Outdated.......2007-09-02

The content of this text is drastically outdated. It's based on Skinner's behaviorism theories which have been mostly overturned by recent neuroscience studies. I just finished my masters degree in neuroscience and was hoping to see the new brain studies alive and well in corporate performance management. The Harvard book is much better, but still doesn't reflect new discoveries in brain science.

Daniels' book provides some great examples of how not to manage, and sure, rewarding and congratulating employees for a job well done is always in order. However, this book basically propogates classical conditioning in the workplace. Sure, it probably works for bottom level employees or simple hard labor tasks, however, anyone with a high school education could very well resent the practices presented in this book.

I'm reading it for a graduate level course in workplace communication outside of the psychology department, and I think it's important to note that my industrial-organizational psychology professors have completely debunked this book. Also, the relevant professional, peer-reviewed journals for applied behavior analysis (what this book teaches) primarily deal with handicapped children, such as those with autism, and pizza delivery drivers. Makes you wonder....

Daniels provides the most important explanation of performance management out there. As Director of HR for a mid-sized service-based organization, I can attest to the theories in Performance Management as being nothing but clearer, easier to apply, and more effective (simply superior) to those contained in the other seven or so books I've read on the same subject. The information presented in Performance Management will motivate your employees to set higher goals and achieve superior results; better yet, they will actually enjoy doing it. This book is truly essential for any manager or supervisor in search of improving their employees' performance, and, in turn, organizational success.

Great book for fundamentals of electrochemistry.......2007-02-24

This book is a great one to brush up on your fundamentals of electrochemistry and a must-have-on-your-bookshelf item for electrochemists. The latest edition also covers sections on modern day applications of electrochemical methods and serves as a good reference to understand the techniques.

Second Edition updated.......2001-05-03

The 1st edition (the 1980 version) was the gold standard of electrochemistry books, and the authors have done an excellent job of revision for the 2001 2nd edition. In particular, the sections on impedance and modern pulse methods flow nicely. The spectroscopy section has been updated as well. I have not worked many problems, but they seem useful in elucidating concepts. The mathematics is of a higher order than one expects from electrochemistry, showing the impact of kinetics on electrode processes nicely. I recommend this text for electrochemistry courses highly.

Excellent reference.......1997-07-27

This is a very complete and thorough book, and covers all of the fundamentals. It suffers from being somewhat out-of-date (1980), so it does not cover modern techniques (e.g., x-ray, STM) or single-crystal electrodes.

Waste of Money.......2006-03-25

This "solutions manual" doesn't actually bother to help you solve anything, it only confirms if you done something correctly. It only provides the answers to approximately 25% of the problems at the end of the chapter.
The biggest problem is that it doesn't show you how to solve these questions, only provides you with an answer. I'd prefer it not give me the answers, but lead me through the theory to solve the problems.
I felt misslead by this book being called a solutions manual, and feel that the price tag is ridiculous for something that is essentially a list of numbers and graphs that should be included in the allready expensive book.
I definately would not recommend this to anyone.

This book is essential item for students who study electrochemistry.
It is very hard to study 'Electrochemical Methods'. But with this student solutions manual, it could become easier.
But, it would be better if all problems were solved.

Discrete-time signal processing has had a momentous impact on advances in engineering and science over recent decades. The rapid progress of digital and mixed-signal integrated circuits in processing speed, functionality and cost-effectiveness has led to their ubiquitous employment in signal processing and transmission in diverse milieux.

Computational methods are new.......2004-10-03

The author gives a heavily mathematical treatment that covers all the traditional topics within acoustics. Much of the treatment can be found in texts going back decades. Like the discussion on point sources and solving the Helmholtz equation, when we have simple sources in free space. Then there are the Green's functions approach to solving various acoustic equations.

What is more recent is the coverage of computational techniques. As computers have gained in power, you can avail yourself of increasingly more effective tools, using some of the chapters in this book.

Unbalanced but, at times, enjoyable reading.......2003-07-28

Billy Williams is a young man on the run. He's recently deserted from the military and is looking for the meaning of life . . . HIS life. He travels the back roads of America and stumbles upon a pig farm run by George Baxter, a strange man with a quirky sense of the world. Billy and George soon form a tenuous bond and are eventually evicted from the `Swine Ranch' by political pressures from the surrounding city. But they don't leave peacefully. A pig slaughter ensues as the local law enforcement arrives to evict them. George and Billy are now homeless and jobless. But this doesn't dampen their spirits. They find a like-minded group of investors who decide to build a pig-haven on a desolate island they name `Pig Spa Island.' This will become the place where beatniks can come to flaunt their political views, kill a few pigs and generally languor around in the mud like . . . like pigs! But problems arise. Who is George really and how did he get so much money all of a sudden? Why is this Fly continually bothering Billy (renamed to Alexander later in the book because his profile resembles Alexander the Great)? Who's been buying up a lot of the group's stock options in this endeavor?

The author (Richard Miller) has an unusual sense of humor but writes, at times, with great conviction and wonderful descriptiveness.

There were some generalized problems with this book, however. Most notably is the falling of the author into a travelogue-like diary of places(this was like reading someone's account of their vacation). Mr. Miller also frequently steps into the realm of teacher/preacher. The author tries to "tell" the reader about the world and it's history, which bogged down the well-written narrative. Far too many historical references were forced down my throat.

All in all this was an okay book to read thanks to the authors able prose. But I think Mr. Miller needs to find a storyline that is more mainstream and that a larger reading audience could identify with.

I couldn't identify with it, but I'm sure there are other readers out there who might.

Pigs and People, Sowboys and Cowboys........2003-06-27

Sowboy, A Factual Fanciful Fiction by Richard Miller; DFI Books, 2003, paperback, 234 pages, $19.50.

Sowboy, as the title indicates, is a Factual Fanciful Fiction, but what the title doesn't tell you is how interesting, entertaining and funny the book is. Pigs and People, Sowboys and Cowboys. A "sow" is a female pig; a Sowboy raises pigs.

We all know that Cowboys are loved and respected and women adore them, but what about Sowboys? Well, Billy Williams sets off on a journey to show that Sowboys deserve the same respect. The characters include our Sowboy, a pig farmer/Roman soldier, a computer-whiz lawyer, a commodities trader and more. Billy's adventure takes you from College, to the Marines, to Pigville, to Chicago and finally to Indonesia where Billy stays, happily ever after with, of course, PIGS.

If you are looking for a great summer or winter read, this is it. The book will keep you interested, excited, and entertained. Sowboy is illustrated and includes a layout of Pig Spa Island, the place in Indonesia that Billy helps create. Of Sowboy, the cowboy writer Larry McMurtry says, "Sowboy is original, arresting, vivid and funny."

Richard Miller's other writings include Amerloque, Bohemia, Snail, Squed, Mosca, Coyote, and more to come. If you haven't read one of Miller's books, start with Sowboy and then move on to the rest. Of these, the back cover presents commentary by Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Herb Caen, Joan Baez, Tom Robbins, William S. Burroughs, and Bruce Anderson.

Richard Miller was in the Marines from 1943-1945. He was a Merchant Marine, student and foreign correspondent based in Paris from 1945-1961. He obtained his Ph.D. from UC Berkeley, and has 6 children and 10 grands.
