          Book Description

Advisor to President Kennedy, consultant for foreign governments, and spokesman for family farmers everywhere, Willard W. Cochrane has been a leading expert on agriculture and its problems in the United States since the 1940s. In his straightforward style Cochrane analyzes the propensity for American agriculture to produce too much and the inability of our social and economic system to make effective use of that unending abundance. He then offers his vision for American agriculture in the twenty-first century.

Cochrane looks at two periods in agricultural history: 1953–66 and 1997–2002. Structurally, technologically, and organizationally the two periods are as different as night and day, but in terms of the big economic picture – too much production pressing on a limited commercial demand with resulting low farm prices and incomes – they are mirror images of each other. With this understanding, Cochrane argues that Americans no longer need to farm fragile ecosystems with intensive chemical methods, make huge payments that result in fewer farms and higher farming costs, or bear the environmental consequences of all-out production. Instead, he outlines a bold new strategy for how we can enjoy our abundance and focus our efforts on quality of life and protecting the environment in our rural areas.

                      Book Description

During the 20th century, lake research has become an internationally recognised field of scientific activity, improving our understanding on physical, chemical and biological processes, on fresh water ecology, and water resources among others. The interdisciplinary approaches mainly developed in historical research, as performed by archaeologists and earth scientists, to reconstruct the environmental and climate history of the continents, of human settlements and culture, and to evaluate human impact on the local and global environments. The Geological Society of Switzerland publishes in this volume a selected number of contributions presented during a scientific conference on "Lake Systems from Ice Age to Industrial Time" at Yverdon from 17 to 20 October 2001.

In April 1924, the Honourable Daisy Dalrymple Fletcher must face her darkest fears and confront the one person she's tried to avoid-the dentist. But upon arriving for her appointment, she discovers the dentist stone-cold dead. The circumstances of his death are suspicious but everyone seems anxious to write it off as accidental. Once again it falls to the redoubtable Daisy to uncover the truth behind this case of murder most foul.

                        Customer Reviews:

                        5 out of 5 stars A wonderful series!.......2006-01-30

Daisy and her family make such a great story! I love this book as Daisy settles into her new life as Alex's wife. The characters are wonderful, the humor excellent and the setting is magnificent! This is a definitely an excellent series!

4 out of 5 stars Very nice cozy.......2004-01-15

Daisy Fletcher dreads seeing her dentist and has put off the appointment as long as her aching tooth allows. But when she arrives at the office, the dentist seems to be missing--missing until the ever-curious Daisy insists on looking in his office and discovering his body. Apparently the good dentist had a habit of abusing nitrous oxide and has poisoned himself. But Daisy sees evidence that it isn't just an accident--that it just might be murder. Could it have been the unfaithful wife? The wife's lover? Or possibly the dentist's lover or her husband? Daisy isn't sure, but she isn't going to rest until she's found out more--and shared the information with her husband, a Scotland Yard detective chief inspector.

Set in 1920s England, DIE LAUGHING investigates the habits of a society where people discuss 'people one knows,' complain about the problems finding servants but keep several on staff, and still defer irrationally to the smallest hint of aristocracy. Although this was a different world, the motives for murder remained the same. And someone who has murdered once just may do so again.

Author Carola Dunn writes with a light touch that kept me smiling. Daisy can't stop her curiosity even though she knows that it drives her husband crazy (fortunately for both of them, it is her curiosity that brings out most of the evidence). The relationship between these characters stands in contrast to that of the victims and suspects, most of whom seemed to be involved in illicit relationships with one another.

I found the beginning of DIE LAUGHING a bit slow and bogged down with social references but Dunn soon picked up the pace and delivered a charming story. Readers will enjoy spotting the killer and then watching Daisy and her husband work their way to the truth.

                        5 out of 5 stars Delightfully British.......2003-11-26

Newly wed to the rather longsuffering Chief Inspector Alex Fletcher, the Hon. Daisy Dalrymple is coping with a disapproving mother-in-law and a nagging toothache. Since at least one of those is repairable, she sets off for a dental appointment only to have her usual luck prevail. The dentist is discovered stone dead in his chair, the victim of an overdose of nitrous oxide.

Although his wife, who is with Daisy when she finds the body, assumes the death was a suicide, Daisy notices some significant signs that suggest otherwise. Neither she nor Alex is surprised when it turns out the good doctor is a victim of foul play. So, who is the most likely culprit? The unfaithful wife who is pregnant with her lover's child? Her lover, who had been told the affair was over? The dentist's own lover, who had been informed of the same? Her bad-tempered former military husband? Talk about an embarrassment of riches...

The Daisy Dalrymple series, set in the years following the first World War, are the sort of mysteries that these days get overshadowed by the Hannibal Lecters and Gary Sonejis. For those who just want to be entertained by amusing characters, scintillating dialogue and a good solid puzzle to unravel, that is a shame. DIE LAUGHING is not only delightfully British but has a marvelous hint of farce throughout that makes the reader wish he or she could jump right into the fun. It isn't difficult at all to envision the action taking place on a stage or a movie screen-perhaps with Emma Thompson and Hugh Grant as Daisy and Alex.

What's even better-and something that is all-too-often missing in angst-ridden modern mystery series obsessed with serial killers-is that Ms. Dunn provides all the hints and information necessary for the reader to solve the mystery and identify the culprit. Half the fun of reading this latest installment is finding out if you're right.

5 out of 5 stars funny people make for light murder mysteries.......2004-12-27

This is another excellent entry in Mr Allen's light murder mystery series, where Steve and real life wife Jayne Meadows get entangled in another murder among their show biz friends. Steve is asked by dieing friend Benny Hartmann to host an awards show in his honor, giving out a collection of comedy awards including a million dollar prize for "funniest person alive". Meanwhile, some old time comedians are lining up to win the money, and some end up with knives in their backs. Complicating matters, the knives originated from a purchase by Mr Allen himself! And is Benny really dead or not? Why are people seeing glimpses of him around Beverly Hills?

As with most of Mr Allen's mysteries, he explains the whole thing in the end in a dramatic stage presentation.

4 out of 5 stars Steve Allen Delights Again As A Real Sleuth.......1999-07-27

Steve Allen is an extraordinary man. His achievements in television comedy, educational tv, and songwriting have made him a hou sehold name and presence to millions. His mystery series, the latest being "Die Laughing", revolve around himself,or at least the conceit that the real Steverino, his wife Jayne Meadows and other real people are involved in solving murders which just happen to take place when he's around. In "Die Laughing", Steve is called to the bedside of a dying comic great who makes Steve promise to emcee a one-time awards ceremony with the "funniest Person Alive" to receive $1 million to be paid from the dying comedian's estate. The elderly comic dies and before a few pages have passed several famous comedians are found stabbed to death . All the knives used turn out to have come from an expensive set of cutlery given to the now dead comic great by,surprise, Mr. and Mrs. Steve Allen many years earlier. The denouement, as in all Allen's novels turns out to be both complicated and fascinating. The charm of this and the other books is not really the mystery. It's Steve's comments on society and culture, fame, politics, food and just about anything else that gets into the story.

Having been a Steve Allen fan for many years, I find these mysteries a charming way to meet Mr. and Mrs. Allen and share some time with them and their friends, if only on the printed page. "Die Laughing" and all the other mysteries are fun to read and well above the ordinary.

                              4 out of 5 stars A highly entertaining book.......1999-07-09

The story of a joke that backfired. I appreciated this book which contains elements of a murder mystery interspersed with humour that brought a smile to my face, literally right up to the last page.

5 out of 5 stars My first Steve Allen book and I'm looking forward to more!.......1999-06-28

I thoroughly enjoyed the mystery. I had no idea that Steve Allen wrote this type of book. It was a page turner and I stayed up until it was done. There were many chuckles and it was great that Jayne gets involved in the story. Highly recommend it as a light mystery.

                              4 out of 5 stars Fun Mystery.......1999-01-14

I am a fan of Steve Allen's works especially of his mystery novels. This one was a page turner of the classic sense. I stayed up late late late because I couldn't put this book down.

His mysteries seem to get better by the book. When I put a book down and exclaim to myself that he couldn't write a better mystery than the present, he does!

My one problem with this book (and why I couldn't give it five stars) is there is a minor supporting character who is the key to a kidnapping sub-sub plot. You never find out who this character is/was and how they were able to give a false address, yet be at that address when someone shows up to interview them. (does this supporting character break into this one home every day between 9 and 5 in case someone falls for bait and show up to interview them?

It may sound confusing, but it leaves a little bit of a hole in what otherwise is a fantastic read!
