In the world of technology, one of the best-known maxims is Moore's Law, a 1965 prediction by the cofounder of Intel, which states that computer chips will double in speed and power every 18 months. For many, Moore's Law has come to symbolize the idea that all aspects of technology--from medicine to weather prediction--will continue to move forward at the startling rates we've grown used to. In Defying the Market, investment guru Stephen Leeb presents a different interpretation. He notes that people back in the 1960s continued smoking, even when they knew it would make them sick, because they felt sure science would find a cure for cancer by the time they got it. As we all know, the cure hasn't been found, and Deeb feels that most technological innovation has in fact ground to a halt. Science, he argues, is limited by the fact it depends on computers to make new discoveries. But we can't really make computers any smarter--only cheaper and faster.

In addition to a technological slowdown, Leeb also sees an unabating demand for worldwide economic growth. Put these two phenomena together, and you've got inflation, which is not entirely bad news for investors. He predicts that oil and gold stocks will rise from the modest positions they've held in the low-inflation '90s; that computer stocks like Dell and Gateway will falter because, as prices rise, users won't feel a need to pay for incremental improvements in speed and whiz-bangery; and that while only the largest tech companies--such as Microsoft and Cisco--will continue to profit, food companies such as Pioneer Hi-Bred and tractor maker Deere Co. are better bets.

This is one of the most contrarian, challenging books an investor can read. One can imagine the rebuttals pouring in from the scientific, economic, and investment worlds. But if he's right, those who heed Leeb's advice stand to make more money than a Deere tractor can pull. --Lou Schuler

This book is highly recommended for all investors, as it makes compelling arguments for what the future will be like and where to profit from it. Unfortunately, this future is not bright and rosy as I thought it might be.

The book argues that technology will not continue to increase productivity, which will result in inflation. It shows you how you might capitalize on these trends in the upcoming decade. It includes a model portfolio for conservative and aggressive investors and strategies to help in case of deflation.

The book is well written, easy to understand and hard to put down. It will really make you think.

Though the only negative I see is his recommendation of Enron, and the fact that he doesn't recommend market timing, where his previous book did

According to Stephen and Donna Leeb, technological advances are slowing while global economies are pressured to maintain growth. These factors will combine to create an inflationary environment. Inflation will change investors' strategies. The authors suggest investing in oil stocks, small-cap companies, and a few select large-cap companies. They are intriguing contrarians. They assert that Internet companies are a poor investment, because they believe the Internet won't achieve its promised increase in productivity and efficiency. They warn that overpopulation will create environmental disasters, which investors should prepare for by how they invest. We at getAbstract recommend this thought-provoking advice to investors, though not as their sole source of guidance.

Ambivalent about this book.......2000-02-02

I am somewhat ambivalent about this book. The authors say that there has been no major scientific or technological breakthrough in the last 20 or so years, and yet, fail to pinpoint the reason why technology as an investment sector has done so well in the last decade. To present my own opinion, I think it is because of the immense progress made in *applying* science and technology to real-world problems. I don't think the authors say this anywhere in their book. All they say is that scientific and technological innovation is slowing down. However, they make a good case as to why they think the sector will slow down even more in the coming years.

I am also in agreement with the authors' arguments that as far as investing is concerned, the kind of portfolio that will generate great returns in the next 15 years is going to be something that will look vastly different from the one that generated great returns in the last 15 years. Towards this end, the authors present various portfolios consisting of inflation hedges, deflation hedges, franchises and environmental plays. They also explain in great detail the reasons why an investor should diversify along those lines.

All in all, a very interesting book. I think it will serve as a handy reference for every serious investor during the coming decade or two.

Terrific! Essential reading for any long-term investor........1999-07-19

On the recommendation of a friend, I just finished reading a new book by Stephen and Donna Leeb, Defying The Market. This book is amazing - thought-provoking, original, strongly argued, and exceptionally readable. In relatively few pages it packs in an incredible amount of information about everything from computers to medical research to agricultural trends and somehow makes it all understrandable, interesting, and most important, instantly relevant to my investment needs. The authors' main point is that technological progress is slowing down, while strong worldwide economic growth has become a necessity. These trends - which they argue will lead to, among other things, rising inflation, will affect every kind of investment, and they tell you exactly which investments will benefit and which ones will suffer. The book is terrific! In fact, it is one of those rare books that, after you read it, you feel that you will look at the world differently from that point on. Whatever your feelings about technology, if you invest in the market at all, you should read this book!

Profoundly provocative........1999-07-19

I'm addicted to reading investment books, and I've bought and read hundreds. But I recently finished one that I think is truly special-Defying the Market by Stephen Leeb and Donna Leeb. Although I knew that Stephen Leeb is well-respected investment adviser and money manager, I was skeptical when I saw from the jacket copy that this book argues that technology is slowing down and bases its investment advice on that premise. But the book convinced me that there's a lot to what he says. This is an investment guide that contains no hype, just a lot of solid research and original analysis. As a bonus, it is so readable that even though initially I thought I might find the section on technology and science hard going. I zipped through it. The Leebs aren't trying to impress or fill up pages-they have a real message and it comes across clearly. In fact, this book is a book not just for investors but for everyone that is interested in making sense out of today's world.

Over the past 40 years, world population, the use of modernized farming methods, and farming production have gone up. Modernized farming uses hazardous pesticides. But does it have to? Where are pesticides used? Are there alternatives? And what can be done to replace pesticides with alternative controls?

More than 800 different pesticides are regularly used throughout the world. They're used to protect crop yields from diseases and pests. Just under 4/5 of all pesticides are used outside the United States. The developing countries are the part of the world where companies plan to hugely increase pesticide sales and use.

But pesticides are damaging to the environment. They're not just hazardous to people who make and use them. Scientists keep on studying the effects of pesticides on animals, birds, bugs, other green things, people, places and water. But the chain of cause and effect isn't always easy to prove, show and tell. That's particularly the case when the audience is people making money from pesticide sales and use!

Editor Jules Pretty says alternatives can replace pesticides. Alternatives can be based on bacteria, certain nematodes, fungi or viruses. They can include parasitoids and predators. When tested with 80 crop combinations, alternatives came up with workable results. Crop yields went up acceptably, with cut-back pesticide use and with alternatives.

Pretty says that what's needed are political will, consumer awareness, and market response. But what can change national policies, international conventions, and programs? Pretty says to start on the level of appropriate taxing, education and environmental action. Specifically, for example, taking away subsidies and putting in effect high taxes would make pesticides less affordable. The list of registered pesticides could be reviewed. The most toxic pesticides could be taken off. Less hazardous alternatives could be added. Also, cooperative extension schools could be set up in the field. Agricultural colleges could have their courseload updated to cover alternatives as well as they're already covering pesticides! All three steps would make alternatives better known. Maximum residue limits could be set, checked and enforced. That would cut down the use of pesticides and increase the use of alternatives.

THE PESTICIDE DETOX is a well-organized and -written book. The editor and the contributing writers include helpful charts, examples, graphs and illustrations. There's a good index and set of references. The subject is now. It's dealt with in such a way that the problems are clear. And there are actually workable solutions! What more could a girl ask?

A Very Nice Book of Space Photography.......2002-06-24

Many space photography books have been published that show a wide variety of geological features, ocean currents, cloud structures and human impact on the land, such as Orbit by Jay Apt and the Home Planet by Kevin Kelly. However, due to the restrictions of orbital mechanics associated with Space Shuttle Flights as well as all other US manned space flight, most of the pictures taken by these crews, cover the latitudes between North 45 degrees and South 45 degrees thereby excluding a fair portion of the Earth's landmasses. In this book, the author, using the remote sensing Landsat satellites, shows the reader a variety of Canadian landscapes using quality color photography. I believe that this is the only book to date that deals exclusively with space photography of Canada.

After a brief introduction describing Canada's use of remote sensing, the book presents 48 full-page color pictures highlighting Canadian landforms, farmlands and cities, with accompanying text and its location on a map of Canada. Some typical photographs include: glaciers and glaciated land, impact craters, mountains, farmland, cities, the Great Lakes and the coastal shorelines. I personally found the pictures of the impact craters and the glaciers quite interesting and very impressive. While I'm sure that the author could have presented many more pictures of his country than he did, he has given the reader an excellent overview of the diversity of landscapes in his country and I feel like visiting right now to see first hand what I saw in the book.

If you're tired of all the space photography books that cover primarily the United States, you should be pleasantly surprised with this book that provides some unique remote sensing observations of our neighbor to the north.

The term `soft condensed matter' encompasses a wide range of substances which are neither ordinary solids nor ordinary liquids. They do have vestigial liquid and solid properties, but their character is much more complex and subtle.
