Customer Reviews:
Lots of valuable information for any investor!.......2000-12-29
I think this book is great! I would have expected a book on stocks and investing to be rather dry but this book is very well written and quite readable. When I think of online investing, I think of buying and selling online but from this book I found there is an astounding amount of SEC and other information on companies out on the Internet these days enabling me to be able to research online as well. The authors have spelled out just what to look for and where to go for researching potential stock investments. The glossary in the back is handy (for me as a novice) as well as the appendix of investing related web site reviews. I have always been leery of stock investing, leaving it to my better half, but with the understanding and resources I am getting from this book, I have the confidence to venture carefully out... I would think ANYBODY who does any stock investing would DEFINITELY want to read this book!

Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2004-06-07
Great book. Even if you do not have any backround in soil science or geology this book is easily readable, though a scientific mind is essential. As well as its suitability for the novice this book represents an essential reference text for the undergraduate/graduate/doctoral student as it goes into considerable depth. The book does, however skim over the biogeochemistry of micronutrients with only 1 chapter devoted to them. So if its in depth information on these that you are looking for I would suggest you look else where. Apart from that, this book is easily reccomendable.

Book Description
Combining an ecosystems approach with new insights at the molecular and biochemical level, this book presents the latest findings on how plants respond, physiologically, to sulfur in their environment. It explores key areas – such as biotic and abiotic interactions, adaptations to fluctuating supply, and sulfur’s role in plant metabolic networks – to assess the functions and implications of this essential plant nutrient in a range of natural, semi-natural and anthropogenic environments.
Leaders in the field, Hawkesford and de Kok, draw together an international group of experts in plant sulfur nutrition, to collate and integrate new information from molecular biology, ecology and physiology. The result is an important new reference on the relationships between plants and sulfur at all levels – including contributions arising from recent ‘omic’ approaches. With implications for issues such as agriculture, forestry, water management and ecosystem restoration, this book is relevant to a wide audience, from graduate level students and researchers, to policy makers and practitioners.

Book Description
This is the second volume in the series
Nutrients in Ecosystems. Sulphur as an essential plant nutrient has received little attention. This is explained by the facts that sulphur was obviously in sufficient supply from the atmosphere, from soil and as a by-product in mineral fertilizers. Increases in the yield potential and thus in the nutrient requirement of modern crops, however, as well as remarkable changes in SO
2 emissions by private households, power stations and industry, associated with legislative measures to reduce air and water pollution, have altered the situation to a large extent. In particular the public concerns about forest decline and pollution-induced climatic changes have initiated extensive research programs on the physiological functions of sulphur in plants, on the occurrence and plant availability of sulphur in agricultural and forest soils and on the chemistry of sulphur compounds in the tropo- and stratosphere.
This book cannot be an encylcopedia of sulphur in all the media mentioned nor in all ecozones of the globe. However, it aims to give an overview of our present knowledge with a special focus on the sulphur situation in agrosystems of industrialised Western Europe. The ecological trends for sulphur observed in this region during recent decades are likely to be mirrored wherever industrialisation and urbanisation take place and where an increasing standard of living demands clean air, good drinking water and nutritious food. Agricultural production systems, therefore, require well-founded information on the actual sulphur nutrition and potential sulphur-fertilizer requirement of crops and soils respectively. It is hoped that this book will provide this information and will encourage further research where open questions still exist.

Description:
Changes in land use and management can affect soil structure, soil organic carbon (SOC) and other nutrients reserve (such as N, P, S). We analyzed organic carbon (OC), total nitrogen (N), and total sulfur (S) in particle-size, aggregate-size and size/density fractions of soil organic matter (SOM) in order to identify the SOM pools most affected by the conversion of a Podocarpus falcatus dominated mixed natural forest into a monoculture Eucalyptus globulus plantation 21 years ago on a reddish brown Nitisol at Munesa, Ethiopia. Bulk soil OC, N, and S concentrations and stocks in soil to 20cm depth were not significantly changed after the conversion of the natural forest into Eucalyptus plantation, but C/N ratio narrowed significantly. Soil organic C, N and S concentrations, and C/N and C/S ratios in sand and silt separates from the plantation samples were significantly reduced, while clay N and S concentrations had slightly increased. The losses of SOC, N and S in the sand fraction were more pronounced than that in the silt. Aggregate stability and total SOC, N and S concentrations of the aggregates were not significantly different in samples from the Eucalyptus plantation and the natural forest. In the plantation samples, both the free light fraction (LF) and the intra-particulate organic matter (iPOM) C, N and S concentrations associated with the macroaggregates were significantly reduced. Differences in the total amount of the free LF (on the basis of water-stable aggregates proportion) between the two forest types were not apparent, suggesting that SOM quality is more prone to changes in land use and soil management strategies than the total amount of SOM. The loss of iPOM was higher than that of free LF probably due to gaseous losses of organic matter (OM) inside the aggregates caused by high fire temperatures during clearing and site preparation. In both forest types, the LF OM comprised the highest percentage of whole soil OM and the loss of particulate organic matter (POM) accounted for much of the losses of OM. Overall, the results showed that analysis of OC, N and S concentrations in soil particle and aggregate-sizes, and size/density fraction of SOM allowed sensitive detection of changes in SOM dynamics and soil fertility resulting from changes in land use.

Customer Reviews:
Revew of guide.......2007-01-10
The book was very helpfull. Covered most of the topics covered in class. Very self explanitory text and very easy to understand.
Great, but wait a minute please........2005-10-15
I gave this book 5 stars because it explains different topics based on electrochemistry, pH, precipitation, potentiometry, etc., and how they relate amongst themselves. The book really gets deep and provides plenty of examples and exercises to master the topics.
That was the good part, now I have to tell you that paying as much time as this book requires is not worth it. I have worked as an Analytical Chemist for three years where I have always been searching which technologies most laboratories and companies use. I also got a M.S. in the field and have taken a deep look at the job market around the world. After all this experiences, I hardly find a place where they would ask more than just taking pH of samples and some titrations that do not require the deep knowledge of this book. It is High Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Gas Chromatography (GC), Atomic Absorption (AA) and spectroscopy (especially UV/Vis) the ruling technologies.
For some reason the academic communities have been really careless about the skills chemistry students need in analytical labs. Most analytical chemistry book deal deeply with electrochemistry topics and most schools have students study them rather deep. The chromatographic techniques are not usually given the importance they require. They regard them easy topics and too many books that do mention HPLC and GC cover too much on equilibrium theory and more useless topics. And the same academic communities are rather incongruent because too much electrochemistry is not very useful in the chemistry subject GRE.
Not so good for graduate exams.......2005-05-04
If you are looking for a means to review for a graduate school exam in analytical chemistry, look elsewhere. The material covered in an undergraduate general chemistry textbook is much better for review purposes. For those actually taking the class, I cannot comment on this books' utility.
If you're psyched to learn chemistry..........2000-11-04
I own many, many Schaum's Outlines, and am satisfied with all of them. However, before you buy this outline of Analytical Chemistry or any of the other Schaum's Outlines, you need to ask yourself what your needs are. If you are looking for a brief review of a subject, you should look elsewhere. If you are taking a course in Analytical Chemistry and need a little help with some areas of it, you should look elsewhere--preferably, ask someone with a thorough grasp of the subject to explain those areas to you.
The Schaum's Outlines are best used as a self-study tool. Let's face it, reviewing an entire subject and solving all the problems to gain a solid grasp on the material is difficult and time-consuming, and I suspect few students already enrolled in a course will have the extra time to rehash what they've already been told by reading through a Schaum's Outline, and few will want to go through so many problems--at least in my courses, the problems we are provided are too much to begin with.
For review purposes, Schaum's may help some students. However, since you need to know what your course will test you on specifically, you would need to go through the outline along with your notes. Therefore, spending more time reviewing your course notes might be a better use of your time.
Schaum's Outlines are essentially cheaply made textbooks, and, as with other texts, the writing varies widely from one book in the series to another. If a cheap self-study of a course is what you seek, or you'd like to preview a course you plan to take, by all means go with Schaum's. If you are a student looking for help with a subject, seek it elsewhere.
Analytical Chemistry made easy.......2000-06-13
The book explains all the concepts regarding analytical chemistry in a very lucid manner, which makes it a very easy to understand book. The way in which the book deals with the problems in analytical chemistry is noteworthy. If only the coverage would have been deeper my rating would have been 5 star.Still a must read book for who want to get started and get a feel of problems related to the subject of analytical chemistry.

In the cold regions, freezing of the ground presents major geotechnical and environmental challenges. In Russia, oil and gas gives these regions special economic and geopolitical significance. After glasnost, it became evident that research there was more comprehensive but the problems far greater than elsewhere. This translation of a wide-ranging account of the effects of freezing and their importance for geotechnical undertakings, has been prepared by an international team of specialists. It makes available a uniquely readable and technically accurate review, especially valuable to international organisations and those involved in joint ventures. The English edition of the 16-sheet geocryological map of Russian has been prepared by the same international team. Book Description
This is not a science book, nor even a book about science, although most of the contributors are scientists. It is a book of personal stories about Walter Kohn, a theoretical physicist and winner of half of the 1998 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Walter Kohn originated and/or refined a number of very important theoretical approaches and concepts in solid-state physics. He is known in particular for Density-Functional Theory. This book represents a kind of "oral history" about him, gathered - in anticipation of his 80th birthday - from former students, collaborators, fellow-scientists, and friends.

Book Description
Book Description
The final installment of De Havens dazzling tour of 20th-century America, revealed through the world of the comic strips and their creators. In 1967, the Summer of Love, Roy Looby, a gifted young cartoonist, deserts his mentor and joins the dropouts of San Franciscos Haight Ashbury. There Looby creates The Imp Eugene, a libidinous comic book character who is a far cry from his mentors signature figure, Derby Duganthe cheerful icon of a more optimistic generation. Celebrated and vilified for his creation, Looby soon disappears, rumored to have lost his mind during the drug-fueled creation of a cartoon masterpiece, and its up to his long-suffering brother, Nick, to find him. A long, strange trip across a wildly changing America, Dugan Under Ground is a rich, inventive tale celebrating the mythic qualities of American popular culture.
Customer Reviews:
Almost Great.......2002-12-24
Usually the final book in a trilogy adds resonance to the entire series. In this case, readers may enjoy Dugan Under Ground better if they haven't yet read its predecessors--in particular, Derby Dugan's Depression Funnies, the second book in the series. Dugan Under Ground is a fun, vibrant romp, full of wonderful period detail. But the characters don't resonate the way characters in an exceptional tale do--or as they do in Derby Dugan's Depression Funnies.
To put it another way: If you read Derby Dugan's Depression Funnies, you'll laugh and you'll cry. If you read Dugan Under Ground, you'll laugh. Which in and of itself isn't a terrible thing.
Comix Americanus from Walter Geebus to Roy Looby.......2002-02-01
'Dugan Under Ground' is a wonderful novel which focuses on the underground comix milieu of the late '60's and early '70's, but covers far more ground in times before and after. It begins with the story of Ed 'Candy' Biggs, his betrayal-ridden personal life, and his trajectory from desperation to success and failure in his career as the inheritor of a classic newspaper strip, 'Derby Dugan.'
Through an odd sequence of events, Biggs takes on a young and brilliant protege, Roy Looby, a character very roughly based on R. Crumb. As Roy's sensibility and fame develop wildly, he's pursued by several fascinating characters, including his resentful and adoring brother who detests and delights in his role as the 'inker' of Roy's demented comix; an ineffectual and obsessive comix fan who becomes a financially hopeless publisher and quasi-academic promoter of comix-as-art; and a cynical hippie vixen whose identity shifts gears repeatedly throughout the chase. The novel itself becomes kaleidoscopic as it barrels on to its heartbreaking finish.
'DUG' will appeal especially to readers interested in the history of comics, of the underground scene in particular, to admirers of Crumb and of the Terry Zwigoff film on Crumb and his family (don't expect the Loobys to be just the same, though!) As a portrait of grand hopes and bitter disappointments in the America of the '50's, '60's and beyond, it stands beside works like 'Vineland' by Thomas Pynchon and 'Underworld' by Don DeLillo. I thought it was great!
sadly, not nearly as good as Derby Dugan's Depression Funnie.......2001-10-11
I really enjoyed this author's last book but this one has the feeling of needing a strong editor to tell the author that some of his ideas need to be fleshed out, others tossed entirely, and that he needs to go back in and get the thing from its draft-like into a real novel.
"Under Ground" is kind of a mishmash sequel to DD's Depression Funnies, and takes place in various times up to the present. Many of the characters clearly based on real-life pop icons, the obviousness of this seems to make the author think is enough to justify not developing the characters past a few recognisable mannerisms. This book also rides heavily on the coattails of the previous book, strangely assuming that the Dugan cartoon character from the 1920's -- rather than any human characters -- is interesting enough to support these new, poorly concieved human characters from the 1950's through the present.
I really hate to pan this book because DDDF was so well written and enjoyable, but I'm putting it down 3/4 of the way through and not anticipating picking it up again.
