Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A Good Read!.......2002-09-28

At first glance, Tech-Venture seems like a nostalgic flashback to early 2000. A quick skim through its pages reveals statements like: "Old economy valuation methods, such as discounted cash flows and comparable company multiples, are ineffective for New Economy companies." But don't be fooled, this book is more than just an obsolete relic of the bubble. Once you get past the sections devoted to high-tech start-ups, you'll find a thoughtful examination of technology's role in such critical 21st-century business mainstays as customer relationship management and supply-chain management. For this intelligent analysis, along with equally interesting chapters identifying technologies likely to spawn future revolutions, we from getAbstract recommend this book to managers in business development and technology.

5 out of 5 stars Insights in every chapter.......2001-05-01

TechVenture packs more insightful analysis into every chapter than any other book I've read recently. The chapters on Value and Wireless E-Business alone are worth the price of the book. It's good to see a realistic look toward profitability (at last!) and to have that realism temper a forward-looking work like this is a pleasure indeed. Bravo!

          Book Description

This professional book for labor arbitrators, mediators, administrative law judges, practitioners in the field of labor relations representing either management or labor (or both), and others involved in labor relations and dispute resolution provides insight into the elements of an arbitrator's decision-making process in disputes involving employee discharge. Drawing on his own extensive background in the field, the author uses his own advisory letters of opinion, written to the parties of a dispute, to outline issues involved and the reasoning processes used in making decisions. These letters are from real-life dispute situations and provide sample case studies in a variety of settings and fact situations allowing the reader inside the arbitral resolution process. The work sets forth the factors that an arbitrator will likely consider to be important in his or her determination of when an action by the employer should be sustained (judged fair and right) or overturned (judged to be wrongful). The work takes the process of dispute resolution out of the unpredictable, moving it instead to the methodical search for basic elements that have been considered by the Courts to be fair and supportable. Legal terminology is used within the context of particular cases, but is not so excessive as to create a problem for the average labor relations practitioner.

              Description:
Larvae of moths in the genus Hypsipyla are specialist feeders on trees in the Swietenioideae sub-family of Meliaceae. It has been suggested that there is a pattern of preference for endemic hosts such that the Asian Hypsipyla robusta damages Asian swietenioid host species, but avoids American and African species in the same sub-family. However, this claim has never been tested in well replicated multi-species field trials. In this study we consider five swietenioid tree species: Toona ciliata and Chukrasia tabularis from the Asian/Australian region, Swietenia macrophylla and Cedrela odorata from tropical America and Khaya senegalensis from Africa. These species were included in trials planted in four widely dispersed sites in the Asian/Australian region (Thailand, Laos PDR, the Philippines and Australia). We found that all five tree species were attacked by H. robusta. The ''preference for endemic hosts'' hypothesis was however, supported in two ways. Firstly, T. ciliata, the only species endemic to the regions of all four field sites, was always more frequently attacked than the American and African species. Secondly, we observed that C. tabularis was frequently damaged in trials within the tree's native range (Thailand and Laos) and relatively less damaged when growing outside of its native range (the Philippines and Australia) reflecting geographic variation in the host use pattern of H. robusta.

              Book Description

This textbook gives a concise introduction to modern crystal structure determination, emphasising both its theoretical background and the way it is actually carried out. The theoretical sections are supported by many illustrations, and lay emphasis on a good understanding rather than rigorous mathematics. The most important data collection techniques, and the methods of data reduction, structure solution and refinement are discussed from a practical point of view. Many tips and insights help readers to recognise and avoid possible errors and traps, and to judge the quality of results. The second edition has been considerably updated, especially the chapter on experimental methods, which is now mainly concerned with modern data collection using area-detectors. From the reviews of the first edition: "The book provides a nice balance between describing the mathematical fundamentals and offering practical advice on how to solve a crystal structure… appropriate for an undergraduate audience (particularly in chemistry) and for graduate students or researchers who find they need a better grasp of the subject… a very helpful addition to the collection of introductory texts in X-ray crystallography. Especially for its treatment of common errors in the collection of intensity data and in the interpretation of results." Acta Crystallographica

4 out of 5 stars still uses Schonflies notation?!.......2007-06-24

For any physicist or chemist involved in finding the structure of a given crystal, this book gives a useful read. It treats the subject at a level suitable for a 3rd or 4th year undergrad, who has access to the various crystallographic equipment described in the book. Like a 3 circle goniometer, CCD collection system, and a computer for data reduction. The basic ideas often involve finding the reciprocal space of the latter, via the scattering.

There is not much quantum mechanical theory here. Much of the treatment involves classical scattering off the atoms in the crystal. A more sophisticated text would describe the QM. But it turns out that for finding structures, the book's level of analysis is quite adequate.

What could be a little surprising is that in the descriptions of the crystal classes, that Schonflies notation is also used, along with the standard international notation. In the early 80s, Schonflies notation was being phased out. Surprised to see it still in use.

5 out of 5 stars The Book Doctors Recommend Most.......2005-08-14

This is the ideal book for the beginner and in my opinion a must-read. In the excellent translation by Robert O. Gould, "Crystal Structure Determination" by Werner Massa explains all the basics from symmetry in real and reciprocal space, over generation of X-rays and other practical aspects, all the way to structure solution and refinement. Massa keeps the book simple and understandable and uses mathematical formulae carefully and only when helpful or necessary.
I learned the basics of crystallography from the German original of "the Massa". Now that I am a teacher of crystallography myself, this is the book I recommend to my students.

5 out of 5 stars Useful tool for all dealing with structure determination.......2001-09-12

Single crystal structure determination has become an important and extremely powerful tool not only for inorganic and structural chemists but for all kinds of chemists interested in the structures of their compounds. The major disadvantage of this method was hitherto the lack of useful introductions into it's practical use.
This gap has been filled by Massa's book.
It focuses - unlike other crystallography books - on the practical applications and enables the reader to attack own structural problems by himself. Additionally, this book will provide the necessary theoretical background to understand how X-ray diffraction works, how crystals are built, all this symmetry stuff and so on.
The absolute highlight is, however, the step-by-step explanation of a structure determination, where one can almost see the author sitting in front of his computer and struggling with one of his structures, explaining every step in detail.
Crystallography still needs heavy brain work sometimes. But this book won't cause unnecessary headaches as many other crystallography books do.
Therefore, I recommend this book warmly to my crystallography students.

This book is one of the best introduction in crystal structure analysis that I have ever seen! Due to it's limited size (and price !!) it covers the most important topics of x-ray structure analysis in an easy understandable language without boring the reader with mathematical details. You really get a good impression about what the basic principles and problems of x-crystallography are, and how the can be solved. Everybody wanting to start with x-ray structure analysis should read this book at the very beginning.

                Book Description

This concise book is for chemists, material scientists, and physicists who deal with description of crystalline matter and the determination of its structure, and would like to gain more understanding of the principles involved. The main purpose of the book is to introduce the reader to principles of crystallographic symmetry, to discuss some traditional, as well as modern, experimental techniques, to formulate the phase problem of crystallography, and present in some detail the methods for its indirect and direct solution which are indispensable for further work. The book also contains discussions of structure-factor statistics, of value for resolving space-group ambiguities, and atomic displacement parameters which form an inseparable part of the structure. A discussion of the refinement of structural parameters, conventional, constrained and restrained, concludes the book. Derivations are, as far as possible, self contained and wherever mathematical detail might disrupt the line of reasoning the reader is referred to one of four appendices present in the book. The book is of course valuable for students of crystallography at a graduate and upper undergraduate level. No previous course on crystallography is a prerequisite for graduates in the above fields.

                                  Book Description

Electricity, Relativity and Magnetism: A Unified Text presents the first complete and systematic derivation of the principles of magnetism and electromagnetism from Coulombs law and the theory of special relativity alone. Most books on magnetism introduce the subject in terms of experimental observations, as if magnetism were distinct from, albeit associated with, electricity. The topic of relativity is often mentioned, but almost as an afterthought, rather than as a crucial element of the argument. In this new book from Dr Derek Craik, the important links between electricity and magnetism, via special relativity, are emphasized, leading the reader to a more meaningful and profound understanding of the subject.

Electricity, Relativity and Magnetism: A Unified Text gives a simple and brief review of Einsteins special theory of relativity, emphasizing force transformations. An outline of electrostatics, Coulombs law and its consequences, is also given and is shown to lead to the basis of magnetostatics. Time-dependent electromagnetic effects are introduced naturally via the transformation equations for fields and for potentials, and Maxwells equations are systematically derived. Magnetic dipoles and magnetization are shown to arise on transforming electric dipoles and polarizations. The author next discusses the application of the theory to practical magnetic calculations, and finally goes on to introduce the quantum theory of magnetism. The concept of spin is introduced, leading to spin statics and magnetic ordering, and spin dynamics and resonances. An account of crystal field theory is included. All whose work and research involves the understanding of magnetic phenomena will find Electricity, Relativity and Magnetism: A Unified Text an invaluable resource which will enhance and deepen their understanding of the subject.

4 out of 5 stars Amusing and accurate view of Japan by a Japanese-American.......1998-08-25

Kasumi, a Japanese-American, marries an authentic Japanese, and learns the correct angle at which to slice a cucumber, as well as the many different meanings of 'domo, domo, domo.' How can the Urban Samurai ignore an earthquake? Can a child skate on slabs of bean curd? The witty and open line drawings, a combination of traditional and modern Japanese motifs, are half the fun. This book has surprising reach. Unlike most intercultural satires, 'The Way Of The Urban Samurai' amused and intrigued my Japanese friends even more than it did me.
