According to most authorities, fraud in business and government is at an all-time high. The responsibilities of the auditor and accountant to detect and deter fraud and white-collar crime are increasing, and yet they catch few frauds before devastating losses occur. In the view of Joseph T. Wells, this is because accountants and auditors wrongfully assume fraud can be detected and prevented through traditional audit techniques. Instead, the author suggests that auditors, accountants, and loss prevention professionals must find a new approach. Fraud examination is defined as the skills necessary to resolve allegations of fraud from inception to disposition; to obtain evidence, take statements and write reports; to testify to findings; and to assist in the detection and prevention of fraud. Fraud examination consists of specialized knowledge from four fields: accounting and auditing, investigation, law, and criminology. The book begins with a section on criminology, which explains the various theories of why some persons commit crimes and others do not. A special emphasis is given to the theories of the white-collar offender. The next section, law, gives the reader a broad knowledge of the courts, how they operate, and the various procedures for proving fraud matters. It also details the various criminal and civil statutes by which fraud offenders are punished. The third section, auditing, provides the reader with specific techniques to examine books and records for fraudulent activity. Net worth analysis, a methodology for proving ill-gotten gains, is explored in detail. The final section, investigation, provides techniques on how best to obtain information through interview methods. It also covers confidential sources of information, as well as writing reports in fraud-related cases. This book is specifically designed for the person who not only wants to know about fraud, but what to do with it in the event it is suspected.

This books provides an excellent detailed road map for taking Lean concepts to the supply chain. Many of the publications I've read summarize the success companies have had in implementing Lean concepts. This book goes well beyond that, outlining HOW to take Lean to the supply chain. The book includes a 5 phase process with step-by-step instructions for each phase.

The real "jewel" in the book is the authors discussion of companies in a "crisis environment" versus companies in a "normal environment". Lean initiatives are often initiated as a result of a company finding itself in a "crisis". These initiatives fail because Lean practictioners are unable to recognize the need, or are unable to deliver, the quick results needed in a time of crisis.

This book is a "must have" for anyone wanting to take Lean concepts to their supply chain.

While global investment in agricultural research by the private sector is increasing with growth in developing country markets and the emergence of new technologies, complementary public sector investment is stagnating or declining in many developing countries. This review argues that the changing roles of the public and private sectors in generating new scientific knowledge may adversely affect the diffusion of explicitly pro-poor technologies-technologies that are simultaneously yield-enhancing and poverty-reducing. Comparing historical evidence from the Green Revolution with recent evidence from the emerging era of agricultural biotechnology, this review argues that a more pluralistic international system for agricultural research will be more responsive to poverty only if the strategic leadership role of the public sector is strengthened, certain research functions are reallocated to the private sector, and new policy and organizational mechanisms are used to stimulate pro-poor research in and for developing-country agriculture.

Great for any intermediate organic chemistry class........2005-02-05

Although the book goes into significant detail about mechanisms of reactions, they are sometimes left incomplete, leaving the reader feeling cheated out of information. However if you're just trying to do well in the class, the detail of the book is enough to give a good understanding of organic principles and chemical reactions and is a good tool for an intermediate organic chemistry course. There are worked problems after almost every new concept as well as information about reagents and other laboratory tools. The summaries of new organic reactions at the end of each chapter are a particularly useful study tool. In addition, the CD provides a look at 3D molecular models, often an indespensible part of understanding organic chemistry.

In recent years kinetic theory has developed in many areas of the physical sciences and engineering, and has extended the borders of its traditional fields of application. New applications in traffic flow engineering, granular media modeling, and polymer and phase transition physics have resulted in new numerical algorithms which depart from traditional stochastic Monte--Carlo methods.

This monograph is a self-contained presentation of such recently developed aspects of kinetic theory, as well as a comprehensive account of the fundamentals of the theory. Emphasizing modeling techniques and numerical methods, the book provides a unified treatment of kinetic equations not found in more focused theoretical or applied works.

The book is divided into two parts. Part I is devoted to the most fundamental kinetic model: the Boltzmann equation of rarefied gas dynamics. Additionally, widely used numerical methods for the discretization of the Boltzmann equation are reviewed: the Monte--Carlo method, spectral methods, and finite-difference methods. Part II considers specific applications: plasma kinetic modeling using the Landau--Fokker--Planck equations, traffic flow modeling, granular media modeling, quantum kinetic modeling, and coagulation-fragmentation problems.

Modeling and Computational Methods of Kinetic Equations will be accessible to readers working in different communities where kinetic theory is important: graduate students, researchers and practitioners in mathematical physics, applied mathematics, and various branches of engineering. I don't know how this author could justify the price for a book of just 58 pages with lots of blank space. If I had picked it up in a bookshop I would have put it strsight back on the shelf. It could be read in one sitting, so to speak. It's only mildly funny in places and contains anecdotes that I've read elsewhere.
