The reasons behind these statistics vary, but all of the common mistakes of buying and selling a business are covered in this book. Therefore, both owner/sellers and business buyers will be 100% successful in their quest. 5 out of 5 stars Great Overview of the Buying/Selling Process.......2006-02-09

I purchased this book after selling my business, and wish I had had the foresight to buy it earlier. It gives a good overview of the entire process, from both the buyer's and the seller's point of view. You can probably find other books that go into greater detail about topics like business valuation and tax consequences. But this is a good, quick read to get anyone familiar with what to expect during the buy/sell process.

            Book Description

“The innovative essays in this volume . . . demonstrat[e] the potential of the perspective of the affects in a wide range of fields and with a variety of methodological approaches. Some of the essays . . . use fieldwork to investigate the functions of affects—among organized sex workers, health care workers, and in the modeling industry. Others employ the discourses of microbiology, thermodynamics, information sciences, and cinema studies to rethink the body and the affects in terms of technology. Still others explore the affects of trauma in the context of immigration and war. And throughout all the essays run serious theoretical reflections on the powers of the affects and the political possibilities they pose for research and practice.”—Michael Hardt, from the foreword

In the mid-1990s, scholars turned their attention toward the ways that ongoing political, economic, and cultural transformations were changing the realm of the social, specifically that aspect of it described by the notion of affect: pre-individual bodily forces, linked to autonomic responses, which augment or diminish a body’s capacity to act or engage with others. This “affective turn” and the new configurations of bodies, technology, and matter that it reveals, is the subject of this collection of essays. Scholars based in sociology, cultural studies, science studies, and women’s studies illuminate the movement in thought from a psychoanalytically informed criticism of subject identity, representation, and trauma to an engagement with information and affect; from a privileging of the organic body to an exploration of nonorganic life; and from the presumption of equilibrium-seeking closed systems to an engagement with the complexity of open systems under far-from-equilibrium conditions. Taken together, these essays suggest that attending to the affective turn is necessary to theorizing the social.

                      Book Description

The wide gamut of films that turn us on, as judged by the most distinguished group of movie critics in America

National Society of Film Critics dares to go where few mainstream critics have gone before-to the heart of what gets the colored lights going, as they say in A Streetcar Named Desire. Here is their take on the films that quicken their (and our) pulses-an enterprise both risky and risque, an entertaining overview of the most arousing films Hollywood has every produced. But make no mistake about it: This isn't a collection of esoteric "critic's choice" movies. The films reflect individual taste, rubbing against the grain of popular wisdom. And, because of the personal nature of the erotic forces at play, these essays will reveal more about the individual critics than perhaps they have revealed thus far to their readers.

The Society is a world-renowned, marquee-name organization embracing some of America's most distinguished critics, more than forty writers who have followings nationally as well as devoted local constituencies in such major cities as New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Boston, Philadelphia, Atlanta, and Minneapolis. Yes, The X List will have something for every lover of film-and for every lover.

THE X LIST: THE NATIONAL SOCIETY OF FILM CRITICS' GUIDE TO THE MOVIES THAT TURN US ON is an outstanding guide for any movie buff: primarily those 'x' rated. There's a lot of fluff and junk in the soft-core porn industry, as any viewer of the genre might now: THE X LIST is thus more important to such viewers than your ordinary movie list, as X films typically are not much discussed in general circles. Chosen for feature are erotic movies which have 'changed, challenged, enhanced or perverted' America's take on eroticism. Listings aren't just one-paragraph descriptions: they go into quite some depth and critical detail on what makes the film notable or erotic.

I was Jamie's teacher when he wrote this book. I thought interested readers may want to know what Jamie is doing today. I met his mom in May, l999 and she reported that Jamie is farming. He is married and has two children who will attend the same school district that Jamie attended. Jamie's stepfather died a few years ago. When the book was first published, Jamie and I heard from students and teachers all over the United States. It was a fun time for everyone involved. Thanks for your attention to these comments.

                            Book Description

Atmospheric chemistry is one of the fastest growing fields in the earth sciences. Until now, however, there has been no book designed to help students capture the essence of the subject in a brief course of study. Daniel Jacob, a leading researcher and teacher in the field, addresses that problem by presenting the first textbook on atmospheric chemistry for a one-semester course. Based on the approach he developed in his class at Harvard, Jacob introduces students in clear and concise chapters to the fundamentals as well as the latest ideas and findings in the field.

Jacob's aim is to show students how to use basic principles of physics and chemistry to describe a complex system such as the atmosphere. He also seeks to give students an overview of the current state of research and the work that led to this point. Jacob begins with atmospheric structure, design of simple models, atmospheric transport, and the continuity equation, and continues with geochemical cycles, the greenhouse effect, aerosols, stratospheric ozone, the oxidizing power of the atmosphere, smog, and acid rain. Each chapter concludes with a problem set based on recent scientific literature. This is a novel approach to problem-set writing, and one that successfully introduces students to the prevailing issues.

This is a major contribution to a growing area of study and will be welcomed enthusiastically by students and teachers alike.

                            4 out of 5 stars good introduction.......2001-05-21

I took Prof. Jacob's undergraduate class in atmospheric chemistry at Harvard. Not surprisingly, this was the book we used. Overall it is well written and a good introduction to the field, and is relatively inexpensive for a textbook.

As the other reviewer pointed out, the exercises are very good. Occasionally the book saves critical issues for the exercises which depending on your point of view could be a weakness. Also, some of the chapters are lacking in depth: the book is adopted from his lecture notes and indeed it often reads as a set of notes and is brief and terse in some parts.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent addition to the field.......2000-01-10

I used Prof. Jacob's pre-press web edition of this book to teach 20+ bachelor's students Atmospheric Chemistry at the University of Copenhagen during the fall of 1999. I have found it difficult to find an appropriate introductory level text for this class, and have usually been borrowing material for the class from four or five other books. The book is well written and a pleasure to read, but the real treat are the problems at the end of each chapter. Jacob has scoured the literature and illustrates important points in each chapter using recent advances in the field. The students and their instructor learned a great deal from the author's insightful choice of topics. The book reflects the author's perspective of the field, and is longer on atmospheric physics and shorter on chemistry than the title implies. I would have liked more information on aerosols, and the students definitely would have liked more introductory material on chemistry. Overall I would recommend this book to professionals interested in learning more about global warming or ozone depletion, and to teachers looking for a good book for bachelors or new graduate students.

                            Book Description

Atmospheric chemistry has been the focus of much research activity in recent years, and there is now heightened public awareness of the environmental issues in which it plays a part. In a clear, readable style, this important book looks at the insights and interpretations afforded by the research, and places in context the exciting, dramatic, and sometimes disturbing findings. Like its highly successful predecessor, this new edition lays down the principles of atmospheric chemistry and provides the necessary background for more detailed study. The text has been thoroughly revised and expanded throughout to take into account recent advances in atmospheric science that include a host of new atmospheric measurements, extended laboratory experiments, ever more sophisticated models, and ingenious interpretations of the phenomena. Heterogeneous processes are now known to be of great significance in the chemistry of the Earth's atmosphere, and new sections of the book discuss the influence of such processes on both the stratosphere and the troposphere. A major eruption, that of Mount Pinatubo, has highlighted how volcanoes can influence 'natural' atmospheric chemistry, and the opportunity is taken to examine the effects of the gases and particles produced in such eruptions. The startling discovery of the 'Antarctic ozone hole' has now been matched by observations of similar ozone losses in the Arctic; both phenomena are explored in more depth than before, and the whole question of trends in stratospheric ozone concentrations is updated. New topics in tropospheric chemistry that are discussed in this edition for the first time include the atmospheric chemistry of biogenic hydrocarbons, of aromatic compounds, and of halogens and halogen-containing species. Several aspects have been added to the examination of air pollution, including the effects of biomass burning. Rapid changes in the composition of the Earth's atmosphere, apparently a result of man's activities, are apparently even having an effect on global climate, and recent assessments of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change are presented in this context. Air transport continues to expand, and the influence of aircraft on atmospheric chemistry and, indeed, on climate has excited interest that is explained here. Moving away from Earth, information gathered by the Voyager, Galileo, and other space missions, which have provided a new understanding of the atmosphere of the planets other than our own, is also discussed and brought up to date. This book does not attempt to suggest answers to the environmental problems facing us, but it lays the foundations for the study of atmospheric chemistry on which rational decisions will need to be based. A multidisciplinary approach is taken throughout in order to highlight the interplay between the atmosphere of a planet and other parts of the environment. This feature makes the book full of interest for chemists, physicists, biologists, and other scientists alike, and accessible to all of them. Readers will find the book an excellent introduction to an exciting topic, and a fascinating source of information about a part of science that is proving to be of key importance.

I read this book as part of a class I took on environmental chemistry. It is thorough and extensive in the subject matter it covers, and was not too difficult to read. Alas, I find the subject matter boring before reading this book, and left with my opinions unchanged.

Our subject is, of course, nothing more than applied physics and chemistry. But in addition to those basic sciences the student of planetary atmospheres needs an overview of atmospheric structure and physical processes as presently understood. This book is intended to help fill that need for both graduate students and research scientists. Although the approach is mainly theoretical, very little basic physics is developed here. Material that is standard fare in third- and fourth-year physics courses is simply absorbed where needed.

Despite factoring in countless natural, biological, and industrial processes, fixed attention on the singular attributes and behavior of fluids near or at interfaces has not received enough attention in the surface science literature. Liquid Interfacial Systems assembles and analyzes concepts and findings as an inclusive summation of fluid-fluid interfacial phenomena. This book covers excitation, stabilization, and suppression of instability at liquid interfaces. From the influential original research and scholarship of leaders in the discipline comes a volume to impart and explain definitions, scales, governing equations, and boundary conditions used in liquid interfacial system research.

                                      Description:
A fully mechanized set-up was built for the experimental determination of bi-dimensional dispersion with high spatial resolution (2400@mm^2). Gravitational and wall effects in a single stream were evaluated by using time-based sampling and a micro-flow cell. Vertical upward and downward flows as well as horizontal flows were investigated. Ethylene glycol (MEG) and Rhodamine B in MEG were used as carrier and sample solutions, respectively. Longitudinal profiles were obtained by laser induced total fluorescence (LIF) at up to 19 transversal sites and combined to generate high-resolution bi-dimensional profiles. A two frontal maxima pattern was observed for all flows. The volumetric fraction of RB shape was highly stretched for downward flow and there was high asymmetry for horizontal flow. The sensitivity of three dispersion parameters was evaluated: maximum peak value, peak half-width at half-height, and peak area. Data modeling showed that the tanks-in-series was more sensitive to wall effects, had good adjustment with only one tank for upward and horizontal flow and needed two tanks for downward flow which was attributed to the latter having higher dispersion. A black box empirical modeling described better the gravitational effect and allowed to identify a parameter sensitive to upward and downward flow as well as hinting to two inner streams within the horizontal flow. It also pointed to a wall dispersion contribution of twice that of the liquid-liquid dispersion.

                                        Description:
Interfacial area was measured in a helicoidal reactor for the two-phase gas-liquid flow. Measurements were accomplished using the method of oxygen chemical absorption in alkaline solutions of Na"2S"2O"4. The process parameters were varied within the following ranges: rotational speed of impeller from 0 to 2900rpm; liquid mass flux from 2.7 to 100kg/(m^2s); volumetric flow ratio of gas and liquid from 0.125 to 1; ratio of impeller diameter to the outer reactor diameter from 0.54 to 0.92. Large values of the interfacial area were found. It was established that they depend mainly on the rotational speed of the rotor and to much less extent on the axial flow velocity. A correlation between changes in the interfacial area and changes in the flow structure within the reactor was also observed.

A collection of tales about "Runyonesque" characters in New Orleans, the author's style is reminiscent of Mark Twain. You might have to look up a few big words (like I did) and at times the laughs get bogged-down in the language. In addition to the title character, you will meet Johnny the Fox Cox, Suicide Simon, Roger the Lodger and Brother Bob Harrington, the self-proclaimed "Chaplain of Bourbon Street." Jacobs was a columnist with the Times-Picayune and knew many of these people, which also makes the book of interest to anyone studying New Orleans history.
