This book has been a huge help to me. Project estimation has always been a bit of a fingers in the wind thing even when I've worked for the biggest companies. At last, here is a methodical and easy to read guide. Well written and clear, this is as useful for training up new people to help with project bid work as it is for established bid managers who might want to try Coombs well thought out approach.

Full of information but dense.......2007-05-09

I received this book in the high hopes of having everything explained to me in clear English. For the most part, my expectations were met. The downside is that the reading is quite dense in most parts. In addition, being a Tax Professional, I found a few, minor errors in the Tax Planning section. Otherwise, the book has been a tremendous help in my studies to become a CFP(R).

Good book to form the foundation for the CFP training and exam. It's too expensive, however. My guess is that it is priced assuming most students get reimbursed by their employers. For those of us who have to pay for the book out of our own pockets, it is too expensive.

textbook was purchased new. It is a large softcover which I am not sure will hold up for the length of my studies and I have found that much of the tax information is of course out of date and there are a couple of references that are incorrect. Time for a reprint.

Pretty good.......2006-07-25

A lot of good info. Fills in the gaps in my knowledge of investing, finance, banking, estate planning, retirement options, etc. There are quite a few typos, however, and a lot of awkward sentence structure. Strange because it's nothing that MS Word wouldn't catch. It needs a pro writer re-write.

The central purpose of this book is to describe how scientists come to understand the toxic properties of such chemicals and the health risks they may pose. Rather than attempting to expose governmental and corporate ignorance, negligence or corruption, this book explores the underlying scientific issues.

Good background, but a biased representation........2005-05-03

I recently read this book for a graduate level class in pesticides. Although this is an accurate and informative (although a little outdated) account of how risk assessment is done in the United States, I feel like the information was presented in a biased way:

(1) Rodricks minimizes the risks posed by introduced chemicals by emphasizing high accute toxicities of naturally occurring chemicals, without directly addressing the relative prevalance of blowfish toxin, for example, and many widely-used introduced chemicals (i.e. if we're less likely to encounter blowfish toxin, it poses less of a risk to us than common lawn pesticides may pose).
(2) Rodricks mentions several assumptions inherent in doing these risk calculations--assumptions which seem at the surface to err on the side of caution-- but doesn't discuss the arbitrary nature of some of these assumptions and the possible error that may result.
(3) Also, he covers the (then) current requirements for chemical approval, but fails to mention the thousands of chemicals that were approved for use before the current testing regulations were put in place. These chemicals are in the process of being tested according to the new standards, but this testing is taking an unexpectedly long time. To what risks are we exposing ourselves and our environment in the meantime?
(4) When it comes to regulation, Rodricks briefly touches on other considerations, such as economics, politics, and public sentiment. He criticizes the public's "emotional" role in regulation, but when armed with the whole picture, legitimate concerns can be raised on the adequacy of the current state of regulation. Since the public is ultimately assuming the risk associated with the use of these chemicals, I believe public concern is a very valid consideration and has lead to great improvements in the past.

Lastly, this book was published before the focus on endocrine disruptors was established. Endocrine disruptors are chemicals that can affect hormone activity in humans and animals (and even plants and bacteria) even when found only in very, very low concentrations. There is mounting evidence supporting this theory, and the EPA is currently establishing standards for testing chemicals for this activity.

That said, I recommend this book for a baseline understanding of chemical risk assessment in the United States, but don't stop here if you want the whole picture.

Dialogues with the Devil is a fantastic voyage into the correspondence between Lucifer and Michael. The characters opinions and perspectives seem so real and tangible. Taylor writes wonderfully and never becomes dull when expressing ideas.

This book presents the thought that nothing is wholly good or bad. Most people have their own ideas about good and evil, God and the Devil. However strong those feelings are they may blur while reading this book. Reading the 'dialogues' I agree with what's presented then find this is the Devil's dialogue. It brought me to scrutinize my spiritual ideas and beliefs, and to reinforce that even the 'badman' is not wholly bad. Let us look for the good in us all and be honest enough to see the bad in ourselves.

Beautifully written as all the works form Taylor Caldwell an unbelievibly
inspired. Apparently it was dictated to Taylor by Archangel Darios. I don't know but is the kind of dialogue that you cannot miss if you are interested in Religion

Taylor Caldwell is a first rate entertainer and while entertaining she manages to massage the imagination --- very enjoyable, thought provoking read. Most books I pass on after reading - few are kept - kept this one.

This is a grat book for all of those who are seeking for answers about how evil came to be and why God has let it endure through the ages. This book is not intended for a mind that is too sketptical about religious matters. The person who reads this book should read it with and open mind, and be ready not to embrace what is been said, but to think about it, question it, and embrace it or reject it if he/she feels like doing so. Factual or fiction, it is up to reader to decide it. For me, it has helped me spiritually. If someone would like another great book from Taylor Caldwell I would recomend "I, Judas" and "The Romance of Atlantis." You wont regret it, these titles will be in you private library forever.

Speaking With The Devil By Carl Goldberg.......2003-12-03

Speaking with the Devil, by Carl Goldberg, Is a study on malevolence, and tries to define it more clearly. Mr. Goldberg's interactions with his patients like Christopher and Roy along with segments from his own life are some of the ways he shows his theory on malevolence and relates them to a new definition of the word. Not only are the patients prime examples of his definition they also make for a captivating, thought provoking read. His examples are not limited to just his patients however. With thoughts about WWII, Waco, Texas, and Colin Ferguson a gunman who killed or Fatally wounded six on a commuter train heading for Long Island give this book variety.
Recommendations from myself are mixed. While this book has intrigue it is coupled with slower textbook written material. A deep knowledge in the field of Psychoanalysis would make for a better read. However a great deal of new knowledge can be taken away from this book by anyone interested in psychoanalysis or just in psychology itself. Over all it was well written. It also showed the knowledge of the author in his subject matter. It is not a long book however it is one that can not be read straight through. There is a need for a day of rest and reflection periodically.

Carl Goldberg is a Genius.......2001-08-23

Since I began getting interested in psychology, I have wandered around my library looking for books on psychopaths. I was diagnosed as a psychopath when I was thirteen, and think it is grossly misunderstood. After reading the first two chapters of this book, I realised, this is the hardest book for anyone like me to read, it was an awakening to the real world, and made me think very seriously about who I was for weeks. The man who wrote this is an absolute genius, I think probably the best psychoanalyst of his time, perhaps the best im history (considering Freud is a pervert). This book is incredible, but definitely not an easy read. I think that's a virtue though. First class!

A brilliant study of personality-disordered individuals........1999-05-11

Carl Goldberg's book on what turns people into disordered personalities with little or no compassion or empathy for others is a must for those working in the caring and legal professions. In the light of the Columbine High massacre, the nail bombings in London and the crisis in Kosovo, this book is essential reading for anyone at all concerned with the evil that men do and why they do it.
