This new book offers a fresh approach to teaching the law of sales of goods. Through precisely crafted problems, the book guides students through their own close textual analysis of Article 2 of the Uniform Commercial Code and then invites them to test their understanding by applying the Code to complex fact situations. Students learn how the Code works by actively parsing the language themselves and exploring the interpretational difficulties presented, rather than relying more passively on cases or explanatory text, which are included here only when necessary to furnish rules or interpretations not derivable by students' own close reading and analysis.

With a primary focus on Article 2, the book also incorporates relevant material from Articles 1 and 7, and from related statutes such as the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, Uniform Electronic Transactions Act (UETA), and the federal Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce Act (E-Sign). It concludes with an assignment on the economic loss doctrine and the relationship between Article 2 claims and tort liability. The text teaches the doctrinal content of the law of sales of goods, while concurrently building students' skills in reading statutes critically and constructing legal solutions to complex problems. The format keeps students actively engaged in analyzing statutory provisions and formulating answers. They will emerge from the process with a deep understanding of the Code, and with the skill to read any statute---including any amendments to Article 2---more effectively.

The book is accompanied by a Teachers' Manual containing the authors' solutions for each of the problems in the text. If the Article 2 revision process results in the adoption of amendments to Article 2, a supplement will be available with additional problems based on the new provisions.

A Novel Approach that Falls Flat.......2005-12-06

The authors of this book take a very novel approach to law school textbooks. But it falls flat.

Each issue is covered briefly, followed by extensive questioning (usually building on the previous question) complete with blank spaces for you to answer, and, unfortunately, no answers. In fact, the sections of the book are grouped in "assignments," not chapters.

By way of example on how brief I mean when I say briefly- in covering the issue of derivative-title exceptions, the full extent of the explanation on the law is :

"The second exception to the derivative-title rule concerns the "buyers in the ordinary course of business," as set out in subsections (2) and (3) of 2-403."

What follows are 4 pages of questions presumably testing your comphrension and understanding of that. Each question builds on the previous question (making it somewhat like a choose-your-own-adventure of law textbooks).

When I had the extra time to devote to the day's assignment, this was a worthwhile approach that was extremely helpful in parsing through the material and the UCC and coming to a better understanding than a traditional textbook would offer.

But in law school, some nights you just don't have the time to underake what the authors require you to do. If you miss a class, you might as well forget it.

Without study aids, I would have been dead in the water.

Suggestions to the authors: 1) include an answer supplement, or remove all the extra blank spaces and put them in the back of the book; 2) add a little more bulk to the explanations and explanations of the law. Should still be a textbook, and not a workbook.

An estimated half of all drug molecules used in medicine are administered as salts, and the formation and the selection of a suitable salt for a drug candidate is recognized as an essential step in the preclinical phase of modern drug development. Surprisingly, however, the scientific literature on this topic is rather limited and scattered throughout numerous journals and patents. The majority of medicinal chemists in pharmaceutical industry whose primary focus is the design and synthesis of novel compounds as future drug entities are organic chemists for whom salt formation is often a marginal activity restricted to the short-term objective of obtaining crystalline material. Because a comprehensive resource that addresses the preparation, selection, and use of pharmaceutically active salts has not been available, researchers may forego the opportunities for increased efficacy and improved drug delivery provided by selection of an optimal salt. To fill this gap in the pharmaceutical bibliography, we have gathered an international team of seventeen authors from academia and pharmaceutical industry who, in their contributions to this volume, present the necessary theoretical foundations as well as a wealth of detailed practical experience in the choice of pharmaceutically active salts.
An introductory chapter presents a concise review of the various objectives in the pursuit of pharmaceutically active salts, followed by contributions that present the theoretical background of salt formation: dissociation and ionic equilibria, solubility and dissolution (Chapters 1 and 2), evaluation of solid-state properties (Chapter 3), and safety, biopharmaceutical, and pharmaceutical-technological aspects (Chapters 4 and 5). In Chapters 6, 7, and 8, the practice of salt formation in an industrial research-and-development environment is described, including salt-selection strategies, aspects of large-scale industrial salt production, and the significance of salt formation in industrial processing. Regulatory and patent issues are addressed in Chapters 9 and 10, and Chapter 11 provides practical examples of preparation of salts for the practitioners at the lab bench. The book concludes with a comprehensive annotated compilation of the individual salt-forming acids and bases with their relevant properties (Chapter 12), followed by an Appendix containing tables with the acids and bases sorted alphabetically and by pKa, supplemented with other useful facts and data.
The editors have taken care to address every conceivable aspect of the preparation of pharmaceutical salts. Altogether, the contributions reflect the multidisciplinary nature of the science involved in selection of suitable salt forms for new drug products. This is a must have book for the Medicinal/Formulation Chemist. It's a bit pricey (or maybe I am just a frugal Scotsman !) but worth it. It gives an incite into the direction chemist should take when making pharmaceutically acceptable salts and things to look for. Wish some sections were expanded upon, but there we go.

This book is surely a Global prescription for sustainability in mining practices. Practices and innovations from the coal hearts of Oklahoma (emerging mining technologies - hydroevacuation mining technique) to the family-owned operations of small mines in India have been meticulously captured by the authors. The authors, Rajaram, Dutta and Parameswaran, have also provided some insight into the ongoing innovations of the US mining companies and use of new concepts, such as environmental indicators in mining operations. Acknowledgement to the famous Oklahoma Geologist, Bryan Watts (1950-2004) and the active effort by Watts in providing valuable information through the Blasting Chapter of his associate, Paul Worsey adds to the practicality of the book as a valuable reference and field guide on overburden removal by blasting.

The numerous case histories from all over the globe provide great examples to follow.

An entertaining read.......2004-02-20

I'm going to be honest with you. This is not as funny as either of Tim Allen's books, but it is an enjoyable read. After wondering whether or not to buy it for a good while, I finally bit the bullet and bought it. I'm glad I did, as I really enjoyed it, and you will too, especially if you like Richard Karn or his character on Home Improvement, Al Borland.

The book is worth the admission price only if you heed the message: Pay attention and plan. It is funny, and it is nice to know anyone can be afflicted with the 'HomelyImprovement',virus. the good news:No one was murdered at the hands of the homeowners -the Karns;it is only money, and someone elses money at that; It is reality, and could happen to you.

REMODELING IS A LIFE ADVENTURE..........1999-07-09

One engineer told us that our choice of home would end our marriage. Another moved in... I bought Karn's book because it touched a nerve not satisfied by the congratulatory experience of Bob Villa or This Old house. For those of you old enough to remember the allusion, this is Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House for the nineties.

Nice guy without much of a story to tell.......1999-07-06

I've enjoyed watching Richard Karn on "Home Improvement" over the years, but found this book to be a disappointment. There just isn't very much substance to this story about his home remodeling experience. The book has lots of white space, and some obvious things aren't there (like a floor plan or before and after photos) that would have really brought some life to the text. The narrative is somewhat choppy, with brief mentions of some aspects of the project but no real explanation. I've had several smaller-scale remodeling projects done in my home and found most of the "tips" listed pretty obvious. Also, while there were a few interesting bits about the show and Karn's earlier career, at least part of this material read like a collection of one-liners. I could almost hear the rim-shot as I read each punchline. Overall, not worthwhile.

Cute, fun book on home improvements.......1999-05-19

I've been a fan of Rick Karn's since I saw my first episode of "Home Improvement." I always thought he was much more subtle and funnier than Tim Allen. Well, when I heard about his new book, I went out and bought it, and I was just delighted. Karn's sense of humor shines on every page, and this book made it possible for me to laugh at the things that had gone wrong when I did my own home re-model. Reommended for anyone who has done a little work around the house, for anyone who is considering some improvements, and for all dads who like to play Mr. Fix-It.
