Description:
The aim of the present work was to evaluate the accumulation of selected trace elements (boron, cadmium, chromium, mercury, lead and arsenic) in agricultural soils of the Zone 1 of the Irrigation District 03 (DR03) in the State of Hidalgo, Mexico. The soils of Zone 1 have, on average, been irrigated with raw wastewater for about 20 years (range 6-41 years). A clear positive correlation between the organic carbon contents in soils and the irrigation time was found. The total concentrations of the elements analysed were 0.51-1.89mgCdkg^-^1, 11.59-27.42mgCrkg^-^1, 3.99-47.08mgPbkg^-^1 and 9.2-123.8mgBkg^-^1. Samples of topsoils (0-30cm) were extracted using a modified Tessier method according to a six fraction scheme: easily soluble (F0), exchangeable (F1), bound to carbonates (F2), associated with oxides of iron and manganese (F3), bound to organic matter and sulphides (F4), and the residual fraction (F5). In general, the elements were distributed in the fractions F0, F4, and F5. The concentrations of total arsenic and mercury were below the detection limits (0.03 and 0.01mgkg^-^1, respectively) except for 0.77mgHgkg^-^1 in one soil. The concentrations of total Cr and Pb did not exceed the maximum permissible levels set by the regulations of the European Union whereas total Cd was on the verge. A linear increase between the total metal concentrations and the irrigation time was found. In this study several crops harvested from soils showed Cd and Pb contents higher than those recommended by the Dutch and German guidelines. It can be concluded that the soils may pose a potential risk to the trophic chain and effective restrictions for the cultivation of crops that are sensitive to or known to accumulate heavy metals (i.e. nopal, onions, garlic, lettuce, potatoes, beets, and turnips) should be considered.

Description:
Nicotiana glauca transformed with TaPCS1 was tested for its application in phytoremediation. When plantlets were grown in mine soils containing Cu, Zn, and Pb (42, 2600, and 1500mgkg^-^1) the plant showed high levels of accumulation especially of Zn and Pb. Adult plants growing in mine soils containing different heavy metal concentrations showed a greater accumulation as well as an extension to a wider range of elements, including Cd, Ni and B. The overexpressed gene confers up to 9 and 36 times more Cd and Pb accumulation in the shoots under hydroponic conditions, and a 3- and 6-fold increase in mining soils. When the hyperaccumulator Thlaspi caerulescens was compared, the results were higher values of heavy metal and Boron accumulation, with a yield of 100 times more biomass. Thlaspi was unable to survive in mining soils containing either a level higher than 11000mgkg^-^1 of Pb and 4500mgkg^-^1 of Zn, while engineered plants yielded an average of 0.5kg per plant.

Great for study and trivia.......2000-08-20

This fall, I'm taking my second year of high school chemistry, and am preparing for the AP exam. This book, which I first discovered at my local library, is an awesome prep tool for exams. If you need a study tool that leaves nothing out (and I do mean nothing -- it included a definition of deuterium, which I had heard only on Star Trek. It turns out to be a heavy H-2 isotope!) then this is the way to go.

The condensed phases of helium three provide an exciting laboratory for many fundamental questions in condensed matter physics. Due to its light mass and weak interatomic potential, the condensed phases of helium display quantum effects more dramatically than any other atomic system. Intuition based on classical experience is often misleading in these phases: the solid phase for instance is less ordered at low temperature than the liquid phase. A very funny book about a very tragic life........1998-11-18

I think the BBC television shows of Reggie are the funniest TV shows ever, so when I learned that the show was adapted from a book I had to read it. Sometimes a movie is better than the book or vice versa; in this case, I think that both book and TV show are wonderful, each playing to their particular medium's strengths. After my many years working in business, I find Reggie's life to be hauntingly familiar. The humor can be very subtle at times and some people may not get it. I didn't get where I am today without knowing that this is one of the funniest books I've ever read.

One of those books that makes you smile.......1997-10-02

The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin is the funniest book I have read in a long time. After getting used to the British slang and unusual mood of the book, I was hooked. It takes a while to realize what is going on, and when you do - that is when the situations are funny. The humor is slight and you have to pay attention to get the jokes; especially the insults he gives to his family and co-workers. The ending is hard to accept, untill you realize it is the perfect mix-up to this mans mid-life crisis.
