Great book for women new to the financial world!.......2007-01-01

I really enjoyed reading this book and contrary to the previous review, I found the information to be helpful and accurate. As a young woman with little financial knowledge, this book was a perfect gift from mother to daughter. The book was both easy to read and understand, and covered a wide range of topics. I especially enjoyed reading sections: Singles in your 20s, Assessing your current resources, and Making the markets history and trends work for you. Overall, this book is a great introduction to investment and saving strategies for women of all ages.

I looked through this book at a local bookstore and
decided to chime in here ...
this book has some blatant errors
that go beyond the range of typos and misspelling
to the area of downright incorrect statements.
I thought I was misunderstanding some of the material
until I read a book review

Interesting, but a bit disappointing as a text book........2006-09-09

This is a difficult one. I did find the book interesting, and I did learn from it. I still gave it a "3," however, because I'm not sure it lives up to the likely expectations of its apparent intended audience.

A. G. Brown's book, Alluvial Geoarchaeology: Floodplain Archaeology and Environmental Change, is certainly an interesting book. I have studied geology, paleontology and zooarchaeology, so the book was a natural for me. Also because it is written by a British author, although there are North American examples of the effects of fluvial processes on landscape and cultural and physical remains, most of them are taken from European sites in the British Isles and Europe. Since, in my experience, so few of these latter occur in US texts, I found them interesting and enlightening.

That said I have to say that Professor Brown does not go into enough detail regarding the sedimentary processes that produce the structural environment that an archaeologist is likely to encounter. In short, he fails to get down to the nitty-gritty of what such an individual is likely to actually see when he looks at sedimentary structures on site. One might legitimately counter, however, that much of this information only comes through a hands-on field experience guided by an experienced sedimentary geologist, but I still think that more might have been done by way of photos.

Unfortunately, many of the photos in the text come across very poorly. Most are in black and white, which is probably the best way for details to be visualized, but the quality of the black and white photography (or of their reproduction) is very grainy which defeats the purpose of black and white photos to begin with. I found this very frustrating in my attempt to see what the author was trying to describe in the body of the text or in the passages accompanying the photos. Furthermore, most of the photos were distance shots that showed almost too much, rather than honing in on specific details like grain size, unconformities, evidence of post depositional rounding, etc. that are the meat of the subject.

If the book is intended as a text for archaeologists, I can't help but feel it fails to provide them with really useful field information beyond that that an archaeological handbook might have offered and perhaps better. Especially recently, most such books place an great emphasis on the taphonomy of bone and cultural material and the pitfalls that interpretation of physical remains can provide if post depositional history is not taken into consideration.

Part of the problem with this book, and probably with the field in general, is that archaeology and geology are still such distinct specialties, that though efforts at consiliance have been made, the two disciplines still have not learned how to talk to one another effectively. Neither addresses the specifics of what the other needs to know to say something coherent about a site and its meaning. This is unfortunate, since archaeology, unless it's done as a surface survey or a ground probing project, is very destructive of sites and data. With limited funds and with many sites requiring interpretation before they are buried beneath yet another housing project, shopping mall or freeway, every scrap of information needs to be collected and correctly interpreted or be lost forever.

Interesting to a casual reader with an interest in sedimentary processes and archeology, but not necessarily useful for training of future or current professionals in the field.

Best intro to the topic, but could use some revision...........2005-03-25

"Active Tectonics And Alluvial Rivers" comes with a trio of authors that certainly sounds authoritative and reliable, although Dumont was unknown to me thus far (my bad!), but the names of Schumm and Holbrook definitely were enough for me...
The main value of this quick and agile treatise lies in being possibly the first one specifically dealing with the relationship between tectonics and all manners of fluvial affairs. Treatments in recent textbooks by Miall and Bridge also cover the topic of course, but in this case we meet with unprecedented focus...

In these days of explosion in research in all of the Earth sciences, it is not surprising that even an essay on such a specialized subject has to be structured in an intricate series of chapters and subsections ranging widely over many different subdisciplines and topics. The list of contents shows coverage of essentially all of the main aspects of fluvial geomorphology, hydrology and sedimentology in relation to factors of active tectonic control, positively highlighting throughout the importance of both forward and inverse approaches to the analysis of a wide range of field and laboratory (flume) case studies, including relevant work by the authors themselves...

The main letdown for me, however, came exactly from the general content of the book! I suppose no one would be daring to delve into the complexities of interactions between fluvial processes and tectonic controls without being fairly well grounded in the basics of the subject... Yet, I was left with a feeling that the authors all too easily glossed over an introduction to some main theoretical aspects of relevance to all the discussions that would follow. The structure of the whole book essentially consists in a long series of (even too) detailed descriptions and discussions of case studies, an approach that inevitably brings about some discontinuity. This doesn't really help the reader in forming a logical thread of synthesis on his mind, busy as he must be in making sense of all the different examples. Chapter summaries won't help either, as they often appear to be too cursory and simplistic, and in a couple of instances even report observations on issues that are not so relevant to what has been discussed, such as in chapter five on "Earthquake effects"! The final result is therefore that the reader is left with quite some homework to do in order to come out with general insights and principles from a somewhat spotty and fragmented maze of case studies...
On the other hand, it is to be considered, as well, that the subject has never undergone extensive review in the past, and that its inherent difficulties (let's face it, anything river-related is a tricky mess!! By far the most complex geomorphic systems...) imply an open road ahead for research, still to be fully explored. So, although lacking in explicit overview, the book was not and could not have been intended to provide easy or ready-made answers! Let's say that a second, more careful read can clear up the mind and aid in pinpointing a few principles of general relevance...
Of possible help however could be a paper published by two of the authors, which though much less detailed, contains the most interesting hints and observations you could gather from the book in a much more concise version! (Holbrook & Schumm, 1999, "Geomorphic and sedimentary response of rivers to tectonic deformation: a brief review and critique of a tool for recognizing subtle epeirogenic deformation in modern and ancient settings"", Tectonophysics 305: 287-306)

In spite of my rather substantial criticism, I guess it's fair to say that as an introduction to the subject this little treatise should not be missed by anyone interested! A second edition could come up with updates from a steadily growing body of literature, and above all with more introductory and summarizing background all throughout, in order to better lead the reader toward understanding and, why not, inspiration for further research...

First comprehensive book on the topic.......2000-04-15

This is the first book, in my opinion, to really focus on the effects of active tectonics in the fluvial system regime. Many books focus on tectonic geomorphology or fluvial geomorphology, but none has integrated both subject areas for a thorough discussion on the integration of the two.

I really appreciated that the authors concentrated on case studies rather than jargon. The two background chapters are sufficient to start the advanced reader on the extremely interesting case studies. I also appreciated the division of the case studies into forward and inverse modeling approaches.

The applicatons section was full of studies of modern approaches in engineering, stratigraphy, and neotectonic interpretation.

Alluvial fans are important sedimentary environments. They trap sediment delivered from mountain source areas, and exert an important control on the delivery of sediment to downstream environments, to axial drainages and to sedimentary basins. They preserve a sensitive record of environmental change within the mountain source areas. Alluvial fan geomorphology and sedimentology reflect not only drainage basin size and geology, but change in response to tectonic, climatic and base-level controls. One of the challenges facing alluvial fan research is to resolve how these gross controls are reflected in alluvial fan dynamics and to apply the results of studies of modern fan processes and Quaternary fans to the understanding of sedimentary sequences in the rock record. This volume includes papers based on up-to-date research, and focuses on three themes: alluvial fan processes, dynamics of Quaternary alluvial fans and fan sedimentary sequences. Linking the papers is an emphasis on the controls of fan geomorphology, sedimentology and dynamics. This provides a basis for integration between geomorphological and sedimentological approaches, and an understanding how fluvial systems respond to tectonic, climatic and base-level changes.

Investigations were undertaken to study the adsorption-desorption, persistence and leaching of thifluzamide (2',6'-dibromo-2-methyl-4'-trifluoromethoxy-4-trifluoro methyl-1,3-thiazole-5-carboxanilide) in an alluvial soil under laboratory conditions. The adsorption-desorption studies were carried out using batch equilibration technique. The results revealed high but weak adsorption of thifluzamide in alluvial soil with K"F value of 9.62 and 'n' value of 0.63. About 47-62% of the adsorbed amount got desorbed in four desorption cycles, which further substantiate the hypothesis of weak binding. The hysteresis coefficient varied from 0.19 to 0.40. Persistence studies carried out at three concentration levels (0.1, 1.0 and 10.0 @mgg^-^1) and under three moisture conditions (air-dry, field capacity moisture and submerged) revealed that thifluzamide is a persistent chemical and only 19.5-54.0% dissipation was recorded on 90th day. However, it appears that aerobic microbes are more efficient in degrading thifluzamide than anaerobic microbes. The preliminary leaching studies carried out in the laboratory revealed that thifluzamide was moderately mobile in alluvial soil. Only small amounts ( <1%) were recovered from leachate fractions whereas major portion remained in 0-15 cm soil depth.

I read Stan and ohhh my god; he is sooo ballsy, sooo bad, sooo funny and sooo real. Stan gets into our heads and hearts and gets sympathy from the reader for being expressive. Stan does things we all want to do sometimes but know better not to...Despite an office job and a pretty girlfriend, Stan feels discontent and is looking in all the wrong places.

If you are a woman, wishing to know the hows and whys of men; if you are a man searching for yourself or wanting a little camaraderie; if you are a soul in human form trying to remember why you are here, A Man Called Stan is a must read. I just can't remember ever bursting into laughter so often while reading a book! And part of what makes it so funny is understanding how the character can find himself in such situations. Because he is human, like us, with the same problems and looking for answers.
This story is a fun-filled ride that takes us to someplace meaningful as well. Gives you food for thought, which happens too seldom these days with a book. I recommend it to anyone who is interested in life and how people live it.

Well, this is certainly something different! One of the most original books I have read yet. Made me smile and kept me turning the pages. Was a bit disappointed when it finished.
I really recommend it to anyone who wants something fresh and thoughtful to read.

I know that I am likely the only person who will ever get one of these from amazon, but there should be more. Killraven is cool. I mean really, a giant guy fighting Wellsian martians, whats not great about that.
