Book Description

Is E-Business Helping You--Or Your Competitors?
E-business is transforming the commercial landscape and completely redefining traditional business assumptions. In an e-nabled world:
· Customers demand personalized, intimate relationships resulting in new levels of transaction simplicity and service value. Companies use the Internet to expand into new markets and grow.
· Products and services are designed for e-sales and customer segmentation. Companies package their most strategic asset--institutional knowledge--and bundle information with products and services to create new value for customers.
· Business processes seamlessly integrate with customers and business partners as companies build value networks, focus on their core competencies, and outsource non-core business components.
· Organizational structures are aligned to clarify internal governance for e-business. Process-oriented measures maximize the worth of information velocity in the value network.
· Systems and technologies utilize the Internet for most interactions between customers and business partners. Rapidly developing and maturing e-business applications make the Internet the place to do business.
· People and culture are transformed as work forces embrace the value of partnering and external relationships and employee knowledge equates to service value.
In Executive's Guide to E-Business: From Tactics to Strategy, PricewaterhouseCoopers professionals present a new model that all executives and managers involved in an e-business undertaking can use to prepare for the challenges of disruptive change, to foster communication and understanding throughout their organizations, and to achieve sustained competitive advantage. 1 out of 5 stars Non-Impressive.......2001-01-30

I felt the entire book was one big sales pitch. It felt like I was sitting in on a sales presentation. Although the authors did a fairly good job of outlining the 4 stages of the e-business panorama, they neglected to provide solid case studies or real life examples. Instead, I kept coming across recurring messages throughout the book; "all businesses will become ebusiness ...focus on your company's core competency, outsource your non-core competence in order to go to market fast...seamless backend application integration"... very basic stuff. If you are already familiar with ebusiness, this book will bore your as it did me after the first 3 chapters.

I like to suggest a more objective book on ebusiness with better tactics and strategies: "e-Business Roadmap for Success" by, Dr. Ravi Kalakota

5 out of 5 stars Deep E-Commerce MasterGuide.......2000-11-25

Aimed at senior executives, `E-Business' offers a mature look at
the competitive e-landscape, business models and e-commerce approaches
based upon 100s of PWC engagements.

The well structured &
illustrated, unreferenced chapters span: a new business model (neither
hierarchical nor discrete steps); channel enhancement (value
propositions for seller and buyers); channel enhancement impacts
(organizations, people, processes and technology); value chain
integration (supply and customer networks); value chain integration
impacts (organizations, people, processes and technology); industry
transformation (physcho or knowco, infrastructure, partnering,
issues); industry transformation impacts (organizations, people,
processes and technology); convergence (speed, strategies);
convergence impacts (organizations, people); managing risk; navigating
change; analytical framework; and a detailed view of e-nabled value
chain.

Strengths include: the great structure, illustrations, tables
and sidebars; the intelligent, thoughtful, deep writing style; the
depth and breath of useful content (for executives to operational
staff); and the frequent useful charts linking business objectives, to
success factors to enablers.

Weakness include: the lack of
references (we must take the authors' words for credibility of
content!); the lack of case study or success story anecdotes to liven
up the sometimes dryness of subject; slightly prescriptive tone; and a
lack of "interactivity" exercises for the reader.

Other
alternatives/companion texts in this area include: May's technical
focus `The Business of E-Commerce' (ISBN 052177698); Hoque's
opinionated `E-Enterprise' (ISBN: 052177487X); Cohan's draft review
of `e-Profit' (ISBN 0814405444); Siegel's glossy brainstorms in
`Futurize Your Enterprize'(0471357634); and Bloor's marketplace
spin in `electronic B@zaar' (ISBN185788258X).

Overall,
definitely one of the better books in this area, just needing more
science/alternative sources, and case studies to support your
e-business change projects/ enterprises.

5 out of 5 stars in numbers... 10/10.......2000-10-17

It's a helpful book with clear insights in the ecommerce revolution. It helps to clarify misunderstood concepts and gives a clever perspective of the e-journey in which every business must go through.

5 out of 5 stars Great Roadmap.......2000-10-07

I am a manager in an e-commerce development firm and bought this book to enhance my ability to deliver better advice to my clients. This book is one of the most helpful that I have purchased. Because it is written by a consulting firm, it addresses all aspects of e-business in a logical, progressive fashion, uses good business school style illustrations and graphs to lay out the landscape and deals with opportunities, risks and rewards in an easy to understand, streetwise fashion

5 out of 5 stars Clear and concise overview of a hot area.......2000-05-26

E-business is a buzzword nowadays. There are many books promoting this new business model, but few are so knowledgeable and clear as this one. It addresses the key issues and the industry transformations with an approach which is at the same time down-to-earth and visionary.

5 out of 5 stars After forty years, still the best short history.......2004-07-17

Even though this book was written forty years ago and there have been many advances in chemistry since then, it remains the best introduction to chemistry available. Isaac Asimov is still the best explainer of science that has ever existed and he was never better than when writing this book. Although Asimov was capable of writing in all areas of science, he was trained as a chemist, so in this case he was writing about the subject that he knew the most about.
The understanding of the elements that led to the modern periodic table did not come easy. There were many false starts and partial truths that were presented, refuted and remodeled. Asimov takes you through all of this historical record, emphasizing that scientific "truth" is an evolutionary process. The "Aha!" moment is a very rare event in science. Most discoveries are the results of months or years of painstaking research and few are definitive. Some of the main advances started as intelligent suppositions that were not verified for decades.
Written at the level of the intelligent high school student, this is the best introduction to the intellectual struggles that forged (literally and figuratively) our current knowledge of chemistry.

5 out of 5 stars A longtime favorite of mine.......2003-12-28

I've had my copy of this since high school. Most of my other books are gone, but I still have this one. It's a very excellent overview of the developments in chemistry, from the early days of discovery, from Lavoisier, to Mendleev, to the Atomic Age. A wonderful book that livens up what can be a very dry subject.

              4 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2001-12-17

A great accompanyment to a high school chemistry course. High school chemistry is so abstract, that one wonders how chemists ever thought to look at the things they studied to develop the field. Asimov explains what concrete problems and concerns led to the development of each important discovery, situating it in terms of what was understood at the time, and making the logic of the field's development clear. Easy enough for the non-scientist, but with lots of material I never learned in my science education. Asimov was a great popularizer!

The processes in a single living cell are akin to that of a city teeming with molecular inhabitants that move, communicate, cooperate, and compete. In this Very Short Introduction, Philip Ball explores the role of the molecule in and around us - how, for example, a single fertilized egg can grow into a multi-celled Mozart, what makes spider's silk insoluble in the morning dew, and how this molecular dynamism is being captured in the laboratory, promising to reinvent chemistry as the central creative science of the century.

My training is in Physics, and I have not had a chance to read-up on Chemistry in a long while. I decided to read this book in order to get a better bird's eye view of what the modern Chemistry is up to these days. As such, this book was a great introduction, and brought me up to speed with some of the more recent developments. Thanks to this book and some other info I got, I was able to piece things together and figure out what some of the more advanced research in the conventional explosives is all about.

I find this a very interesting book for those who have any interest in the history of Chemistry. The same author also have a serie of books about the same subject- named The History of Chemistry - but this is to big and to extensive for one that just whants to learn something about the history of chemistry. This is a smalest and simplest book to the ones that are now starting to study the history of chemistry. The book covers the history of chemistry since the early chemistry and alchemy and allows you to learn lots of interesting things about the begginings of chemistry.

                  Book Description

Adam Parkes investigates the literary and cultural implications of the censorship encountered by several modern novelists in the early twentieth century. He situates modernism in the context of this censorship, examining the relations between such authors as D.H. Lawrence, James Joyce, Radclyffe Hall, and Virginia Woolf and the public controversies generated by their fictional explorations of modern sexual themes. These authors located "obscenity" at the level of stylistic and formal experiment. The Rainbow, Lady Chatterley's Lover, Ulysses, and Orlando dramatized problems of sexuality and expression in ways that subverted the moral, political, and aesthetic premises on which their censors operated. In showing how modernism evolved within a culture of censorship, Modernism and the Theater of Censorship suggests that modern novelists, while shaped by their culture, attempted to reshape it.

                      Book Description

By 1945, the European continent, which in 1900 appeared increasingly prosperous, reasonably ordered, and increasingly civilised, had torn itself apart. On the way, its societies had suffered inflations and depressions, vicious dictatorships, and the most destructive wars in modern history. This book provides a thought-provoking and wide-ranging history of the whole of Europe in this period. Six lively and stimulating chapters have been written especially for this volume. They focus in turn on political, economic, social, and cultural aspects of the period, as well as international relations within Europe and with the wider world. Particular care is taken to integrate developments in southern and eastern Europe (including the USSR) into the more familiar story of what happened in western and central Europe.

                        Book Description

It is said that behind every successful man there stands a devoted and capable woman. The three famous chemists Perkin, Kipping and their collaborator Lapworth married three sisters: Mina, Lily, and Kathleen Holland. The three Holland sisters kept their husbands in close and very productive collaboration throughout their lives, thereby greatly increasing their scientific output. They functioned as a productive scientific family. However, the life and work of the men is thoroughly documented, but little is known about their wives. Professor Eugene G. Rochow, a world-renowned scientist, wrote this biographical historical novel with the help of a grandson, Dr. Brian Kipping. Professor Rochow did not intend to write a bare-bones biography. He took care to make the book factually accurate. Wherever there are no facts, he has not hesitated to flesh out the account with imagination and actual experience of others in order to make the text more readable.

                            Book Description

In Against the Tide: An Autobiographical Account of a Professional Outsider, Leslie Woods relates the fascinating story of his life from fisherman's son in New Zealand to head of the Mathematical Institute at the University of Oxford. After starting at a trade school, he won a scholarship to a university, then joined the RNZAF, and later became a fighter pilot in the Pacific. Woods then won a Rhodes scholarship to Merton College in Oxford after WWII. Following several years of research in aerodynamics, he became a professor of engineering at the University of New South Wales. He also had a fellowship with Oxford's Balliol College and had a consultancy at Culham Laboratory where he researched the theory of magnetically confined hot plasmas. In 1970, Woods became a professor of plasma theory yet became disillusioned with the fusion energy project, which he believes survived on exaggerated claims of progress. Besides recounting his history, Woods explains why magnetic fusion has failed to succeed and outlines the philosophy of science to which he subscribes. He writes frankly about both his successes and failures and finishes with an account of his taking up gliding at the age of 74.

4 out of 5 stars Not a typical academic autobiography.......2004-07-02

Woods gives us an engaging narrative of his life. From what is undoubtedly a vanished lifestyle in a fishing family in New Zealand before World War 2, to air combat over the Pacific during that war, and then the decades afterwards in academia.

Many readers may find his descriptions of the war to be the most interesting sections. Not your typical autobiography of an academic!

He became quite an expect on plasma research. But in this field, funding at Oxford, or indeed anywhere in Britain, was sparse, compared to the Americans and Russians. Early plasma research was small scale. But as efforts grew to scale up the densities and temperatures, so too did the funding requirements rise. It must have been a continual source of frustration to him.

                            Book Description

The trouble all started when that Yankee playwright Anton O’Masia came into town. He hooked up with old Duke Forberry in Forberry’s latest attempt to turn rust into gold. Duke had bought the old Ritz Theatre and planned to open up competition against the Fountain of Youth Theatre, you see. Well, that Yankee writer wrote this musical called “Antichrist, Superstar!” and Forberry put it on. You can just imagine how a play with that title went over down here in the South. It didn’t take long for Rev. Matthew Schaffner to get some protestors picketing up and down in front of the theatre. They were led by that John Elway lookalike Tony Truwiss. Like Anton said, that boy could eat corn off the cob through a football facemask. Tony sure did know how to put on a protest, though. He had Schaffner’s older daughter Beth with him and that pretty little Erica Withershins, too. She’s actually the one who got everything started by going to Rev. Schaffner and telling him about the play in the first place. A lot of people figured she did it to get even with her ex-best friend Callie Pygusse, who was the star of the play. (Not to mention sleeping with her director, Anton). Considering how much things got out of hand and we started making the national news, it’s actually a surprisingly funny story. When I got the idea to make a book out of it, it was already the most exciting thing to happen to our little town in years. And that was well before Callie took off her clothes onstage and Beth’s sister Mary revealed Pastor Schaffner’s big secret and we all found out the shocking truth about Erica.

                            5 out of 5 stars Guy's got a real problem with phoniness........2000-11-16

I accidentally came across this book while surfing around A.C one night. It sounded pretty interesting from the title and the little synopsis and the price was right. I'm very glad I bought this book. Mr. Sexton obviously has problems with organized religion and I think that's easy to get from the title alone. But he's fair. He's not too happy with organized theatre, I am willing to bet. Neither side comes off as anything like heroes or villains. He has written three dimensional characters and placed them in a believable setting. I was hooked from the first couple of chapters, wanting to know how everything turned out. I was quite surprised along the way. There are a few plot twists that I won't divulge that make this on a par with the Crying Game or Fight Club in terms of things coming from out of nowhere. But then when you reread it--and you will--you realize how he must've have plotted this down to a science. Hard to keep up with this many characters as a writer and this appears to be only the second novel he ever wrote--can't wait to read his first one--but he's very professional in keeping the characters together and yes: Things all do come together for an explosive finale. One note of caution: The very last chapter of the book may leave you with a bad taste in your mouth the first time you read it. These are not lovable characters. But they are representative of the real world. Buy it. It's cheap and it's good.

4 out of 5 stars Funny satire about real life problems........2000-05-31

Frankly, I thought this book was a hoot. You will recognize characters and incidents in this book that may not be exactly what happened in real life, but is close enough. Obviously, Mr. Sexton is a proponent of First Amendment rights and, also obviously, he is on the side of the artists in this book. However, I don't think he shrinks from showing the flaws of both sides of the arguments. Actually, there's really only maybe one or two characters in this book that totally get our sympathy but many of those we may not like we won't soon forget. I'd love to see Robert Altman direct this as a movie.
