This book is devoted to investment decision-making under uncertainty. The book covers three basic approaches to this process: The stochastic dominance approach; the mean-variance approach; and the non-expected utility approach, focusing on prospect theory and its modified version, cumulative prospect theory.

These approaches are discussed and compared in this book. In addition, this volume examines cases in which stochastic dominance rules coincide with the mean-variance rule and cases in which contradictions between these two approaches may occur. It then discusses the relationship between stochastic dominance rules and prospect theory, and establishes a new investment decision rule which combines the two and which we call prospect stochastic dominance. Although all three approaches are discussed, most of the book is devoted to the stochastic dominance paradigm.

It is probably the best book about molecular vibrations, cited in many other books.
It treats complex arguments with rigour but at the same time it is able to explain them clearly.

In this one, Wilson writes definitively, math/scientifically, and with sincerity of purpose. Don't get confused by the word 'theory.' There's as much math in here as Born and Wolf's P of O. The only diffenrence is Wilson's is much more algebra-based. The mathematics (i.e. isomorphs) is 'taught', without breaking the flow, and is not assumed that you know the stuff already--- or can find it somewhere else. This book stands out because there is more science in here than names of scientists, and his references are for real. I would also say it was unique because books with titles like 'Molecular Vibrations' are usually skipped over for titles like 'mechanics' or 'quantum theory.' Spectroscopy was a major advancement in science, and it is good to see it skillfully treated with enlightening clarity.

A MUST HAVE for those dealing with B matrix methods.......2000-12-29

This is the original work by E.B.Wilson where the G and F matrix formalism is presented. The G matrix, related to kinetic vibrational energy is built uppon the elements of the B matrix defined from "internal coordinates". Many quantum chemistry software packages use this exact methodology to build normal coordinates. For those working on Quantum Chem Molecular Orbital calculations, this book is a must.

1955 classic.......2000-06-28

Reissue of original, which was published in 1955, in the pre-computer age. Solid QM description of vibrating polyatomic molecules, and their interaction with EM radiation. The authors exploit group theory (molecular symmetry) to reduce the calculational work as much as possible. Good introduction to the use of finite groups, e.g. how to exploit the hexagonal symmetry of the benzene molecule.

In this upper-level text, Professor Tanner introduces the reader to the behavior of electrons in solids, starting with the simplest possible model. Unlike other solid state physics texts, this book does not begin with complex crystallography, but instead builds up from the simplest possible model of a free electron in a box and introduces higher levels of complexity only when the simple model is inadequate. The approach is to introduce the subject through its historical development, and to show how quantum mechanics is necessary for an understanding of the properties of electrons in solids. The author also includes an examination of the consequences of collective behavior in the phenomena of magnetism and superconductivity. Examples and problems are included for practice.

Read this before Ashcroft and Mermin.......2006-01-24

I was a math major as an undergraduate but found myself doing experimental solid state physics in graduate school. I had never had an undergraduate course in solid state and needed something that would allow me to catch up quickly, so I got this book. It is very thin and very accessible. You can read the whole thing and do all the problems in your spare time over the course of a few weeks. Less, if you put your mind to it. The standard textbook for solid state physics, Ashcroft and Mermin, is, in my opinion, a little too long for an introduction if you've never been exposed to the subject before. I'm also not fond of Kittel's undergraduate solid state book. Tanner's is just right. Read this one, then use Ashcroft and Mermin for a reference.

I graduated in 1997 and am teaching now. I recommend Tanner's book to my students, both graduate and undergraduate.

The book starts with the basics of crystallography and quantum mechanics providing a sound mathematical footing for the rest of the text. The next section deals with the microscope itself, describing the various components in terms of the underlying theory. The second half of the book focuses on the dynamical theory of electron scattering in solids including its applications to perfect and defective crystals, electron diffraction and phase contrast techniques. Based on a lecture course given by the author in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, the book is ideal for graduate students as well as researchers new to the field.

Wonderful Introduction to Transmission Electron Microscopy.......2007-02-16

For my taste, this book is the best introduction to Transmission Electron Microscopy that I have read. It is written at a higher level than Williams and Carter. This book is probably best suited to students with a B.S. in Physics. At the very least one should have benefited from a two semester undergraduate course on Modern Physics (including such things as solving the Schrodinger Equation for the Hydrogen atom) before tackling this book. I wish that a book like this had been out thirty years ago when I started learning TEM! This book does a very good job on two-beam theory and has truly wonderful dispersion surface diagrams.

I took Prof. de Graef's class at CMU in 2001, and we used pre-prints of this text. Even in that mostly-finished form, it was excellent. It's only improved now that I have the finished, published form.

Although I found the mathematical formalism that makes up the middle of this book excessive, it is important for people who will be modelling TEM experiments. The remainder of the book, on TEM basics, operation, and image/SADP interpretation, are all excellent.

This book focuses on phonons and electrons, which the student needs to learn first in solid state physics. The required quantum theory and statistical physics are derived from scratch. Systematic in structure and tutorial in style, the treatment is filled with detailed mathematical steps and physical interpretations. This approach ensures a self-sufficient content for easier teaching and learning. The objective is to introduce the concepts of phonons and electrons in a more rigorous and yet clearer way, so that the student does not need to relearn them in more advanced courses. Examples are the transition from lattice vibrations to phonons and from free electrons to energy bands.

The book can be used as the beginning module of a one-year introductory course on solid state physics, and the instructor will have a chance to choose additional topics. Alternatively, it can be taught as a stand-alone text for building the most-needed foundation in just one semester.

Very Readable Account.......2005-08-23

Its a nice little book on phonons and electrons,the chapters are well-laid out,the explanations are good,though some parts like the section on crystal momentum and the associated "normal"and "umklapp" process have been given rather perfunctory physical attributes.At any rate any one looking into transport phenomenon in solids and semiconductors should read it.Chapters 3&4 are the crucial ones of the book.And yes,it provides an excellent launching pad to delve into Ziman's "Electrons and Phonons",this book helped me understand much of Ziman's work as contained in his text and regarded as the one of the best ever on phonons and electrons.The work by Liang-Fu-Lou is certainly worth reading.
