Almost made me.......2003-02-15

want to go out and get in a fender-bender myself. We've all seen the famous Driver's Ed movies about the deadly physical and emotional consequences of auto accidents, but rarely has there been such in-depth treatment of the risk management and allocation consequences. I've read many books on insurance (and even reinsurance), but with the exception of Ostrager and Vyskocil's work, none have kept me turning the pages like Phillips and Chippendale. Look for more brilliance from this duo; the Simon and Garfunkel of the no-fault insurance literary community.

While I have long followed the work of Jerry J. Phillips, it is more than obvious to the intelligentsia that Stephen Chippendale is the powerhouse in this dynamic duo. Chippendale takes the reader on a tour de force fandango adventure in the no-fault world, it really is quite first rate. Inquiry-based, but not connected to real life problems.......2006-05-26

The strength of this book is that it lays out 35 detailed Chemistry experiments that are not cookbook labs. It has concrete examples of how to have students design their own procedures to solve a problem. When I first started reading the book I was very excited and thought I would definately use it. The farther I read though, the more disappointed I got that the labs do not include real-life connections. Most students are not inherently interested in "Calculating the Heat of Solution," but could become more engaged if the author made a connection between each topic and a real-life problem. I think that a book that is far superior is "Teaching Inquiry-Based Chemistry," by Gallagher-Bolos and Smithenry. It really explains how to get the students engaged in real-life inquiry-based problem solving and describes how to get them to do it as a community of learners.

35 Great Labs.......2004-07-28

I'm a third year science teacher and just wanted a break from reinventing the wheel. This book has 35 great labs that are designed to get the students to think and also get them to understand the content too. These are not cook book labs which was exactly what I was looking for. There are thought provoking questions provided and a sample lab write-up with sample data for each experiment. Also the author includes additional suggestions, common misconceptions and safety information. If you want a book with ready to use labs that are inquiry-based, this is a great find.

Great Omnibus.......2002-05-13

Inspector Morse is just one of my most favorite British murder mystery hero! If one is at all interested in Colin Dexter's mysteries, this omnibus (there are several other too) is a great way to get the best stories. One of my favorite being "Silent World of Nicholas Quinn".

Please note: this "first omnibus" is *not* made up of the first three Morse novels. Last Bus to Woodstock was his first book (1975), and these are '77, '79, and '81. Confusing.... (ignore the star rating, please)

I'm having a difficult time deciding how I feel about this comic.I enjoyed Dying Inside, mainly because Troy's foray into Silent Hill was probably the most psychological of the comics and was the only one that seemed to TRY to stay true to the games. But the last three issues were pretty different, and I was upset about that because they could have developed Troy's story and it would have been better.
Much. Better.
This one seems, at least to me, to seem to capture the feeling of Silent Hill- gloomy areas, disturbing creations- but it doesn't capture the story of the games. I don't want a rehash of Silent Hill 2 (best of them all, IMO) but I wanted something that stayed true to that feeling, and I don't seem to be getting it here. Christabella is a decent character, albeit a foul mouthed little girl, but she doesn't have enough potential to her, enough interest to hold me that much. Keep in mind I'm not entirely all the way through the story... not even close, really, but I'm getting a first impression and it's not a great one. Not terrible, but not great.
I don't know, maybe I should finish it first, but if you're a die-hard Silent Hill fan, like me, you've probably already picked it up just because you love the series so much and want it all. But, for the love of God, fire Scott Ciencin and the new artist and get Ben Templesmith back. Please.

The grafic novel Silent Hill: Dead/Alive, was as good and inovative as its previous noels, but its ending was a bit off. The earlier novels gave me the impression the one must sacrefice, or atleast had to change to survive. This one was a bit weak on that note, regardless it was a good read and a creative story.

I'm really surprised by the savage reviews here. In my opinion, Ferrigno has written another interesting, cool book with a plot that kept me guessing and a relationship that I kept rooting for. I've read his first three and now this one, and I've thoroughly enjoyed them all.

Slightly Better than Terrible.......2004-11-13

Okay, judging from all the other reviews it's obvious that I'm not the only person who didn't like this book. Since Ferrigno has written several other books that are quite good, it truly does seem like this is one that just got cranked out in a hurry without much thought. The plot is weak, the characters mostly unlikeable...I found very little to like about this book at all. In fact, the only reason I gave it two stars instead of one is because the villianous character called The Angel was rather amusing. All in all, I would say avoid this book and buy one of Ferrigno's other novels. This one is just really, really bad...as my title says, it's only slightly better than terrible.

Worst...book...ever!.......2004-07-06

This book was on someone's list of "Great Thriller" books, so I picked it up. Please, do yourself a favor and instead of reading this book, spend some quality time jamming a fork into your ear.

Complete waste of time. I want my money back.

Flat Out Awful.......2000-02-09

To Say Robert Ferrgino's forth novel "Dead Silent" is disappointing would be a major understatement. "Dead Silent lacks the imagination, grittiness, and sharp dialogue that past Ferrigno novels have. I know Ferrigno tries to show the Los Angeles dark side, however this story is too mundane to keep the reader interested.

The novel is about ex-rock star Nick Carbonne who comes home and finds his best friend and his wife shot to death in the hot tub together. Carbonne is the main suspect, and teams up with the best friend's girlfriend to find the real killer. Their journey takes them deep into the underworld of the music industry, phone sex industry and the mob.

In total this book is a major flop. The characters are all the same cookie cutter charatcers. They are all know it all, pinhead punks. Even the Blue Angel character who held the beginings the book together, dissolved into something unlikable. What happened to characters like Quinn and Jen from "Dead Man's Dance" and "Cheshire Moon". What happened to the great plots like Ferrigno's first novel "The Horse Latitudes". Hopefully Ferrigno can regain his form.

stone freeze.......1998-07-07

The characters are not developed, not a nail-biting, engulfing novel to say the least. After the first episode in the novel with the hot-tub, there is no excitement, and you are forced to burn through the pages looking for some sort of intriguing turn of events.

A lot of fun........2007-05-06

Above all, Ms. Bromley's mystery is an incredible series of character sketches, centering on the thoughts of the protagonist, Barbara. The mystery, set in a suburban elementary school, is great fun and full of twists and turns, but more than anything, as I read I became very attached to the characters. Ms. Bromley has a gift for bringing characters to life and investing her readers in their paths. I had a great time reading "Dead Silent," and would recommend it to anyone interested in mysteries or, more generally, in the thoughts of a woman approaching middle age as she contemplates her life and career.

Good Things Come In Small Packages.......2006-03-14

When a female friend handed me this book, I was filled with a sense of dread. I'm not particularly fond of "chick-lit," and this book was clearly written from a female perspective. Then I started to read the book...and didn't stop until my fingers reached the final page.

The author's witty and fluid writing style can make even the most seemingly drab place - an elementary school, for instance - come to life beyond the pale of cafeteria lunch ladies and an endless hall of lockers. Characters come alive in unique voices, and the clever mystery of the piece is underscored by the theme of "wanting something more than life traditionally offers" as the heroine - a schoolteacher - seeks to find her despised colleague's murderer.

For anyone who has ever daydreamed of being someone else, of daring adventure - while being mired in the realities of everyday life - Dead Silent features pure escapism while handling the consequences of escaping from reality as the heroine juggles her fantasy detective role and her real life. In that, it manages to be both whimsical and grounded. When I reached the last page, I found myself realizing I would miss the characters and their world - the mark of a great read.

So when you are handed something as unassuming as this book, don't balk; instead, open up to a new adventure. You might be extremely pleased you did - as I was to read this book.

Dead Silent is terrific! Everyone has a coworker that drives the office crazy, so everyone will nod their head knowingly when they meet Flo, Pine View Elementary School's newest (and least liked) faculty member. But when someone decides to permanently rid the halls of Flo's nasty behavior, a fellow teacher can't help but play detective, with all the adventure and excitement that ensues. Author Sandra Bromley's pointed observations of modern American life coupled with her wickedly sharp humor will have you racing through this book, eager for more!

Dead silent is funny, mysterious with a soft touch of romance! The book starts slow but suspense catches up shortly after. It is smooth reading and is a very well written book.
