Practical and readable advice on ESOPs.......2006-01-11

Larry Cook has done a wonderful job in writing a book on ESOPs that is practical, readable and understandable. He accomplishes this feat even though the formation, valuation and maintenance of ESOPs can be a difficult endeavor given the complexities and nuances surrounding this area. Although titled "Financial Valuation of Employee Stock Ownership Plan Shares," it includes good insight into the decisions that go into whether to form an ESOP and whether an ESOP is feasible for a given company. For example, chapter 2 includes a very interesting story of a CFO that went through the process with two companies. He also presents his thoughts on the controversial areas of the actual valuation of a company for ESOP purposes as well as the DOL, tax and financial reporting requirements. The two appendices include the DOL proposed regs and the IRS training class materials regarding examination of ESOPs. In summary, Mr. Cook's book is an important read for business owners, Plan Trustees, CPAs, Appraisers and Financial Advisers and should be a part of any business library.

This text is a good overview of ESOPs, when one makes sense for a business owner, how an ESOP can help motivate a company's employees, legal issues, and share valuation (required by law). It is a readable and practical text that should be of value to business advisors, business owners, and valuation specialists. ESOPs are highly regulated by the government and must follow the requirements both at formation and on a continuing basis. There is a cost to setting up and maintaining an ESOP but there can be significant benefits for the business owner. Some are financial and other benefits are non-financial such as business succession.

Even though the book's title suggests it is primarily about valuation, it has a lot of coverage on practical aspects of whether it makes sense for a business to establish an ESOP and the regulatory environment. This should be of interest to business advisors and business owners.

For the valuation specialist, the book covers factors in valuing the company's shares that are unique to ESOPs - primarily due to government regulation. Those factors include: the impact of ESOP leverage, minority/control attributes of the shares, repurchase obligations, adequate consideration, and tax issues.

An excellent way to bring chemistry into the everyday.......2005-02-21

Have you always been somewhat fascinated by chemistry? In college was a chemistry minor, and thought it was very exciting. It explans the many whys and hows behind basic everyday chemistry. Is this book super technical, no. Does it have enough science in it to make it credible, definately.
Some of the topics that are included are:

Why are Opals and Pearls Iridescent?
Why are Ice Cubes Cloudy on the Inside?
What Makes a No-Tears Champoo?
How do Sutures Dissolve?
Why do Lightsticks glow?
Are Flamingos Naturally Pink?

There are almost 100 of these types of questions. This book might make a great reference for a teacher, or a student in a science fair. The book covers some basic chemistry, and does a great job in building up some excitement around a subject that some may think is dull.
I really enjoyed the book because it is broken up into sections: gases, solutions, solids, thermodynamics, and then into the questions that apply to those subjects. The book is a fairly easy read, and thankfully isn't too techincal for those of us who may not be so fresh on some of our chemical understanding.

A good resource for high-school or liberal arts course.......2005-01-04

There are a lot of books out there explaining the chemistry of everyday things. For sheer readability, I recommend Prof. Joe Schwarcz's series of books, which are readily available on Amazon. The shortcoming of Dr. Joe's books, and most books for the general public, is that they aren't really meant to be a resource for teachers of chemistry. They only include the most basic of explanations that the layman can understand.

Thus, the need for a book like "Chemistry Connections." It contains the same "basic-level" explanation for a layperson, but also has a second explanation for each subject giving details on a more scientifically rigorous scale. Then there's a section of references (often reputable websites, vetted by the authors) for people that want to get even more in depth.

The way the explanations are written, and the choice of topics, makes this a resource best suited to the high-school chemistry classroom, or to a "liberal arts" (chemistry for non-chemists) university course. The explanations tend to be a little thin for a true freshman-level calculus-based chemistry course. That's not to say that a thoughtful professor can't make great use of this book for any level course - the choices of chemical questions are varied and thoughtful, making it a great reference when planning lessons.

The book is not perfect. It does not have the zing or flow of many other books for sheer readability - it's best used as a resource to give ideas for presentations and lesson examples for high school or liberal arts courses. There are some typos - there is a pentavalent organic carbon (horror of horrors!) in one diagram, for example. Finally, some of the detailed explanations tend to wander off-topic, for example, explaining how polymers are synthesised in a section on polymer structure. While interesting, it was not relevant to the particular question at hand, and likely to be confusing for the student.

An absorbing intermediate to advanced level chemical text.......2003-06-17

Now in an updated second edition, Chemistry Connections: The Chemical Basis Of Everyday Phenomena is an amazing volume with chapters based around answers to questions such as "What causes an egg to crack if it's boiled too rapidly?"; "Why do carbonated drinks go flat as they warm?"; "Why do lightsticks glow?"; "How does a timed-release medicine work?"; and much, much more. The collaborative effort of Kerry K. Karukstis (Professor of Chemistry, Harvey Mudd College) and Gerald R. Van Hecke (Professor of Chemistry, Harvey Mudd College), Chemistry Connections is an absorbing intermediate to advanced level chemical text that makes learning chemistry a lot of fun in some unique but quite effective ways.

there are better alternatives.......2003-05-27

Overall this book and is fairly successful in its aim of explaining a selection of everyday chemical phenomena in terms accssible to most people. There are a couple of points which really let it down though.
First, the presentation of the material and the diagrams could be greatly improved. For example, there is a "3-D" structure of EDTA given. In fact, it just seems to be a 2-D Chemdraw diagram pasted in to Chem3D! It gives no sense of how the dispostion of the oxygen and nitrogen atoms allow EDTA to surround the metal centre thus making it an effective metal sequestering agent.
Second, certain sections go in to extraordinary detail concerning the physical chemistry of certain phenomena. Rather complicated equations and diagrams are presented which don't aid the reader in really understanding conceptualising the processe which are described.
Third, annoyingly, temperatures are presented only in Fahrenheit. Hello!? Did the authors not consider that they may have readers outside of the US.....

Great teacher resource.......2000-04-29

I found Chemistry Connections very interesting and informative. I am a high school science teacher and I already have a strong background in chemistry. The format presents infomation on each question at multiple levels of sophistication, from introductory information accessible without much knowledge of chemistry to in-depth information on specific molecular structures and interactions. This book would be a great resource for chemistry teachers. My only critisism is that the writing style could be a bit more engaging.

It is just complexity that accounts for apparent absurdities.......2004-05-05

This book includes complete mathematics to describe the achievements of Professor Croca. I have to admit that, being no phisic reader, I skipped most of it. Yet the important ideas presented in this text are perfectly understandable without diving into quantitative details.
The main aim of this book is to find an intuitively consistent description of quantum mechanics experimental results, and with this possibly get rid of all the weird and couterintuitive theories presented so far. We have for example a very fancy multiverse theory by Hugh Everett, to explain the interferometric phenomena of a single photon passing through two slits.
Professor Croca explains that there is absolutely no need to invent such weird theories and proposes something that involves only some more complexity in calculations. The dualism wave-particle is based on absolute separation of wave and particle properties. This is due to the extreme nature of the "non-local" Fourier analysis. By applying to quantum mechanics the modern wavelet theory in place of the classic Fourier transform, Croca tells that it is possible to include in an unified description both wave properties and the singularity called particle where most of the energy is concentrated. This elegant and simple explanation avoids all the strange confusion of the modern quantum mechanics and proposes a reasonable complete picture.
A major point in Croca's thought is his avversion towards unjustified negative results, firstly the uncertainty principle if asserted in a strong form.
Personally, I agree totally with Professor Croca, and I hope that his ideas will bring some more clarity in modern phisics. In my opinion, there is some relation between his support of wavelets and the fuzzy logic of Lotfi Zadeh. Using wavelets in place of a rigid and absolute nonlocal Fourier analysis helps with apparent experimental paradoxes. Fuzzy logic as opposed to rigid and absolute Aristotle's logic helps with logic paradoxes.

Well, it's true, Solomon did have it easier! After all, apart from that thing with the two women and the baby, what demanding cases did he try? Anyway, the Old Testament sage was a king, so had a good deal of latitude. The modern judge is more circumscribed and must try to extract justice from a morass of laws created by others. Perhaps no-one did this better than that demon of denouement, the Yorkshire Judge, Embert Wimple, as the cases presented in these stories surely demonstrate. All were culled from those tried by the judge during his last year on the bench—or, more truthfully, from the author’s fertile imagination! In any case, the wry sense of humour of both judge and narrator are conveyed in a readable style that makes the stories eminently entertaining and amusing.
