Not much new here..........2002-11-21

I read the first review and thought "whoopee"- I found it!. I was wrong.

If you haven't yet figured out to:
1) pay off your house
2) save more
3)spend less
4)work longer if necessary and
5) don't buy a NEW car, but a used one

then this is for you.

Otherwise I did not find anything I hadn't already seen elsewhere (mostly on the websites for AARP, Social Security, and CalPERS) or figured out on my own.

Simply the best book I've found yet on the subject........1999-08-20

I bought this book for a client who is retiring shortly. I have to say this is the best book I've found yet on this subject. It gives practical advice in a short, readable format. So many books claim to show you how, then give simply crummy, or at best questionable advice. There are no magic bullets. There are no shortcuts. As a financial planner I have read many so called 'self help' (more like self mutilation usually) books on the subject, and received many good laughs as a result. In a bull market anyone can swim, but when the tide goes out, we'll see who's swimming naked. This book gives you the information you'll need to prepare financially for the rest of your life. It does not tell you all of the answers (would you really want to read one tha claims to?) but it does lead you in the right direction toward finding them. I strongly reccomend this book to anyone planning to retire, be it 3 days or 30 years from now. You could spend much more, for much worse advice. Buy it, and get one for a friend.

Caution..This is 8th edition!!!!!.......2002-09-28

I'm using Chemistry :The Central Science 9th edition Textbook. This answer book is 8th edition..The problems are not the same, therefore the solutions do not match up.
Otherwise, if I was using the 8th edition textbook, this book is definitely helpful.

For all those taking chemistry. This is the book to have. It has all the answers for the questions in black. It shows how each problem is solved. A priceless buy for all.

Hey - the answers to these questions aren't in the back of the book, so this is priceless. Sometimes the answers aren't as detailed as you might like, but it's better than downright guessing. Definitely worth buying if you have to do a lot of the black excercises in the book.

Worked for me.......2006-08-02

I found out about this book earlier this year from a friend of mine in Atlanta. I had gained a lot of weight over the holidays and I was really feeling uncomfortable. Although I wasn't perfect all of the time on the plans, I still have lost over 25 pounds. I really liked the recipes and the strategies. I was suprised at some of the foods that weren't included but after reading the reasons I had a better understanding. I also liked that the book did not stress being really thin. I still have a few more pounds that I want to lose then I'll be ready to maintain.

Not Practical for the real world of food.......2005-09-07

In the real world of food there all types fats, grains, veggies, fruits, starches and I can go on and on. Many of them help the human body to function properly. On a positive note the diet book does help to loose weight. But it sets us women up for failure you eat 4-8 0z a meat, a cup of fruit, and a cup of veggies twice a day to complete a full meal depending on which plan you are on you may get more. You can have one item on the list for breakfast. These foods come from a small list of only eat foods. My gripe is that it does teach you portion control while eating off the list. It does not teach you for the real world when you end the diet. Also I do not like that whole grains and other healthy foods are not on the plan. Our bodies where designed to eat a broad variety of food and our minds likewise want to naturally do the same. The maintainence section doesn't give you any vital information on keeping the wieght off and maintaining a healthy diet. This diet teaches you nothing of the real world where food exists. I call it a starvation diet and I think if I loose the 20 I want to loose I will look unhealthy or just starved. Besides eating this little every day and working out for 1-2 hours is not going to get it. In the real world people get up and exercise to loose weight a sedentary life will keep you down they also learn to eat a broad variety of food to supply nutrients that the body desperately needs. He should emphasize the importance of exercise in his book if he really wants to look out for Black Women. A quick fix fad diet this is for sure because if you don't get the fundamentals to building a wholesome diet that weight will creep back on with some more to spare.

A new outlook.......2005-08-12

I am 34 years young and I heard about Dr. Beale's book from a friend in Chattanooga, TN, so I decided to buy it. I read the entire book in a day and a half...it was such a good book! The eating plans were simple enough for my personality and the way they were set up was like a reward system for losing weight. By following his plan at each weight interval, I had a blueprint for goal-setting. I was always frustrated with weight loss efforts because I am hypothyroid (low thyroid) and diabetic. My physician treated these issues as well and since beginning the program in Mid-May of 2005, I have to date lost 33 pounds!!!! I started out at 203lbs and am now on August 1, 2005 down to 170lbs. My husband needed to lose some extra pounds and started on the eating plan with me and went to my physician. He's lost 22lbs and he looks INCREDIBLY SEXY!!! After 3 babies (6yrs, 3yrs, 15 months) we are doing what we didn't think was possible and we are looking forward to our mid-30's with excitement! My goal weight is 130lbs to get to the healthiest BMI for my height and weight and I project that I will reach that goal by Feb. of 2006. I've been incorporating walking and some resistance training to help with an abdominal "pooch" that I've developed and all of my thanks is to you, Dr. Beale and daughter Lisa for the information and insight that allowed me to realize that my body is unique and for giving me tools that assist me with proactively reaching my weight loss goals in a healthy manner.

Almost but not quite.......2005-01-22

When I first saw the title of this book and idea behind it, I was very excited and couldn't wait to get it. I read most of the book that same day. It was refreshing to read about things that I may be doing wrong and how they may be the cause as to why I am not losing weight. As the other reviewer mentioned the book has a section called the "Diet Salon" in which comparisons are made with our bodies/genetics and our hair. Talks a lot about how the information given to us by the media really don't apply to us. This was the introduction section of the book and from this section, I felt the book was very promising, but my optimism started to fade as I read on.

In some ways, I question weight loss being a black/white issue. I may be able to follow on the exercising, but in reading the book, I really found nothing substantiating that a white woman couldn't follow this very same diet and get the same result. I mean WHY would this work for me? From reading the book, I can't tell why this is different from any other diet book generically written for ANY woman. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but I guess I was looking for more detail and explanation on why this is specifically a diet for Black women. I'm still not convinced.

Now, getting to the meal plans. I like his ideas on "Eating to Lose" then moving on to "Eating to Maintain". It certainly gives you the feeling of not having to be on a "DIET" your whole life, however, the diet is meager to say the least. There is a HUGE list of Do Not Eat and a very small list of what I can eat. Also, it aggravated me that there were very few recipes in the book and those that were there were not appetizing. However, I realize that their couldn't be much choices with the limited selection which leads me to my next gripe: Why couldn't he give more direction on things to put together for breakfast? Somewhere in the book he said something to the effect that it would be a challenge on our parts to make up a breakfast. ???? I would have liked to have some suggestions on this. C'mon, he has been helping black women lose weight for 30 years, he should have tons of ideas and recipes. The entire beginning of the book is telling us how the mainstream diets are not right for us and that we should follow his suggestions, however he really doesn't given any direction on how to get started with the meal plans. I finished the book thinking that everyday for breakfast I have to eat a fruit salad.

Also, I felt that the diet assumes that most black women don't work out. While this may be true, I felt a little insulted. I may be heavier than I would like, but I work out regularly and I enjoy it. He says to work out a MAXIMUM of 15 minutes 3 times per week and even says that this is not necessary. Tell me what in the world will that do???? That barely does anything for your cardiovascular system let alone for weight loss. He claims that the heavier workouts are not right for us, but gives 1 paragraph of information as to why it is not good for us. I would have liked more. While the doctor may have done much to help thousands of black women, I am not so sure that he will be helpful to this black woman. I am sure that he is very good at what he does, but maybe it wasn't conveyed very well in a book.

I went to his site, and while the site does not indicate it, I found elsewhere that the dear Dr. was killed in a car accident the end of last year. I wanted to call and ask some questions, and while his staff is still available, I guess I will have to figure it out for myself. I may try the diet, but with the poor selection and lack of direction, I really think it would be a tough one to follow. I certainly appreciate when black Dr.'s and Nutritionist use their expertise to the benefit of their own race, but I must say that I feel this one missed the mark.

A diet for us..........2004-09-07

As women, a lot of us are always worried about our weight and losing a pound or two here and there. In a lot of cases, we try fad diets, pills, and even go to our doctors for advice and counseling on how to lose weight. However, THE BLACK DIET DOCTOR'S SOLUTION FOR BLACK WOMEN informs us that not every physician is capable of truly treating black women when it comes to weight loss. They give an example of weight being like hair and that though we're all born with a certain type, that type is what determines which beauty salon we go into. It makes perfect sense right?

Well, actually it does and authors Robert S. Beale, Jr and Lisa M. Beale do an exemplary job of breaking down the causes of obesity in black women and what can be done to avoid it, fix it, and get back on the track of living healthy lives. Through their program of "eating to lose" and then "eating to maintain" they have created various programs based upon your current weight to help you lose weight. They also teach how to set milestones, incorporate your lifestyle in the program, and add recipes and exercises to assist with the weight loss.

The style of writing was my favorite part of the book. I didn't spend major time in dietary mumbo-jumbo trying to figure out what X or Y meant. Everything was written in a manner in which I could easily relate and understand and make it one that I would recommend to others. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to taking the next step -- actually following one of the programs for myself to truly test out their theory.

Ever drive down Sunset and see the hawkers with maps to the rich and famous in the hills? The maps help tourist drive by the gates and supposedly learn who lies beyond and within. Well, the attached has a map of sorts, dedicated and inspired by Ludwig Wittgenstein. It shows how to take roads to see what lurks beyond the gates of ourselves and how we think. Some think it a bit more worthwhile.

A wonderful trip into the world of misinformation. Fake news has never been funnier. An easy read. Who is this guy?

Do you ever feel the urge to read philosophy but ignore it since past attempts lead to rather nebulus or silly encounters? Are classical philosophers really brilliant or hopelessly confused? Does thinking about thinking have to be so hard? I write these questions since I read the above book and have turned the corner.
Henry takes Ludwig Wittgenstein probably the greatest philosopher of the last 100 years and explodes his thoughts into bite size morsels. It is a fun journey with Henry and you come out the other side with a better handle on how to think about the world around you and how you as a thinking entity fit in.
I strongly recommend this book to all of you who like the Jon Stewarts, Jerry Seinfelds and Andy Kaufmans of the world; and understand how humor like that can reveal the power of context on the meaning of our lives. The book is a deceptively easy read.
