An up-to-date description of progress and current problems with the gravitational constant, both in terms of generalized gravitational theories and experiments either in the laboratory, using Casimir force measurements, or in space at solar system distances and in cosmological observations.
Contributions cover different aspects of the state and prediction of unified theories of the physical interactions including gravitation as a cardinal link, the role of experimental gravitation and observational cosmology in discriminating between them, the problem of the precise measurement and stability of fundamental physical constants in space and time, and the gravitational constant in particular.
Recent advances discussed include unified and scalar-tensor theories, theories in diverse dimensions and their observational windows, gravitational experiments in space, rotational and torsional effects in gravity, basic problems in cosmology, early universe as an arena for testing unified models, and big bang nucleosynthesis.

Addressing graduate students and researchers, this book gives a very detailed theoretical and computational description of multiple scattering in solid matter. Particular emphasis is placed on solids with reduced dimensions, on full potential approaches and on relativistic treatments. For the first time approaches such as the screened Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method are reviewed, considering all formal steps such as single-site scattering, structure constants and screening transformations, and also the numerical point of view. Furthermore, a very general approach is presented for solving the Poisson equation, needed within density functional theory in order to achieve self-consistency. Special chapters are devoted to the Coherent Potential Approximation and to the Embedded Cluster Method, used, for example, for describing nanostructured matter in real space. In a final chapter, physical properties related to the (single-particle) Green's function, such as magnetic anisotropies, interlayer exchange coupling, electric and magneto-optical transport and spin-waves, serve to illustrate the usefulness of the methods described.

My favorite childhood read.......2005-02-17

I, too, discovered this book on my Granny's bookshelf. It had been my mother's and aunt's, and when it came time for our generation to divide up all of our grandmother's belongings, my female cousins and I had a tug-of-war over who would get it to give to our own daughters. What a delight to see that it is still available!
The female characters are strong and charismatic, the Hawaiian atmosphere is intoxicating, and the plot is completely gripping. The only caution I would extend to parents is to plan a conversation with your child about the paternalistic (some might say racist) treatment of the Hawaiian employees of the ranch. I actually found it to be a great "teachable moment" for my girls, and it provoked many good conversations as they read the book.

My Childhood Favorite!.......2001-07-07

I was given this book when I was about eleven by my grandmother, who had read and loved it when she was a young girl! Since then, I have read it many times over, even into my adulthood! I am now a teacher of eleven-year-olds, and was thrilled to find that I could still order Pam's Paradise Ranch for my classroom library! I have spent many hours dreaming of being young Pam, riding my horse across the slopes of Maui. I hope the book generates similar dreams in my students, as they experience Pam' Paradise Ranch for themselves.

This "sweeping saga" for girls has it all........1999-02-19

As a child I was an obsessive reader, preferably books with horses, mysteries and exotic locations. "Pam's Paradise Ranch" stands out as the most exciting, evocative and satisfying novel of all, and I read it many times. The basic story, of a fearful and repressed city girl who moves to Hawaii to live with her aunt and girl cousin, has so much atmosphere and Hawaiian lore, told in everyday events. The girl's discovery of nature and freedom, and of being loved for the first time, are very touching. And, even though I read it in the 60's before feminism was even a word, the strongest characters are the aunt and cousin. Politically correct, even then! A truly great book for all girls ages 7 to 15.

Informative study of ranch life in Paradise Valley, Nevada.......2003-06-10

This 95-page publication is an informative and fascinating catalogue book published in conjunction with a Smithsonian exhibition at the National Museum of History and Technology in 1980-81. Its subject is ranchlife in Paradise Valley, Nevada, north of Winnemucca and near the Oregon border. First settled by California farmer/ranchers in the 1860s, the region's development was influenced by the Spanish colonial agricultural practices of California, and its "cowboys" have traditionally been known as "buckaroos," an anglicized rendering of the Spanish "vaquero."

Contents of the book are based on field research by the American Folklife Center of the Library of Congress. It covers history of the region and then focuses on cowboy life and culture, including clothing, bunkhouses, and branding irons. The book contains many black and white photographs, both vintage and contemporary. Several are two-page spreads. There is also a list of 244 artifacts from the exhibition, with photos of many of them....

As of this writing...this wonderful book is out of print. If you can find a copy, it's well worth having.
