Book Description

The Theory of Incomplete Markets provides a unified framework for analyzing the real, financial, and monetary sectors of an economy. It describes an innovative theory that takes into account the fact that in order to coordinate their activities and share their risks, agents are forced by the imperfections in their knowledge and their propensity for opportunistic behavior to trade sequentially and to make only limited contractual commitments into the future. This book studies the consequences of trading with such a sequential and incomplete market structure for the equilibria of an economy: competitive markets no longer provide the ideal way of allocating resources and even with rational expectations monetary policy is nonneutral.

The theory presented in this book retains the simplicity, coherence, and generality that are the hallmarks of traditional general equilibrium theory, while moving the nature of the markets, contracts, and constraints on agent participation into closer conformity with the actual structure of markets observed in the real world.

Students and researchers will appreciate how the book incorporates results from the latest research while remaining accessible to a wide audience. The theory is built from the bottom up, with ample nontechnical motivation and a user-friendly presentation that constantly draws on the reader's economic and geometric intuition. Historical discussions in each chapter help clarify the origins and current limitations of the theory.

This is the first of two volumes. Volume 1 focuses on the role and functioning of financial markets in a competitive setting. Volume 2 will study more general models that combine the real and financial sectors of the economy and depart from a purely competitive analysis. In addition to providing basic insights needed to understand the theory of incomplete markets, this volume provides the essential tools needed to understand the more general analysis of Volume 2.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Unfair.......2002-12-12

The previous review is not only unfair, but also irrelevant. If you do not like the field of GE under incomplete markets, fine. But then you would certainly not be in a position to comment on any book in the field, would you? Moreover, comparing apples and bananas has never been the brightest of ideas: this is not finance, this is GE under incomplete markets.

1 out of 5 stars Esoteric and Useless.......2002-09-10

If you want to learn about finance, go read Cochrane's Asset Pricing. Magill and Quinzii's book starts off from a very broad model, called "General Equilibrium under Incomplete Markets", and by the time that you've understood all the notation, you're basically at the end of their book. Yield curve, Black and Scholes, Continuous time finance, Futures, Corporate Finance... don't think it's in their book. The authors have a perception of financial economics that is ivory tower like, not applicable, and esoteric. But then again, if you want to be theorist, this might be just the right book for you. If you want to be more than an "...", really, go read Cochrane, Hull (on contingent claims), and Merton's Continuous Time Finance (now that's a book (bible) worth spending some time on) and many other high quality textbooks. You will have spent wise money instead of buying an outdated, overrated/pretentious, boring and useless textbook.

5 out of 5 stars The best text on the theory of incomplete markets.......2000-06-05

Magill and Quinzii provides a one-stop shop for masters/PhD level introduction to the theory of incomplete markets. The book covers the main topics in a highly readable manner and with very good examples. It is also the only book in the market that focuses on incomplete markets in such a detailed way. I believe the book belongs in the library of all students of advanced financial economics.

5 out of 5 stars Covers All the Bases.......2007-06-24

Identity theft is now the fastest growing crime. It can happen anytime, but there are things you can do to protect yourself and this book gives you lots of suggestions about actions you can take to reduce the probability that you will be the next statistic. Must reading to protect yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Great resource for helping protect your identity.......2005-08-20

I've had my credit card and bank card information hacked at least four times in as many years, so I know that identity theft is a very real and imminent problem. Jerri does a great job in this book of helping you understand just what identity theft is and how criminals go about it. After all, you can't begin to protect yourself if you don't understand the risks and weak points. For the price of a meal at a decent restaurant, this book will help you begin to protect the credit card you would have used to pay for that meal, and all those other aspects of your identity that are unfortunately readily accessible to identity thieves. The book is short and concise but still hits all of the high points. You'll be up to speed in just a few hours on identity theft and ways to protect yourself.

                      Book Description

In the last decade of the 20th century, there has been great progress in the physics of earthquake generation; that is, the introduction of laboratory-based fault constitutive laws as a basic equation governing earthquake rupture, quantitative description of tectonic loading driven by plate motion, and a microscopic approach to study fault zone processes. The fault constitutive law plays the role of an interface between microscopic processes in fault zones and macroscopic processes of a fault system, and the plate motion connects diverse crustal activities with mantle dynamics. An ambitious challenge for us is to develop realistic computer simulation models for the complete earthquake process on the basis of microphysics in fault zones and macro-dynamics in the crust-mantle system. Recent advances in high performance computer technology and numerical simulation methodology are bringing this vision within reach. The book consists of two parts and presents a cross-section of cutting-edge research in the field of computational earthquake physics. Part I includes works on microphysics of rupture and fault constitutive laws, and dynamic rupture, wave propagation and strong ground motion. Part II covers earthquake cycles, crustal deformation, plate dynamics, and seismicity change and its physical interpretation. Topics in Part II range from the 3-D simulations of earthquake generation cycles and interseismic crustal deformation associated with plate subduction to the development of new methods for analyzing geophysical and geodetical data and new simulation algorithms for large amplitude folding and mantle convection with viscoelastic/brittle lithosphere, as well as a theoretical study of accelerated seismic release on heterogeneous faults, simulation of long-range automaton models of earthquakes, and various approaches to earthquake predicition based on underlying physical and/or statistical models for seismicity change.

                        Book Description

This invaluable book is a historical account of the Cornell Electron Storage Ring and its main detector facility, CLEO, from their beginnings in the late 1970's until the end of data collection at particle energies above the threshold for B meson production in June 2001. The CESR electron-positron collider was the culmination of a series of electron accelerators constructed at the Cornell Laboratory of Nuclear Studies, starting in 1945. Measurement of the products of the e+e- collisions was performed with the multipurpose CLEO apparatus, built and operated by the CLEO collaboration, which consisted of about 200 faculty, staff and graduate students from over 20 universities. This account is based mainly on the author's recollections as a participant.

Perhaps the most peculiar aspect of The Peculiar Memories of Thomas Penman is the author's fascination with every form of bodily excretion. Feces, sputum, semen, earwax--the list is endless. We discover early on that Thomas "from the age of four ... navigated all lavatories and shat himself everywhere else," and the pages that follow detail the boy's obsession with his own fecal matter in terms that are as imaginative as they are repugnant. Having established from the get-go that young Thomas Penman is not going to be an ordinary hero, Bruce Robinson (who wrote the screenplays for the films The Killing Fields and Withnail & I, and also directed the latter) then launches us into his protagonist's life with a vengeance. In short order we discover that Thomas's grandfather, Walter, is riddled with cancer and as obsessed with naked women as his 14-year-old grandson. In addition, Thomas's father, Rob, is involved in an illicit affair and his mother has hired a private detective to prove it. And Thomas himself is madly, truly, deeply in love with the divine Gwen Hackett.

Pornography, masturbation, voyeurism--according to Robinson, these are the main preoccupations of the adolescent boy. This book is being compared to J.D. Salinger's Catcher in the Rye, and who's to say that Holden Caulfield might not have had similar hobbies had he been written 40 years later? If you can get past the raunchiness of the language and the situations, Thomas makes an unexpectedly sympathetic hero, and his relationship with his half-mad grandfather is oddly tender. The Peculiar Memories of Thomas Penman is not for the faint of stomach, but for those who like their fiction raw, this one fits the bill. --Alix Wilber

                        Book Description

Meet thirteen-year-old Thomas Penman. Growing up in a bizarre household of eccentrics, including a mother and father who wage a silent war against each other. Thomas downs his first drink, smokes his first cigarette, pursues the beautiful Gwendolin Hackett--all the while forming a special bond with his beloved, ailing Grandpa Walker, a World War II veteran prone to dark habits. An obsessive snooper, Thomas undertakes a quest to locate his grandfather's legendary pornography collection, setting in motion a series of misadventures that ultimately leads him to uncover secrets about his life that will change him irrevocably. The Peculiar Memories of Thomas Penman is a hilarious, engaging, and touching debut novel, a brilliant tale of one British working-class teen's unforgettable coming of age.

5 out of 5 stars Don't read this book in public.......2007-01-03

I made that mistake and read it on a cross-country flight. Almost immediately, I was faced with the challenge of trying to stifle my laughter so as not to disturb the people around me. I was not entirely successful because many passages of this book are just laugh-out-loud hilarious.

But beyond its hilarity, this book is a well-written coming-of-age tale. Normally I would avoid a "coming-of-age tale" at all costs, but The Peculiar Memories of Thomas Penman contains none of the precious sentimentality which plagues the genre. Instead it's riotously funny in all the right spots, while at the same time it is a fine story of the relationship between a boy and his grandfather.

                        Highly recommended.

Ok straightforward enough - I am a fan of 'Withnail and I' and ';The Peculiar Memoirs of Thomas Penman' - firstly I've seen a lot of films since first seeing 'Withnail and I' in the late 80's - I mean french films (Betty Blue,Les Amants du Pont Neuf) german films(Wingsof Desire) Serbian, Chinese, Northern European,English, American, a lot for one person - bucket loads - but after over 20 years 'Withnail and I' ids still my favourite film of all time andit;s had a lot of competition - sometimes everything comes together in a film, whether it's as raw as a spade sliced spud or a styilisded piece of perfection which 'w& I' is both in spades nothing has come close for me. OK so that's 'W & I' out of the way.

I read 'The P eculiar Memoirs of ...' in Venice, Italy and then gave it to my girlfriend at the time, we split up a year later but we're still pals, so next time I must ask her whatr she thoyght of it, in any case I loved it - mademe feel less like a freak for my porn obssesscion and less guilty for feeling guilty in rthe first place and the healing and painful course that love outside of ones immmediate family will take throughout ones adolkescent and adult life.
I guess a lot of folks could associate with 'W & I; forgive the discguysting abbrteviation. but I'm pissed on two bottles of red wine (3.95 euros from aldi - still have one left : ) and perhaps many can associate wiyth Thomas Penman - they both seem male perspective orieantated - from their standpoint well Bruce Robinson is a man/male bollox, buyt where else should one come from bu6t their origins. Cheers to Bruce and to a beautiful portrayal of a decent love in Thomas Penman. To Innocence or the decency of the naive savage sarcasctic sosphisticate! Please publish this - maybe clean it up a bit. I have been a good amazonian custmner in the past!

4 out of 5 stars Memories is a good, if disturbing, read.......2004-06-16

An old man, a boy and his feces make Memories peculiar.

Thomas Penman, in Bruce Robinson's The Peculiar Memories of Thomas Penman, has a bizarre problem.

He leaves steaming piles of his own feces hidden all over his house. He buries the "Shakespearean potatoes" under couch cushions, behind clocks, in cabinets and once, in a pinch, in his schoolmate's hat.

After reading Robinson's Peculiar Memories, it makes sense that this is Robinson's first book and that prior to this he wrote and directed movies. He was nominated for an Academy Award for his screenplay, The Killing Fields. Were Peculiar Memories a movie, surely it too would be up for an award because it is a compelling read from beginning to end, if for no other reason than that it is so peculiar.

Intermingled with a touching, albeit weird, story about a boy and his grandfather, is a story about a boy obsessed with porn, a girl he is beset with and parents constantly in the middle of a row.

Unfortunately for the sweeter parts of the story, it's the nastier parts that stick with you.

Thomas lives with his grandfather, Walter, and communicates with him mostly through Morse Code. Their conversations are mostly one-sided because Thomas' machine is the only one that receives, as well as sends, messages. It was Walter who taught Thomas Morse code, a skill he learned in World War I.

It was in WWI that Walter became ill through an unfortunate turn of events that ended with the top of his head being blown off.

Since his brains had been shot out of his head and shrapnel was embedded in his belly, one might think Walter would have died. But he managed to live for 17 days - because maggots ate away the rot in his body - until Germans found him. After moving Walter, the Germans performed an experimental procedure on him, shoving his brains back in his head and placing a metal plate on the top of his skull. This miraculously saved his life.

Back in the United States, Walter managed to live a fairly normal life, with his hair carefully combed to cover the shiny metal plate on his head. Soon though, the wounds in his belly lead to fast-spreading cancer, and with it, impending death.

With Walter so close to death, Thomas finds himself driven to find the key to the cabinet where the old man keeps his collection of pictures of naked women before his grandfather dies and the treasure is lost. Thomas glimpses the photos for a glorious instant and he starts to see what sicknesses Walter's war injury has spawned.

Walter, possessive of his porn, knows that Thomas has been prying and tells the boy that he is occupying himself with the wrong secret. It is with this revelation that the real adventure of The Peculiar Memories of Thomas Penman begins and the mysteries unfold.

Robinson writes with great description, maybe even too much at times. He creates a story that is a quick read but that ends a little too neatly. The love story that winds its way through Thomas' struggles at home is just a little too cute and not very believable.

Despite these things, The Peculiar Memories of Thomas Penman works because it is hard not to turn the page and see what sick thing Thomas does, finds or buries next.

4 out of 5 stars elegantly written book.......2002-10-24

The Peculiar Memories of Thomas Penman is an elegantly written book which deserves praise. This book remind me of Mahfouz's "Palace Walk" and Kamal's childhood though in a complete different setting. What really amazed me is the details of the childhood experiences that the author has put through - we all can identify ourselves with Thomas since we all have gone through some of the same experiences. Through out the book we find the deep undercurrent of love between Thomas and his grandfather. Both Thomas and his grandfather are not the model charatcers that every parent want their kids to look up to still they have their own charm which attracts the best looking girl to Thomas.
I wish Bruce Robinson (the author) was a little bit more mature but still there is no denying of the fact that this is a fantastic book. The language is sometimes a little offensive but again that is part of childhood.

5 out of 5 stars Adrian Mole with an edge!.......2002-07-28

This is another book that took me right back to my own adolescence--although, having been a girl I wan't obsessed with all the same things he is, but you get the idea...I agree that this history is frustrating to read, and over the top, but there is some real poetic truth to it.

Praise for this book include:"Almost every passage of this book hums with particularity and vision. Robinson writes such beautiful prose, he often seems to forget his natural screenwriting gifts altogether" and "There sould be a law against this being called a debut novel. It's far too clever, too assured to be a first attempt" and "it took me straight back to that strange, tangled world of adolesence"
