Description:
This paper analyzes the influence of ownership structure on firm value. We find a non-significant relationship between the ownership of large blockholders and firm value. We also find a positive effect of the degree of control with regard to firm value. Endogenous treatment of these variables then reveals a positive effect for the ownership by major shareholders on firm value, although the opposite relationship is not significant; and a positive effect of the degree of control on Tobin's Q and vice versa. A positive effect is seen when the major shareholders are individuals.

Description:
This study examines whether ownership and control variables influence market valuation at the time of the initial public offering (IPO). Using a sample of 118 IPOs on Euronext Amsterdam during the period 1984-2001, we find support for this conjecture. Management stock ownership, the proportion of independent supervisory directors, and board monitoring by large nonmanagement hareholders are positively related to IPO firm value. These factors are successful in reducing agency costs. We also find that supermajority management stock ownership and takeover defenses lower IPO firm value. Therefore, these mechanisms increase agency costs, resulting in a lower price that investors are willing to pay for IPO shares.

Description:
U.S. mutual fund companies offer funds in Canada through two channels: foreign direct investment or trade in advisement services. The total value of U.S.-controlled funds amounts to 18% of the Canadian equity fund market. This paper investigates how the fund-level and firm-level characteristics affect the channel used to enter the Canadian market. Empirical results indicate that the funds offered through FDI are not especially successful in the U.S. market but are associated with dominant companies, whereas the funds offered through trade in advisement services are highly successful in the U.S. market and are from companies with relatively few successful funds.

Customer Reviews:
One of the finest books on the history of science.......2006-11-21
This is one of the finest books on the history of science I have ever read. Each scientist appears larger than life - even their warts and flaws are the size of mountains. This is the history of chemistry told on the large screen, technicolor, and surround sound, as heroic as any military or political history. I'll be re-reading this book 20 years from now.
Not received.......2006-03-22
I have not received yet the books in question. I would like to know what happened.
Truly yours,
Guillermo Pineda
still a great introduction to chemistry.......2005-10-09
Not everyone likes to jump into a field with a basic textbook. Crucibles tells the story of modern chemistry and atomic theory in the form of a series of biographical vignettes with an emphasis on chemistry. It starts with the ancients and covers a lot of ground. I found it rather fascinating as a kid, but I still think it's pretty good as an introduction.
Good information - difficult style.......2003-07-14
I have read and reread this book several times and use it in teaching honors and AP Chemistry on the high school level, and have required my students to read it to bolster their knowledge of the history of chemistry. It is an excellent book, but the writing style is somewhat difficult for high school students, even the higher performing ones. Because of this, I have added some more recent books written in a more engaging style for my students to choose from. I would still recommend this book to those interested in the history of chemistry, but I would also recommend others as well, including PROMETHEANS IN THE LAB by McGrayne and UNCLE TUNGSTEN by Sacks.

Customer Reviews:
Fascinating, readable, paradigm-changing.......2007-07-19
Tributsch gives the reader a book that is based on both historical accounts and conventional/theoretical earth science. For me, having lived through upwards of several hundred minor and major quakes in my misspent youth, it provided tantalizing hints about the origin of earthquake precursors I repeatedly observed. Enlivened by personal accounts, by historical reports, and by the author's own thoughts on quake behavior, this is a rich and compelling read.
Thanks to Tributsch's groundbreaking work -- THE book that made it "okay" for scientists to publically express their own quake precursor observations -- studies continue to reveal the multifaceted nature of precursor events.
Excellent book for the literate lay reader, and a good paradigm-shaker for conventional earth scientists.
Helmut Tributsch---ahead of his time.......2007-07-15
Folks,
This book you must read and must possess whether you believe or disbelieve that animals can predict earthquakes. I have already worn out two copies of my own since it was first published in 1982. I am so pleased that it has been reprinted, although I do not know if it contains new information. I do know that as a geologic reviewer, I found no errors in the previous printings.
Tributsch was originally denied publication in the U.S. and Great Britain, with the mainstream critics claiming it was a collection of anectdotes. After publication in his native German it was deemed so valuable that it was translated by M.I.T. Press and published in English.
Tributsch is a true scientist and he does not claim to have all of the answers; however, in my 60 years of studying earthquakes, I have never found a more valuable study in unconventional efforts to anticipate some of the greatest examples of "unpredictable" natural phenomena.
Geologist Jim Berkland, MS, CEG 58, Fellow Geol. Soc. America
Thorough, earnest, but uncritical and based on a bad theory.......2006-07-26
Dr. Tributsch presents a dense compilation of a huge number of anecdotes of animal misbehavior before earthquakes. He then presents a discussion, nearly as comprehensive, of the ways cracking rock might produce physical changes in the ground and air to incite the animals.
The layman learns a lot about how animals behave and what bothers them. The stories come from around the world, and from prehistory up to the present.
Dr. Tributsch is clearly compassionate, and frustrated that few other scientists take his work seriously.
Unfortunately, the theory that pervasive cracking precedes most large earthquakes bit the dust in the early 1980s. Worse, many of the dramatic precursory phenomena described in ancient literature have revealed no analogs since scientific instruments have been producing vastly more accurate recording of events around the time of recent earthquakes, casting doubt on the veracity of such legends.
So this book is not promising for learning new earthquake science (also, it is now 24 years out of date), and it is too serious for a light read. Although his theories have not yet exhausted their most ardent adherents, this book is difficult to recommend to anyone outside of the history of science on the wrong track.

Book Description
This book introduces physics students and teachers to the historical development of the kinetic theory of gases, by providing a collection of the most important contributions by Clausius, Maxwell and Boltzmann, with introductory surveys explaining their significance. In addition, extracts from the works of Boyle, Newton, Mayer, Joule, Helmholtz, Kelvin and others show the historical context of ideas about gases, energy and irreversibility. In addition to five thematic essays connecting the classical kinetic theory with 20th century topics such as indeterminism and interatomic forces, there is an extensive international bibliography of historical commentaries on kinetic theory, thermodynamics, etc. published in the past four decades.
The book will be useful to historians of science who need primary and secondary sources to be conveniently available for their own research and interpretation, along with the bibliography which makes it easier to learn what other historians have already done on this subject.
