipline of being a writer. While Indiana is describing events that are hard to reconstruct and retell and that he does so in different voice, he could have made it easier to read at times.
With that criticism, I still might seek out the other two books of this trilogy. Depraved Indifference can not be considered as high-minded literature; in fact, it's about as lurid of a book you'll ever find. Still, I'm drawn to it and think Indiana demonstrates unique talent.
In summary, I guess I would recommend the book with my qualifications and look forward to new work in the future.
The real "Mickey Landry" speaks.......2002-04-09
I was the model for Mickey Landry in Indiana's latest faction. Having actually been on the Kimes case before Kimes became chic, I must say that the satirical portrayal of this deadly mother son team, does nothing but trivialize their crimes. I would rather see thought provoking exploration into how the mind of a female predator works. What makes Sante Kimes tick? What could have possibly happened to her to create such a monster. She is not a comic character, or some sort of twisted folk hero. She is truly evil. The style of Indiana's writing is not what bothered me, rather it was the flippant treatment of quiet, seething and pathological evil which is glorified and its victims satirized.
deal with it..........2002-03-23
the darkest sides of human nature are not always easy to look at - but there is a value in doing so. and there is a value to those storytellers amongst us who can live inside the heads of characters as venal, narcissistic and evil as these.
i loved Indiana's writing. his descriptions of, say, the industrial wastelands of newark, new jersey are downright beautiful, and surprising, drawing parallels between the characters in the novel and the environments they find themselves, and besides I like a good run on sentence since I'm not the sort of person who believes in strict formulas or is immune to the charms of an idiosyncratic intellect suffused with style exercising little restraint in turning a phrase.
not a book for everyone, but I for one will be seeking out and reading other works from Indiana.
Challenging, shocking; not for everyone.......2002-03-21
Pay no attention to those who gleefuly eviscerated this book - it's a triumph of wit, style and narrative structure. Indiana takes a tabloidy crime story worthy of a Lifetime movie (this one actually was) and gives it layers and layers of style and nuance. It's like R. Crumb re-writing a story from the National Enquirer: darkly comic, elaborately imagined, terrifying. It hardly skims over incest - Indiana brings both mother and son to excruciatingly detailed inner life. The novel is a risk-taker in both prose and ideas, and it's not entirely successful, but its characters, images and whacked-out turns of phrase sting and linger.
