Few issues seem able to polarize the nation as easily as affirmative action. The question of how, even whether, to rectify past discrimination in jobs, schools, and law against women and minorities is a perpetually vexing one. While some call for a quota system to set minimum percentages and numbers for minority positions, others say qualifications should take precedence over race when hiring an employee, admitting a student, or enforcing a law. Civil rights groups claim that specific quotas are often the only way to make up for systemic racism; those opposing such actions cite "reverse racism" affecting whites. Recent federal, state, and local cases have challenged several affirmative action programs, particularly those involving school admissions. Decisions in Texas and Michigan, for example have struck down the use of racial standards in choosing which applicants to admit to universities. Bills have been introduced to eliminate affirmative action programs in many state legislatures, though there are some who want to "mend, not end" affirmative action.
Because this most crucial issue of race relations shows no signs of disappearing, the analysis in this book takes on added importance. Taking a look at affirmative action from a legal standpoint, the book addresses and assesses the history, current status, and future of affirmative action initiatives and programs. Such a study is much-needed in gathering information about a raging national debate.

The cost wasn't too bad, and the shipping was great. However, the book has writing all through... which for a workbook makes things slightly difficult. I remember the review saying there was a bit of writing, but it is all through the beginning of the book.
Only Downside Is Price.......2006-03-18
I'm taking Organic Chemistry this semester at a Big 12 university, and bought this book on recommendation from my professor. The simple truth is, past a certain point, you can no longer rely entirely upon memorizing reactions to do well in this subject -- you really have to understand the mechanisms. This book provides the basis for that, and is therefore very valuable. It's only downfall is that it's very expensive... If you're ok with parting with 50 dollars I'd recommend it.
Great Prep for organic.......2003-08-27
This book is not a substitution for organic chemistry by any means. It's mean (the first 2 chapters) to prepare, review, and reinforce concepts learned in Gen Chem but vital to organic.
The last 3 chapters are not review. They require some understanding of organic first. They are meant to reinforce and review what you learn in class.
So you can't just jump for chapter 1 and 2 directly into 3. One and two are meant for prior to organic. And 3 through 5 are to be used during the class.
It's definately got me several steps up on my classmates so far.

Great! But . . . . ........2003-04-19
This book starts out great, because it really makes it clear for us idiots the reason electrons are pushed. It is an engaging study tool that makes you want to open the book everyday. The problem with the book, I'm now learning, is that I now know how to push electrons, but I still don't know when to apply what rules. I thought that the book would have talked more about how to identify electrophiles, and nucleophiles (with regards to reagents). Instead the books jumps for being really easy to follow, to asking the reader to attempt really complex mechanisms. That's like asking a kid who just learned his ABC's to write a book. Very poor ending.
However, for those of you who are clear on electrophiles and nucleophiles, this book would be perfect for you. I suspect that if you know those well, you might not need this book.
A must for students of Organic Chemistry.......2002-03-16
Having had Dr. Weeks as a professor in my college days, I could not reisist purchasing and reading this book. As an educator, Dr. Weeks was gifted in his ability to take difficult course material and convert it into material that was not only understandable, but enjoyable. He has accomplished this again with the third edition of his book. The mastery of electron movement in organic reactions makes the understanding of more complex aspects of organic chemistry more easily achieved. No organic chemistry student should be without this book.

Rancher Bill Belllounds had brought up Columbine as though she were his daughter. Out of affection for her foster father, Columbine had agreed to marry Bill's son., Jack-a drunkard, gambler, coward, and thief. But the man she really loved was cowboy Wilson Moore, and he was everything Belllound's son should have been.
Then the strange, clairvoyant little man they called Hell-Bent Wade came to work at the ranch. "You can believe me when I say somethin' will happen," he declared prophetically. "Columbine isn't goin' to marry Jack Belllound's."
I loved to read the dialogue, Zane Grey's books may be a little dated to the time period when he wrote them, but it's still a good book.
Classic American writing.......2001-10-25
On the surface, this book could be considered dull. But what one must realize, is the era in which this book was written, in the 1920's. For lack of a better way to say it, people, especially children, did not get out much back then. They needed to escape, and thinking of the wild west, was a good a way as any.
I found the book very enjoyable. The book is not for children, if for no other reason, it it is not written for them, more for young adults. If you want to read a western about shootouts, and that sort of thing, then this is not your book. But for a good, descriptive drama, that grabs you and makes the pages turn, then this is the book for you.
Well-written, but the plot is exceedingly dull.......2001-03-06
The name of this book, while intriguing, is somehwat misleading. I expected to read a tale about an enigmatic gunfighter, but instead, was subjected to nothing more than a romance set on a ranch in the old west. The protagonist is not a particularly compelling character, and although the prose itself is well-written, the plot simply trudges along. I had to force myself to complete the book.
