Book Description
Financial Accounting: A Business Process Approach attempts to bridge the gap between business and accounting. It starts out by setting the stage with a description of what a business is all about. This provides a framework in which readers can see how accounting relates to and reports on business activities. This book shows how accounting fits into business as a company is created, operated, and expanded. The traditional financial statements and the accounting equation are emphasized, but how accounting relates to business processes is at the core. This version of Reimers introduces debits and credits in Chapter 4 and then contains integrated treatment of debits and credits in all subsequent chapters. It covers merchandising and inventory; integrates statement of cash flows, business risks, and internal controls; emphasizes financial statements; and integrates Excel into every chapter. For financial statement users and preparers.

Book Description
"Value nets are digital powerhouses that fuel business results."-From the Foreword by Adrian Slywotzky
If you have ever ordered a computer over the Internet and been amazed that a product built to your exact specifications could arrive at your door within days, or if your business's competition is suddenly gaining share by delivering custom-designed merchandise faster and more reliably than you can, you need to read Value Nets. Enlightened managers around the world are learning that the supply chain can be a bountiful source of profitable growth, increased market share, and shareholder value. Value Nets: Breaking the Supply Chain to Unlock Hidden Profits shows you how to release the value hidden in supply chain operations through new digital networked solutions.
Value Nets introduces you to a new form of business design built around superb supply chain performance in the e-commerce world. This design enables any company to do far more with the supply chain than simply control costs. It provides a basis for true differentiation in the marketplace and gives you the power to deliver first-rate service and customized products to customers in ways that delight them and keep them coming back for more.
Using numerous powerful case studies and examples from companies that have adopted value net design-Gateway, Cisco Systems, Cemex, Biogen, Zara, and dozens more-the authors demonstrate how value nets bridge the gap between the executive culture of strategy and business reinvention and the operational world of procurement, manufacturing, and logistics. They introduce the new concept of value nets and offer compelling evidence of their outstanding results. They also explain the five elements of value net creation, supplying specific examples from companies that have built value nets and showing how the new design helped these companies achieve superior profitability and customer satisfaction.
Complete with an appendix that helps you think through the applicability of value nets to your company, Value Nets delivers everything you need to understand and implement this remarkable new business design. It captures the creativity of today's most effective business model and puts its power where it will do the most good-right in the palm of your hand.
As one of the world's premier corporate strategy firms, MERCER MANAGEMENT CONSULTING helps leading enterprises achieve sustained shareholder value growth through the development and implementation of customer-focused business designs. Mercer's thought leadership on the topic of value growth is evident in four agenda-setting books published in the past four years: Profit Patterns, The Profit Zone, Value Migration, and Grow to Be Great. The firm serves clients from twenty offices in the Americas, Europe, and Asia."Value Nets exposes the supply chain for what it really is--a strategic differentiator. Reading about the success of Apple Computer, Zara, et al., will convince you that the time to take action is now!"-H. Lee Scott, President and CEO, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.
"Our experience is proof that the ideas presented in Value Nets work. Agile, networked operations help us deliver superb service to our customers and drive shareholder value as well."-James Mullen, President and COO, Biogen, Inc.
"Value Nets takes supply chain management to the next frontier. CEOs will find it extremely helpful in their quest to provide better service and reduce cost by meeting unique customer requirements."-William "Gus" Pagonis, Retired Lt. Gen., U.S. Army Executive Vice President of Logistics, Sears, Roebuck and Company
"Value Nets brings new concepts and a road map for competitive advantage to businesses in Latin America and other global markets where traditional supply chain thinking controls business design."-Julio A. Barea, President and CEO, Sara Lee Branded Apparel, Latin America Group
Customer Reviews:
Innovative.......2006-01-26
Enormous profits are hidden away in the supply chain, say the authors. You can find new value in the operating end of your business- how you handle orders, source components, build your products and get them to customers. The key to unlocking this potential profit is an entirely new business design, the value net.
The value net is a system driven by customer choice, not the company. Today's customers demand exceptional convenience, speed, reliability and customization. These objectives are difficult to achieve with traditional supply chain management. The value net combines recent advances in supply chain management and strategic thinking to deliver more flexibility, speed and customization. The value net approach begins with the goal of creating value for customers. It is demand-driven. This is a contrast to traditional supply chain management which is driven by manufacturing needs, or supply-driven.
This new business model is based on five key elements.
1. Value proposition: Determine what the company will offer to potentially profitable customers, in terms of convenience, speed, customization, etc.
2. Scope: Determine which activities need to be performed to meet these goals, and who will perform them. Consider outsourcing activities to others to add value and efficiency.
3. Profit capture: Determine how the company aims to earn a compelling return on shareholder investment. Break down returns from benefits offered to customers like superior service, creative solutions, and costs and assets.
4. Strategic control: Maneuver to protect the profit stream over time through sustainable competitive advantages. Control your brand reputation and your relationships with supply partners. Use innovative design to pass on low-cost products and services to customers.
5. Execution: Use human capabilities and digital technology to hold all the elements together. Cultivate a team oriented culture fully supported with digital technology.
Capturing value using a value net.......2002-02-25
Value Nets is an intriguing look at businesses that have revolutionized the way the do business by revolutionizing their supply chain. What is a Value Net? According to the author a value net "is a business design that uses digital supply chain concepts to achieve both superior customer satisfaction and company profitability". One of the main concepts of a value net is that it operates in parallel manner rather then a rigid sequential chain.
Value Nets have the following five main characteristics:
Customer-alignment
Collaborative and systemic
Agile and scalable
Fast flow
Digital
Value Nets builds on the work of The Profit Zone, which define five elements of a value-creating business design. These five elements are defined as follows:
Value proposition - a company's value proposition consists of products and services that add value to customers.
Scope - what activities are required to deliver the company's value proposition and who delivers them (internal or partner).
Profit capture - mechanisms that capture profit from the value proposition
Strategic control - elements that protect profits over time
Execution - operational excellence
Value Nets take the five characteristics of the value net and show case studies of how companies implemented value nets within the context of the five elements of business design listed above.
The models that this book lays out are quite useful for considering how a product or service is delivered. The case studies and example in this book are quite useful and cover several industries. Most of the examples relate to product companies, but the concepts can be applied to services companies as well.
This book is a interesting and useful read for business consider how to interact with partners, competitors, suppliers and customers in the digital age. I would recommend reading the Appendix Value Net Self-Diagnostic first because is a great intro to the book. If this book resonates well with you might also like How Digital Is Your Business and The Profit Zone (also from Mercer Consulting).
Gives A Framework of Digital Supply Chain.......2001-03-31
Merits: A systematic framework to understand how digital supply chain can apply to businesses. Good comparison with traditional supply chain (systematic vs. sequential). A few cases are detailed and insightful. For a fan of Mercer's Business Designs, it will be delightful to see how the authors fit the two together.
This book will be more readable if contents are cut by half. Many contents are repetitive. "The Profit Zone" is full of new ideas, "Value Nets" is filled with consultants' empty statements. Some cases only talk about what happened, but not why it happened and how.
I gave "The Profit Zone" five stars, "Value Nets" deserves only three.
Give This One A Pass.......2001-02-13
If you're interested in supply chain management issues or e-business, you won't find much here. It's mostly a rehash of the other Mercer Consulting Book, The Profit Zone. Very general in nature, there's not much new material here. Read The Profit Zone and leave this one in the bin.
read only if you have much time..........2001-01-18
This book is not primarily about eBusiness, but about the application of general management knowledge (such as customer focus etc.) in an internet - enabled world. As such it does not present new concepts for eBusiness. It merely summarizes old and well known cases and makes them fit to the own model of 5 "elements of business design". The book might be nice for beginners to see what is possible nowaday's but of little help if you want to learn really new concepts. Last point: the content could well be condensed to fit on 100 pages, 4 repetitions of everything are really of little use.

Customer Reviews:
Perfect guide for beginner beekeeper.......2005-07-10
This provides details on how to start and maintiain a healthy colony. Includes buying, managing, choosing equipment, controlling pests, and all aspects of making honey. A good easy-to-understand guide for the beginner.
The New Incomplete Guide to Beekeeping.......2001-02-07
I have about 17 books on beekeeping related topics and I found this one to be the most lack luster of them all. Like the other reviewer said it touches briefly on all aspects of beekeeping but does not go into any real depth. I found its section on How To Get Started On Beekeeping pathetic. On installing a package of bees it offers six black and white photographs and a few lines of text underneath each picture to describe what is going on. That?s it!!. It does not mention anything about what to feed them once they are installed, your first inspection and what to look for, or a description of the equipment you will need to start your first hive. I think most beginners are very concerned about starting the process correctly and more attention should have been placed on the first few weeks of establishing a hive. Dr. Morse did not even go into the topic of establishing a colony with a nuc. Dr. Morse is a very well known and respected professor at Cornell University who I might call one of the founding fathers of modern beekeeping. Unfortunately, he wrote a crappy book that offers little to the new beekeeper. Two books I would recommend are John Vivian's "Keeping Bees". Although it is slightly dated when it comes to managing mites the rest of the book is invaluable as a source of information. Richard Bonney's two books on beekeeping are also very good.
incomplete guide to beekeeping.......1999-12-16
this is a good book for someone interested in beekeeping, but offers little to someone who is actually getting started in beekeeping. It contains an introduction to nearly every important topic in beekeeping, but is not in depth enough to help anyone who has bees and has questions about them.

Product Description
This up-to-date electronic book on CD-ROM has comprehensive coverage of USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) research, publications and reports on every aspect of bees and honeybees, beekeeping, apiaries, Africanized honey bees (known as "killer" bees), and colony collapse disorder. It includes extensive material on CCD and known diseases such as foulbrood; chalkbrood; nosema disease; parasitic mites, tracheal mite, varroa destructor, and more. There is material from the Carl Hayden Bee Research Center in Tucson, Arizona, the Honey Bee Breeding, Genetics, and Physiology Laboratory in Louisiana, and the Bee Research Laboratory in Beltsville, Maryland. There is material on the role of bees in the pollination of agricultural crops and the production of honey and beeswax, morphometrics, scanning electron microscope atlas, natural history of the queen, workers, and drone, and genome research. This extraordinary, encyclopedic collection contains more than 19,000 pages reproduced in Adobe Acrobat PDF files. Colony Collapse Disorder threatens not only pollination and honey production but, much more, this crisis threatens to wipe out production of crops dependent on bees for pollination. Pollination is responsible for $15 billion in added crop value, particularly for specialty crops such as almonds and other nuts, berries, fruits, and vegetables. If research cannot solve CCD, beekeepers will be unable to meet demand for almonds and other crops. CCD symptoms include the rapid loss of a bee colony's population with very few bees found near colonies, the laying queen present with few remaining attendant bees, and honey and pollen not consumed by invaders.

Book Description
This book, designed to encourage active and collaborative learning in the physical chemistry classroom, is a collection of group activities (ChemActivities) that can accompany any physical chemistry text. Intended to accompany one semester of the full-year physical chemistry course, it incorporates new methods for teaching chemistry, reflecting current research on how students learn.
These ChemActivities take a guided inquiry approach to the material, which teaches students how to think like scientists, rather than simply memorizing important conclusions arrived at by great scientists of the past. Students develop a strong conceptual understanding and appreciation of the material by carefully observing new situations, constructing logical conclusions based on these observations, and discussing the merits of their conclusion with peers.
There are two books in this series: Physical Chemistry: A Guided Inquiry: Atoms, Molecules, and Spectroscopy and Physical Chemistry: A Guided Inquiry: Thermodynamics. Publishing the ChemActivities in two separate volumes allows them to reflect the typical division of content in a full-year physical chemistry course, where one semester is devoted to traditional thermodynamics and another semester to modern quantum mechanics. Separating the two volumes allows instructors to select the volume appropriate for their course.
- The web site includes a section on kinetics that matches the format of the ChemActivities. Putting this material online as well as in the Thermodynamics book allows instructors to teach the material in either semester of the physical chemistry course.
- Clearly labeled scientific "Models" appear throughout each ChemActivity in bulleted and illustrated formats. These explanations of scientific theories help students develop their conceptual understanding of the material.
- "Focus Questions" appear before each "Model" and serve as a primer for students, preparing them for the material in the ChemActivity.
- "Critical-Thinking Questions" appear after each "Model" and ask students to explore ideas in a number of ways. Students might be required to explain a concept, draw a molecule, complete a table, or write an explanation about a topic to another student. This multi-faceted approach addresses different learning styles, helps solidify a student's comprehension, and reveal areas of weak understanding.
- "Information" sections include background material, illustrated with figures, on the "Models" presented.
- "Exercises" follow "Models" and test students' problem-solving ability.

Book Description
The use of the laboratory is a valuable tool in developing a deeper understanding of key chemical concepts from the experimental process. This lab manual encourages scientific thinking, enabling readers to conduct investigations in chemistry. It shows how to think about the processes they are investigating rather than simply performing a laboratory experiment to the specifications set by the manual. Each experiment begins with a problem scenario and ends with questions requiring feedback on the problem.

Book Description
This book, designed to encourage active and collaborative learning in the organic chemistry classroom, is a collection of group activities (ChemActivities) that can accompany any organic chemistry text. Intended to accompany the full-year organic chemistry course, it incorporates new methods for teaching chemistry, reflecting current research on how students learn.
- Clearly labeled scientific "Models" appear throughout each ChemActivity in bulleted and illustrated formats. These explanations of scientific theories help students develop their conceptual understanding of the material.
- "Critical-Thinking Questions" appear after each "Model" and ask students to explore ideas in a number of ways. Students might be required to explain a concept, draw a molecule, complete a table, or write an explanation about a topic to another student. This multi-faceted approach addresses different learning styles, helps solidify a student's comprehension, and reveals areas of weak understanding.
- "Exercises" follow each set of "Critical-Thinking Questions" to test students' ability to solve problems based on the models presented in the ChemActivity.
- The following institutions and schools have successfully class tested this book: Bruce Heyen, Tabor College; Christine Gaudinski, Arapahoe Community College; Laura Parmentier, Beloit College; Karen Glover, Clarke College; James Stevenson, Concordia University; Tina Mewhinney, Dallas County Community College; Scott Morgan, Dana College; Jerry Handschuh, Kilgore Community College; Dave Bugay, Kilgore Community College; Glenn Keldson, Purdue North Central University; Steve Brantz, San Jose State University; Bob Ludt, Virginia Military Institute; Frank Creegan, Washington College.

Book Description
Designed to be used with Spencer, Rickard, and Bodner's Chemistry: A Guided Inquiry is filled with activities that get students actively engaged in the material. These activites train students to examine data, written descriptions, and figures to develop important chemical concepts for themselves.
Each activity is followed by a series of Critical Thinking Questions, which lead students through the thought process that results in the construction of a particular concept or idea. Finally, students work on Skill Development Exercises and Problems that reinforce key ideas developed in class and enable them to practice applying those ideas to new situations.

Book Description
This comprehensive volume surveys the general aspects of atomic cluster science and outlines some of its important new challenges. It begins by detailing the recent advances in the understanding of structure and the essential properties of selected atomic cluster systems, fullerenes and confined atoms. Recent advances in the field of photo processes involving atomic clusters and fullerenes are discussed, and an entire chapter is devoted to the problem of fission dynamics of atomic clusters, presenting parallels with similar processes in nuclear physics. The book goes on to describe the problems of electron-cluster collisions with special emphasis on polarization and collective excitation effects. The important area of the behavior of atomic clusters in laser fields is considered; the ionization, collective dynamics of electrons in the system in the presence of the laser field, and the laser induced dynamics of molecules and clusters are thoroughly described.
Finally, a broad spectrum of problems in the area of ionic collisions with fullerenes and metal clusters is covered from both experimental and theoretical points of view and the results of the most recent measurements are reported. The concluding chapter takes a careful look at the interaction of an atomic cluster with a surface. The problems of cluster deposition and formation at a surface as well as collision processes involving clusters deposited at a surface are considered through a number of illustrative examples.

Book Description
A whimsical and funny novel about a fellow who has amnesia and endures a series of bizarre adventures as he searches for his life. His only clue is a telephone number, but when he calls it he gets a distorted message that sounds like this: "The number you have reached, the land of debris and the home of alfredo is not in service at this time..." This book has been especially popular with high school and college students, as well as older readers who appreciate a freewheeling sense of humor, a dash of the absurd and a sense of magic propelling us through our lives. Amdahl's style has been compared to Richard Brautigan and Tom Robbins. One young reader described this book as "a Catcher In the Rye for the new millenium." Another said it was "Candide with a bad case of the giggles."
Customer Reviews:
I found it digging deep into me .......2006-03-23
A man walks through the deserted prairie of Oklahoma. He knows he is missing something, but he can't quite figure out what it is. Suddenly, in a moment of breakthrough, he realizes he has no memories left. Who is he? Why is he in the middle of nowhere? He finds a gas station and tries to call the one number that he remembers and gets an answering machine to "The Land of Debris and Home of Alfredo". Progressing through the most ludicrous of situations, the man finds himself in such places as New Mexico, Mexico City, Oregon, Las Vegas, Lousiana, and Kansas. The man is the accomplice to drug trades, casino scams, police cover-ups, and voodoo ceremonies by total default.
I found the book to be enthralling, but not super coherent. It was just plausible enough to keep a story and yet it somehow kept me reading it. It was laced with drug references and innuendo, but it still keeps its main objective in sight: to find out the identity of the protagonist. Its storytelling was superb, and I found it digging deep into me and finding the vagabond hidden in my personality. The book built up to a fantastic ending, but it left me with nothing. I really hated the ending, but the incredible body of the book almost totally made up for the overly demure ending.

Existential Romp.......2003-11-08
I belly-laughed my way through this witty 'travelogue' as the protagonist (who can't remember anything about himself, including his name, and has no form of identification on himself) romps his way through America and Mexico, taking on personalities based on the reactions of people that he meets. His fresh-eyed descriptions of even the simplest things -- such as taking a shower or watching a lizard dart out of its cactus home -- add to the charm of this narrative.
