I just finished a Cost Accounting class and the professor did not have us use this book! He used his own notes and said the book was not very good.

1 out of 5 stars Opinion from an instructor.......2005-07-31

Unfortunately, I have to agree with one of the previous review. The book lacks consistency and logic. Just to mention one of the numerous flops - how you can talk about economic order quantity and not mention a material planner. The book is supposed to help an instructor. Well, it does the opposite.

    1 out of 5 stars Terrible Book.......2002-05-30

This book is garbage. It is just thrown together for the publisher and author to make money. It is a very superficial review of cost accounting.

3 out of 5 stars Easy to follow........2000-08-24

I was pleased with with this book. At the end of each chapter, a demonstration problem is provided with step by step instructions. Also available are template spreadsheet at the Southwestern website which are very helpful in understanding some end of chapter exercises.

                  Book Description

This book delineates Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) counseling techniques. Supported by case examples, the book explains how to select, train and evaluate an animal for therapy work. The book examines ethical considerations and risk management, provides a history of AAT, and discusses the latest empirical research in the field. The author also includes guidelines for establishing a university-based program for AAT training. Sample forms to be used in screening clients and recording session data are included as well as a series of separate illustrations (line drawings of animals) to facilitate some of the recommended AAT techniques. This book is designed for use in training courses for AAT in counseling and related programs (such as social work, psychology, and rehabilitation counseling). To date, there is no book dedicated to teaching techniques specific to AAT. This book will fill that need.

This is one of the best books available about the use of AAT in mental health practice. I've reviewed most of them for some research I'm doing in the field, and Dr. Chandler's is thorough, based on the latest research, easy to read and absorb, and filled with very practical information. She covers the tremendous benefits of this type of work along with necessary cautions, and emphasizes the importance of proper training and credentialing. The book is ideal for people just entering this fascinating field, but there is also lots of useful information for more experienced AAT practitioners as well.

I read this book in one sitting!!! I couldn't put it down until I had read the whole thing! This book is a spectacular addition to the counseling field in its own right, and fills an important gap left by other animal-assisted therapy (AAT) texts. Dr. Chandler has collected in a very engaging and readable form all one needs to know to effectively conduct AAT. I found the information and guidelines on AAT particularly useful, especially the sections emphasizing examples of therapeutic responses, uses of animals assisting in therapy, and the various requirements for certification. The pictures and descriptions of Dr. Chandler's own work with her 3 co-therapists were fun and informative as well. Before you buy any other book on AAT, buy this one first; read it, read it again, and then see the difference AAT really makes for counseling clients. On second thought, don't buy any other AAT books; this is the only one you'll need.

4 out of 5 stars Timely and Informative.......2005-08-05

Several of my clients use their pets in the important work of assited therapy. I think it's important to understand the many positive benefits our pets bring to our lives. This book is the first one, a ground breaking edition, which explores the positive benefits pets have in the various aspects of counseling. Anyone involved or seeking to become involved in pet therapy should find this book very helpful!

                  Book Description

Handbook on Animal-Assisted Therapy provides a comprehensive overview of the many ways in which animals can be used to assist therapists. Coverage includes how animals can assist specific patient populations (children, the disabled, AIDS patients, etc.), how animals can aid in specific settings (hospitals, prisons, independent practice, etc.), and how professionals can best select appropriate animals (species, breed, and individual temperament) and design an AAT program.
Humans have long had a special bond with animals, initially as work animals, then as pets, and now more frequently as therapeutic companions. Animals help the sick recover more quickly and help the aged live longer and more satisfying lives. Specially trained animals are now helping stroke victims, the handicapped, and others to regain or build lost faculties. Increasingly, animals assist in nonphysical/medical therapies, helping the stressed and angry relax and the shy be more forthcoming.
Contributors represent the top people in the field from hospital settings, vet hospitals, animal training centers, and therapists in practice.

4 out of 5 stars several species offer theraputic effects on humans.......2007-02-12

Seeing eye dogs for the blind are the best known example of animal assisted therapy. But this book describes several other cases, that are perhaps not so familiar. Like the theraputic effect on humans of watching a fish tank. Or interacting with chimpanzees. Or, in some instances, with snakes. The book describes how for many people, there is a stress reduction effect of touching these animals.

Other aspects covered in the book include listing stress signs in dogs or cats. As possible warnings that they might not be useful as companions. Another topic is the difference between a child and an adult having a pet companion.

The book is a good guide for those health care professionals seeking to match animals with humans.

I found it to be a helpful resource. I will probably refer back to it as I continue learning about animal assisted therapy.

This tome features a number of various case study articles on different subjects pertaing to not only animal-assisted therapy, but also to service animals (there is a significant difference). One area (service animals)is for disabled individuals who have an animal-usually a dog-to assist them. The other area is for those interested in Biophilia, how clients benefit from exposure to animals from a therapeutic stance, where handlers bring their animals into long-term facilities, and the like.
I enjoyed this book so much I loaned my copy to a psychiatrist at a neighboring mental health clinc that I know who was conducting a group. She wanted to talk to them about the benefits of service animals for those with mental and emotional disorders, but didn't have the background on the subject. This book was indispensible for her. I plan to add more volumes like it to my library.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the Money.......2002-03-04

This book contains bonafide information to help AAT professionals in everything from forming a practice, zoonotic disease charts, guidelines for AAT in a variety of settings (hospitals, schools etc.), and with a variety of clients to Nature therapy and animal abuse issues.

Additionally, it offers information on assessment tools that can be applied to research in this area. It explains different statistical methods and how to use them.

This book is a 'must have' reference. It is encouraging to see good literature emerging in this field. As a practitioner in this area, I am encouraged by works like this.

                  5 out of 5 stars Extremely informative.......2002-01-26

The Hanbook on Animal-Assisted Therapy is a useful resource on the topic of anthrozoology and animal-assisted therapy. The sections of the book are written by many of the most prominant researchers in the field. The book is interesting, as well as informative.

                    Book Description

The purposes of this book are (1) to explore and expound relativity physics and four-dimensional symmetry from the logically simplest viewpoint by making one single postulate instead of two; and (2) to indicate the simplest generalization of the Lorentz transformation in order to cope with frames with constant linear accelerations. The fundamentally new ideas of the first purpose are developed on the basis of the term paper of a Harvard physics undergraduate. They lead to an unexpected affirmative answer to the long-standing question of whether it is possible to construct a relativity theory without postulating the constancy of the speed of light and retaining only the first postulate of special relativity. This question was discussed in the early years following the discovery of special relativity by many physicists, including Ritz, Tolman, Kunz, Comstock and Pauli, all of whom obtained negative answers. Furthermore, the new theory of relativity indicates the truly universal and fundamental constants in physics, and provides a broad view of relativistic physics beyond special relativity. It substantiates the view and sheds light on the understanding that the four-dimensional symmetry framework can accommodate many different concepts of physical time, including common time and Reichenbach's general concept of time. This logically simplest viewpoint of relativity allows a natural extension of the physics of particles and fields from inertial frames to noninertial frames in which the speed of light is not constant. New predictions in physics resulting from this new viewpoint are discussed. The book is based on papers by the author and his collaborators in Physics Letters A, Nuovo Cimento B, and Physical Review A and D.

                    5 out of 5 stars Jong-Ping Hsu, Einstein's Relativity and Beyond.......2003-06-12

After Yuan Zhong Zhangs' book Special Relativity and its experimental foundations another book on Special Relativity has been recently published in World Scientific's Advanced Series on Theoretical Physical Science: Jong-Ping Hsu's book Einstein's Relativity and Beyond - New Symmetry Approaches shows, that the theoretical research concerning Einstein's theory of Special Relativity is by far not finished. The book is based on papers by the author and his collaborators in Physics Letters A, Nuovo Cimento B, and Physical Review A and D.

The first part of the book gives a brief review of the historical development of Special Relativity by Voigt, Lorentz, Einstein, Poincaré and others. It is interesting to note that Hsu attaches importance to the work of the almost unknown German physicist Woldemar Voigt, who appears to be the first physicist to conceive the idea of the universal speed of light and who was very close to suggest a conceptual framework for Special Relativity, when he derived around 1887 a type of 4-dimensional space-time transformation which was very similar to the Lorentz transformation.

In second part of the book the theory of Special Relativity is extended to a more general theory with four-dimensional symmetry, which is based solely on the first postulate of relativity. Hsu's main objective is to make clear that "any specific system of time such as relativistic time and the universal speed of light are not physical entities inherent in nature but human conventions imposed upon it. However, the four-dimensional symmetry appears to be inherent and truly fundamental in nature" (Phys. Lett. A 196, 1994). It might be a surprising fact for many physicists that relativistic time, or any particular time system, is apparently not a necessary ingredient of a theory for it to to be consistent with all experiments.
Hsu's theory is shown to have new implications for modern physics which differ from those found in Special Relativity: A very interesting special case called `Common Relativity' is considered which is based on the postulate of a a common time instead of a constant speed of light within the four-dimensional symmetry framework. Common Relativity leads to a simplification of the maze of many coupled Liouville equations presented by Special Relativity and makes it possible to derive an invariant Planck distribution. This implies the impossibility of detecting an `absolute' motion of the earth with respect to the cosmic microwave background radiation.

The third part of the book is about generalized Lorentz transformations for constant-linear-acceleration frames based on the principle of limiting four-dimensional symmetry. Two types of transformations are considered: The generalized Møller-Wu-Lee transformations (which are based on earlier, not completely satisfactory approaches to derive transformations for non-inertial frames by Møller, Wu and Lee) and the so-called Wu transformations for accelerated frames. Implications for electrodynamics and quantum field theory are discussed, like the dynamics of classical and quantum particles and the quantisation of scalar, spinor and electromagnetic fields in non-inertial frames.
Experimental tests of these transformations are also proposed, e.g. a measurement of the so-called Wu-Doppler effect which differs from the usual Doppler effect in Special Relativity and could be measured by precision experiments.

One point which I would like to critisize is the fact, that there are special topics covered, of which some are not related to the main topics mentioned above. One of these topics is, for instance, a discussion of a De Sitter and Poincaré gauge-invariant fermion Lagrangian. However, this does not imply that most of them will not be interesting to the reader: For example, one part of a chapter is dedicated to the the invariance group of the Maxwell equations, of which the relevance is not yet clear, as Steven Weinberg commented in his well known book on quantum field theory; furthermore, the question is considered whether the Michelson-Morley experiment really implies a constant and isotropic speed of light; transformations from inertial into rotational frames based on the principle of limiting four-dimensional symmetry are derived in another chapter. At last, the appendix contains calculations concerning Noether's theorem and quantum electrodynamics in linearly accelerated frames. Other special topics, like a proposed experimental test for the twin paradox, are also treated in the appendix.

Nowadays Special Relativity has become a cornerstone of all modern physical theories which have been invented in the 20th century. Hsu's book shows many new aspects of Einstein's theory which are not taught in lectures or by any other books on this subject. Hsu's work shows once again that it is worthwhile not to accept the principles of physical theories uncritically, especially those which have been introduced by people who are regarded as authorities in a field of research. His understanding and appreciation of the Special Theory of Relativity make, in my opinion, the book worth reading for every physicist who is interested in Special Relativity.

Mr. Drake has succeeded in writing a really delightful first book. It is funny, insightful and even a bit enlightening. It is a quick read, but carries a lot of thought-provoking content in its easily accessible language. I look forward to seeing what the author does for an encore. After reading it, I bought several copies for gifts and bet you will, too.

yes I was very excited about this book, needless to say I loved it. It wasn't so much of a race to get to the end but more like a quest for knowledge. The author's words are very enlightening. I felt that I was awakened to a lost but loved beleivief, a way of thinking that I had just forgotten. I love how the author takes the simple idiocies of life and so creatively mixes them. So that you find yourself laughing out loud. Because you know that in some twisted perversion of your own life, this has happened to you! I know that speeking for myself, I would like to see more. I can only give the advice that this book needs to be opened and enjoyed by all. It is my feeling that everyone will be in some way or another able to relate to, and fall in love with the story in this book. A beautiful story about the path of life, that would be easy to see if it not for the greed of humanity, that clouds over the world like choking smog. So lets clear the air and try some understanding, and general compassion see how you like it. I think you'll find that it works well.
                    Thank you for your time.
