Customer Reviews:
way out of date.......1999-07-24
At one point this might have been a useful book, but it's dated and not all that useful in today's fast-changing market. Where's the reference to day trading?
Two years out of date with technology.......1998-10-02
With the advance in investing software and the development of internet sites which specialize in charts, quote, portfolio tracking and news, this book is out of date. All of the software reviewed in the book is also out of date by about two years.
I learned more than I thought I would.......1998-04-29
I consider myself a fairly knowledgable investor. I bought this book thinking I might pick up a little information about on-line investing. It turned out that I learned a whole lot more. Even if one doesn't invest on-line, Jubak's process of evaluating a stock is great. The book is a 'little' bit dated, but otherwise right on target. I highly recommend the book and Jubak's many articles on the Microsoft Investor web site.
Excellent resource for the online investor.......1996-12-02
As you would expect from a book authored by the Senior Financial Editor of Worth magazine, this Guide is an excellent resource to the software and online financial services that any investor can use to become more successful. The book is as comprehensive as it is well-organized, and Jubak developed detailed working examples of the software and services hew reviews in the book. All in all, this title would be a terrific addition to any investor's bookshelf

Got better and better..........2007-03-01
This book started out rather dull and almost lost me after the first few chapters...I even told my wife that I doubted I'd finish...then, all of a sudden, the story got interesting. The author might be a tad idiosyncratic, but he seems honest and by the end I came to appreciate his words and observations.
Peaceful, enjoyable read..........2006-07-15
This book is a delight to read. Peaceful and quiet in setting and tone, I return to it often when the dream of moving to our farm seems far away. How simple a one-person farm...and how complex. Winchester takes pleasure in the smallest of details and the largest as well.
A treasure of a book.......2006-05-10
This is one of those books that sneak up on you and before you know it you are finished and wish that you had only just began. It is unfortunate that the reviewer from Tulsa, Ok (not the buckle of the Bible belt, Alabama is) felt the need to read his perversions into this book and it's sweetly innocent look at a simple life, it proves that some people just don't get it. Quite the contrary to what that reviewer said, the author seemingly had plenty of friends, who showed up to help him out when his barn was destroyed by a grass fire. One has to ask, did he really even read this book at all, or just skim over it for a book report? Maybe he should just stick with Hemmingway, who by the way, did NOT live on a farm.
A FAVORITE TO BE READ EVERY WINTER.......2006-01-20
This beautiful little book is one of my favories. I read it every winter and it reminds me why I try harder every year to live a simple life. I wish Mr. Winchester would write more.
This book was [...]........2005-09-20
This was a very self indulgent book, but it was still good because it often focused on the worth of farm work. However, I often found myself asking, "Does this guy have any friends?" He must be really out there socially. Perhaps he's a repressed [...].
His subtle high-brow mindset, I'm sure, is probably pleasing to the liberal reader, who may find it enchanting to know the author still maintains a literary train of thought, and his diet 'inclining to the Mediterranean.' He often refers to other cultures, and he seems to really enjoy milking his cow (read into that one what you will).
Again, it's an okay book. There's plenty of parts to skip over, though. I'm sure Hemmingway would've written about farming much more differently.

Town "rush" versus country "paradise" - it is not a new subject!.......2007-07-27
1854: could you imagine on that time the town "rush" could be a bigger motivator to return to country? Yes, that was the situation of the author. It is a description of how an urban family "returned" to country through a systematic approach, something uncommon on that time worldwide. Their concept was explored in the last 150 years by most of "small rural property" text and recommendation from Government Agencies and private authors, but it was delicious to read first impressions from that time. Great reading.

Book Description
The small pig likes to eat, and he likes to run, and he likes to sleep. But most of all, the small pig likes mud. The farmer's wife loves the small pig, but she does not like mud.
"This farm is too neat and shiny for me!" says the small pig, and he runs away.
He stops at a swamp, then a junkyard, and finally he comes to a big city sidewalk. There the small pig thinks he finds what he is looking for-good, soft mud. But is it?
Arnold Lobel's endearing story and bright funny pictures are sure to delight all readers.
Customer Reviews:
A great book.......2005-11-24
This is a great book for parents to read to their kids! My mom read this book to me and my sisters when we were little and now I'll be reading it to my son.
a finely aged and well worn classic.......2005-08-14
my dad used to read this book to me when i was a small boy. it was always one of my favorites to hear and i believe my dad's favorite to read. he had a way of reading this story that was so engaging. i still have that very same book tattered and worn having also been read many many times by me to my three boys, now mid to late teens. the story is one im sure many people can relate to. something akin to the grass is always greener on the other side, be careful what you wish for and sometimes its better to leave well enough alone. at least thats what i seem to get out of it. small pig lives on a country farm with the farmer and his wife. small pig is heavy into his mud. the farmer is cool with this but his wife is not. she decieds to clean it up using a monstrous vacuum cleaner. small pig is not with a clean pigpen so he runs away. he happens upon various places with mud that look good at first but turn out to be inhospitable. eventually he finds his way to the big city. noise and filth abound and he finds what he thinks is a wonderful mud pit but turns out to be a cement square for a sidewalk. next thing he knows he's stuck and no matter how hard he tries he cannot get out. slowly people begin to notice his predicament and the crowd eventually swells to mob like proportions. mean while the farmer and his wife are frantically searching for small pig. as the fire department shows up to rescue small pig the farmer and his wife happen by. "whats going on here?" the farmer ask's a bystander. "oh nothing, just a pig stuck in the sidewalk" the man replies. the farmer and his wife make their way thru the crowd. simultaineously small pig is free'd. they speed their way back home to the country where small pig is given all the mud he needs. "he sits down and sinks down into the good soft mud". i will go my whole life remembering this book as my dad read it to me and how i read it to my son's and thats what makes it such a treasured book.
A little masterpiece.......2005-03-22
_Small Pig_ is as good as the books in Lobel's Frog and Toad saga, which is high praise indeed. It's a story told with Zen-like simplicity and humor. Serene acceptance is the best way to handle life's annoyances, if you can manage it. Asked one time why so many of his characters seem to be neurotic, Lobel said: "They didn't start out that way but, if you talk in short, choppy sentences and repeat words a lot, you begin to sound neurotic quickly." If you have a small child, introduce him or her to the world of reading with this little masterpiece of children's literature.
Small Pig.......2003-10-03
I thought this book was very funny but I still felt bad for the poor little pig who got stuck in the sidewalk, thinking it was mud. This book was very enjoyable and I recamend it for ages 6-9 year old children. This book teaches you that you shouldn't sit in wet concrete.
Small Pig is excellent.......2002-05-03
This book appeals to both kids and adults because, along with the great, whimsical illustrations and easy-to-read words, the book also has all the elements of a great story. The irony of the farmer's wife vacuuming up a pigpen and of a pig getting stuck in cement are precious; there's just enough tasty sarcasm to make you grin as you read. My favorite line is when the farmer pulls over to ask what's going on, and the man replies, "Oh, nothing. Just a pig stuck in the sidewalk." Classic. The small pig's expressions are priceless; Lobel has great character development. Superior book.

Book Description
Discover the fun and fascination of chemistry through hands-on demonstrations For many, chemistry is perceived as a burdensome affair, weighed down with mathematics and restricted to well-guarded research facilities. While these facets of chemistry are certainly of paramount importance, laboratories and calculators do not necessarily convey the inherent beauty of chemistry or the excitement of chemistry at work.
This book challenges the perception of chemistry as too difficult to bother with and too clinical to be any fun. Cathy Cobb and Monty L. Fetterolf, both professional chemists and experienced educators, introduce readers to the magic, elegance, and, yes, joy of chemistry. From the fascination of fall foliage and fireworks, to the functioning of smoke detectors and computers, to the fundamentals of digestion (as when good pizza goes bad!), the authors illustrate the concepts of chemistry in terms of everyday experience, using familiar materials.
The authors begin with a banga colorful bottle rocket assembled from common objects you find in the garageand then present the principles of chemistry using household chemicals and friendly, nontechnical language. They guide the reader through the basics of atomic structure, the nature of molecular bonds, and the vibrant universe of chemical reactions. Using analogy and example to illuminate essential concepts such as thermodynamics, photochemistry, electrochemistry, and chemical equilibrium, they explain the whys and wherefores of chemical reactions. Hands-on demonstrations, selected for their ease of execution and relevance, illustrate basic principles, and lively commentaries emphasize the fun and fascination of learning about chemistry.
This delightful and richly informative book amply proves that chemistry can appeal to our intuition, logic, andif we're willing to get down and dirtyour sense of enjoyment too.
Customer Reviews:
What a Joy!.......2007-08-22
While laced with humor, this is a very serious book, and truly a joy. What most surprised me is its willingness to tackle in some fashion all the deepest theoretical findings and issues. They may simplify, but are careful never to misstate. In comparing the dual nature of light, wave and particle, to a pet cat, both wild (when stalking birds) and domestic, the authors are less scientific than usual, but even this analogy contributes to understanding. Given my own confusion, I was glad to learn that "no one has completely explained" why a moving current causes magnetism. The authors do a really good job with chemical attraction, and explain that "all bonds have a bit of each quality - covalent, ionic and metallic - to a greater or lesser degree". I did find some of the references to entropy in explanations a bit unsatisfying, and I think it is because the authors were trying to avoid any discussion of probability.
There is a wealth of information. Despite having taken chemistry, years ago, I learned for the first time such things as what distinguishes a diesel engine, and how cheese is made. I did not actually do any of the many experiments described, but got a lot out of just reading about them. "The Joy of Chemistry" is a great book for anyone interested in science, whether or not you have ever taken a chemistry course.
A beginners chemistry book.......2007-03-20
Lots of explanations, and simple experiments for a basic chemistry primer.
Great intro to Chemistry.......2006-08-20
I bought this book when my 12 year old said he wanted to learn chemistry. I started reading it to refresh my memory, and kept losing track of the book as my son kept stealing it! I have a liberal arts kind of mind, and was NOT looking forward to having to learn chemistry again to teach to my son. This book has changed my mind! I wish Cathy Cobb had been MY chemistry teacher, and I am looking forward to learning more.
Great chemistry book with a lot of home-grown experiments........2006-01-25
I've been teaching hearing students at a local community college chemistry for the last two years, and enjoying it immensely. What I have not enjoyed was trying to find a decent textbook to use. The one we are currently using by Karen Timberlake is pretty good, especially given the horrendous book I started out with. However, I've been looking for some more chem books that can bring chemistry not down to the level of the students, but rather illustrate how chemistry is involved in our daily world.
The first book I got was a great book on the individual elements. that still wasn't what I was looking for. This book by Cobb and Fetterolf was exactly what I was looking for. Not only did it have experiments that I can use as demonstrations prior to my student's own labs, but it also provides significant background and understanding into all the important chemistry concepts. Loads of black and white illustrations, and just a good book overall. I noticed the first review on the back of the book was by the author of our current chemistry textbook, Timberlake...thought that was funny though not necessarily a selling point originally for me.
I didn't get the title "The Joy of Chemistry" until they mentioned the other two famous books with titles beginning with "The Joy of ...." Cute trick. Won't be selling this book off any time in the near future, as I am just now finishing reading it the first time and now I am going back with a 'fine-tooth' comb over the entire book and take out what I can use for different chemistry labs and classrooms.

Relates basic chemistry concepts to everyday life instead of complex math formulas alone.......2005-07-04
Many titles assume chemistry facts should best be left to the weighty college-level text: not so Cathy Cobb and Monty Fetterolf's Joy Of Chemistry: The Amazing Science Fo Familiar Things, which relates basic chemistry concepts to everyday life instead of complex math formulas alone. Chapters blend science, invention history, and a lively survey which translates chemistry concepts to real-life examples. Yes, there are formulas and scientific notes - but also a wonderful layman's language which makes Joy Of Chemistry accessible to a wider audience than most.

Book Description
The book content corresponds to a course of the International Summer School of Theoretical Geodesy held every 4 years under the sponsorship of the International Association of Geodesy. This particular course, that was given at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, has been dedicated to the theory of satellite altimetry as a response to the increasing need of scientific work in this field due to important recent and forthcoming space mission. The course was conceived to supply a good theoretical basis in both disciplines, i.e. geodesy and oceanography, which are deeply involved in the analysis and in the use of the altimetric signal. The main items of interest are the physical theory of ocean circulation, the theory of tides and the ocean time-variability, from the point of view of oceanography and the orbit theory, with particular regard to the formation of the radial orbital error, the so-called cross over adjustment, the analysis of geodetic boundary value problems, the integrated determination of the gravity field and of the radial orbital error, from the point of view of geodesy. All these arguments are treated from the foundation by very-well experts of the various fields, to introduce the reader into the more difficult subjects on which advanced research is currently performed. The peculiarity of the book is in its interdisciplinarity as it can serve to both communities of oceanographers and geodesists to get acquainted with advanced aspects one of the other.
Customer Reviews:
Very Good.......2000-10-10
It is a very good book for someone new in satellite altimetry> it gives the basic and most valuable concepts of satellite altimetry and its implementations to gravity field modelling and oceanography.

Book Description
In the period between the birth of quantum mechanics and the late 1950s, V.A. Fock wrote papers that are now deemed classics. In his works on theoretical physics, Fock not only skillfully applied advanced analytical and algebraic methods, but also systematically created new mathematical tools when existing approaches proved insufficient. This collection of Fock's papers published in various sources between 1923 and 1959 in Russian, German, French, and English. These papers explore some of the fundamental notions of theoretical quantum physics, such as the Hartree-Fock method, Fock space, the Fock symmetry of the hydrogen atom, and the Fock functional method. They also present Fock's views on the interpretation of quantum mechanics and the fundamental significance of approximate methods in theoretical physics. V.A. Fock was a key contributor to one of the most exciting periods of development in 20th-century physics, and this book conveys the essence of that time. The seminal works presented in this book are a helpful reference for any student or researcher in theoretical and mathematical physics, especially those specializing in quantum mechanics and quantum field theory.
