Customer Reviews:
elementary, but competent.......1999-06-23
Pretty nicely done, but a better title would have been "Handbook of BEGINNING Technical Analysis." I wouldn't call it comprehensive. More like a mile wide and a few inches deep. But if that's what you need this is a nice book.
"exceptional book covering the technical gamut"-Tom DeMark.......1999-03-23
Darrel Jobman has captured the essence of various market timing methods. In simplistic terms he describes the key elements and components of many technical methods. His depth of understanding and his unique ability to present the material is apparent from the first page of the book. For beginner, intermediate, and advanced students of technical anlysis alike, this book is a "must read".

Truly a novel. More story here than in "Reminiscences.".......1998-11-22
Partly inspired by "The Lady and Her Bonds" story from Lefevre's 1901 book "Wall Street Stories." Subtitled "A Novel," because it is. It is longer and more slow-paced with "more story" than is the more popular "Reminiscences of a Stock Operator." I think Sampson Rock and Sam Rock are inspired by JP Morgan and his son Jack, respectively (read Ron Chernow's book "The House of Morgan" for their glum story - a real downer). However, the characters here are much happier than were the Morgans. This is a good read! This is similar to Bouck White's book "The Book of Daniel Drew," except Drew was a complete %$#!@ whereas Sampson Rock and Sam Rock actaully have some heart.

It's not bad, if you're looking for a societal review..........2002-12-28
I didn't find this book as...well, useful...as the three more detailed works on Paul and Karla, although it was far more useful than 'Paul's Case'. This was actually the first of the works released, but didn't come to the attention of many until well after the three true-crime books were well-read by the public.
Davey takes a different look at this case, examining the societal reactions rather than the case history. For the most part, he is using the Mahaffey-French cases to discuss the sociological impact that major events have on society as a whole. A great deal of the book discusses the Canadian publication ban on information pertinent to the trial, and there is even sections devoted to an Internet newsgroup, alt.fan.karla-homolka.
I enjoyed this book from a sociological point of view, but don't recommend it to people who are into the true-crime genre. If you're lucky enough to get your hands on a copy of it, the most interesting thing by far is the frequent black-outs found within the text.

From the supplier: Associations desiring to establish an Internet-based online presence must carefully consider the costs of developing, maintaining and supporting their sites. Web hosting alone typically costs $50-$500 monthly based on the size of the site, its level of activity and the type and number of applications it will use. However, the costs of site maintenance, development and support differ from one party to another. For instance. the American Dental Assn's 1999 Internet budget is $1.2 million, while the National Assn of Purchasing Management set its total current FY World Wide Web budget at $308,000.

Book Description
This sweeping discussion of the philosophy of evolutionary biology is based on the author's revolutionary idea that species are not kinds of organisms but wholes composed of organisms--individuals in the broadest ontological sense. Although the book's primary focus is on species and speciation, it deals with a wide variety of other fundamental units and basic processes and provides a reexamination of the role of classification in biology and other sciences.
In explaining his individuality thesis, Michael T. Ghiselin provides extended discussions of such philosophical topics as definition, the reality of various kinds of groups, and how we classify traits and processes. He develops and applies the implications for general biology and other sciences and makes the case that a better understanding of species and of classification in general puts biologists and paleontologists in a much better position to understand nature in general, and such processes as extinction in particular.
Customer Reviews:
Stimulating and thought provoking philosophy of biology.......1998-12-09
Ghiselin's new book brings together knowledge from the historical, philosophical, psychological, economical, and biological sciences which makes it unique, and it highlights the importance of interdisciplinary research. It is the sort of work that stimulates those of us interested in philosophy of science in general and philosophy of systematics in particular, but it also has the potential to open up the eyes of those not already familiar with the power of the individuality thesis. I highly recommend this book to everyone that is interested in theoretical systematics and its philosophy, and I'm sure it will provide the basis for much stimulating thought and discussion. This book should be used at both graduate and undergraduate courses so that, eventually, the strength of the individuality thesis will permeate all parts of biology and make biology the historical science that Darwin envisioned 150 years ago. For a more detailed review, see Harlin 1998, Zoologica Scripta 27: 87-88.

Book Description
This book presents the statistical theory of complex wave scattering and quantum transport in physical systems which have chaotic classical dynamics, as in the case of microwave cavities and quantum dots, or which possess quenched randomness, as in the case of disordered conductors - with an emphasis on mesoscopic fluctuations. The statistical regularity of the phenomena is revealed in a natural way by adopting a novel maximum-entropy approach. Shannon's information entropy is maximised, subject to the symmetries and constraints which are physically relevant, within the powerful and non-perturbative theory of random matrices; this is a most distinctive feature of the book. Aiming for a self-contained presentation, the quantum theory of scattering, set in the context of quasi-one-dimensional, multichannel systems, and related directly to scattering problems in mesoscopic physics, is introduced in chapters two and three. The linear-response theory of quantum electronic transport, adapted to the context of mesoscopic systems, is discussed in chapter four. These chapters, together with chapter five on the maximum-entropy approach and chapter eight on weak localization, have been written in a most pedagogical style, suitable for use on graduate courses. In chapters six and seven, the problem of electronic transport through classically chaotic cavities and quasi-one-dimensional disordered systems is discussed. Many exercises are included, most of which are worked through in detail, aiding graduate students, teachers, and research scholars interested in the subject of quantum transport through disordered and chaotic systems.

Book Description
This book provides the fundamental statistical theory of atomic transport in crystalline solids, that is the means by which processes occurring at the atomic level are related to macroscopic transport coefficients and other observable quantities. The cornerstones of the authors’ treatment are (i) the physical concepts of lattice defects, (ii) the phenomenological description provided by non-equilibrium thermodynamics and (iii) the various methods of statistical mechanics used to link these (kinetic theory, random-walk theory, linear response theory etc.). The book is primarily concerned with transport in the body of crystal lattices and not with transport on surfaces, within grain boundaries or along dislocations, although much of the theory here presented can be applied to these low-dimensional structures when they are atomically well ordered and regular.

Book Description
The increasing emphasis and importance of mesoscopic systems for tomorrow's high-tech electronics industry as well as a growing research interest in the subject has given rise to the need for a modern introductory text at the graduate level. This book aims to provide the necessary theory and tools to carry out research into the various aspects of the subject.
It starts with a chapter on the theory of quantum transport giving a survey of the basic theory used in transport phenomena including scattering, linear response theory, weak localization, conductance fluctuations and the Landauer-Büttiker formalism. Various aspects of chaos in quantum systems as well as dissipative quantum systems are discussed. Other topics of importance such as single electron tunneling, driven bistable systems, quantized transport and electron liquids are also covered in detail.
Graduate students as well as newcomers to this exciting and expanding field will find this work useful to adopt the necessary theory and overview required to go deeper into the original literature and to carry out research.

Book Description
Look Out for Falling Stars
Charlotte “Lottie” Love has a thing for celebrity. Actually, it’s more of an obsession. All her life she’s lurked in the shadows of Hollywood, desperate to step into the light. When she lands a job at Personality magazine, her dreams of red-carpet strolls, popping flashbulbs, and the attention of white-hot heartthrobs finally start to come true. Even Hollywood’s latest “It” boy falls for her, and everyone wants his story. Can Lottie score the scoop? Ask Lem Brac, a British boozehound in the twilight of a mediocre career who knows an exclusive with the It boy would save his job. Lem looks for help from his new (and only) friend—Mike Posner, a young hotshot reporter just hired away from a New York tabloid. But Mike has some damaging secrets himself that are about to surface. He needs the interview too, and it’s anyone’s guess how far he’ll go to get it.
Welcome to the world of entertainment journalism and star worship, where you’re only as good as the gossip you dig up. Written by a former People magazine correspondent who knows the underbelly of Hollywood hearsay all too well, They’re Not Your Friends slips past the velvet rope and grants access to a wickedly funny—and sometimes scary—celebrity magazine scene.
Customer Reviews:
An up close look at the rich and famous, and the wannabes who investigate their lives..........2006-01-25
Charlotte "Lottie" Love is a celebrity monger. Since she was a small child she has done nothing but lurk in the shadows of the rich and famous, dying for a taste of the good life. So when she lands a gig at Personality Magazine, she feels as if she's hit the big-time. After all, she spends her days and nights rubbing elbows with the rich and famous, and her hot-pink Rolodex is brimming with celebrity numbers. But she's heard the all-time famous saying, "They're not your friends," from Lem Brac, a British boozer who works for the magazine. Like he knows anything. Lem Brac, on the other hand, may be a boozehound, but he knows what he's talking about. After all, when he was Lottie's age, he, too, had fallen for a celebrity. One who made him want to sing out loud, but he soon discovered that "They're not your friends." Which is exactly what Lem tells the new boy at Personality Magazine, Mike Posner, when he turns up from Rochester. Mike acts like a hotshot reporter from New York City, but he's hiding some big secrets about his supposed "tabloid" career. Secrets that could cost him everything. And what does he care if "They're not your friends." He's not looking to make friends in this industry.
It was evident from page one that Irene Zutell knows exactly what she's talking about, when she pinpoints the entertainment magazine market in THEY'RE NOT YOUR FRIENDS. From her descriptions of what reporters do to land a big story, to the various embellishments they lace around their stories, THEY'RE NOT YOUR FRIENDS uncovers it all. Zutell is a great writer, whose characters are intriguing, and very true-to-life, from their imperfections, to their cheats, even to their alcoholism. An up close look at the rich and famous, and the wannabes who investigate their lives.

A fantastic read!.......2005-08-31
This is one of those rare books that I couldn't put down until I was finished. And once I was finished, I missed the characters so much I was already craving a sequel! I found myself laughing outloud in spots and close to tears in others. I also found myself shocked by the way Zutell can weave plots and subplots together. Zutell can write and tell a story! Plus, she has her hand on the pulse of Hollywood like no other! This was the best book I've read this summer!
Ugh.......2005-08-30
I was expecting a fun, diverting read and instead got horrible writing and thoroughly unlikeable characters, all of which -- male and female -- are disgusting, amoral sluts. It's amazing this actually got published. Full disclosure: I didn't read the whole book...I just couldn't justify it.
If you like "Entourage," you'll love this book. .......2005-08-04
My girlfriend devoured this book in a single rainy afternoon, so I felt compelled to check it out. This ain't chick lit. It's a cool read with characters so vivid, you'll hear their voices in your head (especially Lottie Love moaning, "you're number one!")
Instead of the usual star perspective, the story unfolds through the eyes of 3 desperate journalists scavenging for gossip crumbs to feed the voracious appetite of a public screaming "I wanna know!" Goaded by a menacing editrix whose every dictum is redolent with threat and insult, they burn their youthful energy trying to reach stars as fake as dots on a planetarium ceiling.
Zutell ties a knot of anxiety in your stomach as you race with Lottie (slammin', smart, vulnerable), Mike (ersatz reporter) and Lem (the pickled prophet) in pursuit of gossip's holy grail - a reclusive TV star. Then she loosens the knot with belly laughs - if you like dark humor.
As the story zooms, the characters' egos, veneers and prides slough off like loose plaster until each stands naked - but beautifully sculpted and defined by truth. Lottie, perhaps the wisest of the bunch, realizes it's gonna be a tough career and uses her eye-popping charms to ensnare the TV star and maybe extract herself from the fray. But lookout, Lottie.
With Tom & Katie, BradJolina and Ben & Jen the 2nd elbowing global conflagration from the headlines, this book is strangely relevant. Hollywood seems a snake pit and celeb "journalism" a tough gig. But not if you get to spend time on a stake-out with Lottie. Yum!
Irene Zutell knows Hollywood.......2005-07-30
This book was far better than most chick lit, funny, smart & you can tell Zutell understands Hollywood politics. Most books about LA are just so predictable this book kept me interested & there was more to it it than I expected. Definitly a step up from most books in this genre!!!!
