the same old advice we hear from all the financial gurus out there gets dusted off and trotted out yet again. while chatzky has an engaging style she fails to tell readers anything new.

Just another Personal Finance book ..........2005-06-24

Nowadays, Books on Personal Finance abound. This is just another book in the sea of Personal Finance books.

The book walks you through the different aspects of Personal Finance right from setting your personal finance goals to executing those. However, the coverage of the topics is very shallow. The author rarely provides good pros & cons as regards to different choices that are available. Hence it just leaves the reader wondering as to what is the better choice..

The only use of this book is to obtain the "Table of Content" for your Personal Finance pursuits. You can use this "Table of Content" to pursue further in depth discussion elsewhere.

Rather than this book, I would recommend the following books for folks who are just getting started on the Personal Finance front ...

=> The Wealthy Barber by David Chilton (my personal favorite)
=> Personal Finance for Dummies by Eric Tyson

Great Book Jean!.......2003-10-30

I have enjoyed watching Jean Chatsky on TV and have all of her books, although this one is my favorite.

Jean writes in a way that appears as though she is sitting right there and talking to you like your best friend.

I also enjoy the audio version of this book and will play it while going about my household duties or in the car while picking up the kids.

Talking Money is very possibly the best personal finance book out there. I also recommend Jean Chatsky's newest book, "You Don't Have to Be Rich" and any other book by Chatsky that you can get your hands on.

This is not only the best financial book ever written by a female financial author, it is the b est personal finance book period.

You will learn how to buy a home the right way...without getting stuck with a "fixer-upper" (RE: Junk)

You will find the money to fund your childrens college education.

You will find out to how invest for profit.

You will find unique ways to save money and then powerful ways to invest it.

The attacks on Chatsky and comparisons with JBQ are getting old and tiresome. Chatsky is a certified financial advisor. Quinn is a writer. Besides, Chatsky's books actually leave the book racks (RE: They sell)

Good, solid advice. On the money........2003-10-18

Having read over a hundred personal finance book, I wasn't sure if I could learn anything new and was hesitant about buying "Talking Money."

To the contrary, Chatsky offers unique advice. Most of the books I have found pretty much say the same thing only in a different way. "Talking Money" is different.

For example, I know a lot of people bought money market funds as the stock market started to slide during President Clintons last administration. But few people know the right kind of money market funds or the differences between them. Some people even bought money market accounts from banks thinking they were the same as a money market fund from a mutual fund company. Fortunately, Chatsky explains the difference and shows you what to shop for.

Her investment advice is also right on and timely but not too surprising, because unlike other female financial authors, Chatsky is qualified to write and teach this subject.

Her advice on how to buy cars the right way will save you thousands over a financial lifetime. Still paying maximum retail because you want "that new car smell" or "don't want somebodelses problems?" Read Chatsky and think again!

"Talking Money" is a good overall personal finance book. Not just for new people, but for anyone and certaintly a better choice than say "Making the Most of Your Money" by Quinn which I saw mentioned here and which is mostly fluff with outdated material.

Chatsky's book is current, compact and loaded with great information.

I also recommend Chatsky's newest book, "You Don't have to Be Rich" which offers a different perspective on wealth building "The Rich and Famous Money Book" also by Chatsky and "The Savage Truth on Money" by Terry Savage who is also qualified to write on the subject of money and offers powerful, pragmatic advice that actually works.

"Talking Money" is a good book and a must read for all interested in truly Making the Most out of There Money.

Salinization of soils is a major threat to irrigated agriculture and counteracts the targets of costly public infrastructure investments. In this study, salinization is regarded as the outcome of an institutional arrangement which impedes the effective implementation of well-known and well-established control measures be they technical, managerial or economic. In public irrigation systems neither the management units nor the farmers are offered any incentives towards the control of high groundwater levels and salinization if the management units are embedded in a highly centralized non-market institutional setting. Regional development is intrinsically related to the way in which the land is used. Given the rising awareness of the multifunctionality of the world's land resources, policy makers now face the complex task of accommodating multiple objectives of an increasing number of stakeholders in regional development. This implies a need for tools that can be employed to provide insights into the opportunities and limitations of land use. Those tools should be capable of quantifying trade-offs between socio-economic, sustainability, and environment-related policy objectives.
This book offers a detailed account of a range of interdisciplinary methodologies for land use analysis, developed over a twelve-year period (1986-1998) in Costa Rica, through collaborative research between three institutions: one from the North (Wageningen Agricultural University of The Netherlands), and two from the South (the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center [CATIE] and the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock [MAG]). The methodologies span a number of spatial scales, ranging from the field level all the way to the national level. Concepts of systems analysis and information technology play a pivotal role in each of the methodologies. Together, they form a unique toolbox that deserves ample use in the process of agricultural policy design.
With the book, a complimentary CD-ROM is provided which contains a practical account of the methodologies presented, including a full documentation of models, manuals, a number of introductory exercises, as well as previously unavailable data sets. In this way, the CD-ROM offers an opportunity for familiarization with the methodologies by students, research specialists, and decision-makers alike.

Safety aspects have become an outstanding issue in the process of drug discovery and development. Until 15 years ago, drug discovery and evaluation was a sequential process starting with the selection of the most active compound from a series of newly synthesized compounds by means of special pharmacological assays. Safety aspects were addressed by pharmacological testing of the selected compound in high doses in tests directed at indications other than the intended indication of the new compound. These tests were followed by pharmacokinetic studies, which were mainly aimed at confirming of a suitable half-life time and at oral activity. Safety aspects relied mostly on toxicity studies, which however gave information on changes of organ structure rather than on organ function. Toxicological and pharmacokinetic studies were adapted to the progress of studies in clinical pharmacology and clinical trails.

This "sequential" strategy has been abandoned for several reasons:

- Some negative effects on organ function, e.g. ventricular tachy-arrhythmia, were detected too late. On the other hand, negative findings in chronic toxicity studies in animals turned out to be irrelevant for human beings.

- New scientific approaches, e.g. combinatorial chemistry, high-throughput screening, in silico models, pharmaco-genomics and pharmaco-proteomics offered new possibilities.

- There are several examples which show that the "druggability" of compounds was considerably underestimated when the probability of success of a new project was assessed.

The success rate in the pharmaceutical industry and the introduction of new chemical entities to the market per year dropped dramatically, whereas the development time for a new compound increased, sometimes exceeding the patent protection. A change of strategy was therefore adopted, involving the following changes:

- Parallel instead of sequential involvement of the various disciplines (multidimensional compound optimization).

- The term "Safety Pharmacology" was coined. The International Conference on Harmonization (ICH) founded a Safety Pharmacology Working Group. Easily accessible and the most informative tests now have to be selected.

- Exposure of a drug to the body by pharmacokinetic studies on absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion has to be investigated at an early stage of development and can contribute to the selection of a compound for development.

Toxicology experienced major achievements by the introduction of new methods, e.g., in silico methods, toxicogenomics and toxicoproteomics.

The book is a landmark in the continuously changing world of drugs. As such it is important reading for many groups: not only for all students of pharmacology and toxicology but also for physicians, especially those involved in clinical trials of drugs, and for pharmacists who have to know the safety requirements of drugs.

The book is absolutely essential for scientists and managers in the pharmaceutical industry who are involved in drug finding, drug development and decision making in the development process.

Well constructed and potentially useful.......2005-09-15

I have the 2nd edition of this reference, obtained in 2003. Springer-Verlag and their printers have done a very nice job of making this large (1400-page) book, and they provide a very readable typeset. The text is laid out in numerous short application notes describing different pharmacological assays, and these include sections on the study's purpose, a paragraph on the procedure, another on the approach to interpreting results, a fourth cursory section discussing modifications of the method by others, and a usually generous list of references after that. A big plus, I think, is the inclusion of a CD-ROM that contains an Adobe PDF of the entire text. This is a better medium in which to do searching, especially since the hardcover's printed lookup is set up in such extensive run-in indexing, with numerous cascades of indented em-dashes on subentries that it is really kind of annoying. The Contents list, grouped by organ systems, is a lot more useful.

It's still a difficult call making a decision to recommend a text like this - if you are actively doing pharmacological research, your sources are probably more current at your bench, or in recent journals and meetings. But, the very readable structure, many references, and a useful CD-ROM, suggests Vogel's text as an appealing and well-assembled package for academic and group reference.

A wonderful book for pharmacological Researchers.......2000-06-30

The book is a wonderful addition to books on drug evaluation. I feel pharmacologists are getting very few books on this subject. This book can end up the search for such pharmacologists. It will surely boost the research in this field. I hope that this book should reach into hands of every pharmacologists. Whether he/she is a academician or researcher, this book will be a valuable addition to his/her personal library. Each institute conducting research or teaching in pharmacology should also have this book in the library.

This volume comprises a selection of original contributions presented at a workshop held in Montpellier, France, in June 1997. The two main objectives of the workshop were, firstly, to bring together what is understood about the processes underlying agroforestry practice, and, secondly, to provide a forum to explore relevant models and modelling approaches. The workshop was also able to play a role in examining the agroforestry systems encountered in temperate and Mediterranean areas, including both traditional and more innovative agroforestry practices. The main aspects discussed were: ecological interactions amongst components, environmental impact, economics and policy modelling.

My, my, my, what an excellent book........2002-04-17

Wow! I could not believe how remarkably crispy this book was. I mean the pages were just crisp with crispness. You know how when sometimes you're reading a book and you think to yourself "Dam! This book is crispy!"? Well, when you read this book, it will make you think that. Are you ready to ascend to new levels of crispiness? Then reading this handsome man's audacious study of the crisp. I found particularly interesting the area where he compares Lacan's mirror stage to Ralph Ellison's novel: "THE CRISP FACTOR". What a tight, irresistable thriller!

Studies the role and purpose of satire as a literary genre.......2001-09-10

Darryl Dickson-Carr's African American Satire is recommended for college-level audiences; this studies the role and purpose of satire as a literary genre in African-American writings. Afro-American literature and the history of satire are concurrently studied in chapters which argue that major works by Hughes, Ellison and other should be viewed as satires in order to fully appreciate their meaning.
