Great resource. Book follows the outsourcing process from begining to end with tips, suggestions and recommendations along the way

Practical, good advice for outsourcing.......2006-02-28

This book will lead the reader through a seven-step methodology for identifying, negotiating with, and signing on the outsourcing providers that will best help a company improve its performance and results.

Can a strategic partner help? The author of this book argues that a strategic partner can help if the steps in this book are followed. Some of the steps include:

· Exploring strategic options - a key phrase in which a company links any outsourcing program proposal to its strategy;
· Analyzing costs and performance - this will help a company to evaluate proposals and determine if outsourcing is worth the time, effort, and money;
· Selecting vendors - from setting the qualifications one wants to drafting and sending out requests for proposals to evaluating the responses.

The author stresses that any successful outsourcing initiative begins with careful planning. The first few actions from picking the right team, to pinpointing the outsourcing objectives and targets, are critical to the outsourcing initiative's success.
During the outsourcing initiative, all steps of the initiative, keep employees informed on a continuing basis. The author advises to update employees when:

· The project plans have been completed and share the plans with the employees
· Costs and performance analyses are complete,
· Requests for proposals have been prepared,
· Short-list candidates have been selected,
· A memorandum of understanding has been negotiated,
· And when the contract is signed and the transition begins.

Outdated and High Brow...Not for the Non-Academics or Those New to Outsourcing.......2005-09-08

If you're not either very experienced in outsourcing already or a college level instructor in outsourcing, I would not recommend this book.

Since it was written, a couple more creative and straight shooting books on "how to outsource" are available, particularly in 2005. I advise you to search and find those books independently as I found them much more enlightening, current and relevant to providing directions on outsourcing's nuts and bolts to true strategic and transformational outsourcing elsewhere. Outsourcing has evolved along way since this book was written. It needs updating or should simply be viewed as a reference book after you've read the recent selections by other authors to be on top of your game.

For the Student and the Old Pro.......2003-10-27

I approached this book with some skepticism.
From experience I have seen too many CPA and consultant
types write books purely for the benefit of their career
and pocketbook. These books have often been academic or superficial. This book is full of what, after many years
and many deals, I know to be sound thinking. The book is
also quite thorough. It is not a quick read. It is easy
enough to read but there is a great deal of information contained. For the busy executive it should be acquired
for reference as you need it. Although you should try
to read all of Part One if you can. The beginner or the
student should read often and take notes.

One previous reviewer noted that the book provides
little guidance regarding employee reactions. This
is true. You will need another book in that area.
But what is here is very good.

Mr Greaver has done the business community a genuine service.

Strategic Outsourcing.......2002-06-05

I found the book to be well-written and easy to follow. The references are well-documented. Outsourcing is going to be a strategic weapon for the balance of this decade and into the next. This book delivers on the practical aspects to make such a transition successful. I would recommend this for both parties as a means of preparation.

Outsourcing is only a scary concept when you aren't prepared for it. This book helps everyone to know about the events and sequences which will take place.

Strategic Outsourcing should be mandatory reading for every manager.

Best beginners book in market!!.......2003-11-07

Sperling's book stands out as the most useful polymer science text, compiling essential elements of varied physical properties and behaviour. The third edition has up to date material on all aspects of polymer physics including chapters on polymer surfaces and interfaces as well as on multicomponent polymer systems and liquid crystalline polymers. In my opinion, as a beginners guide, the book is definitely outscores over all other texts in market including Billmeyer, Painter Coleman, Rodriquez, etc. The book also contains a good description of various polymer characterization techniques.

The material covered is adequate to provide basic information about each field in polymer physics, and the textbook has enough material to be useful for two or three courses. The author presents a lot of tables in the book, that succintly summarize important points related to that topic. Coupled with Strobl's book, which has slightly advanced description of polymer physics, and Doi's Introduction to polymer physics, which has mathematically intensive description of statistical mechanics of polymers, you have three texts to teach you essentially everything there is to know in Polymer Physics!! (Perhaps you can add a text for Polymer Rheology, say by Larson!)

High flyers!.......2004-01-09

Shuttle astronaut Jay Apt, together with scientists Michael Helfert and Justin Wilkinson, has put together a wonderful book of photographs under the auspices of National Geographic, Orbit. These are all photographs taken by astronauts from the space shuttle while in orbit (with a few exceptions, historically significant photographs from moon circlings and early trips into space). Photography, interestingly enough, is never really scheduled as a shuttle activity, but rather done 'in between' the other assignments. The photographs included in this book do not come from special 'space' cameras, but rather from regular hand-held, off-the-shelf cameras that astronauts took with them.

The shuttle offers a unique platform for photography, to say the least. It has 11 different windows, and as the shuttle orbits in what one might consider an upside-down position, the windows and cargo-bay with doors open are almost always facing the earth. Astronauts take lots of film with them, and record many phenomena. This book is divided geographically, by earth region: Africa, Europe and the Middle East, Asia, the Pacific, Middle and South America, and North America. There is also a special section on the Aurora, with dazzling photographs of things that look right out of Star Trek!

The images include daytime and nighttime views, calm views and stormy views. One can see hurricanes and cyclones from high above, stretching their entire lengths across great portions of the globe. One can see the difference lighting makes in an urban area at night, the way terrain and human-engineering connect, and how much of the world seems to remain unspoilt when viewed from a distance of even a few hundred miles away.

This is a remarkable book, full of glorious photographs of the 'home world', a great coffee-table book, a great gift, and a great guide of inspiration for younger readers who might be interested in science, geography, or even becoming an astronaut.

Another Great Space Book From National Geographic.......2001-12-08

Astronaut Jay Apt, with the help of geographer Justin Wilkinson and climatologist Michael Helfert, has assembled a book full of pictures of Earth taken from orbit. These photographs were chosen from over a 145,000 that are available from the NASA photographic library and focus on many different aspects of our planet's geology and climate. The large coffee table style format and the high quality of the reproductions allows this book bring out the stunning features of our home and is welcome addition to anyone who is interested in space photography, especially since most of the book is photographs and very little text.

The book is divided into sections covering each continent, the Pacific Ocean and the aurora. To show the range of Earth's geology and climate, each section highlights the major geological features found in each region and if appropriate mankind's influence. To further emphasis to geological diversity of the planet, occasional surface photographs that correspond to an orbital photograph are also included. For example, in the section on Africa, there are photos of the Nile, Nile cities, the Sahara desert, various coastline features and cloud formations. The only portions of the Earth not covered are the North and South Poles, since the shuttle does not fly over these regions. There is also one extremely interesting two page map spread which shows the location of each one of the 268,000 photographs taken by the astronauts.

This book is one of my favorite space photography books and I look at it often and each time that I do I always notice something different. This is a great book and well worth the price.

A must for every household.......2001-09-06

Truely a magnificent piece of work to wiew the wonder of God's creation leaves you in awe of the beauty of the Earth. I pick it up regularly, for maximum enjoyment choose times where you are not rushed so you can drink in the superb pictures. A book no household can afford to be without.

Home Never Looked So Good........2001-08-01

The book is published by National Geographic, so it goes without saying that the quality of the photographs is superb. But to look at this collection of space-born images is to never see the earth in the same way again. All the contintents and oceans are covered and even the Aurora is documented. The astronauts who took these photographs are some of the luckiest men and women on (or off) the earth, and this book will show you why.

Despite all that man has done to harm the environment, many of the photographs give you an eerie sense of what it might've been like to look down on the earth thousands of years ago, seeing only a beautiful collection of shapes, colors and clouds. Some pictures of the African desert and its coastline will leave you breathless.

A wonderful collection that beats satellite imagery any day of the week.

Fabulous.......2000-02-01

I first heard about ORBIT while paging through a National Geographic. The images were disorienting and intriguing. Each photo challenged me to look at the planet like I never had before. "Why is that river so muddy?" "Where do those colors come from?" "How could those shapes be natural?" I would highly recommend getting a magnifying glass to best experience these pictures. They are so rich in detail that constant and close-up attention would be very rewarding. The book is divided into chapters of the continents. To look at the whole book in one sitting is so overwhelming, I would suggest perusing it a chapter at a time.

Within the national German geoscientific research and development programme "GEOTECHNOLOGIEN", funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the German Research Foundation (DFG), the research theme "Observation of the System Earth from Space" was selected as one of 13 key areas in this programme. During the first research phase for this theme from 2002 to 2004 six projects were accomplished covering Earth gravity field and Earth rotation research. These six projects are related to the data exploitation and preparation of analysis techniques for the gravity field satellite missions CHAMP, GRACE and GOCE, to the integration of geodetic observation techniques for a user centre within the International Earth Rotation Service and to improvements in observation and analysis techniques for airborne gravimetry and ring lasers. Over the next decade, a Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) will revolutionize our understanding of the Earth and how it works, producing societal benefits through more coordinated observations, better data management, increased data sharing and timely applications. The political momentum behind the establishment of GEOSS is described and examples of its benefits-drought prediction, disease monitoring, accuracy of weather and energy needs forecasting, disaster mitigation-are provided. While challenges exist, particularly in the area of making data accessible, steps are being taken to meet them, e.g. through the new GEO-Netcast concept. Interagency collaboration within countries is as important as international cooperation; the efforts of the US Group on Earth Observations in this regard are discussed. Maintaining the strong political support here and in all participating countries will be key to the success of GEOSS.

The Group on Earth Observations was established to promote comprehensive, coordinated, and sustained Earth observations. Its mandate is to implement the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) in accord with the GEOSS 10-Year Implementation Plan and Reference Document.
