5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive.......2006-05-12

This is a fantastic resource for accountants entering into not-for-profit organizations for the first time or to review further for accountants wanting more clarity in their current management positions. This book covers everything and has excellent sections on accounting and reporting guidelines for the many entity types of not-for-profit organizations. Also has a chapter covering entities on public not-for-profit (GASB). This book truly is worth keeping in the office as a valuable resource.

4 out of 5 stars midnight accounting help.......1999-12-07

Sometimes you may be serving on the board of a nonprofit group and discover that your funder requires GAAP. Well what is that. This book will help you understand the nonprofit world of accounting. This work has been a resource that I have turned to at midnight myself aand have recommended many times. At times it is a little technical. But it helps to use some "accounting" language in the next board or committee meeting that you will be discussing budgets or finalcial presentatons.

Also, I have used this as a guideline when I consulted a small group that needed help with internal controls.

4 out of 5 stars This book is very valuable for Not-For-Profit Organizations.......1999-10-18

I felt this book was basically well written. It at times is a little too technical, but basically is easy to follow. I do find it an invaluable tool for reference information in the not-for-profit industry.

4 out of 5 stars It is helpful to me........1999-05-25

It was lucky to find this book. I'm a college student. I am preparing to take a AICPA exam. The library of my college doesn't have enough books about Not-for-Profit Organization accounting. This book gives me friendly and detailed explanations. well, a shortness of this book is a tedious text, such as one color text, no graphic figures. I just worried about objective judgements, because I didn't study other Not-fot-Profit books. Anyway, this book makes me come to Not-for-Profit accounting more closely. I'd like to recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Good resource tool........2000-06-29

This book is packed with quick and helpful information for a non-profit organization. It appears to be written at a level that most accounting people can easily understand, but it maybe difficult for the average lay person. The Appendix provide useful information in a check list format, but is hard to read due to the small size and angle of the inserts.

I liked this book because it had more and better examples than the competition such as Lambers Review Course. It will not repeat practice excersices. It has pointers and tips on how to build knowledge in a logical and reinforcing way. The first time I took the exam I paid $1000 for a Lambers Review and I did not pass any part of the test. The second time, using Wileys Review books ( $129.99 approx.)I passed two parts.

In 1856, while trying to synthesize artificial quinine, 18-year-old chemistry student William Perkin instead produced a murky residue. Fifty years later, he described the event: he "was about to throw a certain residue away when I thought it might be interesting. The solution of it resulted in a strangely beautiful color." Perkin had stumbled across the world's first aniline dye, a color that became known as mauve.

"So what?" you might say. "A teenager invented a new color." As Simon Garfield admirably points out in Mauve, the color really did change the world. Before Perkin's discovery all the dyes and paints were colored by roots, leaves, insects, or, in the case of purple, mollusks. As a result, colors were inconsistent and unpredictably strong, often fading or washing out. Perkin found a dye that would always produce a uniform shade--and he pointed the way to other synthetic colors, thus revolutionizing the world of both dyemaking and fashion. Mauve became all the rage. Queen Victoria wore it to her daughter's wedding in 1858, and the highly influential Empress Eugénie decided the color matched her eyes. Soon, the streets of London erupted in what one wag called the "mauve measles."

Mauve had a much wider impact as well. By finding a commercial use for his discovery--much to the dismay of his teacher, the great August Hofmann, who believed there needed to be a separation between "pure" and "applied" science--Perkin inspired others to follow in his footsteps: "Ten years after Perkin's discovery of mauve, organic chemistry was perceived as being exciting, profitable, and of great practical use." The influx of bright young men all hoping to earn their fortunes through industrial applications of chemistry later brought significant advances in the fields of medicine, perfume, photography, and even explosives. Through it all, Garfield tells his story in clever, witty prose, turning this odd little tale into a very entertaining read. --Sunny Delaney

                      Book Description

In 1856 eighteen-year-old English chemist William Perkin accidentally discovered a way to mass-produce color. In a "witty, erudite, and entertaining" (Esquire) style, Simon Garfield explains how the experimental mishap that produced an odd shade of purple revolutionized fashion, as well as industrial applications of chemistry research. Occasionally honored in certain colleges and chemistry clubs, Perkin until now has been a forgotten man. 8 pages of color illustrations.

3 out of 5 stars Jumpy and lacking in chemical "substance".......2006-08-19

I found this book often interesting and often confusing. People entered and exited frequently, and the insertion of some modern information about color broke the continuity of the author's message. I wished for more descriptions of the chemistry involved, what the various chemical reactions did, and how other chemists adapted Perkin's synthetic route to create new dyes. But the most descriptive information comes from Perkin's patent application, which sounds so general as to provide little useful information. So, this book gets three stars because it provided an easy summer read, but it lacked in scientific substance.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as the title promised........2004-09-21

It could have been a great book. I'm always looking for good books about chemistry and chemists so I had high hopes for this one. The story of William Perkin discovering mauve as an 18-year-old student and then starting the synthetic dye industry in Britain is inspirational for chemistry students everywhere. However, the author races through the biography of Perkin in the first half of the book, barely hinting at his family or other aspects of the young man's life and personality. The second half of the book is all jumbled together: Perkin, fashion, natural dyes, World War II, malaria, etc. The author attempts to show that many different fields were affected by the synthesis of mauve from coal tar, but he really doesn't make a clear case for any of them, and the reader is left with a pile of disjointed factoids and unrelated characters. I was disappointed. It is still worth reading, for someone interested in the chemistry of color, but don't expect to be wowed.

                      3 out of 5 stars Okay. But I really didn't get it........2003-07-04

I really wanted to like this book. And, yes, it has a fascinating tale to tell. But there was something lacking in the writing that me entirely unable to 'get' what the writer was trying to say. It IS an interesting story about the origins of dyes, about the effect of dyes on other industries, the industrial surge of technology of the age, and so on. But I couldn't ever quite figure out what made the chemical composition about this particular mauve so unique and important, and what about it was pushing the world into the future. I'm not usually this lost when I read, so, officially, I'm blaming the author! Sorry Simon.

5 out of 5 stars origins of heterocyclic chemistry.......2002-07-23

This is a fantastic accounting of a too little glorified period in the development of organic chemistry. The story will be inspiring to anyone who has an interest in chemistry and/or business. The latter because the story demonstrates the importance of recognizing and capitalizing on an unexpected invention (vs. more target-oriented discovery).

Unlike, most other popular science-related books that this is likely to be lumped with, it is enjoyably written, well researched and full of fascinating facts.

                      4 out of 5 stars Real chemistry.......2002-04-16

This book pushed so many of my buttons -- science history, painting, Victoriania, chains of coincidence and hidden causality -- that I had to love it. Best popular science book I've read in a while.

A diferent kind of reader might have been annoyed at the depth of detail, much of it trivia. I gobbled it up, though.

                            Book Description

During the evening hours of March 13, 1997, thousands of Arizona residents witnessed a mile-long, v-shaped formation of lights flying in the skies overhead. The UFO sightings garnered headline news, catching the attention of both USA Today and the CBS Evening News with Dan Rather. One person, however, was not surprised by the appearance of the lights. Dr. Lynne Kitei was simply grateful that a phenomenon she'd been witnessing--and documenting--for months was being validated by the experience of thousands of people statewide. After the incident, Dr. Kitei preferred to stay in the background, anonymously feeding information and video clips to the many news organizations who wanted in on the story. Now, for the first time, Dr. Kitei comes forward to tell her own story. "The Phoenix Lights" is an exhaustively researched look at the phenomenon, including dozens of astonishing photographs and Kitei's own take on the wider implications of this remarkable event.

Great color photos on www.thephoenixlights.net. But more important than lights in the sky, this painstakingly researched work is a tribute (and consolation) to anyone who has ever experienced something out of the ordinary. I have recommended it to my students and friends since discovering it a couple years ago. Packed with compelling information, this true story is about "seeing the light" and the integrity, persistence and dedication of one human being's search for the truth. An inspiration for us all.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of Time.......2007-09-26

This book is a waste of time. How many times can one say "I saw these lights. What are they?" There are a few pictures showing little bitty lights in the distance sky. You see the lights, but they're are no more than specks. This is really a "nothing-said" book. Save your money.

                            5 out of 5 stars A MUST READ.......2006-02-22

Whether or not you are a believer in life beyond Earth, this book makes a substantial case that we are being visited by other intelligences - one that is a relief and comfort for those of us who have experienced an UP [Unexplained Phenomenon]. The author, who is a noted physician, educator and experiencer, shares her own journey of discovery, while helping the reader discover that we're not alone - and probably never have been. This book is a joy to read, as well as an intriguing guide, particularly for those searching for answers.

While I was searching, I happened on www.thephoenixlights.net and found the color photographs and footage on the site even more compelling than the black and whites illustrated in the book.

But make no mistake, this important story is a must read for young and old alike.

                            5 out of 5 stars Excellent--a recommendation.......2005-10-03

This is a fine book and there's no disputing the sincerity of the author or her commitment to the truth. I suggest, though, that individuals interested in this event(s) also examine other books and look at additional items, like the Peter Jennings special, to get a sense of the odd ebb and flow of information on this subject. That program--the segment on the Phoenix Lights in particular--deserves some analysis; it was structured rather interestingly. Find a sharp friend with experience in advertising, psychology, or marketing to watch it with you.

People clearly saw something unusual that night (and at other times) and it certainly seemed like the unusual phenomenon went out of its way, so to say, to be seen. That may be the most important element--it was designed to be seen and to be discussed. Plenty of people were out comet-watching; an audience was guaranteed. (Curiously, a lot can go on in the sky right over the heads of urban populations and no one will see a thing--few actually look up. I've seen crowds in broad daylight not see the Goodyear Blimp pass right over their heads--if they couldn't hear it--and other things). Strange isolated lights alone will seldom attract the eye but patterns of lights almost always will. That can be done with lights attached to some rigid structure, lights in coordinated and controlled formation, and lights simply dropped in a rough pattern. It would seem that all three phenomenon--all the possible permutations--happened. Hm.

Again, all media information on the Phoenix Lights is useful as it helps to sort the wheat from the chaff. Oh, for the curious I strongly recommend you look at other titles from Hampton Roads Publishing Company that are not obviously flaky and New Age.

[If you ask me, there was nothing ET about anything that happened that night, but a lot of people absolutely did see something huge and extraordinary. Now, what're the biggest danged things that ever sailed the skies?]

5 out of 5 stars Kudos to Dr. Kitei.......2005-09-24

Similar worldwide incidents, interdimensional and time travel, Native American connection, sentient beings billions of years ahead of us...these are but a pin point of the riveting topics Dr. Lynne Kitei touches on in her terrific book.

The Doctor has done an excellent job in putting everything together. She has also done an excellent job of getting the word out, not only in her book, but in a brilliant Documentary as well. Very impressive work.

What is astounding is that she remained quiet for so long. Her tenacity, perseverance and commitment gives one hope that significant information will be forthcoming from others of knowledge and integrity concerning what has, is and will be occurring to our planet in the days to come.

Having lived around the boneyard for a number of years this book helped me remember some of it. My father would and still passes by alot of the airplanes today on his way to work or what ever. It was interesting to read it from an Englishman's point of view.

This is a worthy successor to Philip D. Chinnery's previous pictorial essays on the Boneyard (1987's "Desert Boneyard", and 1989's "Desert Airforce"...both out-of-print). The format is larger, and the quality of the photos is excellent. There's also a tantalizing mix of aircraft...you can hardly wait to turn the page and see what glorious old bird is baking in the hot desert sun on the next page. You really get a feel for the place, and you see more on these pages than you'd ever get to see in real life; mostly because the tours don't take you everywhere Chinnery was able to go. You'll see F-105s, F-102s, F-100s, F-4s, A-7s, F-111s, B-52s, even A-10s, C-141s, F-14s, F-15s and F-16s. Plus other, much older aircraft, helicopters, utility aircraft and aircraft types too numerous to mention. There's a fine section on the early history of the base, and descriptions of the storage process, too. I think you'll like it.

5 out of 5 stars A great coffee table book.......2001-04-17

This book has much detailed information on the history of the storage yard at Davis-Monthan AFB, in Tucson Arizona. Seeing has to how I am an aircraft nut (Mostly military), I got a kick out of the fact that all the pictures were color! And the photos are almost all of aircraft. Rare aircraft included are the XB-19, B-36, RA-5C, C-133 and the NB-52E. The only problem is that just one photo of each of the above aircraft is in the book. In addition, the book also has details about how the aircraft are preserved in storage and what uses they have at the yard. Not all are scrapped or salvaged of parts, but some go on to civilian lives as firebombers or transports and some are sold to warbird collectors. For example, The Pima Air-Space Museum has many aircraft that are on loan from D-M (Then again, it is very near the base). This has to be the best book ever on the place that is mistakenly called "The Boneyard".

This book is a valuable resource for aircraft modelers and aviation enthusiasts. It contains many excellent pictures of aircraft, often in service paint schemes, preserved at Davis-Montham AFB in Tucson, AZ. Each plane is a moment of history frozen in time, poised at the end of a valuable service career but not yet broken up for scrap. Many of the pictures make you sad to think of once-proud aircraft, now cast off unwanted. Although this book does not puport to be anything but a documentation of the career of the Boneyard at Davis-Montham, I would have appreciated more detail on the aircraft themselves. However, I highly recommend this book for modelers as it provides color pictures of many aircraft not often seen in other publications.

                                Book Description

SYNOPSIS Pearl Harbor and the American Spirit is filled with unforgettable interviews that describe the shock, anger, confusion, dislocation, and unwavering American resilience that followed Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The book is perhaps the first to document the broad human experience of December 7, 1941. In this groundbreaking publication, more than 175 people from all across America recall how their lives were suddenly changed forever by Japan's "dastardly attack" in Hawaii.

These fascinating stories take the reader back in time to vintage diners, filling stations, railroad depots, drug stores, family farms, stadiums, churches, barracks, and other places where the alarming news of the ambush was announced to a stunned nation.

Many narrators discuss significant personal, national, and world events from the time of the Depression through WWII, thus making this book a fine introduction to the momentous Roosevelt era. The stories show how the children of the Depression overcame hardship-and acquired the strong character that enabled them to emerge as liberators of the world.

Can two ex-military misfit aviators start an air charter service with one old dilapidated WWII surplus airplane and turn it into a major airline? Not likely! But with the help of the wealthy and ravishing redhead, Doris Duschane Kissling, anything is possible. This hilarious and irreverent tale follows the lives of Michael Mitchell Murphy and Thaddeus Avery Little from one misadventure to the next.

5 out of 5 stars Fun! Fun! Fun!.......2000-06-22

What does it take to get an adventure off the ground? Two zany aviators looking for a way to make a few bucks doing what they like to do best-fly! Set predominantly in Arizona, the novel takes the reader on a series of rollicking adventures across the western skies, culminating with a serious look at one of this country's biggest injustices.

The somewhat dilapidated airline's first charter flight is enough to leave readers in hysterics, and the author's predilection for colorful language and descriptions keep them entertained throughout the novel. Medicine men, baby bulls, bordellos and porno flicks all keep the the reader laughing and keep the protagonist Mike Murphy in the air.

Anyone with a good sense of humor and a propensity for irreverence will love the novel, but essentially it belongs to a man. If he's a pilot, it belongs to him even more!

4 out of 5 stars There's a right way, and the Navy way.......2000-06-20

When a couple of ex-Navy men start something, you can be sure they'll do it the Navy way. So it was with Air Arizona, the airline they started, but it turned out all right in the end. As a retired Naval Aviator, I recognize and appreciate their problems and solutions (the Navy way). It's a great read and military pilots will enjoy re-living some of their own experiences as they follow these guys in their exploits and successes.

                                5 out of 5 stars A hillarious adventure........2000-04-27

Since I am from Arizona, I loved reading the about the adventures of a "local boy". The flying was great and the author's twist on words was brilliant.
