This book addresses the two subjects I dread most - unemployment and financial advice.

This is a tough subject area that I would rather avoid, but the tone of this book made it an easy - and somehow an uplifting - read! The author communicates through a strong, positive and focused voice that offers very practical advice.

It offers both an understanding, empathic ear and an effective game plan! Who couldn't use that?

I strongly recommend the book - for the employed and unemployed -because it will inevitably happen to us all!

This timely book provides essential guidance for surviving the financial crisis of unemployment. With lay off's prevalent across the nation, Ms. Milligan's focused approach to "problem solving" the financial challenges of unemployment can benefit all who take the time to read. The book reads easily, and the "My Best Advice" sections provide succinct guidance. The tone of the book acknowledges the pain and despair which accompany being "suddenly unemployed", but firmly guides the reader towards the future and provides the tools necessary to make informed decisions about all aspects of one's personal finances along the way.

How to "heal" dysfunctional supply chains.......2007-04-12

As Lawton Robert Burns explains so well in the Foreword, "This book provides the first systematic treatment of [the] `thorny issue' of managing the supplies that medical professionals such as physicians and nurses order and use in treating patients], covering both external and internal management of the hospital's supply chain. Appropriate, the book focuses on the managerial processes that need to be managed: sourcing, purchasing, distribution, value analysis, and standardization. The book not only provides a rich conceptual framework for managing these processes, but also supplements the authors' conceptual work with rich studies of hospitals and health systems that have implemented process improvements in these areas."

Eugene Schneller and Larry Smeltzer carefully organize their material within eight chapters which begin with "Framing the Repositioning Management of the Health Care Supply Chain" and conclude with "Building Supply Chain Leadership and Resources for the Future." I mention these "book-end" chapter titles because they correctly indicate that (a) Schneller and Smeltzer see all manner of significant insufficiencies in the strategic management of most health care supply chains but that (b) what they recommend in this volume should not be viewed as a "silver bullet"; on the contrary, any supply chain must be constantly and rigorously evaluated and, when necessary, re-framed and perhaps even re-positioned. Although supply chains such as those in health care inevitably have a "weak link" (if not several), that will not necessarily result in a total breakdown system wide. However, if links are viewed as business relationships, it is highly desirable to have strong ones...especially during difficult times as when sudden and substantial cost increases occur.

In this context, I am reminded of a valuable insight that Patrick Lencioni provides in one of his business narratives, Silos, Politics and Turf Wars. Here's the situation. The main character, Jude Cousins, is a talented, energetic, and ambitious young marketing executive who, with his wife Teresa's support and encouragement, decides to leave his secure job after the company is purchased by a competitor. He establishes an independent consulting practice and almost immediately obtains three clients: The Madison Hotel (San Francisco's oldest, largest, and most prestigious independent hotel), JMJ Fitness Machines (a manufacturer of high-end consumer and institutional exercise equipment), and Children's Hospital of Sacramento. Over time, Cousins struggles without much success to help his clients to improve communication, cooperation, and (especially) collaboration between and among their senior-level executives. Because this is a business narrative, complete with a plot and cast of characters, its storyline builds to a climax that, in this instance, is the valuable insight to which I referred earlier. Cousins has an epiphany: He realizes that the ER at Children's Hospital offers an almost ideal model for efficient, effective, and productive teamwork. Everyone involved must concentrate entirely on the given medical crisis that may have life-or-death implications. There is no time for "silos, politics and turf wars."

It will be interesting to observe the extent to which supply chains in health care change in months and years to come. What will the next paradigm consist of? Schneller and Smeltzer make no predictions, although they correctly suggest that communication, cooperation, and (especially) collaboration will become progressively more important if both the quality and costs of health care are to be managed properly.

Those who share my high regard for this volume are urged to check out two books which Burns and his Wharton colleagues have written: The Business of Healthcare Innovation and The Health Care Value Chain: Producers, Purchasers, and Providers. Also Michael E. Porter and Elizabeth Olmsted Teisberg's Redefining Health Care: Creating Value-Based Competition on Results, Regina E. Herzlinger's Consumer-Driven Health Care: Implications for Providers, Payers, and Policy-Makers, Shoshanah Cohen and Joseph Roussel`s Strategic Supply Chain Management: The 5 Disciplines for Top Performance, and Supply Chain Excellence: A Handbook for Dramatic Improvement Using the SCOR [Supply Chain Operations Reference] Model co-authored by Peter Bolstorff and Robert Rosenbaum.

One of the best books for the history of the Farmall line!.......2001-10-03

Ralph Sanders does an excellent job of explaining the history of the Farmall from the invention of the reaper all the way to the Tenneco buyout of International Harvester. Excellent pictures, useful and historical text, and wonderful explainations of every tractor pictured. Pictured tractors have some of the best restorations that I have ever seen! A great book for anyone interested in the history of the Farmall line of tractors and International Harvester Company.

This is the best book I've seen on the subject of International tractors. It has a good amount of detail of the history of the various companies and an excellent mix of old and new photos.

How to win (or not win) the Nobel Prize.......2002-12-02

Professor István Hargittai, a Hungarian research chemist, has written a beautiful book about the myths and stories surrounding the Nobel Prizes for physics (P), chemistry (C), and medicine or physiology (M). Starting from the somewhat vague Nobel's Will, written in 1895, he goes on to analyze various aspects of the organization of the Nobel Foundation, national politics associated to the assignment of the prize, and the common characteristics of the winners. Many nobelists have carried out scientific experiments during their childhood while others have followed the steps of a great mentor, in some case himself a winner. Surprising for us is the kind of hardships (i.e., persecutions, illnesses, poverty, etc.) that many nobelists have faced during the initial steps of their scientific careers. Perhaps these hardships acted as catalysts in persuing one's goals. Working either in a stimulating and creative environment (for example, the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge produced a lot of winners) or in a research field different from that of origin may represent additional ingredients for success. A final (12-th) chapter is dedicated to the non-winners, i.e. top level scientists that didn't receive the prize in spite of their fundamental discoveries and contributions to science. Among them we find the russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev (Periodic Table of the Elements), the botanist Michael Tsweet (discoverer of chromatography), Oswald Avery (the proposer that DNA, not proteins, is the genetic material), Leo Szilard (physicist and molecular biologist), Arnold Sommerfeld (one of the founders of quantum mechanics), the chemist G.N. Lewis (important contributor to the fields of chemical thermodynamics and the electronic structure of molecules), and Lise Meitner (co-discoverer - with Otto Hahn - of nuclear fission), just to cite some examples. An important name missing here is that of John von Neumann, the Hungarian-born mathematical physichist that, in addition to having been a child prodigy, contributed greatly in the fields of set theory, algebra, quantum mechanics, and computer science. The reader interested in the remaining Nobel Prizes (Literature, Peace, Economics) may complement this book with Burton Feldman's "The Nobel Prize : A History of Genius, Controversy and Prestige".

Must Have Book to Understand Asteroid Impact Consequences.......2007-04-20

The Bobrowsky edited book is an excellent must-read book for anyone conducting serious intellectual inquiry into a potential asteroid impact with the Earth. The articles are a wonderful collection on a very serious topic. The reader gains multiple insights on the varied interdisciplinary issues related to asteroids. This is a fine contribution to the current state of knowledge. The book would make for an excellent university text in either astronomy or public policy agenda-setting and formulation. I highly recommend the investment in this book if you have serious interest in the history of asteroid/comet impacts as well as what humans may do to mitigate such a disaster in the future. I believe this book to be the best I have read on the topic of asteroids impacts. I am pleased to have added it to my personal library.

During the past decade, work on cool-water carbonates has expanded to become a mainstream research area. Studies on modern and Quaternary deposits will continue to be important; however, there is increasing momentum towards unravelling sediment processes, biotasediment interactions and diagenetic products in Cenozoic and older cool-water carbonates. Many contributions in this book document Cenozoic and Quaternary carbonates from landlocked (microtidal) water-bodies. These carbonates display important differences in biota and fabric distributions when compared with world ocean examples. Consequently, the scientific community is now better placed to reinterpret pre-Tertiary carbonates where there is a suspicion that they have developed under microtidal conditions. Some papers in the book provide new approaches to interpreting environmental change within macrotidal regimes and others lay firm foundations for future cool-water carbonate diagenetic research. The aim of the book is to illustrate recent international contributions to cool-water carbonates research, with an emphasis on Neogene and Recent case studies. Contributions are divided into three sections: microtidal carbonates from the Mediterranean realm; macrotidal examples from New Zealand, Australia and Mexico; and early diagenetic fabrics.

Manganese mineralization is diverse in occurrence, origin, mineralogy and geochemistry. These variations reflect differences in the processes of formation and depositional environments, which in turn are a response to changes in the land - ocean - atmosphere system over geological time. As such, manganese deposits can act as markers of major events in the dynamic evolution of the Earth's surface. Modern manganese accumulations provide insights into key factors controlling manganese deposition that cannot readily be determined from examination of ancient ores. A knowledge of oceanic currents, ocean chemistry or small-scale variation in physicochemcal patterns of recent basins, for example, may extend our understanding of depositional processes in the past. Equally, the study of Precambrian deposits not only elucidates ancient mechanisms of manganese metallogenesis, but also helps to unravel the impact of comprehensive environmental changes on metal deposition on a scale not realised in younger geological times. The volume includes a review of the range of terrestrial Mn deposits and their relative abundance through geological time. This is followed by six papers on Precambrian deposits that cover the manner in which Mn mineralization reflects changes in planetary and environmentalchemistry. Ten papers on Cenozoic deposits show the wide diversity of genetic types of the younger deposits, from nodules, crusts and stratabound layers, todeposits precipitated from hydrothermal fluids. Five papers in the last section consider the geochemistry and mineralogy of Mn deposits. Experimental and modelling approaches to Mn geochemistry and mineralogy can further aid our understanding of the formational and depositional processes involved and thereby ourinterpretation of deposit metallogenesis.

Submarine slopes provide the critical link between shallow-water and deep-water sedimentary environments. They accumulate a sensitive record of sediment supply, accommodation creation/destruction, and tectonic processes during basin filling. There is a complex stratigraphic response to the interplay between parameters that control the evolution of submarine slope systems, e.g. slope gradient, topographic complexity, sediment flux and calibre, base-level change, tectonic setting, and post-depositional sediment remobilization processes. The increased understanding of submarine slope systems has been driven partly by the discovery of large hydrocarbon fields in morphologically complex slope settings, such as the Gulf of Mexico and offshore West Africa, and has led to detailed case studies and improved generic models for their evolution.

Since Karl Pearson wrote his paper on spurious correlation in 1897, a lot has been said about the statistical analysis of compositional data, mainly by geologists such as Felix Chayes. The solution appeared in the 1980s, when John Aitchison proposed to use logratios. Since then, the approach has seen a great expansion, mainly building on the idea of the 'natural geometry' of the sample space. Statistics is expected to give sense to our perception of the natural scale of the data, and this is made possible for compositional data using logratios. This publication will be a milestone in this process. This book will be of interest to geologists using statistical methods. It includes the intuitive justification of the methodology, convincing through case studies and presenting user-friendly software, which includes a section for those who need to see the proof of the mathematical consistency of the methods used.

In the first years after the discovery of radioactivity it became clear that nuclear physics was, by excellence, the science of small quantum systems. Between the fifties and the eighties nuclear physics and elementary particles physics lived their own lives, without much interaction. During this period the basic concepts were defined. Recently, contrary to the specialization law often observed in science, the overlap between nuclear and elementary particle physics has become somewhat blurred.

This Les Houches Summer School was set up with the aim of fighting off the excessive specialization evident in many international meetings, and return to the roots. The twofold challenge of setting up a fruitful exchange between experimentalists and theorists in the first place, and between nuclear and hadronic matter physicists in the second place was successfully met.

The volume presents high quality, up-to-date reviews starting with an account of the birth and first developments of nuclear physics. Further chapters discuss the description of the nuclear structure, the physics of nuclei at very high spin, the existence of super-heavy nuclei as a consequence of shell structure, liquid-gas transition, including both a description and a review of the experimental situation.

Other topics dealt with include the interactions between moderately relativistic heavy ions, the concept of a nucleon dressed by a cloud of pions, the presence of pions in the nucleus, the subnucleonic phenomena in nuclei and quark-gluons deconfinement transition, both theoretical and experimental aspects. Nuclear physics continues to influence many other fields, such as astrophysics, and is also inspired by these same fields. This cross-fertilisation is illustrated by the treatment of neutron stars in one of the final chapters. The last chapter provides an overview of a recent development in which particle and nuclear physicists have cooperated to revitalize an alternative method for nuclear energy production associating high energy production accelerators and sub-critical neutron multiplying assemblies.
