Do Not Recommend.......2002-03-13
This book is not for the easy minded. It's definitions and explanation are often difficult to follow and needlessly technical. I skimmed most of it rather than reading it end to end. In fact I'm buying another book on financial statement analysis.
I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone.
Written by a professor, for other professors.......2001-05-04
This book was a huge disappointment. It is overly technical, dense, and difficult to read. The author uses technical language to such an extent that his information is circular. Technical language to explain technical concepts leaves the reader who is not already an accountant in the dark. Here is an example. "Assets are probably future economic benefits obtained or controlled by a particular entity as a result of past transactions or events. Future economic benefits refers to the capacity of an asset to benefit the enterprise by being exchanged for something else of value to the enterprise, by being used to produce something of value to the enterprise, or by being used to settle its liabilities." (p. 24) If you think this kind of explanation is helpful, you might like this book. I have been in business for 25 years, and to me it is turgid and impossible.
Not really designed for the investor.......1999-10-16
The title of this book is mis-leading and the author missed a golden opportunity to write a book that truly is a self-study guide to interpreting and analyzing financial statements. This book appears to be written by an accountant for accountants - it goes into excessive detail without ever addressing the needs that an investor has. I was looking for a relatively simple, straightforward book that addresses stock selection on the basis of information gleaned from financial statements. This book claims on its back cover to "show stock market investors how to profit from the knowledge of professionals,... " It doesn't do that. It goes into endless, minute detail about statements but never relates it to stock selection. I feel ripped-off.

Managing Price Risk in Ag Commodity Markets starts with a look at some of the major forces that are changing the marketplace. Then it demonstrates what price risk is and deals with why it is important to you, to the agribusiness firms from whom you buy inputs mean, and to the processors to whom you sell your commodities. Two broad considerations are kept to the how and why of the changing world marketplace. They are responsible for the increased price volatility and risk to American farmers. The first consideration is the 1996 Farm Bill, which changed farm policy in a dramatic way. The second goes back several years and deals with two very important trade agreements: the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the General Agreement of Tariffs and Trade (GATT). These two important trade accords expose the American farmer to any and all of the forces that can bring uncertainty to commodity supplies and price variability around the world. This book is surely an amalgam of facts and gossip. It has no references and no index. It shows already spelling faults in the names. So, it is not recommendable as a prime source of information for serious scholars.
Nevertheless, its overall picture exposes one clear message: the blatant hypocrisy of the powerful, be they popes, emperors, tsars, kings, queens, princes, Khedives, Shahs, politicians or noblemen. Their maxim is 'Do as I say, not as I do.'
Those who became rich (merchants, movie stars, artists) emulated them (T. Veblen).
It proves mightily that 'power equals women'.
On the other hand, some 'famous' names figuring in thus book are clearly 'victims' of this double standard hypocrisy: child prostitutes, courtesans, members of the demi-monde or findings of the casting couch.
As L. Betzig said in her magisterial book 'Despotism and Differential Reproduction': 'All end of human life is its reproduction, and positions of strenght are exploited to this end.'
This 'shocking' book is a powerful exposé.

I bought this book because Chaplin is mentioned in it. The book does reveal some juicy details about people like Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, & Ava Gardener, but on others they hardly mention their "sex lives." Its more of a book about who dated who rather than who slept with who.
