Closed-End Investment Companies (CEICs) were the dominant form of investment companies in the United States during the early part of this century, but interest in them declined after the 1929 stock market crash. Since 1985, however, there has been a significant revival of interest in CEICs.
A substantial amount of academic research has focused on the nature of closed-end funds, discounts and premiums, and on the share price behavior of these firms, which often results in the prices differing from the net asset value of the shares.
This book is designed for the academic researcher interested in CEICs and the practitioner interested in using CEICs as an investment vehicle. The authors summarize the evolution of CEICs, present the factors that cause CEIC shares to trade at different levels from their net asset values, provide a complete survey of the academic literature on this topic, and summarize the current state of research on CEICs.

One of the best of the 1960s autobiographies.......2001-01-21

It's a shame that this book is out of print, because it tells the story of one man's adventures in a unique time and place in a way that is less successfully done in other such books. Mungo was there at the creation, and he (usually) doesn't gloss over the failings of the hippies' original vision. The book is witty and opinionated, well-written and amusing - and if you're interested in the 1960s you should seek out copies in your nearby library or other such repository.

Mungo's life during those intense years covered in the book (which is circa 1965 through about 1971) traced nearly the entire stereotpical path of the 1960s hippie: from the Haight to political action in Washington and elsewhere (as a member of the Liberation News Service), to a comically unsuccessful stand as a back-to-the-lander communitarian, to a wandering journey to the 'sources of enlightenment' in Asia. The book shows just how it was possible to become entirely burnt out with innovation in just a six or seven year period, and illustrates well the trajectory of the 1960s, from ideal to disillusion to acceptance.

Interesting But Technical.......2007-09-07

I have to agree with the previous reviewer. Creation of the Teton Landscape by David Love is a wonderful book in terms of illustrations and describing the massive earth forces that have produced the Grand Teton Range and Jackson Hole. There is a good description and illustrations of the plate movements and erosion that have created one of the best mountain vistas in the United States.

The book goes on and becomes very thorough in its description of geology and plate techtonics in shaping the earth. Probably too technical for the average reader interested in just learning more about how the Tetons were formed. If you're interested in geology, however, this is a pretty good tome.

This book does exactly what it says it will do. The authors are three senior geologists with extensive experience studying Jackson Hole and the Teton Range. The authors intend this book for a general audience, and it is full of many beautiful pictures of the geology of the area. It also includes many helpful diagrams, and will enrich your visit to the area.

The authors do a very good job explaining the most obvious features: the Teton fault, glaciation, moraines, and the like. However, this is of limited usefulness since these features are explained in many other sources, from National Park Service handouts to other guides. Beyond those simple features, they also provide a good explanation of a few other geologic features - the - Absaroka volcanic field, Potholes and other channelways, to name a few.

Unfortunately, they gradually lose sight of their target audience in much of the middle parts, providing too much geologic description for the general reader. For example, the later chapters might describe certain rock layers in the region and then stop. At that point, the reader needs the author to say what the implications of these layers are for what the layman sees.

In short, the second half of the book would doubtless be useful for an undergraduate field trip to the region but it isn't helpful for the lay tourist. It needs a lot more story telling, and I can only hope that the second paperback edition provides that.

Presenting some of the most recent results of Russian research into shock compression, as well as historical overviews of the Russian research programs into shock compression, this volume will provide Western researchers with many novel ideas and points of view. The chapters in this volume are written by leading Russian specialists various fields of high-pressure physics and form accounts of the main researches on the behavior of matter under shock-wave interaction. The experimental portions contain results of studies of shock compression of metals to high and ultra-high pressure, shock initiation of polymorphic transformations, strength, fracture and fragmentation under shock compression, and detonation of condensed explosives. There are also chapters on theoretical investigations of shock-wave compression and plasma states in regimes of high-pressure and high- temperature. The topics of the book are of interest to scientists and engineers concerned with questions of material behavior under impulsive loading and to the equation of state of matter. Application is to questions of high-speed impact, inner composition of planets, verification of model representations of material behavior under extreme 1oading conditions, syntheses of new materials, development of new technologies for material processing, etc. Russian research differs from much of the Western work in that it has traditionally been wider-ranging and more directed to extremes of response than to precise characterization of specific materials and effects. Western scientists could expect to benefit from the perspective gained from close knowledge of the Russian work.

Excellent read! I couldn't put the book down. Ms Williams has put together a unique, funny, and interesting story of love, lost and found. I absolutely loved the character development. I can't wait for her next novel!
