Deep but clear and practical book.......2001-01-14

A better title could have been "Reliable accounting for risk, its financial reporting and internal control". It is written against a background of major banking blunders due to their failure to properly account for, report and control risk. This makes the comparision of different accounting standards between countries easier to understand with a discussion of the historical context. (usually the comparison of standards is dead boring - in this book it is not). One of the good things about this book is that it goes beyond the current accounting standards and internal control methods to suggest ways to improve them. It has a very practical approach to issues relating to accounting for risk. Its discussions are deep without being too complex.

A terrific for book for those wanting to bridge the gap between reading "The Goal" and putting it into everyday practice. The authors explain the fundamentals of Theory of Constraints and drum-buffer-rope scheduling, and present seductive logic for a new simplified drum-buffer-rope called S-DBR.

Through the use of diagrams called clouds, most people will immediately recognise a host of the day-to-day production problems that they face and the solutions for their removal. There is an important discussion of V, A, and T plant configurations that will help managers to better understand their own plants. The financial, tactical, and strategic implications of TOC are also investigated. Integral to the text is CD-ROM simulation that allows you to run various plants for a significant period of time in order to experience the undesirable effects and their solutions first-hand.

People who are serious about rapidly improving the bottom line performance of their organisations should read this book.

The authors have shown us how the the Theory of Constraints can improve your business quickly and effectively. They clearly explain how it operates within existing legacy systems or can be used as the basis for a much improved brand new solution. If you are looking for the definitive reference source that answers those questions you have about TOC in a supply chain solution, then look no longer. "Manufacturing at Warp Speed" is a must read for those investigating leading edge solutions and for the seasoned TOC experts.

Missed the point.......2001-03-31

Sorry guys.....but this is a very POORLY written book. It has a tendency to bounce all over the place and leaves the reader wondering what point are they trying to make? It also discusses neanderthal technology. Haven't these guys heard of the "Three Step Method", or "Control Point Theory". I think if I were wanting information about how to "Manufacture at Warp Speed" I would think they should at least know how to get to warp speed. This books doesn't have the answers.......it missed the point.

I gave this to my future son-in-law so he wouldn't feel so left out, but more importantly, so his mother would realize it's my daughter's wedding not hers. Worked both ways. I haven't read it, but so far, so good.

Helpful, funny, a great read for any guy.......2006-05-21

My bride gave me this even though I didn't think I'd help out too much. But I had a few questions and this really helped. It was funny, which helped, since any book that takes things too seriously wouldn't work for me. I had questions about the budget, since I was paying for somethings and trying to figure out who would pay for the rest, and I also had questions about invitations, who to invite, etc. This worked for me. I will pass it on to friends when they get married.

Pracitcal AND funny, a good mix.......2006-03-06

This book has a lot of good practical advice, like when to get a marriage license. For someone getting married out of state, this was very helpful. I also thought some of the money-saving tips were unique and not your standard fare. There was a part on dealing with problem guests that has been very helpful since we've had to deal with a lot of these types of people and as the groom I usually have to smoothe over a few egos and play peacemaker. To top it off, there's a great section about bachelor parties goes beyond other books and talks about how people really feel about strip clubs, both men and women.

To keep it interesting Gordon puts in a lot of funny stuff, like lists of songs that are inappropriate to play at a wedding and an answer to the question of whether or not throwing rice at a wedding is harmul to birds. (It's not, but his explanation is really amusing and well written.)

I got this as a gift and thought it was really helpful, one source for all of my questions. Four months to go before my wedding and there's still a lot I learned.

Funny, informative, and personal.......2006-02-18

Doug Gordon's witty writing style guides the otherwise clueless groom through the preparatory steps leading up to the wedding. The book is a fun, educating read, and is best accompanied by perusing the author's blog; by the end, you'll feel like you actually lived the experience with him.

I'm not a guy, nor am I engaged, and I really enjoyed this book. Gordon is funny and gives great advice. I'd recommend this to anyone.

This is an amazing book for any one who is not a young bride. She has done an excellent job explaining wedding requirements, others expectations and all with a great deal of humor. The author provides great ideas for the "mid-life" bride and also permission to do the wedding your way. I have never enjoyed a book more...forget Martha and the bridal magazines if you are over 35 you need this book.

Not Quite a Wedding Guide.......2005-09-20

I really enjoyed this book, but it was definitely more of a pleasure read than anything instructional. I was looking for some advice directed specifically toward second marriages, and eventhough I did pick up some good ideas, this book was geared more toward the older first time bride. The author stresses the premise that an older bride should do whatever makes her happy (wear a white dress, have a zillion attendants, register for gifts) without regard for what others may think. Don't each of us in the over 40 crowd do that anyway?

As a first time mid-life bride marrying a man who's been there, done that, 3 times prior in fact, I've met with my share of shock, disbelief and advice. None of it worthwhile until a close friend, herself a mid-life first time wife, recommended this jewel of a book. Shelley Christainsen tells it like it is, as opposed to the typical starry eyed bride guides who tell it like Cinderella imagined it to be. This book is a must read for every mid-life bride (and wanna be) and will be the first gift I give newly engaged friends from now on.

This book is a treasure in the midst of the piles of repetitive ... about getting married. If you don't fit into the average profile of Girl Getting Married, this book will have something for you. I think the way they're marketing this book is a bit off -- it's not only age that makes you different. I'm getting married for the first time now at 33, and I found SO much to identify with in this book. Besides, it's hilarious, and was such fun to read in between issues of Martha Stewart. I'm recommending it to all my friends.

As the prospective husband-to-be, it is wonderful to hear excerpts that my intended reads to me when she comes across something that really hits home (which happens constantly). We fit the profile presented in the book to a tee and I find myself identifying closely with many, many things in the book. Preperations for Long Island style wedding celebrations can be lenghtly and exhausting, and the day can wind up being quite expensive. They are generally geared to those that we have amost 20 years on, and some of the pagentry borders on the uncomfortable. Instead, the book is written from the perspective of us "40-somethings". I have actually had the feeling of relief descend upon me after hearing the common sense ideas and flexible approach that is typical of the book. So, I say "Way to Go" Shelly Christiansen, and "Thank you" too !
