So-so intro chemistry text.......2003-12-09

This book is designed as an introductory text for a yearlong chemistry course targeted to allied health students. It is organized in three parts: general chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry. It also has a secondary goal to present chemistry from the view point those aspiring to careers in health care and does so via a number of pedagogical features that highlight the role of chemistry in health and make the text a bit more relevant: Chapters begin with a workplace scenario that illustrates the practical use of chemistry; numerous drawings depict how various subjects apply to health and the human body; profiles of health care professionals that use chemistry in their day-to-day work are interspersed throughout; inset essays that describe the role of chemistry in maintaining health, applications of chemistry in everyday life, and in-depth forays into selected topics.

In light of the aforementioned features of this book, I was initially rather optimistic. However, as my course progressed and I needed more in-depth explanations of chemistry concepts, I found time and again that I needed a secondary source for full understanding. This really shouldn't be a knock against the book as it is not designed for the kind of depth and completeness that I am used to in a textbook, but I found it frustrating nonetheless. I would rate organic section as the best followed by the general chemistry with the biochemistry coming in last. I would suggest to those that haven't had chemistry before to get a supplementary text to help you gain a more complete understanding. I had an especially difficult time with the biochemistry section and felt precious little effort was made to explaining some of the biochemical pathways that were presented. All too often, complex pathways like glycolysis and citric acid cycle were just presented as a series of reactions and I never got a feel for the big picture but was often lost and confused amongst all the intermediate steps. A better job should have been done to present this material especially considering the audience.

Overall, it's not a terrible book and a good deal of chemistry can be gleaned from its pages, but some additional effort will be needed to make the most of it. Don't bother with the biochemistry section unless you have a good supplementary text or tutor at hand, otherwise the going will be tough. The redeeming qualities of this book are it's additional features that highlight the role of chemistry in physiology and health and make chemistry seem relevant.

wow, a textbook i actually like. what a miracle.......2001-10-21

I read this and understand it, which is a miracle for textbooks ESPECIALLY CHEM! ;-) It's geared mainly for people entering allied health professions, which I am not (music/botany nerd here, folks), but it's still interesting to know why all the stuff in our bodies happens. I actually had fun reading the Lipid chapter and thanks to it I was able to pose for a portrait without getting bored. :-)

Description:
A geo-referenced environmental fate model was developed for analyzing unsteady-state dispersion and distribution of chemicals in multimedia environmental systems. Chemical transport processes were formulated in seven environmental compartments of air, canopy, surface soil, root-zone soil, vadose-zone soil, surface water, and sediment. The model assumed that the compartments were completely mixed and chemical equilibrium was established instantaneously between the sub-compartments within each compartment. A fugacity approach was utilized to formulate the mechanisms of diffusion, advection, physical interfacial transport, and transformation reactions. The governing equations of chemical mass balances in the environmental compartments were solved simultaneously to reflect the interactions between the compartments. A geographic information system (GIS) database and geospatial analysis were integrated into the chemical transport simulation to provide spatially explicit estimations of model parameters at watershed scale. Temporal variations of the environmental properties and source emissions were also considered in the parameter estimations. The outputs of the model included time-dependent chemical concentrations in each compartment and its sub-compartments, and inter-media mass fluxes between adjacent compartments at daily time steps.

Tools to effectively apply biological information in daily physical planning cases are viewed as essential in order to preserve and manage natural habitats in highly pressured urban areas. This paper describes a GIS-based management tool for conservation and management of biodiversity and the process of implementation in the capital of Oslo, Norway. The main objective of this multi-agency effort is to ensure a sustainable and responsible management of the biodiversity within the municipality. A political decision on the state level encourages all municipalities to survey and classify their biological diversity according to a scale of importance within 2003. Furthermore the results from the survey were encouraged to be implemented in the daily physical planning at a local level. The assignment called for structured, classified and accessible information about the biological resources of the municipality. The electronic tool presented makes it possible to combine biological information with any other information that is relevant for a planning issue. We believe the GIS-based management tool has a strong potential to be transferred to other municipalities in Norway as well as to other countries with organised environmental management systems at both local, regional and national levels.
