Customer Reviews:
Great way to rethink your money.......2003-03-17
I have the hardback edition of this book and love it - it still sits on my desk and I refer to it a fair bit. I like the way the author realizes that the eky to managing spending is more psychological than logical - and she gives easy to follow solid advice about how to get out of your own way and get into good habits.
My advice: if you want to get more for your money - Buy it!
The Ms.Spent Money Guide.......2003-01-05
Many book are interesting to read, and then you forget all about them. Not "The MsSpent Money Guide," which I refer to over and over again. It is a book that has changed my life. Most of us feel helpless before ubiquitous money problems. Deborah Knuckey's book teaches you that you can be in charge of your financial welfare, that you are the architect of your future, and that you can be as well off moneywise as you want to be. She says, "Why spend so much of your life working if you don't use your earning in a way that makes you ahppy? Even if you love your job, most work is siimply not that much fun that we'd do it purely for the joy of it. So take the payment for your work and put it to your own best use." Knuckey believes that each of us has different life values, and it is foolish to go along with everyone else's. What mattters, she writes, is that your spending fit your own needs and not that of the Joneses. Some people like fine clothes, others could care less what they wear. Some of us enjoy eating in fine restaurants, others prefer cooking at home.Whatever it is that you enjoy, that is what you should be spending your money on. What matters is not how much money you have, but that it is invested in what will make you happy. Deborah Knuckey will teach you haow to do it. Don't miss reading this book, if you want to enjoy life to the fullest.
Ms. Spent Is Right On The Money!!.......2001-06-14
I recently saw Deborah Knuckey on Oprah, and her appearance was fantastic! In fact, that is why I bought her book. Everything she said was quite true, and the best part about her book is that it is not a budget book or a "scrimp and save" type plan. She encourages people to align their money with their values. If buying lunch everyday is what makes you happy, then do it. But, if the $5.00 per day you spend is taking away from something you would rather enjoy - like a vacation at the end of the year - then try to find out where you can put your money to make yourself personally satisfied. I also enjoyed the fact that Knuckey never tells you precisely what to do with your money. She simply encourages you to realize and understand exactly where it all goes. I know I spend money, and then at the end of the week, I wonder exactly what I did with it. Knuckey encourages you to be proactive and fully understand that you spend your own money and should track it accordingly. Her advice about retirement plans also helped me. I am in my twenties, and I have never given much thought to my life at the age of 65, but now I realize that I can retire a millionare by investing one hundred dollars or less somewhere else, instead of buying things I don't necessarily want or need. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to become a conscious spender and try to make their money work for them, while remaining happy and enjoying life at the same time. Thanks for the advice Ms. Spent!
Everyone can relate to MsSpent!.......2001-06-14
...I don't make enough money to invest in more than my 401k, but she made me realize I can be happy with what I have and still enjoy life! I especially liked her chapter about 'when your means are not enough' because in the world I live in... they aren't! Thank you MsSpent!
This "Conscious Spending" Guide is Terrific!.......2001-06-05
Deborah Knuckey's "Ms Spent Money Guide" offers a very practical model for spending (and living) consciously, to take full advantage of your financial resources. I think her paradigm is extraordinarily helpful. We all think we know how we are spending our money, but few of us ever step back (beyond a Quicken report) to analyze truly whether the way we are spending our money is enriching our lives the way we would like. Ms. Knuckey's "consious spending" model is easy to understand and to apply day-to-day. The book is also very fun to read--she has a terrific sense of humor, and her logic is quite simple to follow. (Ms. Knuckey was delightful in her appearance on Oprah this week--she's very down-to-earth, and her book shows it). I highly recommend this book for anyone like me who isn't an abusive shopper/spender, but nevertheless hasn't paid enough attention to what I've bought over the years (thus resulting in some items in the garage, the basement and the closet that I never possibly would have bought if I had been spending "consciously"). Reading this book quickly and keeping Ms. Spent's model in the back of my mind has already started to help me avoid spending mistakes.

Book Description
'Restitution for wrongs', or 'restitutionary damages', is the judicial award which compels the wrongdoer to give up to the victim the benefit obtained through the perpetration of the wrong, independently of any loss suffered by the victim. The establishment of a civil trial in Roman law, which left compensation as the main response, and a widespread, loss-centred interpretation of the Aristotelian theory of corrective justice explain, but do not justify the difficulties encountered by modern attempts to account for restitutionary damages. Mistakes in the classification of this institution have complicated the picture. To overcome some of these problems, this study considers the basic structure of restitutionary damages from different angles. In part one, the topic is analysed from a comparative perspective. Although the focus remains on English law, the German, the Italian and the Roman jurisdictions provide research data which, in part two, support the development of a theory of restitution for wrongs as corrective justice.

Hilliard, Francis. The Law of Torts, or Private Wrongs. Boston: Little, Brown, and Company, 1859. Two volumes. xxxviii, 540; xxxvii, 719 pp. Reprint available January 2006 by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. ISBN 1-58477-541-6. Cloth. * Reprint of the first edition. This was the first English-language treatise on the subject. As the Dictionary of American Biography points out, it marked the "beginning of a revolution in legal thought" because it was the first to approach torts as a distinct legal category. Before Hilliard, "practical text-writers...regarded such wrongs as too divergent in nature for unified treatment and merely discussed some distinct wrong" (V:53-54). Hilliard [1806-1878], a Harvard-educated attorney who lived in Boston, was a prolific and distinguished author of treatises on jurisprudence, real property, contracts, business law and other subjects.

The Practice of Principle: In Defence of a Pragmatist Approach to Legal Theory (Clarendon Law Lectures)
ASIN: 0199253617 |
Book Description
This classic book by one of America's preeminent legal theorists is concerned with the conflict between the goals of justice and economic efficiency in the allocation of risk, especially risk pertaining to safety. The author approaches his subject from the premise that the market is central to liberal political, moral, and legal theory. In the first part of the book, he rejects traditional rational choice liberalism in favor of the view that the market operates as a rational way of fostering stable relationships and institutions within communities of individuals with broadly divergent conceptions of the good. However, markets are needed most where they are most difficult to create and sustain, and one way to understand contract law in liberal legal theory, according to Professor Coleman, is as an institution designed to reduce uncertainty and thereby make markets possible.

Book Description
Road rage threatens mental health and physical safety. People use cell phones in public places with blithe indifference for the tranquillity of others. Smokers, while fewer in numbers, still have a defiant look about them when they light up outside office buildings and are not especially careful where they blow their smoke. In these and similar incidents involving a lack of common courtesy or respect, individuals often turn to the legal system to resolve personal disputes. But is the law the best vehicle for enforcing good manners or behavior?
George W. Jarecke and Nancy K. Plant explore this question by describing in rich detail a broad range of casessome shocking, others amusingthat illustrate how intentional acts of incivility have been punished by the nation's laws and litigated in the courts. Writing in accessible, engaging prose for the general reader, the authors focus on different legal actions that fall under tort law: battery and assault, trespass and nuisance, emotional distress, verbal abuse, badgering, stalking, defamation. They consider why the law is ineffective in settling common disputes of incivility, suggesting that it actually encourages both unnecessary litigation and another act of incivilitythe lawsuit itself. Jarecke and Plant discuss the limitations of the law in regulating certain discourteous acts, such as obscene and blasphemous speech, and question if claims centering on laws that govern incivility are actually increasing or merely being expressed in different ways. For example, while cyberstalking has become enough of a problem to require criminal legislation, a new etiquette for e-mail is just developing. The authors demonstrate that the legal system is neither an efficient nor an effective mode of enforcing common courtesy, and argue convincingly that individuals may be better advised to seek mediation by objective third parties to resolve common disputes.
In today's litigious society, this lively and informative work offers a refreshing perspective on the interplay between courtesy and the law.

Book Description
When potential litigants first approach a lawyer they are generally interested in finding out one thing only: are they likely to be able to win damages ior any other kind of remedy and what kind of quantum of damages are they likely to receive? It becomes the lawyer's main task to try to argue for a remedy and to persuade the court that the plaintiff has a good cause of action. Textbooks about contract and tort frequently treat damages and other remedies as an afterthought when in fact it is the issue of remedies which is a constant and ever present consideration for the plaintiff and his or her lawyer. This new book, containing contributions from many of the UK's leading specialists, brings to the fore a range of issues which are of topical interest to litigators and to teachers of law. In some instances the isues are currently the subject of reform proposals and these essays usefully highlight the principal issues facing the reformers and the objections which have been raised by those opposed to reform. In addition four of the essays tackle a strand of tort law which is of rapidly growing importance - the area of professional negligence. The contributors are among the best known writers in this field and their essays combine practical and academic perspectives which usefully highlight contemporary trends in professional negligence litigation. The first chapter in the book also offers a unique and controversial overview of tort law in the UK by Professor Patrick Atiyah who argues for a complete rethink of the system of personal injuries litigation in the UK, starting with its abolition and replacement by a vastly expanded system of private insurance.

Book Description
A readable, informative, fascinating entry on each one of the 100-odd chemical elements, arranged alphabetically from actinium to zirconium. Each entry comprises an explanation of where the element's name comes from, followed by Body element (the role it plays in living things), Element of history (how and when it was discovered), Economic element (what it is used for), Environmental element (where it occurs, how much), Chemical element (facts, figures and narrative), and Element of surprise (an amazing, little-known fact about it). A wonderful 'dipping into' source for the family reference shelf and for students.
Customer Reviews:
A fascinating tour de force.......2007-03-14
This is an outstanding piece of work aimed at the intellectually and scientifically curious that also works as a nice reference book on the elements and the Periodic Table.
After a short introduction filled with some top ten tables (e.g., top ten elements in the earth's crust: "Oxygen 466,000" parts per million, "Silicon 277,000" p.p.m., etc.) Emsley spins out a chapter per element in alphabetical order beginning with Actinium and ending with Zirconium. Each chapter is filled with interesting and specific information about the element in question. In the chapter on carbon, for example--understandably one of the longest in the book (7 pages), since carbon is so important to us and so plentiful--there are sections entitled "COSMIC ELEMENT, HUMAN ELEMENT, FOOD ELEMENT, MEDICAL ELEMENT, ELEMENT OF HISTORY, ELEMENT OF WAR, ECONOMIC ELEMENT, ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENT, CHEMICAL ELEMENT," and "ELEMENT OF SURPRISE."
The idea is to place each element in terms of its importance in these various categories as well as giving all sorts of information about its history, abundance and uses. In the ELEMENT OF SURPRISE section Emsley usually comes up with something unusual or striking about the use or the history of the element. In the case of iron, Emsley cites a research project that "fertilized" a barren part of the ocean west of the Galapagos Islands with iron sulfate with dramatic results: "Within a week this barren span of ocean bloomed and turned green with plankton, proving that it was simply lack of this metal that was limiting their growth." (p. 211)
Included in the sections are tables showing how much of the element is in the human body (in the blood, in bones and tissues), and how much is in the environment (in the crust, in the soil, in sea water, and the atmosphere). A third table gives the element's chemical symbol, its atomic number, its atomic weight, melting point, boiling point, density and oxides, if any.
There is a final chapter on the history and development of the Periodic Table, which I found interesting. One of Emsley's strengths is his ability to make the material just so fascinating to read. Part of that comes from his obvious love for his subject matter. He is so good he makes me regret that I did not study chemistry when I was young. Just reading this book has opened my eyes to some of the ideas of chemistry and has greatly improved my knowledge of what the elements are like and how they interact with one another to form various molecules as they become familiar and not so familiar substances.
Here are examples of some of the fascinating details that can be found in the book:
"Iridium is the most corrosion-resistant metal known... The standard metre bar, kept in Paris, is made of a platinum-iridium alloy (90% platinum and 10% iridium) but this was superseded as the basic unit of length in 1960 by a line in the atomic spectrum of krypton (see p. 213)."
And on page 213 we find that "The standard was changed in 1983 to one based on the speed of light in a vacuum, a metre being the distance light travelled in 1/299 793 458th of a second, as measured by a light beam from a helium-neon laser."
"Inside the body, iron, as iron(III), is strongly bound by transferrin, a protein found in serum and other secretions... Transferrin binds iron tightly and, because it does so, it acts as a powerful antibiotic simply by denying this essential metal to any invading bacteria which need iron to multiply. As soon as our body registers a bacterial invasion, it produces more transferrin to mop up any free iron in the blood stream and 'hide' it in the liver." (p. 206)
"Neodymium-iron-boron (NIB) magnets are so powerful that those handling them must wear protective glasses--they fly together with such force that they can shatter and send splinters flying in all directions. At times young people have used these industrial magnets to attach ornaments to their cheeks by putting one of the small magnets on the inside of the mouth. However, the magnet and ornament have then proved impossible to pull apart, sometimes necessitating a visit to a hospital for surgical removal." (p. 270)
I have two suggestions for the next edition: (1) provide an index; (2) give us the value of the elements in terms of current (or relative) dollars or Euros. It would be fun to compare. (I realize that in some cases, the value of an element because it is so rare or not used for anything would be just an educated guess, but that's okay.)
Another interesting book by John Emsley is The Thirteenth Element: The Sordid Tale of Murder, Fire, and Phosphorus (2000). See my review.
Fantastic .......2006-06-08
Dittos to all who gave this book 5 stars. This is a fact filled book that anyone would find interesting.
Building Blocks is a Delighful Read; fails as a solid reference.......2006-02-19
While I am greatly enjoying Nature's Building Blocks by John Emsley, I am sorely disappointed in not finding an index for this wonderful book. When trying to go back and pull out some gem or another, I find myself groping and grumbling at this editorial oversight.
Ah, cool chem book...wish I had had it a semester ago..........2005-12-16
I've been teaching chemistry for the last three semester at our local community college. Never mind the fact that my major was in neuroscience (emphasis on studying disease in the brain). I had loads of chemistry classes, so it wasn't like I was coming into these classrooms with no previous knowledge.
But I've been having problems first of all with the quality of the textbooks recommended to teach with...actually, had to beg the school to get a different book because the chem textbook they were using was very wrong in so many problems and even basic text. Not only was I finding them, but the students were finding them also.
The next problem I'm having is the overwhelming emphasis put in general chemistry on math, rather than on the science of chemistry and the elements. Yes, the students need basic algebraic constructs, but if all the teaching in chemistry is mathematically-related, I lose my students very quickly in an area which can be loads of fun to study (given a great teacher who knows how to teach it...which I luckily had two great teachers in chemistry).
So I've been looking at the books being recommended to me by Amazon.com, and this is the third book. I liked the other ones. They were fun and had some hilarious history, but first of all I want my students to become really familiar with the periodical table and all of the elements. All the math in the world, without a basic understanding of the elements is going to lead no where, especially since my students are usually going into medical fields.
This book is clean and concisely written, and I can hardly wait to use it this coming semester.

Great source for Elemental Education.......2005-10-09
I loved this book. I am teaching an introduction to chemistry course and a general chemistry course. This book has been an invaluable tool for having interesting facts about the elements at my fingertips.

Book Description
This book, written for non-specialists, discusses the apparent conflict between relativity and quantum mechanics, concentrating particularly on what Einstein called "spooky interactions at a distance." The author proposes a resolution based on a causal interpretation introduced by Louis deBroglie and elaborated by David Bohm. He shows that one can introduce a "medium" or "aether" in a manner consistent with both relativity and quantum theory, and which allows one to unify the two theories via the identification of circularly causal processes at their core. The mathematics is kept simple, making the discussion accessible to a wide audience. Several crucial experiments are discussed in detail.

Tears-in-my-eyes funny.......2003-03-05
This book is hilarious. I especially liked the banner ads. What a hoot. Quite a few of them had me laughing out loud. If you are in the tech business you should buy this book. In fact, buy two and pass one on.
Laugh Out Loud.......2003-01-24
When a book makes you laugh out loud, not once, but every chapter, you know you've found a comedic gem. Valley of the Geeks' biting satire on the state of high-tech companies in Silicon Valley is one of those books you want to read time and time again. I found myself actually quoting it so my colleagues would think I'm as witty as Zack Urlocker. It has been years since I've read a book that combined such incredible insight with intelligent humor.
The essays that roast such high-tech icons as Bill Gates, Larry Ellison, and Carly Fiorina first make you nod, then smile, and then laugh out loud.
And, the interspersed chapters of "Banner Ads We'd Like to See" are among the funniest things I've ever seen. They, alone, make Valley of the Geeks a must-have.
A great romp through silicon valley.......2003-01-20
This book tells it like it is about silicon valley. Its a very funny collection of essays from the web site. I laughed out loud reading this. If you like Dave Barry or SatireWire, you'll love "Valley of the Geeks". Includes some of the famous "banner ads we'd like to see" and fake spoof ads. Anyone who has worked in tech or knows someone who has will love this book.
